Wrong file size on Linux download page

Hello:
This is what the Linux Oracle 9iR2 server download page looks like:
Oracle9i Database Release 2 Enterprise/Standard Edition for Intel Linux <http://otn.oracle.com/images/white_spacer.gif> Download the Complete Files <http://otn.oracle.com/images/bullets_and_symbols/red_arrow_bullet_35.gif> lnx_920_disk1.cpio.gz (553,607,967 bytes) <--- WRONG!! <http://otn.oracle.com/images/bullets_and_symbols/red_arrow_bullet_35.gif> lnx_920_disk2.cpio.gz (588,817,480 bytes) <http://otn.oracle.com/images/bullets_and_symbols/red_arrow_bullet_35.gif> lnx_920_disk3.cpio.gz (442,135,815 bytes)
The problem has to do with the first file (lnx_920_disk1.cpio.gz).
The stated size (553,607,967 bytes) is WRONG.
I have downloaded those 3 files more than a dozen times, getting
files of varying sizes. After several weeks, I finally had 3 files
with consistent sizes. However, the file #1 produces an error
message from gunzip (unexpected end of file).
If Oracle Corporation claims to be a technology- and Internet-savvy
company, they should know that the best way to avoid problems like
the above is:
- offering an FTP (i.e. TCP-based) download option
- including the corresponding MD5SUM next to each file.
Everybody else (well, probably not Microsoft) is doing this.
Why not Oracle?
Thanks from a very frustrated sysadmin.

Hey mister Millaard,
I have problem because Premiere always use Mainconcept DV Pro codec when import file in my case. But I find solution:
From
C/Program Files/Adobe/Adobe Premiere Pro CS3/Plug-ins/en_US
I remove
ImporterMCDVCPRO file and now Premiere import avi files as MS-DV AVI.
Maybe this can help somebody else.

How can I convert my Open Source document files into Word document files? I cannot download Pages since my Macbook Air does not have the most recent software. I downloaded open office to my mac to try and save money. It worked well for a while. Now I get this pop-up message that asks me to "Reopen" and when I select the option, nothing happens. I cannot save my documents anymore and I cannot convert them to word. Help!

You have 17 options to save as in Open Office, one of which is .doc  files,  yes it needs to be saved manually.
You may be able to default to DOC, but have not tried same.
Since Open Office is 99% same as Word, I use it, or Word, either one.  Open Office is a bit less buggy than Word 11'

  • Why is image file size getting inflated by Pages?

I have a newsletter I am creating, and I have inserted 6 photos. They have been pre-downsized using Image Ready, so each image is around 30k. But after they have been inserted, the file size of the entire Pages document is huge. So I opened the Package for the document (Control click on the icon) and I see that now the images are each around 300k. The images have not been manipulated in Pages, no shadows or strokes. They have been resized just a teeny bit (made smaller in all cases).
So what is going on to cause this huge inflation of file size. It is making my document too big to email (although it has helped to control the pdf export to "Good"... or even better to use the Color Sync file size reduction dialog, which is buried so deep in the Print dialog that I can't believe this is a common way to do it...)
Anyway, all help would be appreciated. Thanks, Peter

yes, you are right that the best results that I got were from the Print command and the color sync option to reduce file size. Without that, I took a Pages doc that was around 2.7megs and the pdf varied from 1.8-2.5 using the export command. With the color sync method I did get it down to a 450k pdf, which I am satisfied with.
Still it baffles me that a 40k jpeg will inflate to 300k in Pages. I don't see multiple copies in the Package for the document, so I don't think it is multiplying. And I think that at least one of the images lives in the document without having been resized from within Pages, so that doesn't seem to be involved.
I am using jpegs, adjusting them in Photoshop and then optimizing them with Image Ready, but they are JPEGs all thru the process, and they clearly are averaging around 35-40k after Image Ready does it's t hing. That is the whole purpose of Image Ready, it comes with Photoshop with that intention solely. I could try saving the image file in Preview or some other program and seeing if it inflates liek the Image REady jpegs do.
Anyway, I am still curiouis about why this happens, but I can live with the rather bizarre method of using the Print>Color Sych method.
Thanks to all of you for your help, really,
    Peter

  • Linux Download Page appears broken.

    Hi.
I've been attempting to download Skype for Linux.
I can get to the download page with no problem.
I'm presented with a list of Linux distributions, from a pop down list.
This is as far as things go.  No download commences, and there is no download button.
I've tried 5 different Internet browsers so far, and I have the same response from them all.  The Linux download page is behaving like a facade with nothing behind it.
    Any ideas?
    Solved!

I've got the same problem here, so have many others.  There are no network restrictions my end, no proxy in use.  The download page only allows selection from a drop-down but performs no action after selection.  The site code is broken.
Also Ubuntu 12.04 is the latest version offered?  That's 2 years old.  the latest LTS (Long Term Service) release of Ubuntu is 14.04
Ditto that. And, as usual, no one from the skype itself is listening.

  • HT1222 how do i determine the file size of each download before i download it?

How do i determine the file size of a down load before i download it?

  • Trying to reduce file size of my opening page in a flash site

I'm using the Flash CS4 IDE, and the first page of my site takes a lot longer to load than I want it to.  So I wanted to go through the varied images / symbols / movie clips / sounds and so on to see where all the memory is being chewed up.
When I go into my library, however, I can see the Name, LInkage, usecound and Type of my elements, but no mention of file size and I can't seem to find any right click menu that lets me add file size to the list of details being displayed.
Is there a way to make it show file size?  Or some workaround?
And are there any best practices to reduce file size aside from using symbols for anything that's used more than once and reducing image and sound quality?
    Thanks

I was actually using the term pretty loosely.  I'm building a Gaia site which works by loading an Index page, then a Nav (navigation) page on top of that, and then lets you load and unload pages as necessary on top of those.
Since the Nav page never gets unloaded it's a good place to park certain content.  So it's actually my Nav page that's gotten too bloated.  And the coding is handled through a separate Nav.as file (so it's not the first frame of my nav.swf, it's all the varied movie clips I had to incorporate into my Nav.fla
I'm just looking for a way to identify which MovieClips &  sound files (only have a couple of short ones) and other assets are taking up the most memory so I can see if I can cut those down.
Also, do unused symbols use up memory or is it only the assets you actually end up adding that count toward file size?
    Thanks

  • Different File Sizes on Linux Samba - depending if bound to AD or not

The Macs are running 10.5.7 and are bound to a 2003 Active Directory. We connect to a Redhat Linux Samba file server. The authentication is handled by AD. The issue is that all the file sizes show up too large. Anything less than a 1MB is shown as 1MB or more; ie 140KB is 1MB.
The OS X Servers (also bound to AD) running both AFP and SMB show the file sizes correctly.
IF I unbind the Mac from AD and connect (authentication still handled by AD) the file sizes show up correctly. ie 140KB IS 140 KB.
    Any ideas or suggestions?

Follow up: Everything shows up correctly on the WIndows Servers via SMB.

  • Need to get large file sizes down to downloadable sizes-how?

I am using Compressor 4 and have several professional videos I produced with Final Cut Studio in QuickTime/.MOV format using ProRes 442. They are all 720p and of course, all have large file sizes. I needed to convert them so they are compatible with iTunes as well as Apple devices (AppleTV, iPad/iPod/iPhone, etc). They also need to be downloadable in a reasonable time and I of course want to maintain a quality image. Several of the videos are about an hour long, some a little more.
I an unable to get most of these files to be small enough for practical download and still maintain an acceptable quality. For example:
I have one video (QuickTime rendered from FCPS) that runs 54 minutes. 1280x720, ProRess 422, Linear PCM with a Bit rate of 72.662. The best I seem to be able to get out of compressor is to use the setting options for "HD for Apple Devices (5 Mbs)" which gives me a file that's just over 2Gb. Not bad, and the quality is still very good, but the file size is just too big for people to download. I get reports of people getting estimates of 77 hours to download this one file.
I did try using the setting under Video Sharing Services / Large 540p Video Sharing just to see what it would give me, but it really wasn't that much smaller and the quality was noticeably degraded.
I'm confused as to what to do about this. I have downloaded things from iTunes before that are good quality, about an hour and their file sizes are simply bnot this big.
Can anyone give me some advice? Thank you. Grateful for anything you can offer.
    MC

If you're not concerned with precise average bitrate, use h.264 codec, set bitrate to "automatic" and use the quality slider. Be sure to have "keyframes" on "automatic"; every 24 frames or so makes h.264 quite inefficient and is only useful for live-streaming, where you want people to be able to resynchronise as quickly as possible. Having multi-pass enabled might help, but I'm not sure what it does when using constant-quality encoding.
Do a test-encoding of a representative clip of maybe about rwo minutes or so, play with the quality slider and see how far down you can go and still be satisfied with the quality. Using "automatic" bitrate uses as many bits to encode each frame as is necessary to get the required quality, and file sizes will vary depending on the type of material. Complex textures and high motion will use more bits, still frames and slow pans will use very little.
A light chroma-channel denoising may help improve perceived quality, as may very light sharpening in case you scaled down the material.
If you're still not happy with the bitrate vs. quality tradeoff, try reducing the resolution, but generally you should get 720p down to around 2.5 to 3.0 Mbps with adequate quality.
On the other hand, If someone needs 77 hours to download 2 GB, they have another problem anyway. That sounds like a 56k modem connection. What's he doing trying to download HD content anyway?

  • Wrong file size in Encore?

    Hi,
    can anyone help?
I encode a file into mpeg2-DVD fith file size approx. 4GB. When I import this file into Encore CS4, the program shows that this file will NOT fit into DVD-5. It shows about 8GB file size. Why?
If I import the same file to Encore CS3, everything is OK. In both programs I have the same settings.
    Any idea? THANKS!
    Radovan

1-check to be sure you have not added anything to the ROM content section
2-does Encore say the file needs to be re-transcoded?
3-have you maybe added the file to the project twice?
    4-related to #3, copy-paste a picture of your flowchart

  • Lightroom 5 exporting wrong file sizes?

I am having trouble with Lightroom 5 exporting images at incorrect file sizes. For example, if I use my export preset for images with long edge 2500 pixels and maximum size 1000k it is exporting images at 1500-2500k.
Is anyone else experiencing this? I am wondering if it is a bug.
    Thanks

I never had a problem with it in LR4. The example I gave was one of many options I tried. At the other end I asked it to produce smaller files (eg 1500pixels long edge) with a 1000k maximum and I could only get them to output at around 160k.
I have since realised that I neglected to mention that I was using LR/Mogrify2 plug in to add a text graphic to the images. I experimented with turning that option off and I was able to produce a 2500px long edge file at 996k. As soon as I turn that option on again the file ouptuts at 1600k (where I have specified at 1000k limit).
This was never a problem with LR4 so there is a conflict or a bug somewhere.
Is anyone else using a LR / Mogrify 2 plug in and experiencing unpredictable results? I have the option to use LR / Mogrify 2's version of ImageMagick checked.
    Message was edited by: Shipp
So I just did further testing. It seems that LR5 cannot control the maximum file size when working with Lr / Mogrify 2. If I ask the plug in to resize the image and control the maximum file size I can produce a file with long edge 2500pix, 1000k maximum size and the text graphic with no problem at all, as I used to be able to do with LR4. I will contact the plug in developer and see if they are aware of this.

  • "Get Info" displaying wrong file size

Hey Guys take a look at the image to see my issue
get info shows two different file sizes but then when i send the file or upload it to a server it shows the real file size
    anyone see this before?

    Hiya.
When I attach the image to an new empty email, before I send it I do not see any "Image Size popup at the bottom right corner of the window." The only size info I can see is the "Message Size" on the bottom left hand side. On the bottom right hand side there is Image Size with a drop down menu where you can choose to view the image either by "Actual Size"(default), Small, Medium or Large.
I am only able to see the attachment size info above the image after I have sent it when I go into Sent Messages or after I have sent it to myself I can see it in the received message.
Can you tell me where to hover the cursor to get this "Image Size popup"?
I am using Mail - Version 4.2 to send the message.
    Thanks again Thomas.

  • File size changes when extract page saved

I receive PDF files with multiple pages that I have to separate.  I use Adobe Acrobat 7.  I open the large file, extract a page and delete it from the larger file, then save the single page with a different name.  I work my way through the large file until all pages are separated.  I have been doing this successfully for a long time.   Today, I received a 870kb file with 24 pages.  Usually the individual pages are around 50kb.  Today, each extracted file was around 300kb.  This made each of the 24 pages well over 10mb when the origial single file was only 870!  This just started happening suddenly.  I have made no changes to settings from the last time I extracted pages this way.   Can anyone help?  This is a huge mystery and needless to say, a huge handicap!  Thanks!

Thanks much for your reply.  It said that "images" was 55.61% and "X object forms" was 41.10%.  The rest were less than 2% each.  Other PDFs I work with are created by a designer the same way as the ones I had problems with.  For some reason, my Adobe is treating some of them differently when I extract pages.  A single file that was 870kb and 24 pages wound up being about 10mb-worth of 24 individual pages.   Any ideas?  Thanks again!
