Writing to windows drive from osx?

Hi there, just got my macbookpro, and love it.
I made a windows partition, alocated 15 gigs, what i was wondering is; is there an equivelent to the 'macdrive' wich allowes you to read/write to Fat32 drives while in windows. Is there anything that will let me write to the NTFS partition from the osx side of things?
thanks for your help.
TT.

NTFS is read-only to OS X. There is no software currently that allows a Mac running OS X to write to an NTFS formatted drive. If you format the Windows drive FAT32 then you can read-write from both Windows and OS X.
MacDrive allows Windows to read-write Mac formatted drives.

  • Boot Camp - Read/Write Windows Partition from OSX?

I am assuming that if I format the Windows Partition with FAT32 I can read and write to the Windows Volume from OSX? But not NTFS?

Why not make 3 partitions instead? One with your existing OSX installation and all Mac applications, second in NTSF format for Windows system and Windows applications only and the third one in FAT32 for all data (My Documents, etc.) that will be shared by both OS's?

  • How to restart windows driver from LabVIEW code?

    Hi
I want to restart a window7's driver from my LabVIEW code. Is there any system VI to do that? Which palette should I use in this case? I want to restart windows 7’s driver of the network adapter. I have an Intel network adapter board installed in my system. To this adapter board I have an Intel dirver installed in windows7 operationg system. I want to restart that adapter board from my VI code. Or as alternative I want to disable and enable this adapter board from my VI. How to do that?
    Thanks

Look at the devcon command line utility. I believe you can use it to do most of the functions you can do from the windows device manager.

  • Access Windows Partition from OSX Lion - Tuxera

I am running OSX Lion and I have used Tuxera to gain read/write access to my Windows 7 Partition under Bootcamp.
I am trying to place a shortcut/alias to the desktop in Windows, on my OSX desktop, so I can drop and pickup data there... but the folders have a lock symbol on them, and I cannot seem to be able to write files there. NTFS-3G did not give hte this problem under Snow Leopard.
Does anyone know how to achieve this?

Does anyone know if you can access a windows share from a unix machine using Java?
What options are available? Would a samba client have to be installed on the UNIX server first?

  • Saving pdf on network drive from OSX results in damaged pdf

    Hi,
    I've noticed something weird.
My gf needs pdf's with forms, so the default preview app that comes with OSX does not suffice.
So I downloaded the latest version of Adobe Reader for OSX and she was happy to change the pdf's.
However later I found out that all the files were corrupted. The thing is like this.
The files are on a NAS device (normally copied form a linux boxed by rsync (thus via ssh).
The linux box had issues so she manipulated the pdf's directly on the NAS from an osx machine (using Adobe Reader).
The OSX machine displays the NAS drive fine, so you can navigate to the correct folder and open the pdf. But after saving the time stamp is not changed.
I saw that it created a hidden file of the original pdf of about 10% of the original size. This file cannot be opened or (damaged or corrupted message). I tried to fix / merge it with pdftk but that did not help (I later saw that pdftk is rather old).
However if I save the file directly on the OSX drive it is fine.
To rule things out I changed another file type (.xls) with openoffice and saved it directly on the NAS, this went fine.
Could this be a weird bug in Adobe Reader (as AR corrupts the file on the NAS and openoffice deals with storing a remote file correctly) or might it be something else?

  • How can I have the permission to modified my windows files from OSX?

I've had installed the Windows OS on my macbook pro and I want to modified some files on the  windows 7 folder from the OSX . I can do some operation like copying the file from the windows user folder and paste it on the Macintosh partition hardisk, but i can't delete or paste the file from/into it. The same thing happened when i'm running the Windows 7 OS and i can't modified the files on the OSX folders. How can i fix this? Seems like i should make a master account that can access any kind of files from any OS, but i don't know how? tq

You'll need ad Add-On peice of software. I donm't remember the names but a Google search for "access NTFS volume for OS X" should turn them up and "Access Mac extended format from Windows" should turn up the ones for Windows.

  • Hide Windows Folders from Finder on a Bootcamp System

Does anyone out there know how to "hide" a Windows folder from OSX's finder? My basic dilemma is that I have files in my "My Documents" folder on the Windows side of the house that I don't want Finder to be able to access. (They are inaccessible in Windows unless someone logs in with my account.) Does anyone know a nice way to do this that won't mess with how Windows sees the files? Thanks.

You could change the Finder flag and make it hidden. Afraid I don't have Windows installed, so not sure what, if anything, Windows would make of a Finder flag. Anyway, here's the Terminal command to make some something invisible to the Finder:
    chflags hidden /path/to/folder/foldername
Hit Return after entering the command. Here's an example, where I made a folder named "links" on my Desktop invisible:
    chflags hidden /Users/francine/Desktop/links
To reverse the process you would use "nohidden":
    chflags nohidden /Users/francine/Desktop/links
It's easy to do, and easy to reverse. Whether it would work on something in the Windows file system without adding any confusion to Windows I don't know.

  • If I partitioned my drive from within a bootcamped windows volume will it destroy my GPT scheme and disable my booting ability into Mac OSx?

Alright I consider myself a fairly computer literate person but do excuse me if this issue is not actually all that interesting. Know that I would call apple care but what I am trying to do isn't exactly supported by them so they wouldn't help me. I am setting up my system to triple boot. I did the normal method as far as I can tell. I used bootcamp assistant to shrink my drive and installed windows through that. All went well. So then I had a apprx 400gb mac os volume and a 100gb windows volume. Following the advice from the mactel team over at the ubuntu help site I logged into windows via startup+option. When I did this all volumes popped up. recovery mac and windows. selected windows and then used the windows disk utility equivalent to shrink that partition in half. When I did this I check the disk manager and all was well. all volumes were there and healthy. When I restarted my computer in the boot manager window though only the recovery boot and the windows boot showed up. After doing a little research I figured that the error was negligible and that I could fix it easily enough later so I proceeded to then format the free space volume into an ntfs for the ubuntu setup. When I did that and restarted only the windows boot shows up in the boot menu. When I look through disk manager all of the partitions are where they should be and healthy. The only real clue I've found is that when inside of bootcamp control panel instead of the different volumes showing up as they are normally supposed to it gives me the option of startup from the windows volume the ntfs volume and a pseudo volume that doesnt physically exist that serves the purpose of windows recovery. This makes me think something went wrong with bootcamp. I would rEFIt it and try to see if theres some magic I could work in there but I can't install that program on windows. Additionally I found out that theres some talk that ssd can only handle two bootable partitions and that perhaps when I added a partition it shifted priority to volumes 2 and 3 instead of 1 and 2. I've tried all of the bootup tricks i know and some I looked up. the only one that still works is the boot manager window. The rest just do nothing and then go straight to windows which makes me thing if something happened with bootcamp that all the very low level osx to setup and then run windows on top of that- that now the operation isn't running as planned and windows is actually touching the hardware thus subverting any attempts to use low level osx tricks to get around it. Anyway those are the facts and my thoughts.
Having done more research than when I originally wrote ^^ I now realize that the entire reason for bootcamp (sans driver issues) is to deal with the difference between  the use of GPT and MBR. I am now pretty sure that rewriting any part of the drive from software that uses MBR will mess up the partition scheme of the entire drive. Additionally I've seen a few things about ssd's being weird when they have too many partitions on them. And lastly I have an iso image of my computer right before I started tinkering so if anything I can factory reset and voila(I don't feel like pulling up a french keyboard).
picture from disk manager in windows

I actually managed to get the setup running and relatively stable. There were alot of random issues and quite honestly I was fixing my computer more often that I was using it so I backed out. If anyone wants to do this like I did I would say: It's not easy and definitely not for someone who doesn't know anything about the differences between operating systems and partitioning schemes. That being said I didn't know nearly enough and if you're careful its possible. The steps however aer pretty simple.
Before doing anything get a third party boot handle up and stable on your machine.
    1. Create a partition for Windows
    2. Create a partition for Linux
    3. Bootcamp Windows. This step can be tricky with the extra partition because bootcamp tries to handle all of it for you so it may benefit some people to bootcamp first and then create a linux partition. But that comes with its own set of issues.
    4. Run Linux setup from inside of osX NOT windows.
There are a hundred steps that could come between each of those and I neither have the expertise nor the balls to empower someone who needs to read a forum post how to do it. But it really wasn't more conceptually complicated than that.
Now on to the new issue. I was getting .NET framework incompatibilities and the whole reason I wanted the windows setup was to game so I deleted that partition. When I did that everything went back to normal EXCEPT somewhere somehow the windows boot manager is still buried and when I boot up it tries to boot into windows which obviously doesnt exist anymore. Any advise on how to get rid of this?
to make things clear I'm now running "single" partition.

  • I w system from OSX 10.5.8 to at least 10.6.  Also my hard drive is partitioned for Mac and Windows (which I would like to remove).  How should I upgrade?

I want to buy an Iphone 5 but need to upgrade my operating system from OSX 10.5.8 to at least 10.6.0.  Also my hard drive is partitioned with Mac and Windows.  How can I upgrade?

    1. Click here and buy a Mac OS X 10.6 DVD.
    2. Use the Boot Camp Assistant in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to return the drive to a single partition setup.

    So yeah...
    I'm totally stumped now.
I feel like I've tried every method imaginable, but still no luck.
Printing from OSX 10.6.8 works just FINE.
On the server side, I'm running Windows Server 2008... there's only a local admin and a local user account.
Clients running OSX Lion 10.7.2 -- All updated.
Printer is an HP LaserJet P4010-4510 series.
Workstation is an iMac 21.5-inch, Late 2009
3.06 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Please help!!!
    --- Richard

LPD print service is not enabled by default in Server 2008. It can be enabled via the Print Serveer role, but I am remote and cannot confirm the exact setting.
    As for SMB, the error log is showing;
    Failed to connect to "smb://<username>:<password>@utlab-prsrv-02/"
So it would suggest that there is still an issue with the account detail you are using as you show you have tried this syntax at one stage. If you want to continue to create the queue using SMB rather than LPD then I recommend using the CUPS web page (http://127.0.01:631) to create the queue. This will allow you to enter the syntax exactly as the error message shows. From previous testing I found it was okay to just use the account name rather than domain/account name on a domain bound server.

  • Bootcamp Windows 7 from External Drive Hangs

    Hi All,
I recently removed my Macbook Pro's internal optical drive and replaced it with a 128GB SSD. I am running OSX 10.8.3 off of the SSD but can not get bootcamp to install Windows 7. I walk through the first steps with bootcamp assistant and partition spase for Windows. All is well untill I have to restart the machine and boot into the external optical drive. I select the Windows CD from the boot menu but the MBP hangs on a grey screen with the Apple logo and the drive spins down.
Any suggestions on how to get the MBP to boot from the external optical drive?

Apple admits in one tech note to poor FW800 speeds on Mac Pro.
Hard to get rid of GPT but if you format the drive to MBR in Disk Utility and FAT you can then convert or reformat to NTFS.
No mention of the make of the case.
FW400 is pretty good. But why not use eSATA PCIe and SATA. Native if possible (no FW/USB type cases, or Oxford with multi interfaces). Works for me, using FW400 or Sonnet Tempo E2P or E4P (but not both together in Windows).
The hot fix wasn't that for XP or something?
Motherboards like Gigabyte are coming out with a dual-use port for SATA and USB3. FW seems like proprietary, not really adopted or supported outside Apple.
And I'd say there are problems with NTFS drivers for OS X so that is an issue.
Also, as nice as it may seem, Boot Camp's AppleHFS.sys and HFS+ support for read-only in Windows causes other problems and side effects, like Windows 7's Backup facility to not work.
When I get a drive, I use Windows and the vendor's (WD etc) hard drive diagnostic to do a full test, zero, etc and almost invariably drives formatted in Mac OS had trouble and worked better after such tests and formatting.

  • Mac Drive: What internal or external drives can I 'see' from OSX or Bootcamp?

    Hi All,
I am having a bit of a hard time trying to finalize my port over to macintosh and I am hoping someone can help me understand what I should be able to "see" from where I can see this on my network. I would like to move some data temporarily OFF an external hard drive and ONTO the Internal Drive #1 temporarily so I can use this External Drive for another purpose. But again I can't figure out if I should see this External Drive (C below) and be able to move it to this internal BootCamp drive (#1 below).
I have MacDrive installed on all Windows installs and have the following in my MacPro:
    1. 1TB HD with Windows 7 BootCamp
    2. 500 GB with Windows XP BootCamp
    3. 1 TB with Snow Leopard and Windows 7 via Paralells (I WORK HERE REGULARLY)
    outside the machine I have:
    A. 2 TB Time Capsule via Ethernet to the MacPro (that actually backs up the Laptop Machine wirelessly)
    B. 2 TB Western Digital (that backs up the MacPro drive 3 that I work off and store my data)
    C. Various External drives that I plug into the MacPro via USB
Is it possible to get a handle on whether I need to actually boot into the Window 7 BootCamp Internal HD in order to move this data to this drive and whether I should be able to see this Boot Camp Drive from within OSX? I mean, can I move the data from the Mac Formatted External Drives to the Boot Camp Drive without booting into Boot Camp? Can I see these Mac Formatted Externals from Boot Camp (assuming I have Mac Drive Installed?
Should I expect to see the Time Capsule from the Boot Camp drives?!
    Thanks for any help

OK, you are half way there...
The MacDrive software allows the Windows side to read and write to the MacOS partition.  You are correct, there is a Paragon software you could have purchased for about the same price.  Six of one, half a dozen of the other.  Both products work well.  For some things one may be slightly better than the other,  but either should work fine for what you want.  With this, you should be set when you boot into WIndows using BootCamp.
As I said, you are half way there.  Now you want your MacOS to be able to read and write to your WIndow 7 boot partition.  By default, MacOS can read from teh Windows drive, but can't write to it.  You have a couple of options to try here.  If you do a google search, there was a method to get unsupported read and write access using the native driver with your MacOS that worked for the older versions of OS-X.  I don't know if it still works for Lion or not,  but it might be worth a test.  There is NTFS-3G that you can get for free.  I seem to recall some people had priblems with it when Lion was first released, but I imagine those issues have probably been addressed by now.  There is the option of buying commercial software for this as well.  Here there is another Paragon package that you can but which works very well.  It give you the full read and write access to your Windows drive, and it hasn't had any problems on Lion for me.  Unless you use one of these methods (or something else I haven't mentioned) you will not be able to write to your Windows boot drive when you are running MacOS.  You will be able to read from the drve, just not write to it.

  • I have a maginon film scanner bought from ALDI. It works with windows but with OSX Maverick software it keeps crashing as soon as I try and capture an image. I cannot find details of software updates anywhere.

Same question answered here : https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5762314?tstart=0
I just popped in with using Mavericks (I got rid of my MBP about a year ago, and just got another one when I got an Air for my wife) and noticed that Mavericks is not working and playing well with a couple of programs I already owned (Paraellels, for example...yes, I spelled it wrong...).  I looked for maginon.com and it didn't exist, nor was my google search directed to another location for them, so I postulate that the device may not be in production anymore, thus: no driver updates from the manufacturer.
From my mac-noob-layman's perspective: get some vmware, run windows and use the scanner in your virt machine to capture your images.  Put the images in your mac side and work your mac magic on them there.
    Peace

  • Can I boot into Windows XP from a firewire enclosed Hard Drive? Boot Camp

I understand you can install XP (as long as it has service pack 2 or 3) on an Intel Mac using Boot Camp, but I was wondering if it would be possible to take a HD from a PC computer which already has XP installed, and, using an firewire HD enclosure, boot the Mac into XP from that. Would this be feasible?

Yes, but not exactly. The page says:
"Can I install Windows on an external drive?
No. Installing Boot Camp on an external hard drive is not supported."
But I don't want to install Windows, I want to boot my computer into it.
    It also says:
"External FireWire disks are not recognized by the Startup Disk control panel in Microsoft Windows. To start up from a bootable external drive, press and hold the Option (Alt) key while the computer starts up, then select the external disk."
I don't mind if external disks won't appear under Windows, as long as I can still boot into it.
I found another helpful post:bootcamp windows 7 Firewire external drive NTFS?
    Here someone writes:
"I still use Windows XP with my Mac but still never had such a problem with my two Firewire external HDs (one FW400 and one FW800).
And I did a lot of things with these
Partioned one for use with OSX and Windows (one HFS+ partition; one NTFS partition); copied my complete MP3-collection (180GB) from one external HD to the other; etc.
All without any kind of glitch or slowdown."
So it seems this person was successful in booting XP from an external drive. Windows 7 or Vista on the other hand will encounter problems booting, which that tread explains.
In another thread (Boot camp on an external hard drive) someone wrote:
"I believe there might be a way, I just haven't gotten around to trying this out.
    1) use disk utility to partition the external drive to ntfs (i think)
    2) attach this disk to a pc and install the OS
    3) install refit onto your mac
    4) attach the drive via fw800, or even better yet esata, to you mac.
    5) Start up your mac
    6) choose the win xp option from the boot menu
    7) install bootcamp drivers
this seems, in theory, that it should work."
So from what I gather, I think this method would probably work, I just want to know if anyone had any specific knowledge regarding this subject.
From here I only have two questions:
Is it possible to take a working drive from a PC which already has XP installed, and change the format to ntfs under OSX without damaging the drive or OS?
And, would I need a version of XP with service pack 2 or 3, or will anything do, since we are not installing it with Bootcamp, we are only running it under Bootcamp at this point.
    Thanks for any help!
