Hi,
In the Yosemite install program when i need to select a disk. none of them is available.
It says " This Disk does not use the GUID-partition table format. Change it with disk utility. But when i am in disk utility i can't change a thing.
I've tried it within osx and with a installation disk.
Could anyone help me out?

  • On a Multiple Boot iMac, FireFox is getting fonts from wrong partition

I run FireFox on an iMac. I have a primary partition on the build-in harddrive. Using an external harddrive, I've build another system on Snow Leopard on which I can do experiemtns safe from my main system (safe if I be reasonably careful). One of the issues is doing this is that applications that offer to update themselves do so when I'm in the 'wrong' boot. I should refuse to do it then. But I think I did so. Now adays when I startup FireFox, it is asking permission to use fonts on the boot partition of my alternate system. Using Font Book on my main system I see that the main system has fonts of the same name and probably same font data.
How do I fix the configuration of FireFox on the main partition to look for and find the fonts in the fonts installed in that boot parition?

  • Disk Utility initialized wrong partition!

My external HDD has splitted into two partition:
    - 1° partition name:TMBackupHD [HFS+] ~650GB
    - 2° partition name:Bucket [ExFat] ~350GB
1° Partition was the default partition for TimeMachine (I've stored also other my data on the root, but this isn't the problem..), whilst the 2° partition was empty.
I've would like to initialize the partiton Bucket to HFS+ file system.
For this operation I've used Disk Utility.
I've selected the right partition (Bucket), DU said me “Are you sure to initialize partion Bucket?”, I've confirmed.
The process was fast, but the result was:
    - 1° partition name:Bucket [HFS+] ~650GB --> EMPTY!!!
    - 2° partition --> DISAPPEARED!!! (through third software like iPartition I can see the 2° partition but its name is Apple_HFS_Untitled_2 and it was hidden to the system)

    How was it possible?
Is there a way to recover my first partition?
I’ve heard speaking about DiskWarrior or Disk Drill, but I don’t know if these apps might help me.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks, Matteo.

Sounds like there may have been a serious problem with your partition map. DiskWarrior may help, but also may not. Since the only data on that drive, if I'm understanding correctly, was a Time Machine backup, you probably ought to just repartition the drive and start the backup over again. (One comment, though... it's a bad idea to keep original data and backups on the same drive. You should really get another drive, one to use for data and the other to hold backups of both that drive and your MBP's internal drive.)

  • Bootcamp is showing wrong partitions at O/S selection screen.

    Hello everyone,
i recently purchased a MacBook Pro (15 inches). I used to own the previous 2009 model, the Santa Rosa model, and a PowerBook G4.
Today, i decided to replace the superdrive by the OptiBay caddy of my previous Unibody to be able to have both my SSD and my mechanical HDD in my machine.
    - So, i have put the mechanical hard drive is located on the OptiBay (Former SuperDrive SATA port), and the SSD is in place of the regular hard drive (Primary SATA port, because it's SATA III and only this port allows me to enjoy that speed).
    - After doing that, i cleanly reinstalled Snow Leopard (Vanilla 10.6.7) on the SSD, and i used the BootCamp assistant to split the mechanical hard drive into two partitions (439GB for data / 59GB for windows).
    - Then, i tried booting the CD (Which was on an external USB enclosure)...
Nothing happenend. Instead of booting the Windows Installation program, the screen either stayed black with the white blinking cursor, or if i try with RefiT it stops after the "Press any key to boot from the DVD"... It looks to me that it's impossible to install if the target disk is in "lieu and place" of the SuperDrive...
Probably a GPT / GUID / MBR mapping problem, not an issue for me. So i installed the trial version of Parallels, and completed the first installation step within it under MacOS. After that, i used the MBR generated by parallels, booted into a MacOS installation disc, and forced the MBR to be injected into the real hard drive (dd command, if=parallels mbr, of=/dev/disk0 for instance).
Everything is working fine now! However, there is a huge glitch at the OS selection time. i see my Snow Leopard partition (on the standalone SSD), but then i see two Windows partitions... Only the last one seems to boot, the first one giving me an message like "Missing Operating System"...
The thing is that i know pretty much what i'm doing... And i am also positive that i didn't mess up with the MBR.
What would be the issue here?
Thanks a lot for your time and expertise!
    Pierre.

I use Malwarebytes along with MS Security Essentials
A couple people have had trouble. Seems some Windows update perhaps.
There are updates to Chrome and FF you want to grab along with Flash.
    Run CCleaner 3 regularly
Do a Start: Run: %TEMP% and delete all the files in there, a few will not.
You should have at least 10-15GB free space
Windows is actually tighter on RAM than OS X will be so that has been one thing I find lately being a factor.
Before even using a disk drive or partition it is a good idea to test the disk for sectors. I use WD Lifeguard first and then reformat as needed along with chkdsk. Windows 8 will tell you if there are any I/O errors or needs to do a scan.

  • Choose the wrong partition format!

Hey guys i need help fast, i wasn't paying attention when installing the windows xp and i choose the "Leave the current file system intact" option and I am unable to boot up my imac. Its a black screen saying failing to boot from cd, press any key to reboot and it doesn't. I have ejected the cd and I been trying to hold down the option button to choose which to load up from but it doesn't work. I have an external hard drive that i been using for time machine, is there any way i can boot up from that disc and then have the hard drive in the imac reset to the mac os x partition? Need answers asap!

The problem is, after the comouter was restart, it can only recognize Window Vista
Might want to sign on to MS and d'load the release candidate for Windows 7, it's open public beta and good until 3/2/2010 that's month/day/year. Very nice OS and should run great on your Mac.

  • Windows 8 installed on wrong partition

I just opened my Ideapad u430, and immediately noticed that the windows OS was installed on the 500gb sata drive instead of the SSD. I'm pretty sure the whole point of the SSD portion was to install the OS on it to speed performance. Any tips on how to transfer the OS onto the other side of the partition without having the original discs?
    Solved!

    Hello and welcome,
What size is the SSD?  They are usually relatively small and configured to intelligently cache frequently-accessed files.  Typically they are not the primary OS drive.

  • Problem integrating EMC CX3-20 to Sun T5220 server - Wrong partition?

    Hi All,
I have a problem integrating the EMC CX3-20 to Sun Sparc Enterprise T5220 server.
In the EMC, two LUNs were created. 1.6TB and 10G were allocated respectively. They were represented by emcpower0a and emcpower1a in Solaris 10.
I'm wondering why the format -> partition command shows different information for the two LUNs.
The partition command on emcpower0a shows the "total disk sector available". But the command on emcpower1a shows "the total disk cylinder available"
I can't use the the disk emcpower0a in Veritas because slice 2 (s2) was not displayed when the command "vxdisk list" is executed. It show "emcpower0" instead of "emcpower0s2".
Can someone let me know how to solve this problem? Appreciate your help. Thanks.

This is related to the size of the 1.6 TB device. The different disk label you are getting is the newer EFI disk label, which Solaris requires on all devices larger than 1 TB. SunSolve doc 216611 explains the differences between the older VTOC label and the EFI label, and links to the VxVM 4.1 Release Notes for Solaris:
    http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/275690.htm
Veritas began support for EFI-labelled devices with VxVM 4.1, for Solaris 10 only, but you must be on Sol 10 since you're on a 5220.

  • I can't install OS X Mountain Lion due to wrong partition scheme.

I just bought and downloaded Mountain Lion on my Mac. Now I'm trying to upgrade but seems to fail.
I made a second partition on the same drive last year to put in Gentoo (unix) on one and by so used a double boot. When i released Gentoo from the harddrive i could no longer make it one partition.
Now it says that I don't have the right partition Scheme and tells me how to change it. Only problem is that I can't change the partitions. At all.
What should I do? Clean install? How?

In Disk Utility, where you were, in the left hand column in the window highlight the Hard Drive that the Partitions are on>in the upper right portion of the window click on the betton "Partition">below that a diagram showing your hard drive with its various partitions will appear> click on one of the Partitions shown that you want to Remove, to highlight it, and click on the "Minus" symbol at the bottom of the column>this action will Remove That partition only.  Repeat these steps for each Partition that you want Removed.  Do NOT remove the Partition that your Main OS is on that you want to keep.  And Removing each of those Partitions will of course DELETE ALL THE DATA contained on each one.  Make backups before you start of anything you want to keep off of them.
    Hope this helps

  • Windows 7 in Wrong Partition-How to Move?

I just downloaded Windows 7 to my Mac-Mini,mid-2007 edition. (Parallels)
    I have 2 partitions,HD 1 (39GB) ,which has OS-X 10.7.5, and a vacant partition,Recovery HD 2 (40GB).
Unfortunately,Windows 7 went into HD1 and has filled up that partition, sharing space with OS-X 10.7.5.
How can I move Windows 7 to Recovery HD2 or to a 64GB flash drive and leave OS-X 10.7.5 in HD1? And make Windows bootable from Recovery HD2 or said flash drive?
I still have Parallels dmg file on my desktop along with the Windows 7 iso file.
    Thanks!

If you used Parallels to install Windows this has nothing to do with Boot Camp. Windows is just contained in a file not a partition. When you run Parallels you identify where to store the file.
You should probably visit the Prallels site and forums about this since it is their product you are asking about.

  • [Solved]Grub booting the wrong partition

Hello everyone and thank you for reading!
This is my first post on this forum (and my first step into arch) so appologies for any newbie symtoms (and bad language).
    My problem:
When I start my laptop (press the power button) my system go's into bios and then boots my HDD (that statement is a bit off I know). After that the system stops and grub rescue starts, saying something about a UUID not found (the UUID is nowhere to be found in my system but it could be one from my previous Ubuntu setup).
    My system:
An Acer Laptop with a Samsung SSD for OS(sda) and Seagate HDD for storage(sdb)
    a 3d gen i5
    glorious Nvidia optimus
some more stuff I think is not importend
    My attempted solutions:
    >Switch the boot-order and put my SSD on top.
My bios only lets me say "Boot from a disk (hdd and ssd)", "Boot from CD", "Network" ,etc.
    >Boot-repair
       Didn't work.
    >try setting this right in grub-rescue
Could work, but I get an error all the time saying "could not find "grub_real_boot_time"" when running "insmod normal".
    >wipe the entire HDD clean.
even with all the HDD partitions deleted, grub still pops up from out of nowhere.
    >remove the HDD
Yes this works the system boots in a blink of an eye.

  • HT5628 i did a mistake i chose wrong partition whlie installing windows

so it gives me an error massage " no bootable device- insert boot disk and press ant key : so i tried command-r ,, alt thing but nothing works what should i do ??

Reinstall Mac OS X. To do that, follow these steps:
    1. Hold Command, Option (Alt) and R keys while your computer is starting to start in OS X Recovery, and open Disk Utility.
    2. Choose your hard drive at the top of the sidebar, go to Erase tab and erase the drive.
    3. Close Disk Utility and reinstall OS X. After reinstalling OS X, install Windows again in Boot Camp. Read > http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/boot_camp_install-setup_10.8.pdf

  • Home Sharing on iPad gone wrong...please help!

    Hi there,
I recently found out about home sharing by a friend. So to save space on my iPad I simply download all my music and videos on my computer and then when I want to watch/listen I have the computer switched on and iTunes running and then it allows me to steam my content on my iPad - without downloading it and using up my 32GB of space. Its genius.
Except, I have downloaded many different series of a few TV Shows i.e. Suits, Geordie Shore and Revenge. But today when I click on the Home Sharing on my iPad everything is all jumbled up. There a mulitple pictures and wrong Season title and when I open to view the episodes its a completly different show.
For example when I open sharing - its shows Suits Season 3 (which doesn't exsist), the picture is the Season 2 picuture and when I open it - its Geordie Shore/Suits episodes all mixed up.
It's really hard to find what I am looking for and I am confused as to what I have done wrong. I tried refeshing it, turning it on/off and checking iTunes but it is not going back to normal.
Here's a pic to prove.... (bear in mind Suits season 3 doesn't exsist in the real world)

Ok, here was the rundown of my situation, and the solution:
I partitioned the disk through Bootcamp, tried to install Windows, and got to the point where it asks which partition to install on. It showed one with about 130GB, and that was ALL. So I backed out. Upon reboot, I tried to get back into the Mac OS by holding the Option key, and it wouldn't show me the option to go back - just the boot disk, and the Windows HDD (on which there was nothing yet, and which disappeared as an option on the next reboot).
In speaking to the support line, I formatted my hard drive re-installed, and we suspected the problem was due to the 10GB partition I created - apparently Windows XP needs 15GB to install itself. Maybe it just picked the wrong partition and screwed it up?
I tried the process again, same thing happened. I called the support line again, got someone different, and was informed of my real problem:
------I was using a Windows XP disk I had received with my PC when I bought it a few years ago (an OEM Windows XP disk)-------
Apparently you can't do that for some reason! I was told that my partitioning was ok, and it was the copy of Windows that was screwed up, and I would have to go buy a new version (which I'm not going to do).
Before trying Boot Camp, I had this exact copy of Windows installed through Parallels, and it worked fine - I just stupidly decided to make the switch to Boot Camp and all **** broke lose. Back to Parallels!

    Hi nicoczyz,
Welcome to the Support Communities!  The steps you have taken to troubleshoot the issue of not being able to create a Windows partition are good ones.  The resource below provides another possible scenario that may be the issue here.  It's not the exact error message as your screen shot and the article references Windows 8, but the troubleshooting steps are still relevant:
Boot Camp: Partition alert message when using Boot Camp Assistant - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203913
This symptom may occur if you have partitions on your startup drive in addition to the following:
    one OS X partition
    one Boot Camp partition
one OS X Recovery partition (normally not visible in Disk Utility)
If Boot Camp Assistant detects a Microsoft Reserved (MSR) or Windows Recovery partition on your hard drive, you may see this message.  The Boot Camp Assistant cannot continue until the extra partition is removed.
Microsoft Reserved and Windows Recovery partitions can be identified as unmounted partitions with the name "disk0s3" or "disk0s5" in Disk Utility. To remove these partitions, use OS X Disk Utility.
Important: Deleting the wrong partition can cause data loss. Be sure to back up both your OS X files and Windows files before attempting this procedure.
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    Click the Partition tab.
Look for an extra partition named “disk0s3" or “disk0s5”. Select this partition so it is highlighted.
Click the Remove Partition button ( - ).
Make sure the partition you selected is noted in the sheet that appears.
    Click Remove.
When Disk Utility finishes, close the Disk Utility window to quit the app. The Boot Camp Assistant can now be used to reinstall or update your existing Windows partition.
Set up a Windows partition on your Mac - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204009
Before you can install Windows your Mac, you need to create and then format a Windows partition.
Setting up a Windows partition is one of the steps for installing Windows on your Mac. Use Boot Camp Assistant to create the partition, then use the Windows installer to format it.Create the Windows partition
To create the Windows partition, open Boot Camp Assistant and follow the onscreen instructions. Boot Camp Assistant is in the Utilities folder of your Applications folder.
Use only Boot Camp Assistant to create the partition. If you partition with another app and then use Boot Camp Assistant, the drive with the partition could be erased.
Boot Camp Assistant creates the partition only if the drive is formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and doesn't already have a partition created by Boot Camp Assistant. If Boot Camp Assistant sees other partitions, it may warn you that the startup disk cannot be partitioned.
If you need help determining the best size of the partition, refer to your Windows documentation. For Windows 8, the partition should be at least 30 GB.
If Boot Camp Assistant says that verification failed, repair the drive using Disk Utility. If that doesn't help, back up your drive and reinstall OS X.
The drive you're partitioning must be an internal drive. If you have more than one internal drive and the drive you're partitioning is not in the first drive bay, remove the drives in the lower-numbered bays, then reinstall them after installing Windows. A Fusion Drive is treated as one drive, and the Windows partition is created on the disk drive instead of the flash drive (SSD).
    Format the Windows partition
Use the Windows installer to format the Windows partition that Boot Camp Assistant created. When you're asked where to install Windows, select the partition named "BOOTCAMP":
Then click Format to begin formatting the partition using the NTFS file system. If you're installing Windows 7 or Windows 8.0, you won't see the Format option until you click "Drive options (advanced)":
If the installer says that it couldn't create a new partition or locate an existing one, disconnect any Thunderbolt storage devices connected to your Mac. Reconnect them after installing Windows.
If you see “No Boot Disk Attached” when starting up your Mac, the Windows partition probably isn't formatted correctly. Remove the partition, then repeat the previous steps for creating and formatting the partition.
    Modify the Windows partition
Remove the partition, change its size, or change its name.
    Remove the partition
Use Boot Camp Assistant to safely remove Windows and the Windows partition from your Mac, restoring your startup drive to a single Mac partition. You may want to back up your information first, because removing the partition erases all of the data it contains.
    Open Boot Camp Assistant.
Select “Remove Windows 7 or later version," then click Continue.
    Do one of the following:
If your Mac has a single internal disk, click Restore.
If your Mac has multiple internal disks, select the Windows disk, select “Restore disk to a single OS X partition,” then click Continue.
Change the size of the partition
It's not possible to change the size of the partition after installing Windows, but you can remove the partition and create a new partition of the correct size. Don't try to resize your partition with Windows or a third-party app.Change the name of the partition
You can rename the Windows partition from within Windows. For instructions, refer to your Windows documentation.

  • What happens to Existing index after table partition and created with local index

    Hi guys,
desc part id  number, name  varchar2(100), salary  number
In an existing table  PART  i am  adding 1 more column DATASEQ NUMBER. i am asked to partition the table part based on dataseq.now the table is created with this logic
    create table part( id  number, name  varchar2(100), salary  number, DATASEQ  number) partition by list(dataseq) (partition PART_INITIAL  values (1));
Suggestionn required. since  the table is partitioned based on DATASEQ i am asked to add local index on dataseq. i have added local index to dataseq create index idx on part(dataseq) LOCAL; Now my question is  already there is existing index is for the column ID and salary.
    1)  IDX for  dataseq is created locally so that it will have partition on each partition on the main table. Please tell me what happens to the existing index on the column ID and salary.. will it again created in local?
    Please suggest
    S

    Hi,
first of all, in reality "partition a table" means create a new table a migrate existing data there (although theoretically you can use dbms_redefinition to partition an existing table -- however, it's just doing the same thing behind the scenes). This means that you also get to decide what to do with the indexes -- which indexes will be local, which will be global (you can also re-evaluate some of existing indexes and decide that they're not really needed).
Second of all, the choice of partitioning key looks odd. Partitioning is a data manageability technique more than anything else, so in order to benefit from it you need to find a good partitioning key. A recently added column named "data_seq" doesn't look like a good candidate. Can you provide more details about this column and why it was chosen as a partitioning key?
I suspect that whoever suggested this partitioning scheme is making a huge mistake. A non-partitioned table is much better in all aspects (including manageability and performance) than wrongly partitioned one.
    Best regards,
    Nikolay

  • Dual booting win 7 and arch: cannot install grub to partition

I have read the arch wiki page on dual booting and several other sources on line, but I am still struggling to get this to work.
I am trying to dual boot arch and windows 7 on my lenovo ideapad s205. the machine comes with windows 7 pre-installed.
I shrank the win 7 partition and added an extended partition with 3 logical partions for /boot, swap, and /.
I am able to install and run arch by installing grub to the mbr. when I do this, though, I cannot boot windows. (the windows section of grub menu.lst is uncommented and points toward hda0,0. I have tried hda 0,1 as well).
I have also tried to use the windows boot loader to load arch, as described in the arch wiki page on dual booting. The problem here is that, taking this approach, I should install grub to my /boot partition, but when I try to do this, the installer only allows me to install grub to sda or sdb (the usb stick).
I have read that grub should be able to boot linux from a logical partition. Is this so?
Is there something wrong with the arch installer that it is not giving me the option of installing to a partition rather than the mbr, or is this  a problem with my partition scheme, or something else?
I am tempted to remove lenovo's recovery system, but on the other hand, I have already needed to use it several times while monkeying around with installing arch.
    Thanks for any help.
    UPDATE:
I now have the laptop dual-booting win 7 and arch. My solution ( adapted from here: http://helms-deep.cable.nu/~rwh/blog/?p=177) was to:
    1. installed arch on the partitions I had created for it, but skipped the "install bootloader" stage.
    2. in win 7, I downloaded and installed EasyBCD and made an entry for arch in it. I checked the option to "Use EasyBCD's copy of GRUB"
    3. When I restarted, I got a grub error because the entry in grub's menu.lst was pointing at the wrong partitions for the kernel and root.
    4. So I went back into the arch live disk, mounted the boot partition and edited menu.lst.
Now when I start the laptop, the windows boot loader starts and I can choose between win  7 and arch. when I select arch, grub4dos starts and gives me the option to start arch. this is not particularly elegant (nor is it fast), so I think this solution is less than ideal, but it does work.
I'd be interestd in any thoughts about what went wrong and what a better solution would be.
    thanks.

Is this a typo in your post or how it was in menu.lst? Surely it should be hd0,0 and not hda0,0? The entry I have in my menu.lst is as follows:
    # (2) Windows
    title Windows
    rootnoverify (hd0,0)
    makeactive
    chainloader +1
    What was yours?
