Writing to dvd with super drive - speed?

I understand from the user manual that I can write to either + or - dvd disks. However they are sold with different speed ratings. Which speed of disk should I buy? Also, in anticipation of further questions, if in 6 months time faster dvd disks are being sold, can I start using faster disks?
Thanks, LJ

Hi Louis XV11:
I understand from the user manual that I can write to
either + or - dvd disks. However they are sold with
different speed ratings. Which speed of disk should I
buy?
If you have the first generation of MB's then you can write to DVD's at 4X and a second generation (LATE 2006) you can write at 6X.
Nowadays you can use any speed, if the disk is rated faster than your drive, it will use your max drive speed, ( so if you have a 16X disk and a 6X drive it will burn at 6X) and if the speed rating is slower than you drives max speed, it will burn at that speed, so you don't need to worry.
For Important data, I would recommend either Apple or Verbatim Disks, and for video, home movies (iMovie, iDVD) use -R.
Also, in anticipation of further questions, if
in 6 months time faster dvd disks are being sold, can
I start using faster disks?
As above

  • Cannot burn data dvd with super drive

    Hello together,
i try to burn a dvd in my Mac mini with superdrive using the disk-utility.
It is possible to delete a DVD +RW (fast or normal)
It is not possible to set a new name for the disk
It is not possible to burn the disk ("not enough space")
    I'm logged in as admin.
What do i have to do else to burn a dvd?

Quite cool + thanks a bunch!
I still don't know (but for the moment: i don't care anyway ;-)) why it's not possible with the Disk utility, the "Help" sytem makes a lot ado about. Anyway, for the moment i'm happy again :-D
Good night from the other side of the ocean,

  • Super Drive Speed

While burning or reading a data DVD the read speed is limited to 1.2x. Reading a 4.7G data from a DVD is painfully slow. Is there some setting or driver needed for improved data throughput while using windows file explorer? Antivirus is also turned off with no help in efficiency.

I wish there was an answer, I had the same problem using parallels. I guess the hardware is just optimized for macs? My best bet is to see if you can't do the burning on your mac side, my super drive works just fine in there. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

  • A DVD external super drive on a Macbook-pro 15', any chance to work?

Hey! I bought a macbook-pro 15’ in 2009 which does generally well. Nevertheless it has a problem concerning the DVD internal drive. It doesn’t read   anymore and I have tried to clean with no effect. Few days ago I bought an external USB super drive from Apple store. I did so because I did not like to give my computer back for service, when I need it all the time for my work. I thought with that I would have solved my problem. Now I realized that things are not so easy, I must have made a mistake. Macbook-pro 15’ is not supposed to be connected to an external USB super drive. Can I still do something to make it work? Thanks

Apple designs external Superdrive to only work with computers that shipped without an optical frive. Why don't you save yourself much grief & return it. Then purchase any USB drive you want, just not a Superdrive. Thousands on the market & they will work just fine with your computer.

  • Replacing combo drive with super drive

I think my iMac G5 needs a new optical drive, because I frequently get the error "failed to calibrate the laser power" when trying to burn from iTunes. (Yes, I've tried all the usual remedies: Different media, cleaning the lens, changing the burn rate... The Apple store genius say they see this "a lot," and it's probably the drive.)
My G5 has its original combo drive, but I've never burned a DVD and don't expect to with this machine. So my question is: Would there be any problem in replacing the combo with a super drive? Would the OS be able to "recognize" the different device and adjust for any differences?

You're right -- I had super and combo reversed. (Actually, the website I was looking at when I posted had them reversed.) I currently have the super drive (MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-845) that came with the iMac.
I can get an Apple combo drive replacement for $95 or a super for $145. There will not be any labor cost. So what I'm considering is replacing the super with a combo. I'm set on keeping it internal. My only concern would be that the change might cause some sort of system errors.

  • Will Extreme Help With Network Drive Speed ...

I was happy with my Snow Airport until I bought a ethernet based network attached storage. It takes forever to copy any big files and streaming a dvd file for watching is very choppy.
I am considering Extreme base station. Will you be able to stream a DVD file fast enough to watch? Anyone, Anyone?

You mention you have a Snow Airport. That model only has 802.11b - about 500-800K/s on a good, quiet network.
You talk about buying the new Extreme model. That will get 1,500 - 2,500K/s on a good, quiet network.
That will let you watch the DVD with 'less' choppyness, but it still won't be as good as reading straight from the DVD.
Typically if you care about watching DVDs, I'd suggest using a DVD ripper to turn it into a Quicktime / DIVX movie of some sort, which would then be small enough to easily view over even your Snow Airport BS's network (and would be great with the Airport Extreme BS).
I can't agree with any of the suggestions from the prior poster. The issue is unlikely to be RAM (assuming you have enough to run OS X and aren't running other tasks in the background) or NAS speed; your network speed is vastly faster than your wireless network speed, so I wouldn't even worry about that.

  • Possible dead DVD/CD super drive? Options?

So the problem is that my DVD/CD drive does not even read commercial CD's or DVD's. I can't even hear the disk try to spin. It just spits any disc out after about 45 seconds. From what I read, this means the drive is dead and I need a new one. I looked here http://eshop.macsales.com/staticpages/Framework.cfm?page=superdrive/sdl_powermacg5.html
for a new drive, and I guess my question is, if this drive is NOT broken, what can I do to fix it, and if it IS broken, is the Apple Genuine SuperDrive DVR-112D-BK a legitimate replacement.
    Thanks,
    Trevor.

Sure does sound like your existing drive is broken. That does happen and it's usually much easier to just replace the drive rather than wasting time trying to figure out what might be wrong with it. You could try a CD/DVD lens cleaner, but if that doesn't work, then replacing the drive is usually in order.
If I were replacing a DVD drive, I'd go with Pioneer's current DVR-118, not the older DVR-112. The 112 is probably at least three years old. With the 118, you not only get better burn speeds, but you'll also get better compatibility with the current media.

When I insert any audio cd an error message comes up- "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer."
These are the same audio CDs that a month ago worked with the same drive and same computer.

  • T530 Replacing DVD with HDD drive

    Hello, Lenovo community!
I decided to upgrade my new T530 with SSD OCZ Vertex4 drive.
Put it instead of preinstalled 1TB WD hdd drive. Remove DVD and put 1TB WD via ESPADA SS12: http://www.nix.ru/autocatalog/notebook_accessory/Espada_SS12_SATA_HDD_SATA_118550.html
Laptop can`t see 1TB WD: in bios and in windows too. BIOS revision 2.53, latest
Hard-drive and Hdd-bay 100% working (checked it by connecting these stuff to desktop computer)
I am completly confused by this situation. Please advice!
Sorry for my English, this language is not my native one.

Installing hdd in original Lenovo bay (tenfold difference in price - in Russia) solved this problem. I think that lenovo specifically use non standard pins for powering hdd. They don't want to lose money on accessories... pretty lame. Anyway, everything in this case works fine now.

  • Non-Standard Disc Burning With Super Drive

So I read this article: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58641
Then I got one of those 80mm to 120mm CD adapters and loaded my 80mm disc into the drive. No problems what-so-ever inserting or ejecting.
So here's the problem: It won't burn. After spinning it around for a bit, it spits it out. Every application from Toast to iDVD to iTunes.
Is this a limitation of the drive? Will it NOT even try to write a disc smaller than 120mm? Nor will it play the discs. DVD-R nor CD-R.
Is there a way to tell it to write a smaller disc? My old tray burner will read and write 80mm discs either in the adapter or not. So it seems to be strictly a hardware issue, which is too bad as the Superdrive blows my external out of the water ...

Wow! You guys are something. 80mm to 120mm adapters are common. They are not hard on the drives at all! What could be hard on them!? It's a piece a plastic that clips onto the 80mm drive and turns it into a standard 120mm disc. AND nobody said Apple was the only slot loader that didn't accept 80mm discs.
Also, there would be no change to the hardware at ALL! The laser presently reads from the inside out. Clip on an adapter so the hardware draws the 80mm disk in just like a 120mm disk. The hardware spins the disc from the center hole just like a 120mm disc. The laser reads the disk starting from the center just like a 120mm disc. What's happening is the drive's firmware, or OS X's drive software must be telling it to ignore the smaller disc capacities of 80mm discs. Otherwise the 80mm disc in its 120mm adapter spins quietly in my drive no differently than a normal 120mm disc. It is not hard on the equipment. However, after the drive reads it, it spits it out, no differently than inserting a pre-recorded disc when trying to burn a blank one.
My guess is that if the drive readily recognized 80mm discs and someone succeeded at burning and/or playing them, people might be tempted to do it all the time and eventually lead to stuck discs and warranty claims no matter how careful they were.
So I'm back to this being a software issue, which should be able to be patched. I'm happy to entertain other theories, if they are more than statements of fact without any supporting arguments.

  • Dissapointed with hard drive speed

i have the pavillion elite i7, just bought it but I am transferring 113GB of files from a folder in windows explorer onto my desktop and i notice that the speed is rated at 32.3 MB /sec
the total time to transfer these files is 1 full hour
i feel like this is way too slow.. can anyone else confirm?
why would HP ship me a desktop computer perceived to be high end and yet the hard drive is so slow it seems to be like a ball and chain dragging down the whole system

32.3 MB/s is not too bad for a single drive setup in a laptop. You might get in the 40s best case. Not sure which exact drive you have but the fastest single drives would have a 16 or 32 meg cache; yours might be an 8 meg cache. Keep in mind Windows holds the speed down a bit as it checks for file permissions and antivirus also plays a part in this. 113 gigs is a lot to transfer and it cannot be done instantly.

  • Can I replace DVD with SSD drive on Satellite P?

    Hi everyone !
I would like to know if I can replace DVD by caddy's SSD ?
If I do it about that, Do I loose my warranty ?
    Thanks.

I dont know what notebook model you have but in most cases such replacement (ODD ? SSD) would work in case the notebook would support the slim-select bay.
This was the case in older Tecra and Portege notebooks
I guess Satellite notebooks dont support such upgrade but this is just an assumption..
    Warranty?
Well, if you would disasemble the notebook, the warranty will be canceled

  • CD / DVD surface scan utility / drive speed?

    www.cdspeed2000.com
    I'm an audio engineer.
About a year ago a friend of mine persuaded me to try out a Mac, which I've used in tandem with my PC since I got it. I do prefer OS X, but the apparent lack of a CD / DVD surface scan & drive speed app could ultimately be a deal breaker. It is the only thing I've found that my Mac simply cannot do native in OS X (perform a CD surface & sector scan). It's a shame because I really wanted to make the switch. Does anyone know an app that performs similarly to Opti Drive Speed (www.cdspeed2000.com)?

Really, this is the Logic Pro 8 forum? gasp
I figured people working with Logic Pro 8 would have a better chance of knowing about a surface scan app than in another forum.
If I could find a surface scan app with google or versiontracker, would I be asking here?
If it is such an easy utility to duplicate, then why isn't there one for OS X?

  • Can I run 4 super drives with my Mac Mini Server

I have Lion Server downloaded to my Mac Mini (set up as a TV server) and would like to be able to access the 4 USB Super Drive ports via other Mac Mini's in other rooms, 2 Apple TV's if possibe through Apple TV software and maybe Macbook Pro via AirPlay. Are these things possible. The Mac Mini Server is the Best Home television distribution network. Cheaper hardware and fast internet connection based on devices. The above is my goal.
    My individual questions...
Can I place 4 Super Drives in the 4 USB slots and run them?
What is the most effiecent way to be able to server those drives on ONLY my Apple Network (other Mac Mini and 2 Apple TV's)
Can I access multiple drives at once from different devices on my Apple Network?
Can I restrict access to teen and child users based on the TV Rating displayed on DVD in Super Drive? (ex: iTunes recognizes CD's by times of songs and digital fingerprint when I input my Store bought CD or adds it to the Database if its a new title.)
    These would help so much!
    Thanks,
    Stefan
Have any questions on how to turn your Mac into a home Multimedia System, ask.

    no
a dvd drive can never be shared over a network in order to play the dvd drives content
the dvd encryption makes this imposible
you have to rip (which is illegal) each dvd disc to a computer in order to do what you wish to do
and it's not an apple thing it's the case no matter which computer you own

  • Super drive won't recognize audio CDs but will burn

Anything I can do about this?
When Audio CDs are inserted I will hear the drive attempting to load through several cycles then spit it out. Tried multiple CDs and CDs do work in CD player. ALL are original audio CDs not copies, cloned or burned. ALL are clean.
BLANK CDs will seat and allow me to burn through iTunes.
ALL DVDs load and play fine.
I feel like this suddenly happened but can't remember the last time I inserted an audio CD. I completely reformated (clean install) my HD last Thanksgiving, updated all drivers and programs I could find. (not sure about firmware for super drive but I think I found it was the lastest) I swear the CD ROM worked.
Got a new iPod at Christmas and it works fine. Itunes works fine!
Original Mac Mini and updated SuperDrive..... Info here:
I replaced original CD ROM drive with Super Drive about 4 years ago. There has never been a hardware issue. Clean install fixed random CD burn problem.

    Memory: 1 GB
    Bus Speed: 167 MHz

    Ditto for like 2 years.
I have the exact! same problem. A lot of people confuse similar drive problems with ours when diagnosing.
Here's what I have found out, although after 2 years, I haven't been able to completely fix it.
Something related to my login is corrupt or missing. If I log in under my wife's login, and insert the audio cd, everything is perfect. Then if I switch back to my login, everything is perfect for again. However every cd must still be inserted under her login.
I really with this additional post will help somebody who has had this actually answer. It isn't a drive problem, or itunes problem.... and clearly a complete re install of osx isn't necessary.
