Writing to file and GUI

Hi all,
I am developing an application that attempts to write text, a bank account record detailing 4 fields, to a file, the user interface is a GUI with 3 buttons. On pressing one of these buttons the user is presented with another GUI application, which extends JFrame, and gives the user a GUI to fill in based on the option the user selected. Here's the prob, how would I give the user the option to close the second GUI to return to the first to maybe select another option, based on a button selected, I tried putting in a "close" button that calls System.exit(0) bit this closes the whole application. I can get the second GUI to close if the user closes the window by pressing the x in the top right hand corner?
Also, if you aren't confused enough I want the text entered by the user to be put in text to a file the user selects or creates and am wondering if BufferedWriter appends to a file or writes over it, if so can I pass this BufferedWritter Object to maybe a different GUI the user might select on returning to the first GUI and choosing a different option.
I basically want all the info entered by the user to be in the same file no matter which option they select and no matter which GUI they subsequently fill in.
There now, all in one breath, so if any one manages to get this far all replies are greatly appreciated.
Regards.

Create your JFrames, then use
myFirstFrame.setVisible( true );
// time to launch second
mySecondFrame.setVisible( true );
// time to hide second
mySecondFrame.setVisible( false );The simplest file I/O will work for you. Use a FileOutputStream to write the file. I think three lines of code should do the trick. See the API docs for java.io.

  • When downloading iTunes, I got a message about error writing to file and it told the file. Then it said to verify that you have access to that directory. I have no idea how to fix it. I could really use some help, please.

    I was trying to download iTunes on my computer, and while doing so, I got this message: Error writing to file: C:/Program Files (x86)/Common Files/Apple/Apple Application Support/Apple Versions.dll. Verify that you have access to that directory. I have downloaded iTunes numerous times and I have never had this problem. If anyone knows what's going on, I would really appreciate the help.

    Well, there's definitely a mac and a Windows version. And you're at the right page. I think the problem is that someone forgot (or decided not to) to update the text at teh bottom of the page to have Mac and Windows.
    Just push the button, you'll get the Mac update no problem.

    Now that code above produces two errors. First of all.
    local trim();produces the error:
    Syntax error, insert "AssignmentOperator ArrayInitializer" to complete ArrayInitializerAssignementSecondly, if I take that into comments, the line
    setLabel(m.get(LineField.getText()));Produces the error:
    The method setLabel(String) in the type Personnel is not applicable for the arguments (Object)If anybody could help me solve these, I would be sincerely thankfull.
    Now, before anybody asks as to why I want to trim the String in the first place, it is due to the fact that I compare it to another String that is without whitespaces. Thus the field that DOES have whitespaces was preventing me from launching into the if loop:
    if (sortHelp[1]==local) {
                   flag=true;
    (within actionperformed) Or at least that's my explanation as to why the loop never launched. If it is wrong, can somebody please explain?)
    I apologize for the horrible indentation and lack of comments. This is an unfinished version.. I'll be adding the comments last (won't that be a joy), as well as looking for things to cut down on and make the program more efficient.
    Anyways,
    Thanks in Advance,

  • New to Applets: Problems wiht writing to files and with scroll panes.

    Hi, I've recently graduated from university and so I have limited experience in java programming and I'm having some trouble with JApplets (this is the first time I've made one). I'm trying to make a simple program that will allow users to pick one of a few background images from a list (a list of jpanels within a scroll pane) then at the click of a button will output a CSS with the background tag set to the image location. This is for use on a microsoft sharepoint site where each user has a My-Sit area which I want to be customizable.
    So far I've been creating this program as an application rather than a JApplet and just having another class that extends the JApplet Class which then displays the JFrame from the GUI Class. This initially didnt work because I was trying to add a window to a container so I kept programming it as an application until I got it working before trying to convert it to a JApplet. I solved the previous problem by changing my GUI class to extend JPanel instead of JFrame and it now displays correctly but with a coupe of issues.
    Firstly the applet will not create/write to the CSS file. I read that applets couldnt read/write to the users file system but they could to their own. The file I wish to write to is kept on the same machine as the applet so I'm not sure why this isn't working.
    Secondly the scroll panel is no longer working properly. This worked fine when I was still running the program as an application when the GUI still extended JFrame instead of JPanel (incidentally the program no longer runs as an application in this state) but now the scroll bar does not appear. This is a problem since I want the applet to remain the same size on the page even if I decide to add more backgrounds to the list. I tried setting the applet height/width to smaller values in the html file to see if the scroll bar would appear if the area was smaller than the GUI should be, but this just meant the bottom off the applet was cut off.
    Could anyone offer any suggestion as to why these thigns arnt working and how to fix them? If necessary I can post my source code here. Thanks in advance.

    Ok, well my program is made up of 4 classes, I hope this isnt too much to be posting. If any explaination is needed then I'll post that next. Theres lots of print lines scattered aroudn due to me trying to fix this and theres some stuff commented out from when the program used to be an application isntead of an applet.

  • Troubles writing to file and printing characters above 127

    Hi,
    Whenever I write to a file or to the standard output (System.out), all characters above 127 are replaced by a question mark.
    I only started having this problem after upgrading to jdk 1.3.1, with previous version all was fine. I'm using slackware linux 7.0.
    output of java -version
    java version "1.3.1"
    Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.3.1-b24)
    Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.3.1-b24, mixed mode)
    After reading a lot about internationalization I still can't solve my problem.
    The output of the following code:
    System.out.println(java.util.Locale.getDefault().getDisplayName());
    System.out.println( System.getProperty("file.enconding"));
    is:
    English (United States)
    null
    Shouldn't the file.encoding property be set?
    I've tried setting it:
    System.out.println( System.setProperty("file.enconding","UTF8"));
    but the aplication simply hangs at that line.
    Please help!

    Hi,
    I am having similiar problem as posted by you in the message - ours is a web application hosted on Apache - JServ, JDK 1.2.1, Servlets, MySQL, and SunOS 5.6. We have recently upgraded to JDK 1.3.1 and SunOS 5.8.
    The application works fine except for the internationalization code.
    The web application support 8 languages. The application works fine for english but for asian languages (korean,japanese,traditional chinese,simplified chinese), all characters are replaced by question marks. Similarly some characters in latin based languages (german,french,italian)are replaced by question marks.
    I am wondering if you can share the solution - i think it should be applicable to us also.
    The mechanism used by us is to set the content type in the HTTPServletResponse object and use output stream writer to send localized information to browser:
    res.setContentType("text/html;charset=EUC_JP");
    OutputStreamWriter out = new BufferedWriter( new OutputStreamWriter(this.oHttpResponse.getOutputStream() ), 512 );
    Regards,
    Kapil Kapoor.

  • Problem about writing txt file and  utl_put_line

    After some research on the internet I found the way how to writre files from Oracle 11g to a txt file.
    I read that utl_put_line only holds 32k per line and adds a new line at the end of each row but my problem it´s that if I want to open the file with SQL Server :D it doesn't recognize the CRLF so there is no end line and the last column has the data from the next row. The files are created on Linux so if I open them on Windows i have to convert into DOS format but if I try to open that file with Excel everything works fine, so I was wondering if there is a limit of columns or number of characters that can be on a txt file.
    There is my pl sql that I used to create my txt files:

    As you can see I write the column names first and with a loop I add the data, so I can have a very large column at the end.
    How can I add the CRLF at the end of each line to have it working with Windows?

    After some research on the internet I found the way how to writre files from Oracle 11g to a txt file.
    I read that utl_put_line only holds 32k per line and adds a new line at the end of each row but my problem it´s that if I want to open the file with SQL Server :D it doesn't recognize the CRLF so there is no end line and the last column has the data from the next row. The files are created on Linux so if I open them on Windows i have to convert into DOS format but if I try to open that file with Excel everything works fine, so I was wondering if there is a limit of columns or number of characters that can be on a txt file.

    Oracle is simply passing a string of characters to the OS to be written to a file in the host OS's native text format. That format is different from Windows and nix.  Windows will append a CR-LF pair to the end of the provided character string, as its end-of-record delimiter.  nix will append only a CR (or is it LF?) as its end-of-record delimiter. This is purely and OS issue that Oracle knows or cares nothing about. It is also something that must always be kept in mind when passing files between *nix and Windows.

    First of all, use [code]-tags to make your code readable, please.
    I didn't do a complete inspection of your code (because it's too much and unreadable as it is) and I don't know POI, but creating a new HSSFWorkbook for each input file sounds fishy to me ... try re-using the workbook and just creating a new sheet in each iteration.

    Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
    Or this - Delete the account in Mail and then set it up again. Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Accounts   Tap on the Account, then on the red button that says Remove Account.

  • Writing agents o/p to external file and if i run the agent again it should

    Hi All,
    i want to run a agent and that result should be displayed in external file system.and i achieved this by using writing VB script and in agents i used actions in that we have invoke server script.And i got the perfect output but what 's my scenario is when i run the agnent again it should create another file with below requirements.
    The file name must contain a suffix containing the date in yyyymmdd format. In cases where the file stored more than once per day, a sequence number must also be provided within the filename.
    (i.e. v1_yyyymmdd, v2_yyyymmdd, v3_yyyymmdd, v4_yyyymmdd, v5_yyyymmdd…)
    And my VB script is like below

    '## Company: Total Business Intelligence / http://total-bi.com
    '## Purpose:
    '## 1. This script takes a file from OBIEE and saves to the file system
    '## 2. Creates a reporting subdirectory if not already present
    '## 3. Creates a further subdirectory with name based on current date
    '## Inputs (specified in Actions tab of OBIEE Delivers Agent):
    '## 1. Parameter(0) - This actual file to be exported

    could you please any body help me out from this....

    I assume you are using Windows. Try to write a batch file so that that would look for the ibot name when ever its finds rename the file name as required.
    This would be easiest way..

  • File importer detected an inconsistency in the file stucture of (file name). Reading and writing this file's metadata (XMP) has been disabled.

    I have duplicated a project to work on another computer. The project opens fine but when I import new footage/audio files I get this message. "File importer detected an inconsistency in the file stucture of (file name). Reading and writing this file's metadata (XMP) has been disabled." Then I can't play my timeline and Premier Pro crashes.  I have to force quit and restart my computer to continue working. What does this error really mean? How do you rectify?
    Our workflow requires that we duplicate projects to make updates because we are frequently revising but need to keep original project unchanged and intact.

    I have a similar issue and message , but occurs when I import AVI clips from OnLocation CS4 to Premier Pro CS4.

    I am trying to update itunes to 11.1.1.11 and keep getting message at the end ' error writing to file :c:\Config.Msi\301ded48.rbf.Verify that you have access to that directory'. What does this mean and how do I fix it?

    I had this exact same problem just now, trying to upgrade to 10.7.
    I even got that error msg when trying to UNINSTALL iTunes!
    After hours of frustration trying everyone's different suggestions, I downloaded Revo Uninstaller http://www.cnet.com.au/apps/revo-uninstaller-10610875/ which solved the problem.
    Use it to help uninstall iTunes and related software components in the following order and then restart your computer:
    1. iTunes
    2. QuickTime
    3. Apple Software Update
    4. Apple Mobile Device Support
    5. Bonjour
    6. Apple Application Support (iTunes 9 or later)
    Then you can install iTunes from scratch.
    Good luck

  • How can I dynamically read a file and show/plot the data in the GUI?

    Hi, everyone,
    I hope to implement a VI with the following function:
    Usually, when we "read a file" in VI and then show the data in the Waveform Chart or other display GUI, the VI will first read and record all of the data from the file and then show them simultaneously. Now, I want to implement a VI, which could read  the data from a file and display it in a time series. That is, I can define a "sampling rate" or "reading rate", like 100 data points / second,  then the data points could be correspondingly shown in Waveform Chart one by one as the time moves on. The key purpose is to simulate a real-time data collection module using an existing file.
    I don't know how to implement this function. Any suggestion and solution are really appreciated.
    Thanks.
    Zhanpeng

    Heres the same effect, just a different approach :
    The code in the red box was used to create data that you would be getting from a file.
    What you could do is (shown above) :
    - Read all of the data
    - Index only one value at a time, and set the 'sampling rate' using a wait in a while loop.
    - Build an array using this value, which will simulate collecting data in real time.
    - I used an array of the iterations as X-values, because they coincidentally correspond to # seconds in my example
    - I then bundled the time array (xvalues) with the values from your file (yvalues)
    - Send that bundle to an XY graph
    That should work, though you could implement some different logic for different sampling rates.
    Let me know if you need a hand with that.

  • Writing the file using Write to SGL and reading the data using Read from SGL

    Hello Sir, I have a problem using the Write to SGL VI. When I am trying to write the captured data using DAQ board to a SGL file, I am unable to store the data as desired. There might be some problem with the VI which I am using to write the data to SGL file. I am not able to figure out the minor problem I am facing.  I am attaching a zip file which contains five files.
    1)      Acquire_Current_Binary_Exp.vi -> This is the VI which I used to store my data using Write to SGL file.
    2)      Retrive_BINARY_Data.vi -> This is the VI which I used to Read from SGL file and plot it
    3)      Binary_Capture -> This is the captured data using (1) which can be plotted using (2) and what I observed is the plot is different and also the time scare is not as expected.
    4)      Unexpected_Graph.png is the unexpected graph when I am using Write to SGL and Read from SGL to store and retrieve the data.
    5)      Expected_Graph.png -> This is the expected data format I supposed to get. I have obtained this plot when I have used write to LVM and read from LVM file to store and retrieve the data.
    I tried a lot modifying the sub VI’s but it doesn’t work for me. What I think is I am doing some mistake while I am writing the data to SGL and Reading the data from SGL. Also, I don’t know the reason why my graph is not like (5) rather I am getting something like its in (4). Its totally different. You can also observe the difference between the time scale of (4) and (5).

    The binary data file has no time axis information, it is pure y data. Only the LVM file contains information about t(0) and dt. Since you throw away this information before saving to the binary file, it cannot be retrieved.
    Did you try wiring a 2 as suggested?

  • Rreading and writing this file's metadata (xmp) has been disabled. Renders unplayable/corrupted files

    Hi everyone,
    I've been using Premiere Pro CC for a while now, as I have a YouTube channel, and I've rendered, exported and edited around a dozen different videos, and have had no issues until now. I haven't done anything to my settings, but randomly, I am now unable to export any videos. I've tried exporting multiple times, using different formats, and I still get the same error:
         File importer detected an inconsistency in the file structure of [FILE NAME]. Reading and writing this file’s metadata (XMP) has been disabled.
    I've looked around, and I've seen just about no help in fixing the issue, so I was hoping that someone could help me out.
    Some of my computer details are:
    Premiere Pro CC
    Toshiba Z10T
    Windows 8.1
    Hopefully that's enough to go by
    Thanks guys

    After moving LR3.5 and catalogs to a new computer running Windows 7 and LR from an XP system, I suddenly had 6400 files with exclamation points--failure to synch metadata or similar warnings on every file.  If I thought I had one without the error, if I clicked on it--there error showed up.    It was very frustrating and I was wondering if I was going to have to keep my old computer forever.
    After I searched for a couple of hours and found that there have been several discussions concerning failures to sync xmp sidecar files and failures to write metadata on this forum and others.  Some of the postings had angry rants against Adobe.  On my system, it was not Adobe that should be blamed, it was Microsoft:
    On one of the Adobe threads, I noticed a post that the person had multiple external drives and the problem did not show itself on one drive.  The person said that changing the permissions on the other hard drives solved the problem.   I tried this and it worked for me.  I did not have this problem with this same drive on my XP system.  I will try to find that other forum and thank the person who gave me the solution.
