Wrong file opens on launch-very strange

Hey I am having a very bizzare problem and I am hoping someone here can help.
The animation in question runs perfectly fine on my computer, but when I emailed it to my colleague, she encountered the following odd behavior:
Clicking the shortcut launches another, seemingly randomly determined, swf file elsewhere on her computer (in a different directory). Deleting this file causes the shortcut in question to redirect to a different, also seemingly random file. If she deletes all of the swf files on her computer besides the one in question, the file refuses to launch, giving a system error saying it doesn't have the right program to open the file, as if she didn't have flashplayer. Then, restoring a deleted swf file from the trash bin resulted in that file being redirected to (and opening), regradless of the directory we placed it in.
I am absolutely confused.
Any ideas what could be going on here?

We just ran into the exact same problem here on a coworker's computer, and were able to resolve it.
When we Control-clicked the .swf in question and looked at the "Open with…" menu, the only application listed was the weird bogus .swf that had kept on popping up. It had been packaged as an application, and she didn't actually have the standalone Flash Player app installed — just the browser plug-in, so her computer kept trying to use this executable .swf to open the file she wanted.
Once we installed the standalone Flash Player app, .swfs opened just fine.
Hope this is helpful to someone out there!

  • SQL Server Management Studio File Open dialog is very slow to change directories

I am running Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio    10.0.2531.0 on Windows 7 Professional.
I have an intermittent problem with the File Open dialog. Sometimes it works reasonably well, but often it takes a very long time (a few minutes) to change directory. While it is doing whatever it is doing, the dialog and all of SSMS becomes unresponsive
    - I can't even cancel the dialog. It sometimes changes the cursor to an hourglass and sometimes not.
I do not have this problem with any other application.
I can open File Open one time and have this delay for every single directory change or if I open the Look In dropdown then, after closing it I can open it again and it will work with normal delays.
It is slow more often than it is normal.
It makes accessing files very impractical.

    Hi,
10.0.2531.0 is SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1 (release April 2009)
No guarantee this will fix your issue, but may be worth testing the latest Service Pack 3 (released October 2011) to see if that helps

  • Corrupt Apps/Disk Images Wrong file creator wont launch

I have a strange problem.  Ive just upgraded to os 10.8 with a clean instal. I was in the process of reinstalling my applications. I keep them on a disk image on a external drive. The drive came unplugged by accident. when I re opened the disk image I got a message that the image could possibly damage my computer do I want to mount it. I did and copied all my installers off it.
Now when I open any of them for example skype, I click on the dmg, the disk image mounts and I can copy the app from it. When I click on the app  to launch it I get the gatekeeper message,  it says it was created by Preview. [see screencap] and when I click open nothing happes.
I can download a new copy of skype and it works. I have limited bandwith with my isp so Id like to avoid redownloading all my installers if possible. Any ideas ?

Thanks.  It starts to launch, gets to the point where you can see the doasboard then errors out.

I think you must have version cue enabled. In the lower left hand
corner of the open menu it says- Use OS Dialog, press that to get
    mac open dialog.
If you don't need version cue, it can be turned off in the application's
perferences or i think in the mac control panel if you have a creative suite
    installed.

  • Launching Microsoft Access from Internet Explorer to view a downloaded MDB file opens the wrong file (not a problem if I use Firefox)

When clicking on a link (in Internet Explorer 9) to download an Access MDB file and then choosing to open the file directly in Microsoft Access (2007) instead of saving it, the file is copied to Temporary Internet Files but Microsoft Access tries to open
a different file and displays an (Unrecognized database format) error.
When I click on the option to open the file, the MDB file is copied to Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5 but instead of that file, Access tries to open a different (incorrect) file located in Temporary Internet Files\Content.MSO (e.g. in the above error
message, NativeView.do is an XML file containing an error message).
I don't see this problem with Word, Excel or PowerPoint files. When opening a Word file (without saving) the Word file is copied to Content.IE5 but an identical .tmp file is created in Content.MSO which when opened in Microsoft Word displayed the required file
correctly. The same happens for Excel files. PowerPoint appears to be handled a little differently (no .tmp file created in Content.MSO but the required file is still copied to Content.IE5) but the PPT file is still opened correctly in Microsoft PowerPoint.
I think the Content-Type "application/msaccess" is fine because Internet Explorer does launch Microsoft Access. It just tries to open the wrong file (or so I think). However, it looks like the file type is not being determined. Here is what I noticed
when trying to open different Microsoft Office files using Internet Explorer:
The last one is the MDB file. As you can see, only for this type of file, the "Type" (Microsoft Office Access 2007?) is not displayed in this Open/Save dialog box.
On Firefox, I don't see this problem. When I tried clicking on the link to the MDB file in Firefox, Microsoft Access was launched and the file was opened correctly. Is there something I can do so the MDB file is opened properly using IE? I can add/change headers
in the HTTP response that writes this file to the output stream (on disk) if that helps.
    Thanks for your time!

Sounds like a problem symptom to be discussed in either an IE forum or an Access forum, not here.  How did you come to post here?  ForumsRedesign.  That might be an on-topic issue for this forum.  <eg>
Can you find your way to either of those other forums easily from here?  Another on-topic question for here I think.   ; )

  • Strange bug in GO-OpenOffice 3.1 regarding file opening of long names

I've noticed a very annoying bug regarding go-openoffice 3.1.0.99.2-1, reproduced by me multiple times. When I try to open some kind of file, regardless of what it is (could be an .ODT or .DOC), and do this by selecting it with File->Open, OpenOffice gives me an error like the one below
As you can see although I've selected the proper file with the proper name, OO is trying to open a file with a name somewhat shortened, i.e. missing letter "T" at the end. The same file opens without any problem when I selected it in Dolphin. Now, what a strange bug! Anyone had similar experience? Any known solutions to this? It seems to happen only when the name of the file is longer than one line in the OO "opening tab" or whatever it's called.

Don't know about vanilla as I don't have it installed at the moment. Maybe someone else can confirm this bug?

  • Very strange.   Wrong AppleID in Find My iPhone

My daughter upgraded from an iPhone 4 to a 5C and really likes it.  But something very strange and perplexing happened with the Find My iPhone app.
The first time she launched this app the AppleID/e-mail was prepopulated with a completely unknown e-mail address.  It appears to be a person's name @gmail.com.  My daughter searched her contacts on the phone, and in her e-mail account and found no record of this e-mail address.
So the question is this.  How can a completely unknown e-mail address be prepopulated in Find My iPhone on a brand new, never used iPhone 5C???
Lacking a clear explaination causes me to wonder about the integrity of what is actually running on her iPhone.  Could the security of her phone be compromised?

I seriously doubt that your brand new phone was used previously.
I bought a brand new iPhone 5s from Verizon last September (arrived factory sealed) and no problems using it.  Today, I needed to recover a photo I accidently deleted from the Camera Roll.  So I did a total reset... erased everything and tried to restore from my last iCloud backup.
During the procedure, I was asked to login to the Apple Store and a unknown email address was already filled out.  There was no way to over-ride it... skip this step was my only option.  So I skipped it and another unknown email address appeared.  Then I skipped it again and my email address appeared.  I logged in and then another unknown email addresses appeared with a password box.  I skipped this step and another final one appeared.  After skipping this one too... it finally proceeded to restore from my last iCloud backup.
After saving my lost photo from the Camera Roll, I plugged into iTunes and restored again from the newer backup saved in my computer.  This restore did not require any Apple Store authentications so there was no problems...
HOWEVER, after restoration, the next time my phone asked me to login to the Apple Store, it was prepopulated with one of those bogus email addresses from before!  This time I simply deleted it and entered my login info... everything seems fine now.
Based on how mine went down... I am fairly certain this problem has nothing to do with the user or the phone.  It sure seems like something is very wrong within Apple's Cloud servers and how it authenticates the restore.
My latest issue is that the phone is correctly reporting my last iCloud backup from last night, but iTunes is telling me the phone has "never been backed up to iCloud."  This is crazy...  I'll be visiting the Apple Store soon to try and find out more.

  • I have an old mpg video file, taken with a very early model "smart phone", that opens and plays fine in my newly "rebuilt" iPhoto library. I cannot open, edit it or share it with any other software. How can I fix it, to be able to do anything with it?

I have an old mpg video file, taken with a very early model "smart phone", that opens and plays fine in my newly "rebuilt" iPhoto library. I cannot open, edit it or share it with any other software. How can I fix it, to be able to do anything with it?
    Detail:
I've recently purchaced a 4TB Thunderbolt drive to store my "vast" music and photo libraries. iPhoto had an issue reading the moved library, so I bought and used iPhoto Library Manager to "rebuild" it. Apart from much of the original data such as date taken & camera used etc, it appears to be working well. The aforementioned mpg video was taken some 9 years ago, using an early model "iMate" smart phone, and opens and plays fine on iPhoto, but I cannot open it with anything else, (I've tried iMovie, VLC players, Wondershare and Handbrake) nor can I share it. I just want to edit it, and share it with family.
    Any help would be appreciated...

No - not iMovie, VLC, Wondershare or Handbrake... Quick time starts with a "CONVERTING", then I get
I've looked at the "tell me more" links, tried downloading some of the movie players there. I'm begining to think the file is corrupt.
Thanks for getting back to me again though - appreciate it...

  • Open & Save on many applications dialouges acting very strange lately!

This is a weird situation to explain because it is so odd to me, and I've never seen anything like it.
On applications like Mail, Photoshop, Text Edit, and other programs (both Apple and non-Apple) have been giving me very odd behaviors when saving and opening files while scrolling through directories to find the correct directory to save in/open from.
It's difficult to explain this behavior without a video tutorial but I will give it a shot. I will walk you through it. I am in Photoshop now. I have a file open and I want to save it for web. I hit AppleShiftS and the menu pops up. I hit Save. The dialougue comes up. I am currently in the viewing in detailed view (the button on the left where you choose which way to view your dialogue, the one with the horizontal lines going across). Now first of all, none of the dialogues on my computer lately ever "remember" where I saved last. You know how when you save into a certain directory often, when you save again, it should remember so you don't have to click on eighteen folders to get back to where you were? Well, this doesn't happen anymore for me. ANYWAY, so I click on my external drive. On the right, the contents of the root directory of my external pop-up. Here is where it gets weird. I double-click on BLACK SEA (a folder for my design company, that is called Black Sea) to open it. Instead of taking me to that directory, it basically displays every folder inside BLACK SEA underneath it. Now, keep in mind, there are no arrows next to the folders. It isn't collapsing/expanding the folder like it does when arrows or plus signs are next to folders. It just displays the contents underneath, with no indentation. So, I keep clicking on folders to get to the specific folder I want to save in (this means double-clicking about 5 more times, to get to the desired folder). As I am doing this, that thing I explained is happening, and sometimes, when I double-click, it doesn't open the folder. It just freezes and doesn't respond. Either that, or it will open it, but display the contents of the folder it belongs in, instead of the contents of the folder I'm clicking on.
Okay, you're probably really confused now, aren't you? I don't blame you.. it's hard to explain what is happening. Basically, to sum it up, my open/save dialogues are acting fishy and not acting the way they should. I'm pretty computer literate, I am a pro graphic designer and web designer so I know what I am doing. I have tried restarting and repairing permissions. I think I may have to run first aid? What do you all think? Ever had similar experiences?
And before you blame it on photoshop... remember, it does this in mail when choosing attachments, or in Text Edit when saving or opening files, and other programs like Cyberduck (FTP) and my HP Scanner Utility when saving what I scanned.
A few key things to remember that the Finder application does NOT do this (and for that I am THANKFUL because since I can't for the life of me save a file where I want it saved, I end up saving it as close to where I can get it, then go into Finder and drag it to it's proper folder since I can't accurately save in these programs I'm having trouble with).
Also, in the other viewing option (the button next to the one with the horizontal lines in the saving/opening dialogue), this works properly. This is the method I have to use in order to save, because it behaves as it should (expanding/collapsing folders in the window to the right of the folder I am clicking on). But personally, I hate this view, and would rather use the other one.
Please let me know if you have any other questions. I am sure you do because I wrote a novel and I know it is confusing but I did my best.

My goodness, you certainly gave a detailed description!!!!!!!!!
Have you tried using your system restore disk to check for errors on the internal drive using Disk Utility. (Not the Disk Utility in your Applications folder). If not, shut down your Mac. All at the same time, press the Power Button, hold down the C key and insert your system restore disk, probably number 1. Keep holding down the C key until you see the Apple logo on the screen, then let go.
At this point, go to the Menu and click Utilities/Disk Utility. When DU opens, select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, make sure First Aid is selected then click Verify. If DU reports errors, click Repair. After that's finished, Quit Disk Utility from the Menu, then click Utilities in the Menu again and then click Startup Manager. When that window opens, select MacintoshHD and click Restart. That will boot you back up from your internal drive. See if you see a difference.
If that doesn't help, I see you are running 10.4.8. You are two updates behind. Run Software Update from the Apple Menu. After you run the update, run Disk Utility (from your Applications/Utility folder) and Repair Disk Permissions. (Always do that after a software update) Reboot and see if that helped.

  • Files transferred to external HD end up in trash - very strange issue

    Hi,
I seem to be having a very strange issue, hopefully somebody can help or has seen this before.
Hardware: MacBook Air, Western Digital Passport external HD, 250gb, formatted NTFS.
Software: OSX 10.7 Lion, Paragon (allows me to write to an NTFS formatted HD)
Issue Summary: I copy something to the external HD; I empty trash; the file I copied is deleted from the external HD. It doesn't happen every time.
I do also seem to have a persistent folder in trash called "WD Sync Data" that won't go away unless I re-delete it as it's also in the root of the drive. Not sure if this is related somehow.
Recently I copied 3 video files inside a folder to the HD, then disconnected the HD. When I reconnected it a while later and noticed that inside the "WD Sync Data" folder in trash were the 3 files I'd copied. I then looked inside the same folder on the root of the drive and the files were there, instead of inside the folder that I'd copied to the drive, which had vanished. If I hadn't noticed and had emptied the trash, those files would've been deleted.
It's definitely happened more than once; last time I actually deleted the files from my computer after copying, then emptied trash, and they were gone from the external HD also.
I've only found one person who seemed to be experiencing a similar problem back in 2010. It sounds similar though it could've been user error: http://www.mac-forums.com/forums/apple-notebooks/188224-weird-external-hard-driv e-trash-problem-help-please.html
Has anyone experienced this or have any suggestions?

Quick update: I ran a verify then a repair in Disk Utility as there were a couple of errors. Hopefully this has solved the issue, however it'd still be interesting to know if anyone's come across this before and what caused it?

  • Can't delete folder (or files in it) - VERY strange issue

ok i know there's been tons of questions about how to delete/force delete a troublesome file or folder. believe me, i searched, i've tried them all, and still, i couldn't solve it.
    here's my problem:
    a) 4 files, in a folder called "as".
    - 06Jacksons Club "Sunspot".mp3
    - 11_Novelette Conclusion" excerpt_Lisa edit.mp3
    - 16_Green Tea At Denny_s _Mary P. _Aka High Places Singer, Bassoonist, Zine-Maker, BOO - The "P" Is For Pearson_].mp3
    - 20_"Arrival In Benaras__ From Merchant-Ivory_s Film __The Guru__.mp3
    b) things i tried so far, and what happened:
    - using the terminal with sudo/rm. answers for a file: "No such file or directory".
    - using the terminal with rm/sudo to delete the whole folder:
rm: /Volumes/Untitled/as/: is a directory ... is the answer i get, and it stays there, doesnt move
    c) if i move it into trash, when i try emptying it, everything goes except for that folder and it's files inside, neither does force deleting it via the terminal make it disappear. the "crushing" noise is audible, but nothing happens. no errors or anything, it just stays there.
    d) if i click on one of the files, they disappear (!!!). if i play around in finder and come back to that folder later, they're there again. the folder itself can be normally copied, renamed, moved around on the harddisk and everything. if i duplicate the folder, the dublicate is empty, unlike the original folder.
    e) NO music player or anything else ever used those files.
    f) they are 0 bytes each.
    g) another note: the files and the folder are on an ext. harddrive. the harddrive is not faulty.
    h) i even tried deleting them from a windows computer, which keeps saying the filenames are too long or invalid, and it wont work either.
    i) the folder or the files are not locked, i have full read/write permission, i tried reinstalling several times, i also tried it from safe mode.
    j) formatting the harddisk is NOT an option.
i would be very helpful if anyone could help me with this very annoying issue. i just want to see my trashcan empty for once.
    thanks very very much!

Try booting to Safe Mode (hold down the shift key while booting, restart may take a long time but let it go), sometimes just doing that works. Restart normally.

    Mike,
Any document left open when you Quit the application reopens when you restart the application. Rather like the jacket that I neglected to hang up when I came home last night. It's still lying on the chair by the door.
