Wrong Locations when importing photos

I'd be grateful if some could help with this.
I used an app on my iPhone called GeoTag Photos to add geotag my photos (obviously!)
I've just upgraded to iPhoto 11 and imported some photos that have been geotagged. I used EXIF Viewer to check the tags and they are correct. An example of one (in Manchester, UK) is:
Latitude: N 53° 27' 53.60
Longitude: W 2° 15' 23.90
However, when I import this photo into iPhoto 11, it appears in the middle of the North Sea! It looks like it's changing West to East.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks

Here's my theory on the Wise River thing, which happened to about 100 of my photos. The concept of place in iPhoto 9.0 is a circle on the map, specified by the GPS coordinates of the center and the radius of the circle. Looking at Wise River on a map of the world, I noticed that it appears to be the center of the smallest circle containing the continent of North America. I speculate that when iPhoto imports a photo with GPS data it assigns a place to the photo if it can, and if the preferences are set to have it look up places automatically then it looks for a place in its online database of places. I think that database has a place called "North America", and that the algorithm for assigning places to GPS data sometimes can't do any better than assigning North America as the place of the photo (either through a fault in the algorithm or missing data in the places database).
Now here's where the trouble starts. iPhoto does not actually change the GPS data in a photo when it imports it, it just assigns a place to the photo based on that data (I've checked this). However, if you later edit the definition of a place (by changing the coordinates or the radius in the Manage My Places window), it sets the GPS coordinates of all photos tagged with that place to the GPS coordinates of the center of the place. (I've checked this too.) Mostly this would seem a good idea: if you have a place called "Grandma's House" and you discover you've located it incorrectly on the map and want to move it, you want it to bring all the photos in Grandma's House with it. But my guess is that somehow this behavior was invoked for photos tagged as being in North America, either when the library was upgraded or because someone at Apple was fiddling with the database.

  • Lightroom 5 hangs when importing photos

    Hey
    My computer:
    macbook pro retina
    16GB ram
    Software
    latest updated os X
    lightroom 5
    Camera
    canon 5D MII
When importing 300 raw pictures from the camera with LR5, the software crashes 10(!) times. I import the picturers to a external HDD. The pictures where converted to the DNG-format.
    What can go wrong?
When importing with the photoloader from mac os x everyting went fine.
Is there a fix on this issue?

I still got a big issue when importing raw photos.
I want to import some photos, no mather how many, lightroom, finder, my whole mac is crashing.
I only import the CR2 files, no smart preview, no tags, no convertion to DNG, no renaming, nothing else, ... There is no video on the card in the camera.
    I this a know issue?
When I use the normal photo importer of mac OS X, everything is ok.

  • Wrong date when importing video from AVCHD

    Hi,
I encountered a problem with the new Photos application: when importing photos and videos from my camera (Sony α5000, fairly recent), the dates of the videos are all wrong. In fact, all videos have the same date as the AVCHD directory on the SD card, instead of using the corresponding clip file date. I checked with iPhoto, and the app put the correct date on the file.
Could you fix this bug? Or is there a better place I could submit the bug to?

Welcome to the family, Shane's material will get you started.
Also, search the forums for Nikon, DSLR, and related terms. You also need to read the manual that came with the Nikon, it clearly explains the codec in use. There are literally millions of Nikon and Canon DSLR video geeks out there and they support each other's efforts on the manufacturers' supprot sites as well as hundreds of other forums. You will find may more Nikon shooters who use FCP on Nikon forums than you will find FCP users who use Nikons here.

  • When importing photos with iBooks Gallery widget, is anyone aware of a technique for simultaneously importing the photo's description (or jpeg file name) and writing it into the iBook Author caption field for the imported photo?

When importing photos with the iBooks Author Gallery widget, is anyone aware of a technique for simultaneously importing the photo's description (or jpeg file name) and writing it into the iBook Author caption field for the corresponding imported photo? I have 4,800 stills to import and can't imagine it's necessary to copy and paste the description for each.

As always, feel free to use the 'Provide iBooks Author Feedback' menu item for features you'd like added in the future, etc.

  • Since i upgraded to Yosemite, when importing photos to iPhoto, they no longer appear in the 'events' summary in library. Why is this and how can i amend?

Since i upgraded to Yosemite, when importing photos to iPhoto, they no longer appear in the 'events' summary in library. Why is this and how can i amend?

The events may be incorrectly sorted. Try to sort the events by date, while in "Events" view.
Go to the "View" menu: Sort Photos > By Date > Descending. That should bring the most recent events to the top of the list.

  • Excluding subfolders when importing photos in Photoshop Elements 10

In past versions of Photoshop Elements you could exclude subfolders when importing photos from files and folders.  In version 10 the "get photos from subfolders" is greyed out.  I normally do not want to include subfolders when importing.  I only want the top current folder.  Why the change?

    Hi,
    Just a further thought.
I have now tried versions 9 and 10 on a Windows 7 system and they both work the same. The "include subfolder" box is not active until I select a folder from the right side - selecting one on the left side doesn't activate it.
Which operating system are you using?
Did you change operating systems when you changed to PSE 10?

  • When importing photos from iphoto to Aperture....

When importing photos from iphoto to Aperture 3 it shows two versions of each image. One is original and one is iphoto edited.  It shows this for every picture even if it was never edited in iphoto.  Has anyone ever experienced this?  Is so, what image should I use to edit in iphoto?

This is asked and covered a lot here, a search of the list will bring up numerous other threads covering this. Also the More Like This box on the right side of the page will show you other posts on this topic.
This post, Duplicates when importing from iPhoto is the most recent example.
Briefly iPhoto took even the most trivial change to an image as an edit and created a new image. The most common reason for this is rotated images.
As for which image of the two you want to keep, that's entirely up to you. If there is really no difference between the two then you can keep either it makes no difference.
The thread I linked to above will explain how to use Aperture's filters to gather up all of one or the other.

  • When importing photos from my iPhone black boxes appear in place of random photos in the library and in Photostream.

When importing photos from my iPhone black boxes appear in place of random photos in the iPhoto library and in Photostream. It has no apparent pattern, the photos are just blank. It's not just icons, when I go to edit the photos externally in Photoshop it opens an image filled with nothing but black.
This is more than annoying. It's effectively deleting photos I'm taking on vacation and so forth.
    Anyone?

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • When importing photos into iPhoto I get an error Unreadable Files:

When importing photos into iPhoto I get an error Unreadable Files: The following files could not be imported (they may be an unrecognized file type or the files may not contain valid data).
I can open the JPG in question with PREVIEW, photoshop etc.. actually if I try to import a photo that I had originally imported it also fails..
    Please help... Thank you..

I too had this error message (and to be honest, it was becoming a bit of a pain). I resolved it in a slightly different way to Terence.
I had 10 photos that were allegedly unreadable; however, as Terence rightly says, they are duplicates. When I opened iPhoto I mad a note of each of the files concerned and did a Spotlight search throughout my hard drive.
For each photo, there were four or five duplicates. I deleted all but one of each of the photos and then reopened iPhoto. No more error message.
The original problem stemmed from importing my files directly from an external device I was using with a previous computer [that was running XP].
    Anyway, hope this helps.

  • When importing photo's into Apperture via iPhoto Browser I get 2 Versions of the master import as opposed to just one?

When importing photo's into Apperture via iPhoto Browser I get 2 Versions of the master as opposed to just one?
    Why is this?
    Are there two master photo's?

When you import to Aperture using this method you get all the versions that iPhoto has - Mster and Edited  version. If you haven't edited the photo then tow possibilities:
A: the photo is Raw and you'e gettting the automatic preview that iPhoto creates on import as well
B: The shot has an auto-rotate tag from the camera

  • Cannot drag and drop to Albums when importing photos

When you import images to Photos, you cannot drag and drop the photos to any of your albums.  What was Apple thinking by eliminating this organization feature that has been part of iPhoto since 1.0?  For example, when you import photos from your SD card (from your DLSR camera), you cannot drag and drop the photos to an album (when you have view sidebar selected).  If you select all the images, Photos for OS X will not let you drag and drop them anywhere.  Clicking on the selected photos to drag them will only de-select the photo you are hovering over.  How stupid is that?  How can Apple call that photo management?  People organize photos in Albums, but Photos for OS X only wants you to dump them into the program without any organization.  In order to drop the photos into an album, you have to import the photos and then click on Last Import.  Then select all the photos from that location, and then you can drag and drop them into an album.  Totally stupid.

Solution may be found if you search in the "More Like This" section over in the right column.

  • Remembering directories when importing photos

When I do "Import Photos", "Copy Photos to a new location and Import", and I click on the "Choose" buttons, I would like the browser that opens to remember the last directory I used, and start browsing from there. Currently it starts from the Desktop (under MS Windows) and it is annoying to always have to navigate the directory structure from the top.

I too had this error message (and to be honest, it was becoming a bit of a pain). I resolved it in a slightly different way to Terence.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Is this for any new photo or just one in particular?
Backup the library and try the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache files that are located in the User/Library/Application Support/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
    Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select options #1, #2 and #6.
