Wrong ratios 16:9 to 4:3

I recorded some movies on a Sony DVD203 in 16:9 format. I played them back into iMove 08 and 06 by using the svideo through a Canopus ADV110 video to firewire converter. Everything came through okay except the display in imove08 is set to 16:9 and the picture is shown as 4:3 with pillars on the sides and the people are tall and skinny. On imove 06 I cant get a 16:9 option anywhere. If I plug the camera into an HDTV with 16:9 ratio through an s-video jack the playback is perfect. Anybody got any ideas?

Could you explain to someone who has spen over 4 hours wint iMove 06 and cant' get it to do anything at all. I can make iMove 08 work If I could get video into it.
While I also own a Canopus unit (ADVC300) to move video content (TV, Satellite, VHS, etc.) content to my computer, I would normally use the following work flow for the Sony DCR-DVD203:
1) Connect the camcorder to your computer using the USB cable
2) Move the VOB ("muxed" audio/video content) files to your computer hard drive
3) Use a software application to convert the VOB files to iMovie compatible compression formats
4) Import the converted files into iMovie
Your only real problem is deciding which application to use and which compression format to use. My personal choice would be MPEG Streamclip (free) here since it has a number of features which most users will eventually need/grow into over time. It does, however requiter the purchase/installation of the the QT MPEG-2 Playback component ($19.99). This approach will allow your to convert your VOBs to DV files which will be properly flagged as 16:9 content and can be imported/edited by any version of iMovie.
If you are more interested in ease of conversion and don't care so much about the output format as long as it is iMovie '08 compatible, then you could try iSquint (free). It is much easier to use. Simply drag and drop the copied VOB files to the work area and press the "Start" button to convert one or more files to MPEG-4/AAC files which can then be imported to iMovie '08. Once you have gained familiarity with the application you can switch to H.264/AAC compression format and/or increase the video data rate to improve quality somewhat. This program does not require purchase and installation of the QT MPEG-2 Playback component but has fewer features.

  • Imported clip appears in wrong ratio

I recorded from tv to a hard drive recorder, edited down to 3mins from 8hrs, put it on dvd to import into iMovieHD 5.0.2 to edit it further. Before importing to iMovie, I converted it to MP4 using Handbrake. The clip imports but is stretched tall and narrow, sound is fine. Can anyone tell me how to change the ratio or where I've gone wrong. Thanks

TV broadcasts are 4:3 (often letterboxed with black bands top and bottom).
You should have ripped the DVD to "DV". DV-NTSC in northern Amerika and Japan. DV-PAL in the rest of the world (with a few exceptions).
You should have created a DV project in iMovie (not DV-Widescreen).
Now, if you recording isn't a "normal" TV broadcast, but digital 16:9, the you should have converted to DV-widescreen and created a DV-Widescreen project in iMovie. (PAL vs NTSC as above.)

  • Wrong ratio of video

    Hello,
Can someone please explain to me how to play podcast in the right ratio? The video window for my podcast is distorted (elongated/stretched up) and I thought I would be able to change it by clicking on 'video size' in the Menu/View but this is greyed out so I can't click on it.
    Thanks

I have precisely the same problem. In the past (over the last year or less) I have used Perian to fix iTunes' incorrect display of video. The video has come from EyeTV export via Turbo.264 encoding but the latest update of iTunes (8.0.2) has "restored the problem". I have tried to reinstall Perian, but I'm not sure if I managed to fully remove it first. When "Remove Perian" is selected from the Perian Preference Pane, it doesn't fully remove it. The Perian Preference Pane remains......
Hopefully, a Perian update might solve this once more.....

  • Wrong ratio on Ipad

I need some help, I'm making an app for Ipad and are going to add some video clips, before adding them to Indesign the video is 720X576 16:9, but when imported and viewed on the Ipad the video is square pixels ... How can I fix this?

Ok, top image are from my Ipad and bottom from my computer. The video has the right aspect ratio on the computer, wich is 720X576 16:9. I'm placing the video in Indesign, then previewing it in folio preview or exporting it to my Ipad, and get square pixels ratio ...

  • Wrong ratio

I am having a problem with aspect ratio coming out 4:3 when it should be 16:9. I shot my video on a hdr-fx1 which says it should come oout 16:9, and everything in fcp is 16:9 but when I render it out it is 4:3.
I must be missing a setting some were but I cant seem to find it. help...

    Yep,
I find this happening in Compressor.
I am totally new to HDV (but not to FC or to DVDStudio).
What I did find is that if you export from FC as a QT reference movie you can put that straight into DVDStudio... and it keeps its 16:9.
    But,
It sure takes up a lot of space!

  • Aspect ratio of iPad mirror is not 4:3 when mirrored with Apple TV

Hi Everyone - I have just bought an Apple TV 3 and installed the device yesterday. I am using an LG HDTV and an iPad3. Everything works fine except one thing: When I mirror my iPad in landscape on the TV it appears with a wrong aspect ratio. This means I am NOT seeing a 4:3 picture of my iPad content on the screen, it rather looks like a 1:1 ratio. So the picture is "pressed together" from the left and the right. Any ideas how to solve the problem?
Before you answer - I am not talking about the black bars that appear when you mirror the 4:3 iPad on a 16:9 TV screen. This is not my problem and I know that black bars will appear eventually. I just do not get the proper aspect ratio of the iPad 4:3 on the TV screen - it rather appears as a square on the screen. This is only when I select mirroring - using airplay to see movies, youtube etc work perfectly fine.
Thanks very much for the help.

I have now reset my TV but unfortunately the problem remains. I also do not have the possibility to set the horizontal / vertical stretch of the TV when the input signal is via HDMI - so also no option.
I could actually live with the wrong ratio presentation when mirroring the iPad.
What I find really annoying is that my photos do not scale properly. When I start a slideshow on Aple TV from the iPad, the photos, which have been taken in a 2:3 aspect ratio, do not come up properly on the TV screen. They are pressed together from the sides, so people are too thin (well - some may like it but that is a different topic ).
Apple TV works totally fine with all other applications, ie YouTube videos. These are presented perfectly! This is why I think it has something to do with how photos are sent to Apple TV - this must be different from videos and maybe somewhere there is the reason.
If you have any other ideas I would appreciate your help. Thanks

  • Cannot Stream Video from iPad on AppleTV - Media Server Apps via Airplay

    Hi,
Need help on this one.  Am using iPad 4th gen - Apple TV 3rd Gen and iPhone 4S. (all latest firmware)
Last week was streaming video via Airplay using GoodPlayer and ArkMC apps on iPad to stream from my NAS (WD MyBookLive) via DNLA media server to Apple TV - Worked Amazing
    Upgraded firmware on appleTV.
I can no longer stream via Airplay from these apps - Airplay Icon appears - I can Select the Apple TV device for airplay (Checked - icon is blue). But no image on apple TV - video image stays on device.
Full reboot of both AppleTV and iPad.
Other software using server type setup (ex.:EMIT app) work perfectly and streaming directly from video on iPad works perfectly. (need to turn on the server on the computer though) or airplay enabled web sites and/or apps seem to work well also.
Mirroring works but the video is not full screen and wrong ratio.
Any clues ? I've lost this one.
    Thanks

Apparently what is happening, and this was brought up in another thread, and what I suspected was happening as well, is that the iPhone/iPad/iPod touch is not streaming the video itself directly to the AppleTV (it might be streaming it if it's audio only, haven't confirmed). What it's apparently doing is, is telling the AppleTV2 to download the video and play it on its own, starting with xx:xx timestamp directly from youtube or your iTunes library. This is why it's only working with your iTunes library or the built-in YouTube app. And also why it wouldn't work with the camera roll, because it isn't streaming directly from the iPhone. So it's not exactly what we were originally thinking or expecting.

  • Resolution of extended display

When connect my macbook pro to a 24" display by mini-didplay-2-vga cable, I can set the resolution to 1920x1080. But when connect it to a TV by the same cable set, the highest resolution can only be 1280x1024. Wrong ratio and wrong resolution.
While connect this TV by t410s by vga, the resolution can be as high as 1920x1080.
Does any one know how to solve this problem?
    Thanks for the help!

While connect this TV by t410s by vga...
    What does this mean?

  • What size, resolution, color space and bit do I use for a book?

What size, resolution, and color space do I use for a iPhoto book?

At least 150 DPI - actually pixel requirements depend on the print image size (pring image size * 150 will give you the minimum pixel size you need) - size is determined by the book size and theme and page layout you select - color space should be sRGB - minimal editing and using iPhoto for editing produces the best results - for more information see this article
If a photo is the wrong ratio and you can not crop to work in most themes you can right click on the photo and fit to frame

  • Models Comp Card Layout

Yes I am new to Photoshop.  Perhaps these might be dumb questions.  If you are easily offended by questions of a "rookie nature" please feel free the stop reading now and save yourself the aggravation.  If you are forging ahead, "Thank You So Much!"
I am attempting to make a Model's Comp Card.  The layout size is 8.5 X 5.5.  One picture on the front and two on the back.  Although I have a template to plug the pictures into, I find that the pictures are not fitting into the slots properly.  When I attempt to resize them I find that the proportions are off (too wide, too tall for the space) -------------This is problem #1
So now I am going to discard the template and just plug the pictures into a clean, new white background in Photoshop CC.  I open a new file and change the page orientation to horizontal.
And is it possible to have the page orientation horizontal while keeping the imported pictures vertical?  Can these two functions be separate?
How can I be sure that the actual size of the page will be 8.5 X 5.5 when it is printed out?
FYI I am using Photoshop CC and I am on a PC.
    Thanks
ohhhhhhhhhh! I GET how to make sure paper size is 8.5 X 5.5. I just figured that one out!

I am glad you figured out page sizes. However since this for beginners, we must try to include answers to all questions to other new users will learn.
When starting out there are two ways to get your document size. The first is the new document, File>New then in the new dialog box you pick what medium you will be designing for such as the web, print, video and so on.
Then you can either pick from a preset size or type in the height, width and resolution in the appropriate boxes - The height and width values can be pixels, inches, centimeters, and I think pica's. (don't recall sorry) The ppi or resolution value is only important for print when you are using a physical size for width and height. The two together determine the pixel dimensions. Otherwise typing in pixel values, you can ignore the ppi unless you will be printing. The pixel values divided by the ppi will tell you what the physical print size will be.
    ex.
    inches x ppi = pixels
    pixels / ppi = inches
OK, that's the first way. You can also get the document size from a document. File>Open the document window will now have the same size as the image you loaded.
Now lets deal with wrong ratio.
A ratio is the width to height values - If both width and height are same, this is a square ratio or 1:1
That is as detailed as I will get for now, as it can get overly complicated and out of scope for this thread, plus it pushes my comfort level a bit. (don't tell any one)
OK, If the image is too wide for your use or too high, it could be said the ratio is not correct as it does not match your needs.
So you have two options, you can scale an image, which may be needed anyways just to get one side to match. Make sure when you scale an image you hold down the shift key to constrain the scaling otherwise you will distort your image.
    To scale an image-
Select the layer the image is on in the layers panel
Now on the keyboard press ctrl-t for windows or cmd-t on a mac. This will put you in transform mode.
Place the cursor over a small square in one of the four corners of your image. You will see the cursor change shape.
Hold down your mouse button and the shift key then drag away from the image to scale up or drag towards the image to scale down.
When you are satisfied you can press the enter or return key on the keyboard or press the large checkmark in the top tool bar.
To rotate an image you would take the same steps however you would place the cursor outside one of the four corners and drag sideways.
Ok, lets say one side fits and the other side is still too large - By the way that would be preferable than having one side too small, it is easier to remove data than to add it.
At this point to remove data to make the other side smaller, you would use the crop tool found in the toolbar on the left side. You can either type in the size you need in the top tool bar or drag the crop tool across the image until it is the right size. Finally you could just leave the default crop as is then move each side inward until it fits size you want. Basically there is three ways to use the crop tool and it is up to you to decide what works best for you.
Note: The crop tool affects the entire document. - You can save this image after it is cropped then place this file into another document.
Another option is that you could use the rectangle selection tool and drag out the size you need or type in the top tool bar. Then Select Layer>Layer Mask>Reveal Selection. This will create a mask based on the selection you made and hide anything out side of that selection for that layer. (This is layer based where as crop is document based)
A hidden tip: You can drag the crop tool outward to add canvas space.
And finally vertical vs horizontal images vs the canvas.
The document can be either horizontal or vertical by reversing the height and the width in the new dialog box, by changing the two values in the Image>Image Size dialog box, by adding space to the canvas in the Image>Canvas Size dialog box, or by using the crop tool.
Whereas the image is layer based so transforms to the rescue. Same as scaling.  Don't forget to look at the top tool bar, those values can be handy. You can right click to choose a different dimension type. (You can also type in the dimension ex. let say it is in percentages and you want inches just type the value and the abbreviation like this 2in or 45px)
Remember masks that is the layer based version of cropping.
Good luck and any more questions ask...

  • DV PAL widescreen changing to stretched 'regular' size screen

Sorry if the topic title is somewhat confusing I'll explain more clearly here.
I have uncompressed AVI footage that is PAL DV widescreen.
    Width 720 pixels
    Height 576 pixels
I take my footage into After effects CS and the footage already looks 'regular size' or pan and scan size I.E Not letterboxed.
I try a blank render (No effects) and playback the footage, it looks pan and scan. I right click properties and it gives me the aspect ratio for widescreen, but it clearly isn't.
I've imported it back in to Vegas and it clearly is the wrong ratio.
Why is after effects doing this?
I select 'new composition' and make sure it is on the option for PAL DV widescreen 720*576
Any help would be greatly apreciated.

Checked both, but still no luck.
The first pic is what it looks like coming out of After effects, the second pic is how it looks in vegas and how it should look in media player etc.
I can't use the After effects render in a movie as it switches from the top pic to the bottom and back and forth every time I want to do an effect.
If done as you suggested and even in the info box at the top left where you hilight footage, composition etc, it says W 720 x H 576.
I've managed to change the ratio in the preview/comp window and it looks how it should, but the final render is the problem now.
I've checked the rendering options and it says the same there. Still no joy.
    *****EDIT**********
O.K it looks like it might be vegas having the issues. It's screwing my aspect ratio about and fudging around the pixel size and then not doing a correct render out.
If I have any more problems I'll post back.
    Cheers

"Mini-display" suggests you have a newer MBP than the ones covered in this forum. The older models have DVI-out and less-capable video chipsets. Suggest you ask in the forum from the newer MBP (LAte 2008 and newer) here:

  • External Monitor Aspect Ratio Looks Wrong

I'm having trouble using my TV as another monitor with my new MacBook Pro. I don't really care whether it is mirrored or as a second monitor, but no matter what I do I can't get the aspect ratios right. I want to play videos on my TV, but when I put them fullscreen there, no matter what aspect ratio I've chosen, it ends up cropping the screen, as if instead of actually changing the aspect ratio, it has just blown up the screen from the wrong aspect ratio and let the edges get cut off. The (oldish) TV has a 1024x768 ratio, my laptop a 1280x800. They're connected by VGA cable. When I just leave them like that as separate monitors, the TV acts as if it's the same size as the computer and ends up cutting off the bottom and left side of the window. I've tried setting my laptop to 1024x768 as well as having them as separate monitors, and that changes the laptop screen, but still when I fullscreen a video it's cropped instead of resized, now on both laptop and TV. When I mirror them my laptop gets all stretched looking, presumably because it's taking on the TV's aspect ratio and then just stretching it out. It's like the only way it knows how to handle anything properly is if it's in its native 1280x800 setting. My old PC handles this without a problem (I think it ends up putting black bars top and bottom on my TV to make the ratio work for videos that aren't fullscreen, and in any case it doesn't do any of the weird cropping), and I thought Macs were for graphics people!

    Hi
    > Should I install the external monitor samsung driver (I do have the disc) or might it upset the Toshiba's own screen...
First of all the graphic driver is necessary and important to run and to use the graphic card with full performance and NOT the external monitor!!!
I'm sure that the external monitor software was not designed to run the graphic card but to enable and to control some external monitor options.
Anyway, you could try to install this delivered software but please understand that this software will not replace the installed Toshiba nVidia graphic driver.

  • Aspect ratio in preview & export wrong

I have QT.movies shot @ HDV 1080i60, 1440 x 1080. I just read an article in VideoMaker Magazine to take advantage of Apple ProRes 422, you can take your HDV video into Compressor and render to Apple ProRes files.
When I preview the .mov before I render it or even assign it an Apple Preset setting the aspect ratio is wrong and so is the rendered file.
Why can't I bring in a simple QT .mov and view it and output correctly from Compressor?

For future referernce: in order to view anamorphic/non-square material correctly the Preview window of Compressor 3, you need to (counterintuitively) uncheck the Square pixels toggle (available in the center drop-down).
However, that said, if you're transcoding to ProRes422, make sure you've adjusted the Frame Size setting in the Geometry pane of the Inspector. By default, the ProRes422 preset converts material to 100% of source but, since ProRes is a square pixel codec (and HDV is not) that won't work for you. So, adjust the Frame Size value to 1902x1080 and your transcodes should be all good...

  • Wrong aspect ratio in Survey view

I selected 3 photos and went to the Survey view. Of these photos, 2 were full frame, and 1 was cropped so it has a wider aspect ratio than the full-frame pictures. Survey view showed all 3 the same size, so the cropped one was stretched vertically and looked horrible. What's up with that?
...Lightroom 1.1 on Mac OS X.

Thanks for the suggestion. That's a good tip to keep in my back pocket.
I don't think this is what happened here though -- the preview image looks correct at all other views in Library mode (grid thumbnail, loupe view, and compare view are all correct; it's only screwed up in survey view). No amount of switching between views, or invoking Library->Preview->Render (1:1 or standard or telling it to discard and rerender) fixes the one in survey.
It also turns out this is reproducible on demand, if I go from survey view on an uncropped photo straight to develop, crop, and return to survey: if I select 3 images, hit N to enter survey mode, click one of the images, hit R to go to Develop and enter crop mode, crop the image, hit E to return to Library, hit N to go back to Survey... the photo I just cropped has the wrong aspect ratio.
If I quit Lightroom and reinvoke it, that corrects the bogus shape of the image in Survey view. I haven't yet found any other way to correct the shape.
As an added bonus, if I go back and forth between Survey and Crop (using R from the Survey page), Lightroom will pretty quicly get in a state where it's stuck in Library and any attempt to go to Develop will say "unable to switch modules", and I have to quit and restart Lr before I can use Develop.
