Writing to file without spaces!

Hiya :)
I am relatively new (ok, very new :) to Java programming.
I have had my first attempt at creating a program that can create a new file, and then write to it.
The problem is that when I try to write the string "Happy!", It writes " H a p p y !" (with spaces).
Could someone please tell me
a) Why does it do this?
b) Is there any advantage for it to do this?
c) How can I stop this from happening?
d) Is there a better way to write to a file?
Here is the code:
import java.io.*;
public class writer
     public static void main(String args[])
          File outf = new File("blah.txt");
          try
               DataOutputStream out = new DataOutputStream(new FileOutputStream(outf));
               try
                    out.writeChars("Happy!");
                    System.out.println(""+out.size());
                    out.flush();
               catch(IOException ioex)
                    System.out.println("Error - writeChars");
          catch(FileNotFoundException ex)
               System.out.println("Error - DataOutputStream");
Ok, thanks in advance to anyonewho can answer my question :)
NightCabbage

Try this
import java.io.*;
public class writer
public static void main(String args[])
File outf = new File("blah.txt");
try
PrintWriter out = new PrintWriter(new BufferedWriter( new FileWriter (outf)));
try
out.println("Happy!");
out.flush();
out.close();
catch(IOException ioex)
System.out.println("Error - writeChars");
catch(FileNotFoundException ex)
System.out.println("Error - DataOutputStream");
}

  • Read from file without space at the end

    i want to read some data from a simple text file. when there is a space after the number in the, that number is read successfully. but when there is no space after that number, the code fails. it seems that sun fortran compiler can not read the number when there is the new line sign exactly after the number.
    is there any compiler switch of an option in read or open statement to overcome this problem?
    i checed the code with other compilers (gfortran and intel fortran compiler) and they work fine.
    Regards

    I have not been able to reproduce the problem you describe.
    Could you provide a small program and a data file that
    demonstrates the problem? Also, please let me know which
    version of the compiler you are using. You can find which
    version you are using by specifying the option -V on the
    compiler command line.

  • Help!! Trying to writing an array to a file without having to rewrite the old data every time.

    Hey Everyone,
    I have a vi that takes a 2D array and writes it to an xml file. The purpose for this is to characterize the pathloss through a dowkey 10x10 matrix at varies frequencies. I use this program to create a look-up table for the switch matrix so when I conduct one of my automated tests I can obtain an accurate measurment. The problem with this is I am taking about 299 data points per switch matrix combination leading me to over 32000 data points in the look-up table. The reason I use xml is because each data point needs a header so I can parse through the look-up table with another one of my vi's when I need that pathloss. What I am trying to fix is that when my vi writes to a file it writes one array at a time to save memory space. When it writes it rewrites the old data then the new data. As the number of data points increase so does the lag time to write to the file. By the time I am done it takes about five hours to fully write to the file. Does anyone know of a way to write continuesly write to a file without having to rewrite all of the old data? Attached is my vi for writing to the file, my vi for searching through the file, and an example of one of my look-up tables.
    Thanks,
    Dustin

    The only way to do that is to only append to the end of your file.  This would probably require some rewriting of your header information.

    No, you can't change the default naming scheme. You can do it yourself if you extract the pages using a script instead of using the built-in command.

  • Writing binary data to a file without carriage returns every 512 bytes

    Is there a VI for writing binary data to a file without carriage returns being inserted every 512 bytes?
    Thanks

    Hi Momolxg,
    I could be way off on this. I tried to simulate what you've done by
    making a for loop that would run a set number of times. For my example I
    used 1025. I wired the iteration terminal to a 'Write to SGL File.vi'
    outside the loop with indexing enabled. It wrote the SGL data from 0 to
    1024 to the file. I then read the file with a 'Read Characters from
    File.vi' and searched the output for a carriage return (0D hex). It was
    found five times. The reason why was the SGL number it was reading had a
    13 (0D hex) in it. Perhaps you're running into a similar problem?
    I tried it again, this time using the 'Write to I16 File.vi'. The
    carriage return was found five times: the 28th character the first time
    then on the 512th character four consecutive time
    s after that. I suppose
    that makes sense that you'd find a 0D in the numbers at equal spacings if
    they're incrementing this way... In this case the carriage returns you're
    seeing are actually numbers from your data.
    One big difference is that I'm using a set pattern of numbers. This
    doesn't appear to be your case. Is there a better way we can duplicate
    your problem? It sounds interesting. Again my simulation could be way
    off. (I'm also running this on LV60 for Linux so my results could be
    different)

  • Writing to a cell in an existing Excel file without prompt of overwriting

    I am trying to learn communicating with Excel spreadsheet via ActiveX. I started with the Labview example "Write Table to XL", however, this example creates new file which is not my case of overwriting an existing Excel spreadsheet. So, I made my changes to the VI to overwrite an existing file with my new value. Unfortunately, there is always prompt of overwriting the file, and even though I press "yes", the file keeps unchanged.
    The help I need is to kindly :
    1- check my attached VI for any mistakes
    2- make the VI overwriting the file without any prompts

  • How to replace or remove last 500 bytes of a file without rewriting all the file?

    Hi everyone,
    Usually I only ask for help when I can't find a solution for several days or weeks... And guess what? That just happen!
    So, this is what i am trying to do:
    I have a program to ZIP folder and protect them with password, then it encrypts the zip file.
    That it's working fine, until the user forgets his password.
    So, what I want to do is give the user a Recovery Password option for each ZIP file created. I can't use the Windows Registry because the idea is to be able to recover the password in any computer.So i came up with an idea...
    In simple terms, this will work like this:
    0 - Choose folder to ZIP
    1 - Ask user for recover details (date of birth, email etc)
    2 - ZIP folder with password
    3 - Encrypt ZIP file
    4 - Encrypt recover details and convert it to HEX
    5 - Add recover details (in HEX) to the end of the ZIP file (last bytes)
    6 - Add "5265636F76657244657461696C73" which is the text "RecoverDetails" in HEX
    7 - Add "504B0506000000000000000000000000000000000000" this is the final bytes of a ZIP file and will make the Operating System think that is a ZIP file (i know that will give an error when we try to open it.. the ideia is to change the
    extension later and use my software to do all the work to access this ZIP/folder again)
    So, explaining what it's here, I want to say that I managed how to do all of this so far. The point number 6 will help us to determine where the recover details are in the file, or if they actually exist because user can choose not to use them.
    In order to unlock this ZIP and extract it's contents, I need to reverse what I've done. That means, that  need to read only the last 500 bytes (or less if the file is smaller) of the ZIP and remove those extra bytes I added so the program can check
    if the user is inputing a correct password, and if so decrypt contents and extract them.
    But, if the user insert a wrong password I need to re-add those bytes with the recover details again to the ZIP file.
    The second thing is, if the user forgets his password and asks to recover it, a form will be shown asking to insert the recover detail (date of birth, email etc), so we need to reed the last 500 bytes of the ZIP, find the bytes in number 6 and remove the
    bytes before number 6, remove bytes in number 6 and number 7, and we will have the recover details to match against the user details input.
    I have all done so far with the locking process. But i need help with the unlocking.
    I am not sure if it's possible, but this what i am looking for:
    Read last 500 bytes of a file, remove the bytes with recover details and save the file. Without reading the whole file, because if we have a 1GB file that will take a very long time. Also, i don't want to "waste" hard drive space creating a new
    clone file with 1GB and then delete the original.
    And then add them back "in case user fails the password" which should be exactly the same.
    This sounds a bit confusing I know, even to me, I am writing and trying to explain this the better I can.. Also my English is not the best..
    Here it goes some code to better understanding:
    'READ LAST 500 BYTES OF ZIP FILE TO CHECK IF IT CONTAINS RECOVER DETAILS
    Dim oFileStream As New FileStream(TextBox_ZIP_to_Protect.Text & ".zip", FileMode.Open, FileAccess.Read)
    Dim oBinaryReader As New BinaryReader(oFileStream)
    Dim lBytes As Long = oFileStream.Length
    oBinaryReader.BaseStream.Position = lBytes - 500
    Dim fileData As Byte() = oBinaryReader.ReadBytes(500)
    oBinaryReader.Close()
    oFileStream.Close()
    Dim txtTemp As New System.Text.StringBuilder()
    For Each myByte As Byte In fileData
    txtTemp.Append(myByte.ToString("X2"))
    Next
    Dim RecoveryDetailsPass_Holder = txtTemp.ToString()
    'Dim Temp_2 = txtTemp.ToString()
    'RichTextBox1.Text = txtTemp.ToString()
    If txtTemp.ToString.Contains("505245434F47414653") Then
    'we have password recovery details(the numbers mean RecoverDetails in HEX)
    'next we will get rid of everything before and after of string "cut_at"
    Dim mystr As String = RecoveryDetailsPass_Holder 'RichTextBox1.Text
    Dim cut_at As String = "505245434F47414653"
    Dim x As Integer = InStr(mystr, cut_at)
    ' Dim string_before As String = mystr.Substring(0, x - 1)
    Dim string_after As String = mystr.Substring(x + cut_at.Length - 1)
    RecoveryDetailsPass_Holder = RecoveryDetailsPass_Holder.Replace(string_after.ToString, "")
    RecoveryDetailsPass_Holder = RecoveryDetailsPass_Holder.Replace("505245434F47414653", "") ' this is RecoverDetails in HEX
    RecoveryDetailsPass_Holder = RecoveryDetailsPass_Holder.Replace("504B0506000000000000000000000000000000000000", "") ' this is the bytes of an empty zip file
    'AT THIS POINT WE HAVE ONLY THE RECOVER PASSWORD DETAILS (date of birth, email etc) IN THE VARIABLE "RecoveryDetailsPass_Holder"
    '////////////////////////////////////////////////////// TO DEBUG
    'MsgBox(string_after.ToString & "505245434F47414653")
    'InputBox("", "", string_after.ToString)
    '\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ TO DEBUG
    'Temp_2 = Temp_2.Replace(RecoveryDetailsPass_Holder.ToString, "")
    Now that we have the recover details, we need to remove them from ZIP in order to the software try to unzip it with the password provided by the user on the GUI.
    If the user needs to recover the password we have the details already in RecoveryDetailsPass_Holder variable and just need to match them against user input details.
    If the user fails, we need to put the RecoveryDetailsPass_Holder back on the file.
    Any question just ask, it's a bit trick to explain i think, but please ask.
    Anyone know how to do this?
    Many thanks in advanced.

    @ ALL
    Thank you very much for you help. I know that if I'm "playing" with bytes you should assume that I know a lot of VB.net, but I don't know that much unfortunately. I am not a beginner but I am still very fresh and I probably do stuff that work but
    probably not in the best way...
    Anyway, I will explain the idea of this little software I'm making. Once I wanted to create a program to protect folders with password, and I came up with something to change folder permissions to lock access to them, and that actually worked fine and quickly.
    However, I managed how to "crack" the protection by going to folder properties, security tab and then give permissions back to my username. So that, to me, wasn't a safer system to protect folders, also I want the ability to use passwords. So I search
    and search online for a way to do it, and someone replied (to someone with the same question as me) that the best option would be to create a zip with all contents of the folder, with password and then change the extension from .zip to .whatever and register
    the new extension .whatever on the Windows Registry, so that file will have an icon and open with my software.
    So I did...The program zips everything, change the extension and I added the encryption to avoid people changing the extension to ZIP or trying to open with 7-Zip or similar and be able to see the protected files names in the .zip/.whatever

    @Armi
    "System.IO.FileStream.SetLength"
    I know I tried that but I erased the code because it didn't work for some reason, I don't remember why sorry, was long time before I created this post.
    The last code I was trying to use was this:
    ' Set the stream position to the desired location of the stream.
    Dim fileStream As IO.FileStream = _
    New IO.FileStream(TextBox_ZIP_to_Protect.Text & ".zip", IO.FileMode.Append)
    Try
    ' Set the stream (OFFSET) position to the desired location of the stream.
    fileStream.Seek(210, IO.SeekOrigin.Current)
    Dim Bytes_do_ZE As Byte() = HexStringToByteArray(Temp_2.ToString)
    'Write Characters ASCII
    For Each Byte_Do_Zeca As Byte In Bytes_do_ZE
    fileStream.WriteByte(Byte_Do_Zeca)
    Next
    Finally
    fileStream.Close()
    End Try
    and we need this:
    Private Shared Function HexStringToByteArray(ByRef strInput As String) As Byte()
    Dim length As Integer
    Dim bOutput As Byte()
    Dim c(1) As Integer
    length = strInput.Length / 2
    ReDim bOutput(length - 1)
    For i As Integer = 0 To (length - 1)
    For j As Integer = 0 To 1
    c(j) = Asc(strInput.Chars(i * 2 + j))
    If ((c(j) >= Asc("0")) And (c(j) <= Asc("9"))) Then
    c(j) = c(j) - Asc("0")
    ElseIf ((c(j) >= Asc("A")) And (c(j) <= Asc("F"))) Then
    c(j) = c(j) - Asc("A") + &HA
    ElseIf ((c(j) >= Asc("a")) And (c(j) <= Asc("f"))) Then
    c(j) = c(j) - Asc("a") + &HA
    End If
    Next j
    bOutput(i) = (c(0) * &H10 + c(1))
    Next i
    Return (bOutput)
    End Function
    That code, as I understand, is to search for the OFFSET of the bytes in the file and start to write from there... That OFFSET should be the beginning of the 500 bytes read on the code before. I got the OFFSET position "210" reading the file with
    the HEX editor "HxD - Hexeditor v1.7.7.0" but using the OFFSET won't work because every file, password, recover details and so on, are different and so the file size, changing the OFFSET I
    think.
    @Reed Kimble
    Does that sound like something which might work for you?
    Thanks for your help. That might be some solution, however it seams a bit of the same problem where we need to read the bytes again to get the recover details. But, as I said in this post, because this is meant to password protect folders, do you think that
    will apply as well?
    @Crazypennie
    Thanks for your reply.
    All this appears really weak. The user has your application since he need it to open the file .... and the code in the application contain the code to read the file without knowing the password. Therefore anyone can read your code and retrieve the
    data without the password ... if he knows VB.
    The application can only open the file if the user didn't use a password to protect the file. Because the file is encrypted and needs to be unencrypted first.
    When the application tries to open/read the file, will need to decrypt it first and then check for a password and do the validation. Also the application is with the code masked/protected which i think it might not be easy for reverse engineering.
    - You need to use a web server and a symmetric key encryption
    This a good idea, besides I don't know how to implement it. However the idea is to be able to:
    1 - Protect a folder anywhere in any Windows computer (portable app)
    2 - Recover password details (security question) in any computer, online and offline
    And I think we need a computer always connected to the Internet to use that method, right?
    @ Mr. Monkeyboy
    Thank you very much for your effort.
    I just wanted to let you know that the zip method you are using is no longer supported.
    I didn't actually knew that. Thanks for letting me know.
    Do you require the compressed encrypted files to actually be Zip files or could they just be compressed files that have nothing to do with Zip?
    No, it doesn't need to be a .zip extension. I am actually using my own extension. It starts as a Zip but then I changed to my own extension which I have registered on the Windows Registry.
    @ ALL
    Thanks again to all for trying and spending time helping me.
    By the way, I might not be able to answer or try any code during the weekend... It's easter break and family is around. Have a nice easter everyone. :)

  • How can I load pics from camera without spaces in the filename (PSE5)

    Hello,
    I want to load the pics from my Fuji Camera with my newly acquired Photoshop Elements 5 into its database as simple as possible. I get offered several ways of renaming the pics during the import. Unfortunately the date formats offered (for folder or filenames) do *all* include space characters " ", which I do not like, because this caused me earlier a lot of trouble when putting the pics online, for example (%20 in the path name). Another reason is my existing photo collection since 2001, which has no spaces in the filenames as well.
    Example for the filename:
    PSE offers: "jj mm dd 001.jpg"
    I want : "jjmmdd_001.jpg" or at least "jj_mm_dd_001.jpg" or anything similar.
    For folder names the same thing appears.
    Is there a way to do that without typing each date without spaces by hand?
    How?
    I would like to have the photo load process as simple as possible, without having to remove the spaces with a separate rename tool.
    Any ideas?
    I searched for quite a while and I am surprised that nobody else seems to have this problem. Am I just too picky?
    Thank for any help.
    Greetings from Germany,
    Ulrich

    Ken,<br />again thanks for your writing.<br /><br />IMHO, if PSE had space free filenames, this would lead to a very simple and fast workflow with PSE alone (!) like this:<br /><br />1. Just connect my camera (Fuji F31fd) with the USB cable (no fiddling with the memory card in and out each time)<br />2. Transferring all (or selected) pics into PSE, one folder per day, named yymmdd_optional_theme_description.<br />3. Delete all non-optimal pics after viewing in PSE. Then tagging, pic-improving where needed ....<br />4. As backup, burn/move to CD from time to time and copy/move to an external HDD for double security.<br /><br />Its just the spaces in the filenames which prevents me from using this. I want to have the workflow well defined and fixed before I start using PSE5. <br />But it seems there is no workaround (so far).<br /><br />Maybe I should just take the "trouble" and rename every folder manually within PSE. No problem with one or 2 days, and still not a very big problem after a 3 week holiday. But still all single photo files will have the spaces in them. If I want to avoid that, I really have to bring them to the PC without PSE, rename them as batch with Irfan or any other tool, and then import them to PSE, as you wrote. From my point of view, a lot of unnecessary hassle, especially if I have the simple workflow from above in mind.<br /><br />Many people seem not to be disturbed by the spaces in the filenames. I wonder if I overrate the disadvantage of it. Your opinion(s)?<br /><br />I am not sure what you mean with<br /><Perhaps Ulrich would be well served if he created a collection of newly acquired pictures with a common theme.><br /><br />In fact I want to come away from theme centered archiving the photos, which is what I did so far. I learned this from the article <br />http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1018&message=26366116 <br />and the following one from Arrowman. I won't follow all what he wrote *in detail*, but most ideas seem to be good. The PSE tagging should do the theme-related searches.<br /><br />Greetings,<br />Ulrich

  • Mplayer can't play files with spaces in their name

    After scratching my head and reinstalling codecs several times without luck, and old memory resurfaced of this occuring before and I managed to solve the problem.
    The thing is that if you doubleclick a file in Nautilus, and said files has spaces in its name, mplayer won't be able to play it, and gives a very cryptic error message, ie "cannot play file a%20b.avi" if the name of the file is "a b.avi".
    The trick is mentioned in this thread -- you edit /usr/share/applications/mplayer.desktop and change 'Exec=gmplayer %U' to 'Exec=gmplayer %F'.
    The bug has been around forever, and hasn't been fixed yet. Perhaps the mplayer devs don't want to fix it. In any case, I would propose that either we fix this in the mplayer Arch package, or that someone more knowledgeable than I get in touch with the devs about it.
    Just a suggestion, but I think it's kind of important. It's really confusing to new users.

    In my opinion, it it's not arch's job to fix bugs from upstream, no matter if it's mplayer or gnome's fault. Of course there are exceptions, eg if a bug in a critical package hardlocks the whole system, or adds a huge security risk.
    I would like to belive that the general arch user is smart enough to find one of the 30 threads about this bug (or the entry on the bugtracker) and fix it themselves. Personaly I would put this in the same category as packages that don't have a .desktop file at all from upstream.
    Oh, and as a small sidenote: http://phraktured.net/patching-patching-patching.html

    Hi jverd
    What are you having trouble with?
    I know how to use the BufferedReader and BufferedWriter for opening, reading and writing to file. But the trouble consists in a lot of code to write and how will I call the appropriate file name since it is supposed to be
    the same name as the thread into all of this? I still don't know what problem you're having.
    You know how to provide a file name, right?
    Do you know how to get a thread name?
    If both are "yes", then I don't see what's left that you'd be having problems with. You need to be specific. Nobody here can read your mind, since it's the holidays.
    Writing to a file?
    Yes, I'm getting the correct results to the console with the thread name and the calendar option with the date and time and this is the data that needs to be written to a file. Isn't there a more simple way?A simpler way than your current code? How can anybody answer that without seeing your code?
    What would I need to do to write the same information 1000 times to the file?
    Because that is part of the requirements. Is not that I am insane :0).... This is just part of developing my skills since I'm new to all this. So, do you still have a question about this part? You do know how to loop, right? If not, you shouldn't be getting anywhere near I/O or multithreading.

  • "Error in writing to file" during AS setup -- ?

    Hello!
    I am having an odd problem":
    Trying to install AS 9.0.2 or AS Infrastructure 9.0.2, I receive an error box saying "Error in writing to file <path>". Sometimes I see four buttons (help/retry/ignore/cancel) and I can ignore and proceed, sometimes there are only three, without ignore, so I have to cancel the installation.
    The thing is, this error box always shows up at different file! So apparently the problem is not with some particular file, but somewhere else. If I go and check the "problematic" file -- hey, it's already there, copied successfully!
    One time I was lucky and I only got one such error and ignore button was there, so I ignored the error and then setup went till the end. But now I need to reinstall AS infrastructure and three times in a row I am getting these errors again and again :(
    Had anyone seen things like that? Is there any resolution to this problem?
    Thank you,
    Sasha.

    For those who're interested, I managed to work-around this problem: instead of installing off the network share, I actually burned 3 CDs and installed AS Infrastructure from them. Things went smoothly. Not sure why it could not install from the network share, but that's how it is.
    Sasha.

  • Rendering error while writing to file...Quicktime

    Hi all,
    I am brand new here and have an urgent question. I have been getting an error in After Effects CS6 whenever I try to render to a quicktime movie that says "Rendering error while writing to file...An output module failed. The file may be damaged or corrupted."
    I have spent days trying to fix this and I have read other peoples posts with the same question but I have cleared my disk cache and reinstalled quicktime without success.
    Any help would be great I am not super technology advanced so try to keep it simple if you can.

  • Why Writing a File Cost Such a Memory?

    As a test case I tried the next code on my Mac OS X 10.2.3:
    import java.io.*;
    public class WriteZero {
    public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception{
    java.io.BufferedOutputStream bs = new java.io.BufferedOutputStream(new FileOutputStream("zeros"));
    int mb=1024*1024;
    int mb500 = mb*500;
    try{
      int k=0;
        while((1==1)){
             bs.write(0x0);
             k++;
           if(k%mb==0){
                Thread.sleep(200);//inessential but enables to work in the back ground
                System.gc();// tries to free memory
            }else if(k>mb500) break;//50mb
    }catch(InterruptedException ie){;
    }catch(java.lang.Throwable th){
        System.err.println(th.toString());
    }finally{
         if(bs!=null) bs.close();
    }This simply writes the size of 500MB of the characters '\u0000.' In the course of writing the free RAM decreases monotonously until it reaches around 6 MB of free memory, recording 919 pageouts. The number 919 of pageouts is very rare on my OS, which has 512MB of RAM. What causes this consumption of memory in simple writing a file?

    Something up with either your VM or VM configuration maybe? I just copied and pasted your code, and it's cruising at just under 6MB - which means maybe 2 MB allocated in heap space.
    Verbose:gc indicates that full garbage collections are being done about every second, but that the heap is a stable size.
    Check your max and min heap-sizes, and also try it on a different VM if you can - there's no reason for this program to blow up memory that way. Also should be no need to call GC at all.

    Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
    Or this - Delete the account in Mail and then set it up again. Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Accounts   Tap on the Account, then on the red button that says Remove Account.
