Wrong spelling dictionary

I received a Word document in my email that I opened in Pages and saved a new copy.
I noticed that there were multiple red lines under words that I knew were spelled correctly. I right clicked on the words to see a number of suggestions that seem to be Spanish (I don't actually speak Spanish, so I cannot be 100% correct, but it's a foreign language nonetheless).
None of my other Pages documents are like this--only this one. I have no idea how to switch dictionaries. Can anyone help?

Pages 09 won't let me change spelling dictionary from French to English!
I'm writing a syllabus for class and the spellcheck is stuck in French - for the life of me I can't change it.  The dictionary menu doesn't show up ANYWHERE.  Is this a bug?  is there a fix?

You really don't see Inspector > Text > More > Language with a choice of dictionaries?

  • How do I change my spelling dictionary?

I have accidentally clicked on "add to dictionary" when trying to correct a few misspelled words while using firefox.
    So I went to finder/library/application support/firefox/profiles/persdict.dat
There I found a list of the words. So I deleted the misspelled words. Clicked "save" and exited.
However, next time I open finder and open the persdict/dat file again, those stupid words are still in there!!
So how do I edit my "spelling word bank" that has the misspelled words? Thanks.

    Hi,
Strange, should work. Did you close Firefox before editing the file?

  • Using Custom Spelling Dictionary?

I'm doing some serious copy editing for a professional document. And I have lots of specific terminology. Does anyone know if a way to add a custom dictionary to Pages?
Word lets you add any number of custom dictionaries, so I was able to add my Stedman's to the list, and I don't have to manually add all of the medical terms.
(and I find it amusing that my US English choice still seems to give me French word preferences!)
    Thanks!

It's way simpler than that. Words are stored in a text file at ~/Library/Spelling/en

  • Spell Checker does not replace the wrong spelling with the right one

I have a GWT application which has a textarea. When the user types a wrong spelling, it gets underlined in red. When the user right clicks on the wrong spelling, the popup menu provides some suggestions; The user clicks on one of the suggestions but the wrong spelling does not get replaced.
The javascript console contains the following error:

Please let me know how to fix this problem.

If this is while using Firefox, try to Firefox in Safe Mode to see if the
    problem still happens.
'''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.

    * On Windows you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * On Mac you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''option''' key while starting Firefox.
    * On Linux you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by quitting Firefox and then going to your Terminal and running: firefox -safe-mode (you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
    * Or open the Help menu and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.

  • Spelling dictionary:  where is the list of learned words?

In MS Office all the technical words I have added to the spelling dictionary are stored in a simple text file. I now want to paste them into the Mac dictionary. Please can someone tell me if there is a text list of learned words and where it is stored.
I will be really annoyed if I have to add each of the hundreds of words manually.
    Thanks,

Again, I'm in Leo right now, but spent the last hour searching for it/them.. no soap.
So I added some real long names to it, they showed up in en.
I made a new file in Text Edit with these words...
    qwerty
    asdfgh
    zxcvbnm
Changing one slightly to zxcvbnmkl and highlighting it in Text Edit, Right Click>Spelling & Grammer>Show Spelling & Grammer... it shows that zxcvbnmk is the proper spelling... en was not changed, as it was with the real long names!?
zxcvbnmk does not exist in the content of any file, I have not found a Folder or File that was changed on those last three words!?
I don't know how long of list you have, but a possible workaround...
Load/paste them all into Text Edit, Select All>Right Click>Spelling & Grammer>Show Spelling & Grammer... Click Learn repetedly... I did a list of a hungred or so this way.
Assuming Tiger has the same capability I'd guess.

  • Safari on Windows. How does one change default spelling dictionary?

How does one change the default spelling dictionary for Safari on Windows? For the Mac, it changes in response to the default locale, but on Windows, it just sets to American English and you cannot change it anywhere I can see. All my locale information in Windows is set to UK English.
In fact on some websites, like this one, the spelling checker seems to be disabled! I'm on Windows 7 64-bit, BTW, running Safari 5.1.7

I think I just found the answer (though I don't know why the interface is buried this way). Find a word that the American spell check is flagging, right click on it, select Spelling and Grammar, and then select Show Spelling and Grammar. Make sure that the language listed at the bottom says British English (not my choice of what to call it, so please don't blame the messenger).

  • IWeb and spelling dictionary

I use a lot of technical terms which I tell the dictionary to learn. It works fine the rest of that session. Next time I start up iWeb, it hasn't remembered any of the "learned" words.

Can you explain the alternate language dictionaries
and how you get access to them or switch between
    them?
They are accessed via Edit > Spelling > Spelling > Dictionary.
Also what format do they take? Is it possible to edit
    and build them yourself?
I am mainly interested in German, Italian, Spanish,
Serbo-Croatian and Mandarin/Cantonese. But the more
    the merrier s:-)
For spellchecking dictionaries beyond those provided by Apple, use CocoaSpell or other options mentioned here. I've not heard of anyone trying to make their own.

  • Version 31.0 refuses to install spelling dictionary

New installs or profiles of Firefox 31.0 refuse to install the spelling dictionary Nederlands with: "Not available for Firefox 31.0", which is silly because the dictionary in question is working just fine in existing versions of Firefox (where this spelling dictionary was installed earlier) that have been updated to 31.0 .
How do I get Firefox to install the dictionary anyway/? I have this problem with a new install on my laptop (Ubuntu Linux) and a new profile on my PC (Slackware Linux).

Just click that grayed "Add to Firefox" button and click "Install Anyway".

  • Edit OSX Spelling dictionary - can't delete words

How do I delete an word from the OSX spelling dictionary? Some words in my dictionary do not conform to the latest “Gaelic Orthographic Conventions - 2005” (See www.sqa.org.uk). I can add correct version words, but I want to get rid of the old version.
I have read the Mac Help article "Using advanced spell-checking options": which says “If you accidentally add a mis-spelled word to the dictionary, type the mis-spelling in the Spelling dialogue, and click Forget”
Unfortunately this does not help. The old word is not removed. Is there a file I can edit in some other way?

Sam makes a good point.  If there is something you don't like about the Apple dictionary, you can use others, either from the internal supply or by downloading from this site:

  • Dodgy add-on - French spelling dictionary - bloody nuisance - why?

Down-loaded French spelling dictionary ADD-ON from Mozilla. Got no dictionary but a TRICOLOR attached to my Book-marks tool-bar, which I can't remove. Clicking on the Tricolor links to a Blog about physiotherapy.
NOT GOOD & if it can't be removed I shall have to switch to a different Browser.
    John Macdiarmid

That's quite strange. What's the exact link to the add-on in question? See the following article for directions on removing add-ons.
    * [[Disable or remove Add-ons]]
I went to [https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/language-tools/ the Dictionaries & Language Packs page] and installed [https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/dictionnaires-fran%C3%A7ais/ the "French spelling dictionaries" add-on] linked there. It didn't add any items to the Bookmarks Toolbar or otherwise misbehave.

  • Selecting a spelling dictionary with AppleScript

I would like is to have several buttons on Mail's toolbar and have an Applescript attached to each that sets the spelling dictionary language. Can this be done?
    Daniel

I don't know for the buttons, but here is a script that can set the language used in the spelling dictionary (at least with Mail 3.5 and Mac OS X 10.5.6). The script has been written for the French Canadian keyboard and could need some minor changes when used with other keyboards.
    set L to "Français"
    tell application "Mail"
    activate
    tell application "System Events"
    tell application process "Mail"
set W to windows whose (subrole is "AXFloatingWindow" and (name contains "orthographe" or name contains "spelling"))
    if W is {} then
keystroke ":" using command down -- with the French Canadian keyboard
    set N to 1
click pop up button 1 of window N
click menu item L of menu 1 of pop up button 1 of window N
    delay 1
click button 1 of window N
    else
    set W1 to item 1 of W
click pop up button 1 of W1
click menu item L of menu 1 of pop up button 1 of W1
    end if
    end tell
    end tell
    end tell
