Wrong number of new mails in dock icon

I have created a number of (local) folders and rules that move the appropriate mail to those folders. However the dock icon counts only the number of new mails in the IN-box and not the ones in those folders. Should I have done something else?

In Mail's General preferences, you can set the "Dock unread count" popup menu to "All Mailboxes" instead of "Inbox Only".
If you need an even more specific way to determine the quantity, you can create a new smart mailbox in which you define how you want the count generated. You can then set the popup menu to this smart mailbox instead of the "All Mailboxes" or "Inbox Only" choices.
Hope this helps....

  • Wrong number of unread Mails in Dock icon

I have set Mail to check all mail folders to display the number of unread mails in the dock icon because I'm using IMAP accounts and have incoming mails filtered into different folders.
However, even if I mark all mails as read in every folder the dock icon still shows one unread message. I can't seem to find that damned mail.
Can I somehow reset the count? How do I find, which mail Mail still thinks is unread?
    Thanks in advance.

Create a smart folder based on mail status is unread. Then go to that folder and you should find the mail
An "unread mail" smart folder is quite handy for other things as well, such as easily finding all unread mail that's scattered across all those folders -- much more efficient

  • Unread mail on dock icon?

    Hi,
Been using Mail for a couple of months now but I don't see the number of unread mails thing on the mail icon in the dock. Why is this? Does it only show unread mails in the inbox? I use rules to filter mail into smartboxes.
Also, this applies to any app really, but what is the difference between 'Hide' (Apple-H) and 'Close Window' (Apple-W)??
    I've often wondered.
    Thanks,
    iLee

Yes, it only shows messages in the inbox. There's an app called DockStar that will allow you to modify this behaviour:
    http://www.ecamm.com/mac/dockstar/
Hide hides the whole application - so if there are multiple windows they will all disappear (but are still open so that when you select the app again they'll all be in the same position).
Close closes the window - so you would need to open a new window to get back to it.

  • Mail's dock icon is "badged" with 300 "unread" messages?

Hello, I'm having an issue in Apple Mail wherein every time I open the app, it badges the dock icon with 300 unread messages.... but the app itself (i.e. Main window) shows NO new messages. Anyone have any clue what's going on?
Any and all help is greatly appreciated.
PS - For my system specs, see my sig, as they're always kept up-to-date.

Thanks Mulder! Worked like a charm (mostly).
Let me clarify about the mostly part.
I followed the directions you gave and lo and behold my "dock count" was back to normal. The only problem was, all of my RSS articles are showing a header that looks like an email, instead of an RSS message. (Y'know with the Blue...)
I've written down all of the RSS feeds I'm subscribed to in TextEdit. I'll go to each site and add them again manually and get back with you if that works.
    Thanks again!

  • How to force safari to open a new window when dock icon is clicked

If Safari is already running on my MacBook Yosemite, and I click on the Safari icon in the dock, the Safari window is brought forward.  The behavior  I want is whenever I click the safari icon on the dock, is that a new safari browser window is opened.  I don't see this option in preferences (or any keyboard  mouse combination) that would make the dock icon open a new browser window.    (an option is available for new windows if you click on a hyperlink, but not if you click on the dock icon) .
p.s. And I don't want to first  have to place focus on the current running safari and then click File New...too many steps when all I want is a new browser window
    Thanks in advance

    Hi css,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that you would like to click on Safari in your Dock and have it open a new Safari Window. As you said in your post, clicking on Safari in the Dock brings the Safari window forward. There are a couple of possibilities to help resolve this situation. You can control-click (right click if enabled) on Safari in your Dock which will give you the option to open a new window. You can also click and hold on Safari, otherwise known as Press, to display these same options.

  • SecUpd2006-002, mail not showing new mails in dock anymore

    hello folks,
i am not sure if the following problem is linked to the SecUpd2006-002 i just installed, but this just occured afterwards:
mail is not showing the arrival of new emails in the dock anymore!
ya know, that little red dot with the numbers of new mails in it.
(is there a button or something to toggle this on and off anyway?)
in mail itself they are still marked as new (bold letters) but in the dock nothing happens.
anyone else having this problem? found out a solution already?
    thank you for your thoughts.
    p.s.: have repaired permissions already

all right, found the solution by myself:
was kind of a font problem.
got a helvetica font from a customer. installation seems to have overwritten/removed the "normal" helvetica font installed by the system.
so mail went nuts. noticed - besides the above mentioned problem - that the headers of the mails seemed to be a little weird: mail-adresses bigger sizes (or different font) than the other infos.
so, if you ever run into something similar like this: clean up your fonts ;o)
glad it's over, have a good one!

  • Negative number of new mail

    Hii all,
I am having a problem with AOL mail. I don't know if its related to upgrading to 1.01 but it just appeared after upgrading yesterday. If I have read all the messages in my inbox the mail counter on the home screen indicates -1. When I'm in the inbox the counter at the top of the page was indicating a very large number I couldn't see but that seems to have fixed itself.
I have done a phone reset several times and deleted the mail account and re-entered it with no success.
    Thanks for any help!
    John

How do you know you have new messages on the phone if it isn't marked on the home screen?
In all seriousness, my gut instinct would say that you don't have any new messages, but when you open the mail app it downloads the new message headers. Is it doing this even when you see new messages and then exit, or only initially? That is, if you see new messages, but don't actually read them, and then exit to the home screen, does the icon still say 0 messages?
The other option is indeed a problem with the mail app, for which I can only suggest the ever-exciting wipe 'n restore.

All I get are the mail tabs at the top of the screen where I have to click on Message viewer to open up the mail window. Anybody have a fix to this? I want to be able to click on the Mail icon and my mail window opens. Thanks.

  • Notify about number of new mails Nokia X

One thing I spotted, I can place mail shortcut on main screen but it does not notifiy me about newly arrived mails. This should be changed, because now I always have to open the mail account to check for mails.

We all know that Android is different from Symbian.
And yes, the same feature is available on Android but Nokia X has a different Launcher.
I am just stating the fact that this feature is currently not available and nothing else.

  • Mail Dock icon "new mail" count wrong

The Mail icon in my dock shows 11 new mails. I open Mail and there is no new mail. The icon then shows none, then a bit later it shows 11 again. If I get a real new mail it will show 12 new mails. The actual number of new mail adds to the phantom 11.

  • Disabling certain mail accounts from "new message count" in Mail dock icon

    Hi,
I'd like to disable two of my mail accounts from affecting the new message count that appears over mail's dock icon. How might I do this?
    Thanks in advace

the only option you have is to choose between all mailboxes and inbox, in mail>preferences>general
other than that, you may want to look at plugins such as dockstar to do more customization of the notification features: http://www.ecamm.com/mac/dockstar/
    hope this helps

  • New mail icon

starting today, the mail icon in my doc has a red circle with the number 1. I do not have any new unread mail. I have check in my inbox, sent mail, trash, and junk mailboxes. I can't seem to get rid of the red circle. Any ideas?

I had the same problem, except that Mail was constantly adding 9 to the number of new mail count. Neither reindexing nor rebuilding the mailboxes solved the problem. Finally, I went into Mail preferences, and on the general tab, I set the new mail indicator option to "inbox only" and it's working fine now. Hope this helps.

  • Mail button erroneously indicating new mail

My inbox is indicating there is new mail when in fact there is not. There is also a button on the dock icon indicating new mail.
I have quit the program and restarted and it did not go away. Any suggestions?

I recall I have a "ghost" email issue a while back. Mail's dock icon would say I had 2 unread mails, but when I'd look at the Inbox there was nothing to be seen, and the count mysterious went to zero .. only to go back to 2 some time later.
I finally discovered that there were two messages which had been originated by my ISP's mail system administrator, but which were missing some headers or were corrupt in some other way. I could see them when I used the Web Mail system provided by my ISP, but they weren't visible in Mail. While in the Web Mail, I deleted these messages and the problem went away.
So, if you have some odd issues with Mail, it's always worth using your ISP's Web Mail system to see if there's something unusual in your Inbox.

  • No sound on new mail

I have done some research and found this (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10762187&#10762187) but alas, my problem is different.
Ok, this is what I see...
    * in Mail, I open Preferences > General and have "Ping" set for "New mail sound". (it's slightly louder than the default sound, but it doesn't matter which sound I use, it doesn't work
    * "Dock unread count" = "Inbox Only" (see below)
I am using an IMAP account to a server I run locally. There are folders that appear under Inbox and at the present time non of them have any badges indicating new mail. Under the account (further down) where there are top level mail boxes there are several folders with badges indicating the unread count....
All looks good so far, then this is where the problem lies...
When I receive new mail, the badge on the mail application in the dock comes up, but no sound comes up. That badge relates directly to the inbox and new mail. But INSIDE the mail application, no matter what I do, I can not get an unread mail badge on the inbox itself. I can have any number of new mail in the inbox root, and I can see them unread (bolded) on the right side of the screen, but there is no unread count on the inbox itself (and for whatever reason this is where I think the sound alert is linked to. Because this badge is not showing up, I not get sound. It's just a hunch, but I think I'm on the game
BTW before anyone asks, yes, my sound is turned on and not muted.
    What am I missing???

I have found a work around, but it doesn't always work.
My processes thus far: I opened up Mail on a Snow Leopard and IMAP'd into the same mail account and the badge was located on the inbox. Sure enough, it sounds everytime new mail is received.
The ONLY way I can get the badge to appear on the main inbox, is to have mail monitor SEVERAL mail accounts. When I added a second IMAP account, the inbox suddenly had an unread count badge. Thinking my problem was solved, I deleted the second account and along with it, the badge also disappeared. I re-entered the account and it's back.
As I said, it still doesn't always sound for new mail, but it does sound MORE often. I'm not going to mark this as resolved, since I feel this is still a problem

  • Mail don't notified me even there's new mail.

I don't know why Mail don't notified me even there's new mail in my inbox. For example, normally, when there's a new mail in my inbox, in the home screen on the mail icon, there's a red spot on the top right corner that indicates the number of new mail that I own. But in this case, this is not happened.

Go To *Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendar>*. Make sure that *Fetch New Data* is set to Push. Make sure Push is set to On and then set the interval to check the emails.
