Wrong RAM Size Detected with KT4 Ultra

I am using 2 Crucial PC2100 256 MB DDR Modules. Neither they nor the motherboard ever overclocked. Even I used them under auto settings. They were working fine as 512 MB after I first installed my system but I noticed today that the board detects installed memory as 384 MB instead of 512 MB. My LCD monitor can not display the full boot screen and I could only see the least significant 3 digits of memory. So I didn't notice when this problem occurred.
I wonder whether this is a known or reported issue.
Also, I read the posts about Crucial DDR RAMs and Radeon 9700 Pro and became desperate about my lovely MSI motherboard. When I had installed this board (it is my first MSI motherboard) I was very satisfied. Will my satisfaction continue?
Thanks for any help or comments.
Mustafa

Yes, you're wright.
One of the modules seams to have (a) problem(s) since it is recognized as 128 MB in both of the first two DDR slots.
I will order new memory modules to night.
Thank you very much.

  • Problem with KT4 Ultra and XP 2700

First excuse my bad english (i'm from Germany)!!
I have a heavy problem with my KT4 Ultra.
    First my system:
    AMD Athlon XP 2700
Mainboard: MSI KT4 Ultra (MS-6590) Bios vers. 1.1
    MSI Geforce 4 Ti 4200 64 Mb
    512 Mb DDR Ram Apacer Technology 512 MB 16x(32mx8)DDR-SDRAM PC2700U-2533-700(CL2.5 upto 167MHz)(CL2 upto 133MHz
    Sound : Onboard
    GlobalWIN CAK38 II Kupfer
    Powersupply: Levicom 420W
    Win XP SP1
    Now the problen:
When i turn the FSB in the Bios up to 166MHz
the system crashes on Windows startupscreen!!
I've turned the FSP clock down to 164 MHz and Windows starts. But when i runned 3DMark2001 it crashes back to desktop !!
Then i turned the FSB clock down to 159 MHz and the system runns stabile!!
    Now what i've already tried:
Turned down Ram timings and frequency (same prob.)
    No heatproblem (CPU at 118.f)
Had the same system exapt an XP1800 instead an XP2700 and no problems!!
Called the MSI hotline (Germany) and they told me to type the FSB manually in the Bios (insted of numblock +and -).  ?(
Still the same problem !!  ;(
Has anyone the same problem as i ???
    THX !!

    Hi,
    I would try other ram....
Or start from BIOS default settings and only change CPU-FSB....
    See what happens...

  • Serious problems with KT4 Ultra

    Hi,
I am having very serious issues with my KT4 Ultra board.  Before I go any further here are the specs:
KT4 Ultra w/ AMD Athlon XP 2100+ (not overclocked)
    512 MB PC3200 RAM
    BIOS V. 1.4
    40 Gig HDD ATA 100
    ATi Radeon 64 DDR Vivo
    PC Alert 4 Temps:
    System: 38*C
    CPU: 41*C
Apparently everything is within normal specs.  However, when I go to play a game like Half-Life my computer often spontaneously reboots itself.  I have tried changing/upgrading drivers for almost everything.
Another problem is my onboard sound.  It as of late now plays everything in a distorted way.  Drivers that I have tried to download for it come up with the message "VIA AC`97 NOT FOUND" Essentially the drivers from VIA dont even think my sound is there (oh but it is.)  I had to settle with windows update for this as nothing I can find on this website works.  Last but not least, sometimes when I am browsing the web or doing almost nothing, maybe chatting on IM or something, my comp freezes solid.  Nothing will work except the reset button.  These problems have just lately come about and they are very frustrating.  Any reply would be greatly appreciated.

Read my page on lock-ups and reboots as this can be many things.

  • PC doesnt start with KT4 Ultra

After building the KT4 Ultra into my PC it doesnt start, i can see only a black screen and all of the smart led at the back are red! I've already changed the CPU and checked everything twice, but it still doesnt work! (CPU = AMD XP 2100, RAM = 512MB 333 DDR)! HELP ME, What is wrong?

    Hi,
It could be a few things like:
CPU not cooled correctly and thus thermal CPU protection kicks in....
CMos bat clear jumper not set in the correct position, must be 1-2 to keep data....
Powersupply to little to start the system....

  • BG2 probs with KT4 Ultra

    Hello,
While installing Baldur's Gate 2 on my system, I get the following error:
"CRC Error: the file xxxxxxxx.xxx does not match the file in the Setup's .cab file. The medium you are installing from may be defective. Please contact your software vendor."
Underneath I get a prompt with "Abort", "Retry" and "Ignore" buttons. This error appears at several points during the installation process and in reference to several files.
I am running a dual-boot configuration with XP and 98. Under XP, pressing "Retry" makes the hard disk LED light up for a few seconds before displaying the error again. Pressing "Ignore" makes installation continue, until at some point (not always the same) the system reboots itself. Under 98 pressing retry sometimes allows the installation to continue, however it still stops and displays the error message again when it gets to the next problematic file.
I have ruled out the likelyhood that my installation disks are indeed corrupted by trying to install the game on a friend's computer right after the first time I got the error, and it worked fine. I have also installed the game on both of the two different computers I used over the summer (one was running XP, the other 98, both worked fine). I have tried with both the originals and the backup disks and I get the problem both times. Also, the game used to work on my current computer as well, until a severe crash forced me to reinstall Windows. When the error occured, I assumed it was due to a faulty OS installation and therefore reformated and reinstalled Windows yet again, and it still happened!
I'm running an Athlon XP 1700+ (not oc'ed) on an MSI KT4-Ultra motherboard, with 256MB RAM and a Radeon 9000. Windows XP has all the latest updates and all the latest hardware drivers installed, 98 has all the latest hardware drivers but no updates. Micro$oft's knowledgebase claims that the problem is caused by a third-party device driver, and I tend to believe it, as the same game installed from the same disks worked fine on the three other computers I installed it on, as well as on mine the first time round. The only thing in which my current configuration differs from my previous configuration and the configuration I'm running on now is that the first time I installed WIndows on this computer I was NOT using all the very latest drivers as I hadn't been connected to the net yet. Therefore, if it really is a driver, my guess is it would be MSI's motherboard driver.
    My issues are:
    why does this happen?
how do I determine whether it is MSI's driver causing it?
what does this CRC error message thing mean?
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks,
    Michael

Do an EXACT search (quoted) of the error at google - sometimes that pulls up the result (had for me MANY times with install issues)

  • Help with KT4 Ultra and 5.1 surround

    Hi there
Ok I am new to this PC building game and have to be honest I don't know all the technical jargon so if anyone can help, please speak in good old common English, I is a bit slow on the uptake.
    The problem:
I have built a PC for the old man using the KT4 Ultra MS-6590 motherboard. It came with a two additional brackets, a blue tooth USB thingy, a 5.1 bracket and MSIDVD5.1ch DVD. Both brackets take up a PCI space but plug direct into the motherboard not the pci slot (you probably already know this).
Now i haven't installed these as I was unsure how to use them. The 5.1 adapter/bracket only has a two speaker jacks, and these run two types of speakers (which ones I can't remember right now). So if I was to pug it in, where do all the other speakers plug in to the system and am I supposed to buy a set of 5.1 speakers that are especially designed to use this type of jack configuration? Any recommendations on speaker packages are very welcome. I also take it that the DVD that came with it will help me set everything up yeh? I haven't tried it as I didn't install the bracket.
Ok next up, this Bluetooth bracket thing? So what's that all about? If I plug it in, will it give me bluetooth support or do I need to buy something else to make that work? Personally I would be surprised if I plugged it in and it worked.
Now if you are wondering what brackets I am talking about, you can see them here on the MSI site under the Socket A motherboard section, there are images right at the bottom.
Cheers for any help you can give, like I say, I am new to all this and I guess we all have to learn somewhere right? So please go easy on me.
    Cheers Jordy

    Cheers for that,
I read the KT4 unofficial Fact and got a little confused with what it was saying about bluetooth. I take it that it is in fact not bluetooth and just two extra USB ports? I could be wrong, like I say I get confused with all this techno babble.
Ok so when I installed the drivers and everything else for the motherboard, was c-media mixer installed with it, or is it on the MSIDVD5.1ch DVD?
That seem's easy enough to follow though cheers.
do you recommend any particualar speaker systems to make connection simple and easy? If you think I am dim, you should see the old man navigate the net (crap he is bound to read this).
Cheers for your help and anymore light you can shed on the bluetooth bracket.
    Cheers again Jordy  8)

  • The Final Episode with KT4 Ultra

Yesterday my KT4 Ultra had its last moments. A circuit near system fan connector blew up with fire and smoke. There was no overclocking, properly installed CPU, the latest BIOS was installed and the latest drivers etc. Nothing special...
    It is time for conclusion:
    - random reboots with 133 MHz FSB
    - MemTest showing different results in all 3 memory slots
    - CoolerXP crashes WinXP
    - burnt circuit
= unfinished product. MSI has rushed getting this MB to markets without proper testing and finetuning.
When I get a new MB from RMA I will change it to another brand.
ThankYou all for your help and advices!
    Bye!

Yes I seem to be having problems with the MSI KT4 Ultra board also (Model# MS-6590). I just got off the phone with MSI Technical Support and as we tried to troubleshoot, we realized the board was shipped with the CMOS jumper on pins 2-3. He explained that powering the board ON while in this setting would cause board damage. Well, then why would they ship it like this!!!!!!!!!! Slightly irritated.
    My specs are:
        AMD 2000+
        (1) DDR 400 (PC3200 512mb)
        GeForce4 Ti4200 128mb 8x AGP
I tried the CMOS jumper on pins 1-2, where they should be for normal 'posting' and when I hit the power on button I get NOTHING. What do you guys think? Board is damaged?

  • Is FSB overclocking above 175 MHz possible with KT4 Ultra?

I would like to squeeze a few extra MHz out of my AMD XP2600+ (without unlocking or other hardmods that cost money if they fail...). I have upped the FSB to 175 successfully, which gives me just above 2200 MHz CPU speed as reported of Motherboard Monitor. But when I go above that, it crashes. Upping the voltage from auto (1.65 on my system) does not seem to help. A guy on an overclocking board suggested that it's because it stops in the AGP/PCI slot since there is no lock of those speeds. Is this possible in any way, or are there any other dirty tricks to use so I can get more speed out of this?
    Thanks a lot in advance!

thanks!!!yes, it really seems to be a power source issue...
i am using a powerline 450W power source, and the smart doctor utility form asus reported a reading of red marked warning 3.12 volts intead of 3.3 volts, also i tested the 3.3 rails using a multimeter while the system was on and capture drivers under conflict and it reported a 3.25 voltage.....i opened the power source's box and clean its dust, and so, the problem is not happening anymore!!.anyway smart doctors is reporting a 3.15 voltage instead of 3.3 (not in red or under warning message)and the multimeter is reporting 3.27. but everything is working fine: capture and tv out fetures while using the processor as an athlon 2800+ for the first time since i bought the motherboard........
the 5 volts line is reported by the multimeter with 4.95 volts after and before the problem was happening, same with smart doctor.
    the hardware i used was:
    -two MSI kt4 ultra boards
    -kt4A
-an intel motherboard which i don't remember its brand, using dimm pc 133 memory(using anoter power supply)
    -asus v8460 for all boards
-same ddr memory for all msi motherboards
since the voltage is still not 3.3 volts reported, even if the entire video card is working fine, and i only cleaned the box, and didn't change anything to its structure, maybe the problem could happen again, i guess i should buy another power source then.
    i am very thankful
    Andres.
PD: i see that a lot of people is having this kind of problem through the forum and maybe its due to this voltage stuff too....maybe it'd be a good idea if a sticky thread  is posted repoting this stuff i believe. (if it hasn't yet of course)

  • No Sound with KT4 Ultra - FISR -- HELP!

    hey
I got a KT4 Ultra - FISR along with and XP 2400 and other goodies for christmas. I put the machine together and installed 98se, and all of the included drivers the came on the MSI Utilities disk. Everything was working perfectly with it (got 11752 on 3dmark 2001, is that a decent score?) anyways everything was cool except the on-board c-media sound was not working at all.  ?(  I have 2 speakers w/ sub and i have them plugged into the line out spot in the mobo. I have turned the sound on in my BIOS and messed with all the sound settings in windows and still i get no sound at all. I even unplugged the bracket that came with it for surround because i saw it could possibly cause some problems. I then checked all my connections and still no sound.  X( I was woundering if there are any other settings or jumpers that i need to set for my sound to work. Any additional information on how to get my sound to work would be greately appreciated. My system specs are below. Thankz

  • Instability with KT4 Ultra & 3000+

Hey all, I was wondering if you guys could help me out.
I just bought a Athlon XP 3000+ (333 FSB), and I cannot run it at any higher of a FSB than 100.  I have a volcano + SLK900 hsf, and am running around 20 degrees C at idle.  Anytime I place a load on the processor, it dies...  I have the newest KT4 Ultra bios (1.4).  Please let me know if you guys have any ideas!
Also, before I got the 3000+, I had a 2100+, and my ram would perform horribly (around PC2100 speeds), any ideas on that would also be helpful.
    Specs:
    Motherboard: KT4 Ultra (6590)
    Processor: XP 3000+ (Barton Core)
RAM: 1 gig Corsair XMS PC3200
    PSU: 500 Watt
    Video: GeForce 4 Ti 4600
    Sound: SB Live Platinum 5.1
Thanks for any help that can be given!

by strain I mean something that makes the computer work hard (ie, benchmark like Sandrasoft/3dMark, or a newer game).  I notice it dies because the whole computer shuts powers down.
Also, I ran PC Alert 4 on my machine, and it says that my 3.3 voltage is low (2.94 or so).  Would this kill it? I ask because its that low even when the FSB is 100 (the computer is rock stable at 100).  Would there be any way to further test to see if its the power supply thats having problems?
Finally, I ran memtest86 on my ram, and it passed every test at every speed.

  • IBook Registers wrong RAM size

    Hello,
I have a weird issue with my iBook - I have the biult in 256mb ram and I installed a Crucial 1 gig stick in the other slot. It worked like a charm for a long time but recently I decided to run system profiles and it is showing that I have
    "Memory: 768 MB"
    What could be causing this?

Steven, I have not run the hardware test as I don't have a CD handy. I see there is memtest and techtool lite so I'll these.
Crucial will swap my memory free of charge so I'll do that first. It'll leave me with 256RAM for a little while which will be painful

  • About FSB 166 with KT4 Ultra

    I use XP1700+, DDR 256MB PC2700, 11*133
what if i increase fsb to 166Mhz and reduce mutiplier to 8.5 that will run at 1411 Mhz
Do the PCI bus will automatically adjust to the original?
(My friend told me that at 66,100,133,166 bus this MB wil adjust to the 33PCI and 66AGP)
    Thanks again

Yes, on my KT4 I can up the FSB to 166, but the mutliplier needs to be reduced of course. Gives me a pretty good boost, and has been stable with good temps for almost a month.

  • Which RAM is compatible with Sun Ultra 40-M2?

I currently have 4GB but would like to add another 4GB.
Can I go non-OEM and if so, what's the list of compatible RAM.

Google is your friend. newegg and wiredzone carried this item. I noticed that the new 8GB RAM are coming down in price (Kingston KVR667D2D4P5K2/8G) for about US$180-190. Those module are available with a lot of suppliers. But I never tested the 8GB module. So try on your own risk.
