Wrong number of messages in dock icon

I have a red circle with the number 3 attached to the Mail icon in my dock, even though I have read all messages in each of my mailboxes and folders. I created a Smart Mailbox that showed all unread messages and cleared everything that the Smart Mailbox found, yet the number 3 still persists. Does anyone know how to eliminate this number?
Thanks.

I had the same issue after a power failure knocked my iMac down in full operation. For days I had this nagging 1 message unread on my dock icon. I have a massive list of neatly organized hierarchical mailboxes, with an equally massive list of rules to put incoming messages straight into the appropriate mailbox depending on sender, subject, etc...
Reading this thread gave me the idea to create a smart mailbox with the unread messages. Bam! It showed the one message which was unread, even though the containing mailbox folder didn't show it as unread. That solved the problem.
You might try deleting the smart mailbox with the unread messages, (eventually stopping Mail, restarting the computer), and re-creating the smart mailbox for unread messages.

  • Wrong number of messages in mail title bar

A minor issue: mail is displaying the wrong number of messages in the title bar of the mail window. (Says 45 when there's actually 16). Quitting & restarting the app fixes it, as does "rebuild", but "get mail" doesn't.
    Thanks!

  • Unity reporting wrong number of messages

    This is Unity Connection 8.6.2.
I have a couple of VM boxes with wrong number of messages. Users are getting false indications of messages on their phones as well.
We rebuilt one these VM boxes and the issue is gone on that extension. Rebooting the server didn't fix it.
Any idea what would cause this?

We found that someone changed the Aging Policy for the users set to Do Not Age Messages. This caused the system to keep deleted messages for over 2 years. We set them back to Default System Policy and the number is back to a normal level.

  • What is the number in the terminal dock icon?

Since I upgrade my iMac and it's now Lion, my terminal dock icon has a little red circle with "1" in it, similar to the one Thunderbird has that shows how many unread messages there are.  There are a dozen terminal windows, and none are actively running processes, so I'm not sure what "1" could be indicating, and Terminal "Help" is about as useful as Mac Help ever is - i.e. not at all...

It's a new feature in Lion and it tells you that one of your tabs has new content in it. The number corresponds to the number of tabs with new content.
BTW the tab with thte new content will have a little bell in it if it isn.t the current tab.

  • Leopard Mail Not Showing # Unread Messages in Dock Icon

For some inexplicable reason, my Leopard version of Mail has stopped showing unread message notifications. I still hear the mail ding, but there's no little red badge on the doc icon showing how many unread messages I have. And, yes, the "Dock unread count" is set to all mailboxes since I have multiple email accounts I check. Has anyone else had this problem and how do I fix it?

Jeff Greenberg's response was brilliant! Thanks Jeff.
I have had 2 "unread mail" items showing up for weeks and have been agonizing over what and where they were, how important the "unread" mail was, and what life experiences, deals, etc., I was missing out on. Creating a Smart Mailbox showing Unread mail worked - one caveat however: Add a second condition - that the the Unread Mail be in your INBOX (forgetting to add this condition this showed me HUNDREDS of unread mail items that resided in my OTHER Smart Mailboxes).
It worked. I found, read, and deleted my "unread mail" - Nothing important. Thanks again!

  • Wrong number of messages in GMAIL inbox

    Hi all,
I just bought a 13 inch macbook air with OSX Lion and I'm loving it but I just have a small problem with configuring gmail in mail and I hope some of you can help.
I set up the gmail IMAP account in Mail. It works fine except that it indicates that there is 1385 unread messages in the gmail inbox while there is none. 1385 seems to be the maximum number of unread message you can have in Mail and so the counter is not upgraded when I receive a new mail, which makes it a little bit harder to spot that I received new messages.
Anybody knows how to fix it so that the gmail inbox indicate the actual nunber of unread messages?
    Thanks,
    J.

Yes, I did: I used cmd-A to select all the messages and the inbox and mark them all as read. But it did not change anything.
The same way, the rebuilt mailbox did not have any effect neither.
    Thanks anyway!
    J.

  • ICal dock icon & iPhoto event's name issue

Recently I noticed that the date number in the iCal dock icon and the event's title in iPhoto were a few pixel shifted up. How can I solve this?
    Here are two screenshots:

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Yes, I see on the iCal icon the 4 is shifted up into the red. It's odd. Try this...
It may be LaunchServices. These are only cache files but can get corrupted.
Launch /Utilities/Terminal and *copy & paste* this at the command line to rebuild LaunchServices:
    Code:
    <pre class="alt2" style="margin:0px; padding:3px; border:1px inset; width:640px; height:34px; overflow:auto">/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user</pre>
Then press return. Wait until terminal returns to the command line. Quit Terminal. After that, log out and back in or restart. Let us know

  • Wrong number of unread Mails in Dock icon

I have set Mail to check all mail folders to display the number of unread mails in the dock icon because I'm using IMAP accounts and have incoming mails filtered into different folders.
However, even if I mark all mails as read in every folder the dock icon still shows one unread message. I can't seem to find that damned mail.
Can I somehow reset the count? How do I find, which mail Mail still thinks is unread?
    Thanks in advance.

Create a smart folder based on mail status is unread. Then go to that folder and you should find the mail
An "unread mail" smart folder is quite handy for other things as well, such as easily finding all unread mail that's scattered across all those folders -- much more efficient

  • Wrong number of new mails in dock icon

I have created a number of (local) folders and rules that move the appropriate mail to those folders. However the dock icon counts only the number of new mails in the IN-box and not the ones in those folders. Should I have done something else?

In Mail's General preferences, you can set the "Dock unread count" popup menu to "All Mailboxes" instead of "Inbox Only".
If you need an even more specific way to determine the quantity, you can create a new smart mailbox in which you define how you want the count generated. You can then set the popup menu to this smart mailbox instead of the "All Mailboxes" or "Inbox Only" choices.
    Hope this helps....

  • Dock icon says there are unread messages - there arent' any

Since a few weeks I've had this problem:
Every morning I go through my e-mail, after reading every one of them and marking them as read, the Dock icon tells me there are still unread messages.
Even selecting everything in my inbox (28512 messages), marking everything unread and then marking everything read (an operation that takes quite a while) there are still unread messages left, according to the Dock icon.
The only way I know how to fix it is to restart Mail.
Anyone know what's going on here? It's getting quite irritating...

I, too, am having a problem finding "phantom" unread messages. I've got a number of accounts set up and three of them are showing this problem. It started when I needed to restart mail from a time machine back-up after a problem with my system. The mail messages were all imported into the mail database and some show now as unread. I've been through all the in boxes and found no unread messages...
    any help would be welcome.

  • Mail doesn't have number next to dock icon anymore?

Also it doesn't show if an email has an attachment or not.. just wondering if anyone else is missing these elements?

To get the number of unread messages to show up on the dock icon, try activating Helvetica in the Font Book application.

  • Mail's dock icon is "badged" with 300 "unread" messages?

Hello, I'm having an issue in Apple Mail wherein every time I open the app, it badges the dock icon with 300 unread messages.... but the app itself (i.e. Main window) shows NO new messages. Anyone have any clue what's going on?
Any and all help is greatly appreciated.
PS - For my system specs, see my sig, as they're always kept up-to-date.

Thanks Mulder! Worked like a charm (mostly).
Let me clarify about the mostly part.
I followed the directions you gave and lo and behold my "dock count" was back to normal. The only problem was, all of my RSS articles are showing a header that looks like an email, instead of an RSS message. (Y'know with the Blue...)
I've written down all of the RSS feeds I'm subscribed to in TextEdit. I'll go to each site and add them again manually and get back with you if that works.
    Thanks again!

  • Disabling certain mail accounts from "new message count" in Mail dock icon

    Hi,
I'd like to disable two of my mail accounts from affecting the new message count that appears over mail's dock icon. How might I do this?
    Thanks in advace

the only option you have is to choose between all mailboxes and inbox, in mail>preferences>general
other than that, you may want to look at plugins such as dockstar to do more customization of the notification features: http://www.ecamm.com/mac/dockstar/
    hope this helps

    Hello Support,
I have a vbscript which does some database query. i see from the log that script quits with the below error.
Error message: 450 [Wrong number of arguments or invalid property assignment]
but when i execute the same query directly on database, it gives me correct result. also i see that not all the time script quits with this error.
Does anyone have idea how to troubleshoot it?

i see. i know at which line it fails as error handling is done and will be written in the log.

    LogWrite ("Error message: " & err.number & " [" & err.description & "]")
    wscript.quit(1)
    end if
and this piece of code write following in the log.
    07.10.2014 16:55:03:Unable to run query

07.10.2014 16:55:03:Error message: 450 [Wrong number of arguments or invalid property assignment]
Where as i can run query "select object_text from sto_ov_externalnode where name = '{B10255CF-F618-45FB-99BC-31A57D747702}'" successfully directly on database.
also in the next cycle same query will be successfull within script too.
Does this help in understanding the problem?
