Wrong Drive Letter After Using Restore Command PSE 9

I know this is an old subject, but it has a twist that I can't relate to other posts. So I'm posting a the question again. I have a client who has all of her pictures stored on an external Drive J, lets say. She also has a full backup using the PSE 9 Backup command that she stored a a second external Drive H. Drive J failed. She bought a new external Drive is named N, lets say.
At this point she uses the PSE 9 Restore command, which runs without errors. The problem is that all of her 30,000 images are disconnected. The Organizer thinks they are still on Drive J (her broken drive). and not on Drive N, the new drive.
I have only communicated with her via email and have not seen what exactly she is seeing. However, from what I can tell, she has been using the PSE 9 Backup/Restore command correctly.
I even simulated her process on PSE 9 and it worked fine.
John R. Ellis has published a lot of hints etc regarding problems for PSE 8 and earlier, and they keep coming up as I search.
Does anyone here have any idea what went wrong and obviously more importantly, how to get the PSE Catalog working again?
TIA

You may need to let the software decide on the file structure.
File à Restore
Select Hard Drive/Other Volume and click the adjoining browse button
Navigate to the folder on your external hdd, select the back up (tly) file and click open.
Go to specify Destination <NONE> and click the adjoining browse button.
I recommend you navigate to Pictures or My Pictures
When you see the message “the restore was successful” you will probably see a flashing message (bottom left in Organizer) which says opening catalog.
You will also get a message: The catalog named ……….psa could not be found. Please open or create a different catalog - click OK.
In the catalog dialog click New
If you see a message saying you have chosen the original file structure and new folders may need to be created - click Yes.

After using shift command 4 to send a photo to the desktop, how can I add iphoto to the list of"open with" menu ?

All that's doing is forcing iPhoto to import the image. Dragging it to the iPhoto icon will do the same, or create an automator action and save it as a Contextual menu item.

• Wrong Drive Letter Assignment

This issue caused about 8 hours of grief with trying to get the new iPod to work.
The short of it is, when the iPod is connected, Windows was assigning a drive letter to it that was already in use, Drive F. It also happens that this drive mapping pointed to the Network Share where my music and photo files were. Therefore, iTunes was trying to put the files back to the same place.
No errors were displayed and operations continued along like nothing was wrong. iTunes indicated that all my files were on the iPod but the iPod was bare.
The fix was to go to Manage computer (right mouse click on My Computer, select Manage) then in Disk Management you can reassign drive letters to connected devices. Select the iPod device and give it an unused drive letter. Windows will use that letter in the future when connecting the iPod.
I spent the 8 hours resetting, reinstalling and rebooting everything in sight until I explored using theiPod as an external drive and noticed that it wasn't showing up in My Computer as a mapped drive.
Hopes this hopes helps solve it for someone else.

You've described the issue well, but this is a long-time known issue, documented on the Apple support page (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93499). Windows has a tendancy to forget about Network mapped drives when assigning new physical drive letters.

• Changed drive letter after installation of Creative Suite, cannot open by double clicking file.

Recently my computer died so I had to put my harddrive in another computer. The drive letter was different from my old drive. I didn't notice this at first and re-installed all my software that I wiped for a new Windows install on the partition (including the Creative Suite).
When I tried to open another program that relied on the old install of the drive - it failed. So I changed the letter back to what it was originally as loads of programs installed on that drive relied on it.
Of course when I changed the letter path of the drive all my Adobe Suite related files are no longer associated with the programs. When I try to manually open the file with the program - eg. E:/Program Files(x86)/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop/Photoshop.exe it doesn't set the default program, so every time I have to open photoshop and browse to the file I want to open (ctrl+O).
Any solutions to this without installing the suite again?

I've tried by going through this dialogue here:
When I try to use the .exe to open the .psd it doesn't set it as a choice as if I didn't select it. I can set the default program to open it to notepad, hl2.exe etc. etc. but not the program im after.
P.S. I don't know my login details because they are saved automatically at home. Hence new account.

• Changed Drive Letter Still In Restore Loop

I have an iPod mini (2nd Gen) that is in the restore loop and I have changed the drive letter. I am using Windows XP. I can read and write to the iPod. I have tried it (changing drive letter and restore) on another computer and with iTunes 10 and iTunes 8. Can anyone please help?

ok over 100 people have look at this and on one has an answer to suggest?
Some one must know what is going on.
Does anyone have the files that belong on the hard drive of the mini? I think that is all that is needed for iTunes to recognize the mini.

• Diskpart, drive letter removal using a wildcard

I am trying to write a diskpart script to automatically set a drive letter to "F" the disk is always plugged into the same port, but anytime the computer reboots it assigns a different drive letter, but it never hands out the "F" letter
to any other drives.
The problem is it assigns a different letter each and every time, so I need to use some type of wildcard for the drive letter, the volume number never changes, but unless you know the drive letter you can't change the letter, therefor I can't use a script
to do this when the computer starts up.

I am trying to write a diskpart script to automatically set a drive letter to "F" the disk is always plugged into the same port, but anytime the computer reboots it assigns a different drive letter, but it never hands out the "F" letter to any other drives.
The batch file below uses mountvol.exe to check if disk volume
\\?\Volume{d02e521f-71f1-11e3-be41-00262221fd8d}\
is mounted against a drive letter. If so then it will unmount it. It will then mount this volume on drive letter F:. You must run the file under elevated privileges.
@echo off
set Found=false
set Drive=
set Vol=\\?\Volume{d02e521f-71f1-11e3-be41-00262221fd8d}\
for /F %%a in ('mountvol.exe') do call :Sub %%a
if not "%drive%"=="***" mountvol %Drive% /d
mountvol F: %Vol%
goto :eof
:Sub
if %Found%==true if "%Drive%"=="" (set Drive=%1& goto :eof)
if %1==%Vol% set Found=true
This worked. Thank you for the help.

• Itunes sees IPOD but I cannot get a drive letter to use as a hard drive.

I set disk use enabled but every time I unplug and replug the IPOD back in the check box is unchecked.
What system does windows/IPOD use to mount the IPOD and get a drive letter? I am using a customized version of XP and I want to make sure I did not delete a particular system in XP.

I don't think you'd be able to shut off the Logical Disk Manager service, which is what Windows uses to assign drives letters to mounted volumes. It is possible that it's not loading correctly or automatically, however.
Open up My Computer without the iPod connected and write down all the drive letters you see (for Hard Disk Drives, Devices with Removable Storage, and Network drives, if applicable). Then connect the iPod and double check just to verify there aren't any new drives present. Now right click My Computer and click Manage. In the Computer Management window, click on disk management on the left side. In the upper portion on the right side, look to see if there is a volume that matches your iPod in capacity (will be off by a couple of gigs, likely) but that doesn't have a drive letter. Right click that volume, and hit "Change Drive Letters and Paths" and then attempt to add a drive letter to the device, taking care to note that you are using a drive letter that is not on your list you wrote down earlier. It's usually best to leave some room between the iPod and the last used drive letter... for example, if you have A, C, D, E, and F drives, assign the iPod letter M. Then check to see if the M drive is showing up in My Computer, and right click it and eject it if it is. Then restart the computer.
These steps are a modified version of the steps found here...

• SCCM 2012 - Windows 7 OSD wrong driver letter?

Hi,
I am having issues with SCCM 2012 OSD / MSD 2012 and deploying Windows 7
I am using a captured WIM and I have noticed that on a machine it deploys
to the E: drive even if I have not data on the hard disk (I have cleaned it
with diskpart). So when the task Sequence is finished it the Windows
directory is E:\Windows which is not what I want.
Now what I thought I would try is moving the CD-ROM drive to a different
SATA controller from AHCI port 2 to AHCI Port 3.
Now this made the OS deploy correctly to C: with the final state being C:\Windows
1. So my questions are "How" does SCCM determine what the final logical drive that
windows will be put on?
2. Is there a way I can force it to be C: drive no matter what port my CD-ROM is on?
3. Also if I am using UEFI and Bitlocker is the logic the same?
4. I have noticed when I run diskpart and do list volumes the CD-ROM drive appears?
in the list is this normal?
It seems very bizzare the way it works.
Thanks,
Ward.

Hi,
Thanks for your response actually we are already doing that. :)
Sorry I will re-correct my original post something I did not point out - opps - is we are trying to build these by USB.
It seems that if there is a clean partition and the system boots and happens to choose allocate either the USB key or DVD rom to C: drive then the OS will install on the wrong drive.
So my idea of moving it to another controller seems to make it better but not consistently reliable.
It seems to work if the following conditions are true - need to do a more testing to confirm:
The DVD rom shows up and USB not using the C: so it seems the it will work.
If there is already a partition on the drive called C: and it is already allocated then all seems ok as well
So can I get some more clarity on this - I would like to be able to control it better :)
Thanks,
Ward

• Wrong File Extension after using "Save AS" in PS7 and PSCS

After using 'Save As' the file extension is incorrect (such as filename.psd.jpg) or on opening an image file saved with Save As Photoshop returns the message "Could not complete your request because it is not a valid Photoshop Document".
There's a setting in 'Tweak UI' under the heading 'Common Dialogs' that offers a choice of disabling 'Enable AutoComplete'.
If you disable 'Enable AutoComplete' then Photoshop 7 and 8 (CS) will no longer add the appropriate ending to a file when using 'save as'.
Unfortunately re-enabling this option does NOT appear to cure the problem, and a re-install of the O/S may be necessary.

That would work if I scanned each card one at a time but that would increase my scanning time 9X.

• Wrong Drive Letter in Catalog after new SSD

Had a new SSD installed in windows 7 desktop. It is now the C drive and the old hard drive is F. All the photos are on C as is the catalog (per system information under Help) but the catalog shows the path for all photos to F drive. There are no photos on the F drive. I can open all the photos but cannot add new ones. New scanned photos go to C and elements automatically "finds" them but the new photos screen is just a "?" and Elements cannot bring them into the catalog. I have about 10,000 pictures. Any help wood be appreciated. Thanks

That's how the Organizer works. The drive is not only recognized by the letter, but also by the serial number of the drive. (The reason for that is that removable drives can change letter when plugged in depending on the other peripherals already plugged in). That's why one of the most repeated advice when changing drives or computers is to use the backup/restore method.
Use Backup, Restore to move catalog | Organizer | Elements 6 or later
What can you do now? I assume you don't have the full backup needed for that process.
You can 'reconnect' your files:
Photoshop Elements (PSE) knowledge base.
That's not easy and time consuming, generally.
Or you could copy your picture folders tree back to their original position on drive F (except the newly imported ones). That should reconnect everything.
Once reconnected, delete all those picture files on C.
You can either use the backup and restore method to recreate everything in your C: drive.
Or simply use the organizer to move those files back from F to C.
In the left folders panel, you can drag and drop your folder tree from F to C (be patient for that copy). The files moved from the Organizer won't be diconnected.

• RMAN restore after using catalog command

Hi:
I am on 10.2.0.3; hp-ux B.11.23 ia64.
I need to restore 2 weeks-old RMAN backup into a different database. RMAN runs at 11:00 pm each night.
Here are the steps I've taken:
1. Copied all backuppieces from tape into RMAN backup location where my RMAN process puts them (do I have to copy something else beside pieces?
I do full backup - BACKUP as compressed backupset DATABASE plus archivelog;)
2. Ran "catalog backuppiece" on every backuppiece.
3. Ran list backup to see that this backup from tape has been registered in the catalog and has "AVAILABLE" status.
4. Startup nomount on NEWDB.
5.rman sys/passwd@ORIGINALDB.
6. Ran my duplicate script (below is an extarct):
run {
connect catalog rman/passwd@RECCAT;
connect auxiliary /
set newname for datafile 1 to '/db/data2/NEWDB/system01.dbf';
set newname for datafile 2 to '/db/data2/NEWDB/undotbs01.dbf';
allocate auxiliary channel c1 type disk;
set until time "to_date('28-08-2008 22:30:00','dd-mm-yyyy hh24:mi:ss')";
duplicate target database to NEWDB
logfile
group 1 ('/db/data1/NEWDB/redo01.log','/db/data6/NEWDB/redo01_2.log') size 100M reuse,
Here is the error I am getting:
executing command: SET NEWNAME
executing command: SET NEWNAME
allocated channel: c1
channel c1: sid=333 devtype=DISK
executing command: SET until clause
Starting Duplicate Db at 10-SEP-08
datafile 1 not processed because file is offline
datafile 2 not processed because file is offline
Am I missing something?
Maybe that - my RMAN runs at 11pm so I am trying to set time at 10:30pm?
TIA.

Hi Hemant:
Are you sure that you are connecting to the right instance as your >AUXILIARY ?
normally it would be
connect target /
connect catalog rman/passd@RECCAT
connect auxiliary sys/sys@NEWDBYes I am, RMAN sends a confirmation message: "connected to auxiliary NEWDB (not mounted).
I did this many times with my RMAN backup still online. The question is that now, when I brought 2-weeks old rman backup from tape, duplication does not work although RMAN lists this old backup as available after I cataloged every backup piece...Is this all I need to catalog? I don't think controlfile snapshot matters.
Anyone actually tried that? Bring old backup from tape (I do backupset), catalog it, then duplicate it into a new database? All comments greatly appreciated!

• Permissions will not set, even after using terminal commands?

Hey,
I found a thread on here for using the terminal to type in commands for the user permissions and for the PSIX permissions on Leopard (10.5) server. These commands are supposed to clean the server of all underlying(hidden) permissions that you cant see and then you are supposed to be able to then set the permissions again and finally, to hit "Propagate Permissions" so that all the permissions set for the shared volume then get farmed out to all sub files/folders. This did not work when I tried it in the terminal, it said "Command not found" even after I typed in the admin password. Is there anyone out there who can tell me the actual way to fix the old permissions and get new ones set?
The story is: We had an old server on a G4 when i first took control of the server, I took the shared hard drive out of the G4 and inserted it into a G5 and started using it with the leopard server. the permissions did not really need to be set on that volume because they had carried over from the last time they were shared. But we recently just got a Drobo unit for our server and I recently transferred all the shared files and folders over to the new volume, but ever since I cant get the permissions to farm out to all the stations, it shows me that its done on the server. But when I go to access the files I am able to delete faculty folders where I had set the permissions to "read only" so I am wondering if there is a streamlined way of going about this or if I should just start from scratch and use all brand new HDD's?
Please Help!

• My Dell laptop hard drive crashed after using iCloud photo sharing

Has anyone had PC problems after beginning to use iCloud? I seem to have problems with shared photos on iPhone & PC and with contacts for automobile Bluetooth.

I solved my own question. So for anyone else who has this problem, here's what to do.
1. Plug in your iPhone. Sync it with the computer.
2. Click on your phone in the sidebar and click on your phone's music tab on the top right.
3. Select that you'd like to sync music from this library.
4. Select what you want to sync. Yes, it will delete the current music off of the phone but if you've imported that into your new library, then you'll just put it right back on. Your phone currently thinks it's supposed to sync with the hard drive that doesn't exist, so that's the problem.
5. Press apply, then press sync (lower right).
6. It should sync everything....I hope....That's what it looks like it's doing.
7. Never accidentally unplug your phone during an update again.
8. Hope to whatever god you pray to that your hard drive doesn't crash again.
9. Enjoy your day

• Account locked after using get_wmi commands

Hi
I am writing some scripts using powershell to get information about servers such as cpu's, memeory etc.
I run the scripts from a jump server that has access to most of the servers. I logon to the server using a password that lives for 4 hours. The scripts work great however now my ID is getting locked out constantly so I am thinking that the remote connection
from the jump server used my credentials at that time and something on the remote computer that is still using that expiredID/PW combo. Is there anyway to connect to servers and not leave expired credentials or running sessions that will cause issues like
this.
I read a text file in and loop on several wmi commands like the following
$Computer_info = Get-WmiObject Win32_ComputerSystem -comp $svr

Hello,
You'd need to provide way more information on what you are doing.
Do you logout of the jump server after the script runs?

• Wrong Mail Domain after using Profile Manager

Hi,
we've set up a Lion 10.7.2 Server with Directory Services, Web, Mail and a few other services. The hostname of our system is mail.mydomain.com, the internet hostname ist mail.mydomain.com, it's mail domain setting is of course set to mydomain.com. Now, when setting up a user using Server.app it correctly fills the Email account with [email protected] So far so good.
After logging in as the user on a client, setting the Network account server in Preferences -> Users to "mail.mydomain.com" - which happens to be the Directory Server as well - i go to https://mail.mydomain.com/profilemanager. The Administrator configured a payload in "Settings for everyone" which has been assigned to me containing the correct Mail setup preferences (Mailserver: mail.mydomain.de, CORRECT Mail adress nothing wrong noticable) In the browser, i download and install it on my machine.
Here's the problem:
Now, after opening my Apple Mail (which has been automatically setup up due to the profile) and try sending mail i'll always get the account [email protected] which is clearly not right. I could change the adress by hand in my accounts but i don't want to Could this just be a profile manager or Apple Mail bug? We've triple checked the settings and everything looks ok.

Having the same problem ... setup in profile manager:
protocol: IMAP
email address: [email protected]
incomming mail: mail.company.com
username: [email protected]
on the client:
email address: [email protected]@mail.company.com
Since the outgoing server doesn't need authentication in my network (its an SSL relay), it's pulling the IMAP Email address field for identification rather than than the username, so configuring this from Profile Manager doesn't work.
