Wrong Host, Listener and Orahome in EM
Hi, i have built a DB on an new Oracle server using a DB-template created on the formerl server, which is no more in use.
When I starting the EM for this DB, i get wromng listener, host and orahome. But the best of all is, that the wrong data are not the data of the former serve which I have shut down todayr, but from the former-former-server which was in duty till 2005?!
Please, from where the EM reads the data for the host, listener and orahome?
It read from targets.xml , check the targets.cml

Sshd ignores /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny
Hello everyone,
I've just found out that sshd ignores /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny completely on my machine. It doesn't make use of tcp_wrappers. I am using the standard Arch package. Either my settings are wrong, or this is a severe security problem. It was a terrible surprise to find out that my server is under severe dictionary attacks all the time, despite the denyhosts script I am using.
These are my settings:
/etc/hosts.deny:
ALL: ALL
/etc/hosts.allow:
# some nfs daemons: 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0
sshd sshd1 sshd2: ALL EXCEPT /etc/hosts.evil
mysqld: 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0
/etc/hosts.evil:
195.113.21.131
60.10.6.53
A simple experiment to verify the settings:
[root@charon etc]# tcpdmatch -d -i /etc/xinetd.conf sshd 195.113.21.131
warning: sshd: no such process name in /etc/xinetd.conf
client: address 195.113.21.131
server: process sshd
matched: hosts.deny line 5
access: denied
[root@charon etc]# tcpdmatch -d -i /etc/xinetd.conf sshd 195.113.21.130
warning: sshd: no such process name in /etc/xinetd.conf
client: address 195.113.21.130
server: process sshd
matched: hosts.allow line 10
access: granted
This seems to be fine. But when I go to the machine 195.113.21.131, I can simply log in with no trouble at all.
This is really strange. Does it have something to do with the xinetd warning? I am not using xinetd... Maybe I'm doing something wrong. If you have experienced such a trouble, please give me a hint.elasticdog wrote:So should our package not have the ListenAddress 0.0.0.0 line uncommented by default? My guess would be that since it listens on all local addresses by default, we're just overwriting that when specifying 0.0.0.0, which isn't valid. That was users don't have to specify their local IP address. Unless I'm wrong, shouldn't this be a bug/feature request for the packager?
This doesn't seem to be a package bug... IMHO, sshd must respect all the settings in hosts.deny and hosts.allow, regardless the IP address it listens on. The behaviour I noticed seems to be much more complicated. Basic settings (daemon name mentioned in hosts.*) worked, as far as I didn't want a "per IP" configuration. For example, including the daemon in hosts.allow really enabled remote connections, but any closer specifications (subdomains, EXCEPT operator...) were ignored. Access was simply granted without further evaluation. Excluding sshd from hosts.allow worked as one would assume. When I specified ListenAddress, everything started to work properly. This is mysterious. There are millions of computers using tcp wrappers and ssh, so it's hard to believe there could be a bug. -
Communication Problem between Listener and OEM
Dear all,
I had my OEM running and communicating with the database without any problem until I had a problem with other client and kill some OEM and Listener process, now it's not communicating with the listener.
I restarted my PC and tried to start afresh hoping that it ran as it had been, but the result is on the contrary. Somehow, the communication is corrupted. Currently, I can start the OEM using
emtcl start dbconsolebut when I try to start the listener from the browser from Net Services Administration: Host Login, it keeps starting without success.
the following is the Manager trace file, which got warnings and errors that I don't understand
emagent.trc:

1. emtcl start dbconsole
2. start database from sqlplus using startup command
3. Open up browser, it me brought to OEM database control page.
4. Start listener ORACLE_LISTENER that associates with OEM from OEM database control page.
5. Brought me to NET login page, enter the login page, enable the listener.
6. At this point everything was just dandy:

Problem with the wrong host name, when accessing IR or ID
Hey all,
I am trying to accessing the IR and ID at my client however the wrong host name is being called. For instance the
URL should start nero.bcm.tmc.edu, but it is calling just nero. The basis guy here fixed a similar problem in the exchange profile for calling the Builder start page, where do we need to fix the problems for accessiing the IR and ID for the start page?
Kind regards,
ChrisProblem reso;ved, just had to restart XI for the changes to take effect

Hi at all.... I'm a newbie with database oracle.,
I have the follow problem:
I installed Oracle Database 11g R2 XE on my guest operating system CentOS 6.5.
I have changed the hostname in my SO CentOS (where is installed oracle 11g R2 XE) after installation was completed successfully.
-) Before and during installation the hostname was localhost.
-) After installation I changed the hostname in VMCentOS
From the moment I changed the hostname, nothing starts up automatically. In particular, the listener and the database instance does not starts up automatically.
When I starts up the listener manually and I try to connect to database instance with SQLPLUS i get this error:
ORA-12514: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor
I think that the problem is due to the changed hostname because I, for testing and debugging purpose, re-installed a new OS CentOS virtual machine, re-installed oracle database 11g and I have not got that problem. The database instance and the listener starts up automatically!
Can any one tell me if maybe the problem is related to the hostname changed? ... and Why?
P.S.: After changed the hostname I have also modified the listener.ora and the tnsnames.ora by modifying the HOST with the correct hostname.-) Output of command chkconfig (there isn't any line oracle-xe 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off):

Hi, I've just installed DevSuiteHome1, OraDb10g_home1, and Oracle Developer Suite - DevSuiteHome1 and will be creating forms for an assignment. I've managed to log in to SQL*Plus with: "/ as sysdba" and successfully created a new user with a password and created a table "student", what privileges should I give this user (currently DBA) to allow them to access simple forms?.
When I log in to SQL*Plus I get in without entering a "Host String", do I need this? What is a Host String?
Also, though I don't need the database name just yet, I'd like to know how to find it!
Thanks for reading, I'm grateful for any help.
Will. The more formal way of reading that is
sqlplus user/password@service-information
where service-information is somehow translated into a combination of 3 pieces of information
1) how to find the host or computer where the database resides
2) which port the listener is monitoring
3) which service (commonly mistaken as database) to which the listener should provide a connection
(A database, when 'running', has a default service that matches the database name.)
If you are logged on the the same machine as the database, you can bypass the network and the listener by setting the ORACLE_SID and implying the 3 pieces of information.
If you are remote, there are several ways of getting the 3 pieces. The most common is to use the TNSNAMES.ORA to translate the service-information alias into the needed information. The translation could also be stored in an LDAP database Using InstantClient you have added variations, such as 'supply the host name and assume the listener is monitoring port 1521 for one and only one database', or supplying the whole translation manually. -
After loading the new OS my songs do not play correctly, is anyone else having this issue? Titles are wrong on songs and it just doesn’t play certain songs in random play or even if you select them individually. What’s up? Kind of frustrating!!!
I had the same issue. In fact I posted it yesterday, but didn't get any replies. I physically synched my phone to PC iTunes. on the PC, under the phone/music tab, I unchecked the synch music box and then the apply button to remove all of the music from my phone. Then once that synch finished, I went back and selected all music, and synch music and apply to put it back on to the phone. So far, I haven't had an issue again, but I also haven't listened very long. Hope this helps!

Need help solving listener and Oracle problems with Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger"
I have Oracle 10g working on Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger" except for the listener and Oracle net 8 configuration. I have not been able to get the Oracle listener to work with my built in Mac Airport wireless network card or built in ethernet card. I keep getting the errors

[email protected]Hi Ben,
how does your listener.ora look like ?
Mine is:
LISTENER =
(DESCRIPTION_LIST =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = ronald-g4-eth)(PORT = 1521))
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = ronald-g4-wifi)(PORT = 1521))
and listens to the ethernet and airport address.
When do you get the problems ?

How configure correctly Listener and TNSNAMES
Hi to All,
This is my scenario.
Actually I have 2 machine under Linux, the SERVER01 and SERVER02.
1) On both is installed Oracle DB Version 9.2.0.4.0
2) On SERVER01 is installed Apache and PHP
3) On SERVER01 run an application PHP that use a DB located on the same server.
This is the LISTENER:
SID_LIST_LISTENER =
(SID_LIST =
(SID_DESC =
(SID_NAME = orcl)
(ORACLE_HOME = /home/oracle/OraHome1)
LISTENER =
(DESCRIPTION_LIST =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = server01.lan)(PORT = 1521))
)and the TNSNAMES is
orcl =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = server01.lan)(PORT = 1521))
(CONNECT_DATA =
(SID = orcl)
)Now I need configure Listener and TNSNAMES in order to use with my Application on SERVER01 another DB (for example SID = MYDB2 and alias = MYDB2) located on SERVER02 (IP 192.168.99.98).
I have tried with this Listener and this TNSNAMES:
SID_LIST_LISTENER =
(SID_LIST =
(SID_DESC =
(SID_NAME = orcl)
(ORACLE_HOME = /home/oracle/OraHome1)
(SID_DESC =
(SID_NAME = MYDB2)
(ORACLE_HOME = /home/oracle/OraHome1)
LISTENER =
(DESCRIPTION_LIST =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = web.server01.lan)(PORT = 1521))
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = 192.168.99.98)(PORT = 1521))
)But when I restart the listener this error is returned:
TNS-12545: Connect failed because target host or object does not exist
TNS-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error
TNS-00515: Connect failed because target host or object does not exist
Can someone help me to configure correctly the listener and resolve my problem ?
Thank You and best regards.
Gaetano(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = server01.lan)(PORT = 1521))
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = server01.lan)(PORT = 1521))server01.lan doesn't look like a valid hostname to me. Were you able to ping to this hostname? -
Setting the listener and tnsnames.ora
Hi,
I have two node cluster database 10.2.0.4 on Linux. Someone messed up with the tnsnames file and also the local, remote listener setting are gone during the switchover.
Now I just want to replace the new tns entries, listener entries, set the local/remote listener and then register the local/remote listener. During these changes it will not affect the applications, but just want to know is there any specific steps which I have to keep in mind.
Thank you.
Edited by: 936264 on May 23, 2012 8:52 AMHi
Did you not back them up? :-)
The answer to your question is yes. Basically, you need your listener referenced in the listener.ora for each node, then you need to reference those listeners in your tnsnames.ora - one for your local listener and another for your remote listener. A good starting point will be what you've got in your LOCAL_LISTENER and REMOTE_LISTENER parameter - that will show the names of the entries you need to create in the tnsnames.ora. I have all entries in the listener.ora and tnsnames.ora on both nodes just for simplicity but you don't have to do that.
Any idea what port you used for your listener? The default 1521?
A couple of examples from my test system:
listener.ora (we use port 1550 by the way):
LISTENER_DEVDB_NODE1 =
(DESCRIPTION_LIST =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = node1-vip)(PORT = 1550)(IP = FIRST))
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = node1)(PORT = 1550)(IP = FIRST))
tnsnames.ora
LISTENER_DEVDB_NODE1 =
(DESCRIPTION_LIST =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = node1-vip)(PORT = 1550)(IP = FIRST))
LISTENER_DEVDB_NODE2 =
(DESCRIPTION_LIST =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = node2-vip)(PORT = 1550)(IP = FIRST))
LISTENERS_DEVDB =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = node1-vip)(PORT = 1550)(IP = FIRST))
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = node2-vip)(PORT = 1550)(IP = FIRST))
So our local listener is LISTENER_DEVDB_NODEn for each and REMOTE_LISTENER is LISTENERS_DEVDB on each node.
Hope that helps. Any further questions let me know....
cheers,
Mark

How to configure listener and tnsnames.ora on 10g version
how to configure listener and tnsnames.ora on 10g version
If you are on linux platform, on command prompt execute netmgr and configure listener fromt there. Or go to $oracle_home/network/admin/listner.ora write the following
SID_LIST_LISTENER =
(SID_LIST =
(SID_DESC =
(SID_NAME = PLSExtProc)
(ORACLE_HOME = /u01/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/db_1)
(PROGRAM = extproc)
LISTENER =
(DESCRIPTION_LIST =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = IPC)(KEY = EXTPROC1))
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = localhost)(PORT = 1521))
For tnsnames.ora write the following
ORCL =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = localhost)(PORT = 1521))
(CONNECT_DATA =

Question regarding Listener and Server Processes in dedicated server mode
Good morning,
The Oracle documentation states that when a client connection request is received on the server, the Listener creates a Server Process which will work with the database instance to carry out the tasks requested by the user/client process. So far, everything good.
Now, when the user is at the Oracle server itself, the Listener does not need to be running to establish a connection to the database. It is therefore possible to stop the Listener and still connect using sqlplus and a valid username and password.
In the above case, the question is: if the Listener is not running, what/who created the Server Process that communicates with the database instance on behalf of the user ? Stated a different way, in the normal case, the Listener would get the request and create the server process. When the Listener is not running what part of Oracle gets the requests and creates the server process ?
Clarification on how this case is handled is much appreciated, thank you,
John. When using bequeath protocol the server process is created by the client process: it's the client process that is using ORACLE_SID and ORACLE_HOME to compute shared memory key (under UNIX) to know which SGA to attach (i.e. which instance to connect to):

If the client and database exist on the same computer, then a client connection can be passed directly to a dedicated server process without going through the listener. This is known as a bequeath protocol. The application initiating the session spawns a dedicated server process for the connection request. This happens automatically if the application used to start the database is on the same computer as the database.
