Wrongly imported 24p Advanced into 30i timeline.

Dear Forum,
I shot 24pA and imported it into a 30i timeline thinking that the output onto BetaSP would be in 30i. I am now almost done with editing this project and realized that I may have edited in the wrong timeline all along. Since the pull down (2:3:2:3 vs. 2:3:3:2) is not accurate and leaves me with an additional field of lines, making the image look striped every few frames. Is there any way of taking out these additional frames at this point? If I would have edited this project in a 24p timeline as required for 24pA shooting, how could I even output to a 30i format?
Thank you very much for your answer.

Your 24pA footage actually comes off the tape as 30i with the advanced pulldown, which is just the pattern of interlaced and de-interlaced frames which allows the 24p to be "put back together" from the 30i.
If you don't remove the pulldown, you should be able to edit these clips into a 30i timeline and not have any problems. You might see field lines in the canvas, or jiggly freeze frames on your external video on interlaced frames, but if you have used easy setup, and the field dominance of your clips matches that of your sequence, the 30i motion video should not show field artifacts. It is possible that if you have source material that has cuts in it, that you can get frames with fields from either side of the cut, but that's not to likely on tapes that came right from the camera.
If you want edit in 24p, you are in luck that your footage is 24pA, because this can be converted right in FCP, either before capture, or after, with "remove advanced pulldown". Once this is done, you will have 24p clips (23.98) that you can edit into a 24p timeline and everything will be progressive and groovy. When you output back to tape from a 24p timeline, there is a setting in the A/V prefs to determine whether the output to tape uses the standard or advanced pulldown. If you master the 24p to tape (where it will have pulldown added, as you can't acutally record"24p" on videotape) You should use edit to tape to be sure the program starts on a 00 frames point, such as 01:00:00:00 on a pre-striped tape with NDF timecode. Observing this standard will streamline any inverse telecine process that might be done with tape in the future, such as encoding to 24p for DVD, ar getting a film transfer made.
hope this helps

  • Dvx100 24p advanced footage needs rendering?

I have footage captured from a DVX100 as 24p advanced into FCP. I used 2:3:3:2 pulldown to capture it. Now I'm editing on a 23.98 timeline but final edit needs to be rendered in that timeline despite the fact that I don't have any filters. However, in a regualr 48khz timeline, it needs no rendering. Can anyone help?

I would wager if you look at the footage, the pulldown has not been pulled out and the clip is still at 29.97. There is probably some break in the cadence and the pulldown was left in. You can try Remove Advanced Pulldown from the menu on the clip and see what happens...

  • Importing 3GP Files into a Final Cut Timeline

I'm trying to import 3GP files from a cell phone video camera into Final Cut to edit. I've read that it can be done, but I'm having difficulties setting the correct presets in FCP.
When I import a clip into FCP I get the following settings in the clip window:
    FRAME SIZE: 352 x 288
    Vid Rate: 10 fps
    Compressor: H.263
    Aud Rate: 8.0 KHZ
That said, I cannot replicate these settings when I try to set the "Sequence Settings" and therefore, the clip does not appear in the timeline when I drag it down. Is there a preset for using this file format? Is there an easier way to do this?
Thank you in advance for your help.

as your mobile phone footage is a non standard tv format, you really need to start off with a proper sequence setting, SD PAL, SD NTSC 4:3 then import your footage into the browser, drop it onto the timeline and let fcp auto conform to the sequence. You could also look at compressor to convert it to the right frame size, or use mpeg streamclip to turn the footage into DV QT movie
but as the mobile footage is small and highly compressed @10 frames a sec it is never going to look great anyway

  • 24P Advanced capture, timeline problem

My original footage is is shot 24PA DV CAM. I am using a sony DV CAM deck to capture. I am capturing using the easy setup setting DV NTSC 48kHz Adavanced (2:3:3:2) Pulldown removal. My sequence settings are 720x480 NTSC DV (3:2); NTSC-CCIR 601 DV; Editing Timebase 23.98; Copressor is DV/DVCPRO-NTSC at 100% quality; Audio is 48kHz-16-bit-Config: default. Field Dominance is grayed out.
I ran a series of 16 second test captures which when loaded into my timeline came up with the olive green stripe in the video portion of the render status line. I know that I can edit with that as that is just a reduced resolution, but when I capture longer clips (minutes in duration) those clips show orange in the render status bar of the same timeline. I also notice that the short clips come into the machine with a field dominance of none, but the long clips have a field dominance of even.
I must make sure that my final edit can go to film.
How can I get the clips to go into the timeline with a gray or olive green render status?

Thanks for the welcome, Shane. It's great to be here. To answer your question. Yes, I did use easy setup (I needed to check the show all box to get to the 2:3:3:2 advanced pulldown removal option. I even went back into all the settings windows to quadruple check that everything "took" correctly. I am completely baffled as to why a 16 second clip captured under the exact same settings and via the exact same method (capture now) as a 9 minute clip would come into FCP with different properties. The short clip loads into the time line with the olive green in the video portion of the render bar and with a field dominance of NONE in the properties data. The long clip loads into the timeline with an orange render bar and a field dominance of EVEN. This all with me having done the captures back-to-back without touching any settings. All I did was rewind the tape to roughly the same start point, hit the play button and re-engaged the capture now system. What could I be missing or inadvertantly doing wrong?

  • Imported stills become pixellated once dragged into the timeline?

I have a frustrating problem. I have generated a 768x576 pixel image (PNG format) for a PAL project which I import into FCE. When the file is double-clicked in the Browser to view in the Viewer, it looks nice and sharp (Viewer window with 200% magnification):
But when I drag that image into the timeline and render it (all video render options are ticked), it looks pixellated and frankly terrible in comparison:
When exported as a movie it also comes out like this. How do I keep this image looking clear and sharp? What is going wrong?

No, not yet, I'm trying to understand why the same image looks different in the Viewer compared to the Timeline. With a bit more digging and reading, part of the problem is the way image conversions are done between the square pixel computer world and rectangular pixel DV world (I'm sure you're familiar with http://lipas.uwasa.fi/~f76998/video/conversion/>this).
Following the pixel aspect and frame size conversion algorithm exactly in Photoshop, and using Quicktime to convert that to a DV frame, I now get a DV frame that matches the aspect ratio and size of the original PNG image. But the DV image still looks much softer and more pixellated than either the original PNG image or the Photoshop processed image.
To my simple brain, I don't see why the DV encoding algorithm should cause so much image degradation when applying the same algorithm in Photoshop produces a much crisper result. Do DV codecs use poor image resampling algorithms or something?
Is there any way to produce a crisper image in DV?

  • Can i drag a clip from the desktop directly into the timeline without importing it

    its seems so easy now
maybe I've been blind to this option before on 10.1.1
simply dragging  from the desktop or its source a clip to the story/ timeline itself not having to use   file> import media
which is a lot of steps IMHO
i notice when i do it also enters the library above where clips are seen and read to be dragged on the story line
    so
    is this incorrect ?
    thanks
    anyone

By dragging it into the timeline you're importing it based on your import preferences. Great for single clips.

  • I wrongly imported DVCPRO 50 files into a 720p HD sequence

    Hi,
I wrongly imported clips originally shot in DVCPRO 50 PAL files into my default 720p HD sequence into a 720p HD sequence and when I discovered that I started a DVCPRO 50 sequence and imported the clips from the HD seq but they all look a bit out of focus and they had to be resized, and the text looks a bit out of focus too.
How can I keep my edits but continue to work in the a seq set to the native format of the footage and make the clips look right?

    Trevor,
When you say your superdrive rips, the import speeds are typically around 20x, what encoding method and bit rate are you using ?
I imported another CD and watched for what import speed numbers were displayed. Routinely, they hovered around 8x and sometimes up to 12 or 13x, but never higher. I was told by someone at our local user's group meeting that ripping at AAC 192kbps was a double-pass, I think that was the words they used, and therefore slower. ( Many members thought 7 minutes to rip was typical ) I'm not so sure if that means the drive will only spin at half it's rated max speed ? Anyway, I walked over to my son's PC with the CD and ripped it at AAC 192kbps to his iTunes library. The numbers I saw were from 18x to frequently 23, 24 and sometimes briefly to about 26x. His drive has a max of 40x. By my reasoning, anything that would cause iTunes to rip this CD at a slower speed, whether due to the encoding rate or the CD's surface condition, should affect both computers equally, yes ? Yet the drive on the PC performed on average at twice the rate of the iMac. I think it's safe to say the rip speed is comfortably within the operating margins of both drives.
I'm not yet fully convinced this is normal for an iMac. My CD are in excellent shape. I'm the only one who uses them and I handle them with about as much care as the old audiofiles used to when they handled their vinyl LPs ( well, at least not as far as wearing cotton gloves and sweeping the dust off ). Most of them have absolutely no visible scratches or oily finger prints on their surfaces. I might experiment and see what rates I get if I use MP3 or a lower bit rate for AAC.

  • How to do import files from my dslr SD card into the timeline in Final Cut Pro X without losing HD quality?

The video clips appear to be rendering in high quality while in the import bar, but once i drag the clips into the timeline, the quality drops significantly. I have already exported the project, but the final product still shows that the quality is horrible even playing in quicktime.

Need much more information. I don't know what your DSLR is. Start with that. Please give exact specs of the media and of the project properties.

I have a short homemade film burnt onto a DVD, I now want to import the movie into IMOVIE on my MacBook Pro so that I can edit it, how would I go about doing this? Welcoming any guidance.  Thanks in advance.

    1. Insert your DVD.
    2. Open Disk Utilities (Application> Utilities> Disk Utilities). Highlight your DVD and press "New Image" on the upper toolbar.
    3. Choose the location you would like to save your DVD from the drop down menu, "Desktop" is usually the best choice. Then click Save.
    4. When finished, your DVD icon will appear on the desktop with the .dmg extension.
    5. With iMovie open, double-click the .dmg  file you created to mount it. The iMovie import window will then appear asking you to choose. Click Import All and wait for the Import to complete.

The audio is a .wav file created in Audacity.

I have included images of the Sequence settings and the playback settings because I was not sure what information you would need.
