Wrong Formating in Word Processing Software

Hey,
Ok here's a problem that has been driving me insane. When i type a document on my macbook, the formating does not appear correctly.
I have used neo office, pages, and word 2008 for mac. This problem seems to be present in all of the software.
any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

The fonts dont register as the correct size. Eventhough the formating says they are 12 point, they are displayed and they print as 8 pt. Further, the page margins are off. If i want a one inch margin around my page, I have to set the print margins at .75 inches.
Thanks for any advice that you can offer up

  • Word processing software:  Appleworks, NeoOffice / saving as Word.doc

I would love some advice on word processing software.
My daughter is a college student who sometimes needs to e-mail her papers to a teacher (in Word). She does not have Word, and we're not buying it. In the past, she's used the school computers, but that's not always practical. She has a Mac, with Appleworks on it. If she works in Appleworks and saves a paper in Word format, will it really open okay in Word, with footnotes, images, etc. intact? (Obviously, she doesn't want to get a lower grade for something so silly and avoidable.) I think I have seen on this forum somewhere a mention of trouble with footworks in Appleworks docs saved in Word format.
Also, if she were to save as a Word doc, which format would be the best to use: Word Mac 6; Word Mac 98; Word Windows 6; Word Windows 97, 2000, XP 2002?
She also needs to do simple tables sometimes, which it looks like Appleworks can do. Do these translate well?
Also, I have looked at NeoOffice and OpenOffice online. It looks like one of those would be a possibility for her, too. Apparently, documents can be saved as Word files in those programs. Does anyone know if they are any better than Appleworks for this purpose? (For instance, with footnotes?)
From the NeoOffice Website: "You can exchange documents with Microsoft Office and OpenOffice.org users, even on other platforms!" Does that mean a Word file will open and display okay, if you get one e-mailed to you? And that your own Word file will open and display okay on the other end? (I know this is not about Appleworks, but someone might know. . .)
Looking through this forum, I have seen software for opening Word documents (icWord), but my daughter needs to be able to (reliably) go both ways--saving and opening.
    Thanks much in advance!

    Overall, I'd concur with Ken.
AppleWorks/Word conversion does have difficulties with tables and footnotes.
Neo Office has better compatibility with MS Office, and runs without installing additional software on your Mac. But it's a Java implementation of an earlier version of OpenOffice.org, and is missing a few recent improvements. It's also a bit slow, although in some uses this is not a problem.
OpenOffice.org runs in an Xwindow (no relation to MS Windows), and requires installation of X11, Apple's Xwindow implementation. I haven't used it, but expect that it is a more compatible implementation than NeoOffice.
Both are free to download and use. If nothing else, one or the other is useful to see how successful the AppleWorks > Word translation of a particular file has been.
The closest compatibility will be achieved with MS Windows (Mac), of course. If your reasons for not purchasing MS Windows are strictly economic, you mmight want to rethink them. As a student, your daughter is elegible to purchase the Teacher and Student edition at a much lower price than the retail version. This version is operationally identical to the retail one. The largest difference is a licencing one—student/teacher licencees are not eligible for reduced price upgrades to the next version. They are, though, eligible to purchase the next Student & Teacher edition provided they still qualify at that time.

  • Word Processing Software for brand new MacBook Pro

Is it possible that my new MacBook Pro doesn't come with any word processing software? I never thought to ask about this before making my purchase.  I'm new to Apple--just came over from the PC darkside--and would love some help on this.  Thanks!

Ronda mentions TextEdit and whilst it is not as sophisticated as some high end word processing software, it does have more ability than a lot of people realize. Most people have not taken the time to explore it.
Peruse some of its features in the following link. It may be enough to suit your needs.

  • HT5071 Can I create a book using the IBooks Author word processing software, save it as a PDF, then have it professionally printed by an offset press to sale in brick and mortar stores? If so, is this procedure free me from any IBooks restrictions?

It's your content, under your control.
If you output as an .ibooks file, and you want to sell it, the store is the only outlet, otherwise, you can do as you wish.

  • Word Processing Software for iMac OS X-5

I have an iMac OS x-5 - Leopard installed. What is the best Word Processing software for this older machine?  I need to create text boxes, I need to place columns within pages and I need to be able to re-size graphics within pages. Anything on the market is for newer machines. Any books or web sites to suggest where I might get advise. Any help is appreciated. I cannot upgrade at this time. Thanks.

    Check out these freeware apps.
    NeoOffice http://download.neooffice.org/neojava/en/index.php
    AbiWord http://www.abiword.com/
NeoOffice is equivalent to Microsoft Office. It can open Excel files, Word files & PowerPoint files. You can also create these types of files that can be opened by PC users. AbiWord is just a wordprocessor.

  • How can I load word processing software onto my Apple Mac?

    Hi
Is it possible to install word processing software on a new Apple Mac? I've found something called 'Pages' but I can't work out how to buy it or install it.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
There are different word processing apps you can use in your Mac:
Microsoft Word for Mac. Included in Office for Mac, it provides full compatibility with Microsoft Office for Windows and it's probably the app with more features > http://www.microsoft.com/mac
Apple Pages. You can buy it on the Mac App Store, but you can download it for free if you have got a new Mac (open the App Store and go to Purchases). It has got a new interface, but some users have complained about its lack of features. As it's free, you can give it a try.
LibreOffice. Free and open-source, one of the most recommended applications > http://www.libreoffice.org

  • Question on word processing software Preinstalled on MacBook Air.

Does the word processing program pre installed on the newest gen MacBook product line allow you to open, save, and compose your documents in Word?  I thought it does but saw this at Amazon:  http://www.amazon.com/Office-Mac-Home-Student-2011/dp/B003YCOJA8/ref=sr_1_1?s=so ftware&ie=UTF8&qid=1343322115&sr=1-1&keywords=microsoft+word+for+mac
Why would you need that if you can save your files in Word format and read Word docs right from the start?

The app TextEdit which comes preinstalled can open and save Word format.  But it is no substitute for Word or a Word clone like OpenOffice.

  • Word Processing Software

What word processing programs are available for the MacBook with OS X 10.6.8?  Is there something like Pages?  How can this be purchased, downloaded and installed?

Read this post. Pages works best on Macs. There always seems to be issues with Microsoft's Office for Mac at times so if you don't need that particular program....pass.

  • Difference between layout format and word processing format

I have read the manual, help, discussions and am stumped. I look in the manual for a particular action and it won't work. Is this because I am in the wrong format?

Don't know what I would do without your help. You have hit one of the problems I was having. Let me summarize what I think you said:
All breaks are available in WP
The only break in layout is column when we are in a text block
Could you clarify " We may also add floating or embedded blocks of different nature." (WP) What is a floating or embedded block? Blocks that you create yourself, like adding a text block;then move around?
"We must put every components in blocks floating on the blank background" (layout)-I assume you mean the blocks that are shown when I select " show layout"
This has been very helpful. Is there a way to determine all or most differences instead of asking you about each and every problem or at least a general guide
It would appear that WP has more inherent flexibility than layout, but layout has a lot of the work done for us. My immediate goal is to produce a newsletter with graphics to be used as a hardcopy and in a email form.
    Thanks!

  • Good word processing software with unicode font support?

If this is the wrong place, apols and please redirect me.
I stopped using MS Word v.x (2001) as it doesn't support Unicode fonts, which I absolutely need. I assume the latest Word/Office for Mac supports Unicode fonts (?), but it's too expensive, and also I always found that Word crashed a lot and I don't want to support Microsoft.
I've been using the cheap Mellel for several months. I applaud its producers, but it's far too lacking in features (e.g. no alphabetical sorting) and even after months of use is very counter-intuitive.
Can anyone recommend a good all-round word processor for Leopard on a Macbook Pro which is stable, supports unicode fonts, doesn't break the bank, and has comparable features to MS Word but preferably isn't MS Word?

Of all the word processors you are likely to come across, I think only Word X and AppleWorks, both essentially obsolete, do not support Unicode. Here is a list with summary info on each app that may be helpful:

  • Word processing on iPad

I wonder if you can adequately do some word processing on an iPad. If so, how? I did not find anywhere saying that you can download Mellel or Nisus Writer Pro (to me the two most important, the most reliable, the best word processing softwares for Mac) on an iPad. I hear that Pages can be downloaded on an iPad but is it really adequate? And how much is the cost for having a Pages software/application on your iPad? On a normal computer, I feel Pages still lags behind Mellel and Nisus Writer Pro. I also wonder if there is a TextEdit application for iPad! I am thinking of buying an iPad for light uses while in school as I have an iMac at home. Writing on a good word processor is a crucial thing for me. So any thoughts on this would be most appreciated. Ideally I would want the word processing application on the iPad to be easily compatible with those I have on my Apple computers: namely, TextEdit, Mellel, and Nisus Writer Pro.

I did not find anywhere saying that you can download Mellel or Nisus Writer Pro (to me the two most important, the most reliable, the best word processing softwares for Mac) on an iPad.
The iPad is a closed system, you can only download what is in the app store, and neither Mellel or Nisus or MS have made versions of their word processor that could be put in that store.
how much is the cost for having a Pages software/application on your iPad?
$9.99 It is not the full version of Pages, as you might expect.
I also wonder if there is a TextEdit application for iPad!
    No.

How compatible it would be depends on what you need to write. To me it sounds like you might well not be satisfied. See this info on Pages:

  • Default word processing program

I installed Parallels Desktop + Windows Vista + Microsoft Office for Windows. I inadvertently selected Word for Windows as my default word processing software, requiring the virtual machine to start up, etc. How might I get back to Word for Mac as my default?

  • No word  processing on Tiger??

I just bought my daughter a new MacBook and it came with 10.4 and iLife. She has been unable to find any word processing software on it, except for the 30 day trial of MS Office.
I guess I haven't kept up with the version but when I got my last iBook it had Appleworks on it. Do they really not have a word processing app included on a machine they tout for students? It's great she make a movie, record her own podcast and share her pictures online, but I'd like her to be able to type a paper for $1400.

Although it's arguable that "you don't sell the steak - you sell the sizzle"... and in today's market word processing isn't sizzle - I have to sympathize [somewhat] with the hardware mfrs.
Word processing requirements span a very wide spectrum. As several others have pointed out, Text Edit is there & it ain't half bad, although it doesn't have the features of a "professional" word processor. However, most people don't need a professional word processor so if one were included those people would complain that they were being forced to pay for something they didn't want and for which they had no use. Further, those who do need higher caliber capability have their individual requirements & wouldn't want to be forced to use what Apple picked for them. IOW, by supplying anything other than software that provides basic capabilities, Apple would alienate even more people;)
You should also find that the MacBook came with 30-day trials of iWork & MS Office so you/she can evaluate which would be most suitable for her needs and there are other options out there - some of which are free.
Quite honestly - IMHO - the quantity, variety & quality of software that does come with a Mac really constitutes a pretty good value.

  • How to Scan a Paper Doc & Convert It with OCR to a Word Processing Format

In an effort to save others with a similar need some time, I am posting a simple method of using he iPhone to scan a document and convert it, using optical character resolution, to an editable word processing format, usable on computers or iPhones and Android smartphones - all with free apps.  I found no free one-stop-shopping apps that did the job themselves.
To begin, use the DocScan app to scan the paper document. this results in an Acrobat file (pdf).  If the document is already in pdf form, move on to the next step.
Next, upload the pdf file to your Google Drive workspace, which automatically puts it through an OCR conversion, Google Drive automatically recognizes the text within pdf files uploaded from iPhones.
Then open the file within Google Drive, select Open In and choose the Able2Extract app.
Select the pdf file in Able2Extract and convert it to an MS Word (docx) file, which can be opened by Pages, Word or other word processing programs.  It can also be converted to a spreadsheet or presentation MS Office format.
Finally, transfer the new docx file to the Documents app, the Dropbox app or another storage app, from which a word processing program can access it for editing.
Many apps, including Able2Extract, convert all types of files into pdf format when going the reverse direction.

    Good day Larry,
Are you referring to CreatePDF's ability to export existing PDF files to Word?  I want to confirm as Adobe CreatePDF doesn't have any sort of interface with scanners.
Let me know a bit more about how you're creating your PDF files and then how you're using the CreatePDF service and I may be able to answer your question (or at least try!)
    Kind regards,
    David
