Writing special characters

Hello,
I recently got this MacBook Pro and I'm really happy with it, but there's one thing bothering me. I speak some Swedish and because of this, I need to use the characters ä, ö and å. However, writing the å is giving me some problems. According to most sites, I should just press and hold the alt key and then the a, but then I get æ instead of å. I've tried all possible combinations I think, but no way could I write the å. I can use the special character pallet or keep it under cmd + v, but that's not all too handy. So I was wondering if anyone could help me out. I'm new to a Mac, so please explain everything, as I'm used to doing alt + xxx combinations on a pc.
Please note that I have an azerty keyboard.
Thanks in advance and I hope this is not placed in the wrong forum.

In the "Input Menu" tab of "International" system preferences, enable "Keyboard Viewer", and check "Show input menu in menu bar" (bottom of window). That will put a flag in your menu bar that can be used to show the Keyboard Viewer. You can then try Option, Command-Option, and Shift-Option to find the desired characters. (You can use the green dot on the Keyboard Viewer window to make it bigger.)

• Reading and writing Special Characters to Oracle DB

Hi All,
I need to insert data from CSV to Oracle DB and then use the same data for creating XML file in UTF-8 format.
I have few fields in the CSV file which has and special characters. I'm able to read and write in UTF-8 , but the same procedure is resulting in some other ascii character for .
While reading data from CSV file :
Reader l_fileReader = new InputStreamReader(p_in,"ISO-8859-1");
Can anyone help me.
Thanks,

• Writing special characters on a foreign keyboard

Now here is a real brainer for you xp/vista gurus.
I wanna buy a new lenovo in sweden, with this keyboard layout http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:KB_Sweden.svg, but i need to be able to write with this layout:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:KB_Denmark.svg which is danish. Danish, while very close to swedish has a few differences in letters, namely "ä, ö" in swedish is "æ, ø" in danish. So the question is: can I just set the keyboard layout to danish in vista and hey pronto, my problem will be solved?
100 zimbabwean dollars for an answer!
thanks in advance

You can set up Windows Vista for use with different keyboard layouts.
Start > Control Panel > Regional and Language Options
Then click on the "Keyboards and Languages" tab.
Then click on the "Change Keyboards" button.
Then click on the "Add" button.
Select the language of choice. You can use the "Preview" button to verify the correct keyboard layout.
Then click "OK".
You can then change from the different keyboard layouts by pushing "Alt + Shift".
By the way, I'll take the 100 Zimbabwean dollars in cash.

First of all you have to supply a value you want to search for and this has to be the complete path to the value. You're saying you already tried that, but can you paste the code which you used for that? I don't see the path mentioned in the code you posted.
*FindNode*
Syntax
FindNode(Path)
Description
Use the FindNode method to return a reference to an XmlNode.
The path is specified as the list of tag names, to the node that you want to find, each separated by a slash (/).
Parameters
Path
Specify the tag names up to and including the name of the node that you want returned, starting with a slash and each separated by a slash (/). This is known as the XPath query language.>
Another option would be this snippet of code:
&InfoCFDiArray = GetElementsByTagName("ns4:InfoCFDi");
&InfoCFDiNode = &InfoCFDiArray [1];
&attValue = &InfoCFDiNode.GetAttributeValue("noCertificadoSAT")
Warning(&attValue);
It creates an array of XML Nodes which match the name "ns4:InfoCFDi". Since there's only one in the XML it's safe to assume it will be the one and only node in the array. I've assigned that node to the variable &InfoCFDiNode and use that to retrieve the attribute "noCertificadoSAT" value. The warning message should display the value supplied there.
Concering the special characters; you will have to change the encoding of the XML. Peoplecode sets this to UTF-8 by default, but doesn't include this in the header. There's a little hack for that somewhere on the web, I'll see if I can find it.

Hi Sandra,
First of all thaks for your quick answer to my problem.
I see what you mean and get the same result, if I am using data-type string instead of xstring. But the recommendation in the XML-Books of SAP is to use XSTRING to save memory and circumflex problems between Codepages, when writing the XML-Stream to a filesystem.
As you can see in the code abvoe I am using a SAP-FM to display the XML-Stream and this FM works only with XSTRING´s,
that is one reason why I don´t understand that it displays it in the wrong way.
Even the Debugger shows me for the XSTRING the wrong result. Does all that mean that the escaping will not be applyed if you are working with XSTING´s??

• How to extract special characters from a field

Hi there.
I am a novice when it comes to Web Intelligence reports. I have been tasked with producing a final report that I can export to Excel which shows a project number and a project name. Very simple. Ultimately I need to import my final Excel file to a third party software. However, the issue is the project name field consists of special characters such as hyphens, parenthesis, asterisks, etc. I need to be able to create a formula which extracts all special characters and just leaves me with alpha-numeric characters and spaces. I also need to limit the character count to no more than 34 characters. I will not be able to import my final Excel file unless I can product those results. With the help of a very knowledgable person in the Crystal Reports forum, I was able to do that by using the following formula:
stringvar a:=left({Projects.ProjectName},34);
numbervar i;
Local StringVar fin;
for i:= 1 to len(a) do
if a[i]in ["a" to "z"] then
fin := fin & a[i]
else if a[i] in ["1" to "9"] then
fin := fin & a[i]
else if a[i] = " " then
fin := fin & a[i];
fin;
It worked amazingly well in Crystal Reports but this report now needs to move to Web Intelligence. Is there a way to do this in a Web Intelligence report? Itried but the formula is not recogizable. I tried creating a variable and using this formual but I couldn't get it to work. I appreciate all helpful responses. The version of Web Intelligence I am using is SAP Business Enterprise XI. I am working in a PC environment using Windows 7 if that helps at all.
Thank you!
Lauren

Hi Lauren, Please provide with some sample data...
In SQL, by writing some Functions/Procedures you can eliminate special characters. Ask your database team to do that.
or
Create an object with the following syntax... It Works in SQL.
= REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE
(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE
(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE
(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE([String_Object],'&',' '),'*',' '),'(',' '),'^',' '),'%',' '),'!',' '),'@',' '),'#',' '),'$',' '),'~',' '),')',' '),'+',' '),'=',' ' ),'-',' '),'_',' '),'/',' '),':',' '),';',' '),',',' '),'<',' '),'.',' '),'>',' '),'?',' '),'"',' '),'''',' '),'[',' '),']',' '),'{',' '),'}',' '),'\',' '),'|',' ')
Example: Input: '~!@#$%^&*()_+{}:"<>-=[]./\|/*-+ascdfv123'
Output: ascdfv123

• Try to show special characters in a JLabel

Hi everybody,
I have a big problem with special characters and to display them.
At the moment I'm writing an Applet where you can type in
in a JTextField stuff like Θ ζ Φ ω ξ.
Then you press a JButton and the method TextField.getText();
gives the input to a String. After that with the method
Label.setText(String);
i want to display the special characters, but they weren't shown.
Instead of its the typed in characters (Θ ζ Φ ω ξ) appear.
If I hardcode it, it works and every special character i want is displayed.
Label.setText("Θ ζ Φ ω ξ");
So what is wrong?
If some things are not so clear don't hesitate to ask me
Thanks in advance
swachtar

hi,
I think I have an idea of what is going wrong with your code:
The text in the JTextField is stored as a String in the Document. However, each character typed into the field will be stored separately, that means that the six characters typed have to be merged into one. So try creating a new String object from the textfield data and pass this one to the label:
JLabel label;
JTextField textField;
label.setText(new String(textField.getText()));
I don't know whether this works, but this is the only idea comming to my mind right now.
best regards, Michael

• Mapping error because of special characters

Hello,
We are extracting data from SAP system and sending it thru XI to 3rd party system (writing xml files on to file server).
Now, because of presence of few special characters in the data, there is a mapping exception error in XI.
The data which is causing the issue is "ABRANCENTRO MEDIAÇÃO IMOBILIÁRIA".
In SXMB_MONI, i see that this is failing is Request Message mapping step.
We can not remove special characters as this is master data. How can i fix this issue?
DO i need to use any modules in communication channel for this purpose?
Any leads are highly appreciated.
Thanks,
Chandra

Hi Chandra,
an UDF cant help you assumedly coz that characters lead to "not wellformed" XML. Any parser would complain about that. So the PI parser would throw an error before executing the UDF.
The question is: what does the receiver expect? You wrote you like to write xml files to a server. But if the XML is not wellformed, the receiver would not be able to parse them, and therefore usually not able to process them.
If you really want to create such a file (not wellformed XML) you can create that with a not parsing mapping (ABAP or Java). So you map the message just with string operations. This is not very recommentable and only possible for very simple mapping cases.

Udo

• Handling Special characters in the data set

Hi All,
I am facing an issue in hadling special characters while writing data to a flat file.
The data fetched in toad query is *44CAÑADO* (with some specail character over N), but when this same data is written in textpad using UTL_FILE.put_line, the data written is converted to *44CAÑADO*.
Can anyone please help me how to handle these special charatcers so that the same data is written in text file as well.

• Special Characters in the payload

Hi,
We are receiving Payload from Source Service Provider with some special characters “ and as shown below:
“Maintenance Documentation Libraryâ€? under “Transformer Bushings Surveyâ€?
Those Special Characters are actually double quotes.
“Maintenance Documentation Library” under “Transformer Bushings Survey” .
PI While reading the payload is taking it as a special character. JMS is the sender adapter we are using.
Is there any way to handle this without writing any module or Java Mapping??
Regards
Srilatha

Hi Srilatha,
You can try to change the character encoding with the standard modules like this document point out: http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/502991a2-45d9-2910-d99f-8aba5d79fb42?overridelayout=t…
From my own experience it is more useful to have a general java mapping to avoid this problem and to use it in all the required scenarios-

• Special characters / accents in BB 8330 Messenger

I'm having problems adding special characters/accents (á, é, í, ó, ú, ñ) in my new Curve 8330 BB messenger. I used to have a World Edition 8830 and had no problems at all. I've tried holding the letter key and rolling the trackball to the left/right but only the upper case form of the letter appears and actually, this is being done by pressing the letter, not because of the rolling of the trackball. I tried changing the input language to Spanish or French but still it's not working.
I can add them without a problem in an email, memoPad, etc. Also I have no problems when writing in the Windows Live Messenger I downloaded, but have no luck when it comes to the BB messenger.
Is there a way I can add these special characters/accents in my BB messenger? I have the Blackberry 8330 (CDMA), version 4.3.0.127 (Platform 3.1.0.73)
Thanks.

please read some previous discussions about SMS characters encoding, as well as the solution that will enable you to type spanish characters.

• Dynamic SQL Query to Find Special Characters in Table columns

Hi,
I am new to OTN FORUMS.
I am trying to find the columnsi of a table which have special characters in them.
I am planning on using this query
select ' select INSTR('||column_name||', chr(0))
from '||table_name||'where INSTR('||column_name||', chr(0)) >0' from user_tab_columns
where table_name='Account'
and spool the output to run as a script.
Is this the right way or do u suggest any modifications to the query?
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
I think your basic approach is right. Since you can't hard-code the table- or column names into the query, you'll need dynamic SQL.
Instead SQL-from-SQL (that is, writing a pure SQL query, whose output is SQL code), you could do the whole job in PL/SQL, but I don't see any huge advantage either way.
When you say "Special characters", do you really mean "one given special character" (in this case, CHR(0))?
Will you ever want to search for multiple special characters at once?
What if table foo has a column bar, and in 1000 rows of foo, bar contains CHR (0). Do you want 1000 rows of output, each showing the exact position of the first CHR(0)? If the purpose is to look at theese rows later, shouldn't you include the primary key in the output? What if CHR(0) occurs 2 or more times in the same string?
If you'd rather have one row of output, that simply says that the column foo.bar sometimes contains a CHR(0), then you could do something like this:
SELECT     'foo',     'bar'
FROM     dual
WHERE     EXISTS (
SELECT  NULL
FROM       foo
WHERE       INSTR ( bar
, CHR (0)
) > 0
);

• Using accents/special characters in keyboard WAY TOO SLOW!

I'm often using french, and thus many words have many accents (just a short phrase exemple : l'été passé j'ai dû boire l'amère potion de la déception... A short sentence, 5 accents. Can be worse).
I'm typing pretty fast, and already getting frustrated because the french keyboard doesn't have the ' included, which would save so much time in contractions. (Would probably be added automatically if I could use the corrector, but I can't, cause switching from french to english all the time, I just get stupid jumble all the time).
But the worst of the worst is each time I need to type an accented letter, I lose 2.5 seconds! Because that's how long it takes for the accents options to pop-up after I hold my finger on the letter...
It's completely ridiculous!
Typing a short 3 letter word like "été" takes over 6 seconds!
It makes me so mad!
I almost completely stopped writing my french emails or Facebook updates and such from my iPod Touch and prefer to wait until I'm on my MBP! Is that normal when you have the chance to own the Touch?!
I've contacted Apple about this many months ago, but like any complaint I've had in the past, never heard of them.
Has anyone else have such a delay with the accents/special characters keyboard (popups)?
Is there something I can do?

Simply copy and paste. Just did it and it worked. Perhaps I'm not understanding something. What do you mean by "insert a font."
