WRT 160n v2 as a wireless repeater

I have a E4200 as my main router and would like to use my old WRT 160n v2 as a wireless repeater upstairs. I am getting the impression that I can't do that with v2...Is there any way I can make this work?

If the User Manual or the routers UI doesn't mention or display any Repeater funtions, then it would not be supported. The next best option would be to wired LAN to LAN AP mode and set it up as a additional wireless AP:

Or Cascade the router as BigDave mentioned.

When I am playing MW2 and Socom Confrontation (on PS3) or any game I get a message, and go to the main screen saying No internet connection deteced you must have a active network connection to play this game.  I not only get this from online gameplay, but even if I leave myself signed in I lose the internet and the same message occurs.  I checked with my laptop EasyLink Adviser map and the whole network goes down.  It's not the PS3 because I had it serveced for a diffrent issue with video, but this is ridiculous.  I paid 75 dollars for this router and im pretty mad with Linksys because the same thing happened with my G Linksys router.  ....More Info  My network provider is BrightHouse but this also happenes with Knology.  The WRT 160N v.3 is wireless what's wrong? Someone please help ME!!!  I'm going to throw the router through a window then pick it up and go to another WINDOW!!

When the internet goes down on your PS3, at that moment you can check if you are still able to go online from your Laptop or not?
On your Router setup page change the MTU size to 1365 and click on save Settings and then click on the Wireless tab and below change the Wireless Channel to 11 and then click on the "Advance Wireless Settings" and below Change the Beacon Interval to 50 ...Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 ...Click on "Save Settings"...

  • Hooking up a Westell E90-610015-06 and a Linksys WRT 160N?

Please help me.  I have spent hours trying to get my Linsys WRT 160N wireless router to work with my Westell 6100 modem (E90-610015-06).  I have tried the suggestions from dslreports, so please do not send me a link to this website.  Setting the modem to bridge and setting the wireless router to PPPoE does not work.  Also, changing the IP address on the router does not work.  Does anyone have any other ideas?

changing the IP Address does work.
You might be doing something differently.
Let me tell you a few things to check
You have to open your NIC properties
make sure its set like this
Then plug your PC into your linksys, or make sure you connect to it wirelessly.
    put in 192.168.1.1
    http://ui.linksys.com/files/WRT54G/v1-v4/4.20.7/
Change the  Local IP Address on the first page to reflect 192.168.0.1.
Then plug your linksys into the westell.
reboot the linksys, then reboot the pc (or you can do a repair, or an ipconfig/release and ipconfig/renew in DOS) and as long as the westell is online, everything else will pass internet traffic through
I hook those up all the time the same way and they work just fine.
if it doesn't work again this time let us know, and KEEP IN MIND this is how it should ultimately look
Wall -> westell -> linksys plugged into the yellow ethernet port, and plugged into where it says WAN on the linksys
then your PC wirelessly connects to the linksys.

  • Add another computer to a WRT 160N

On Thursday I bought a new WRT 160N. I followed the instructions and I can connect my wife's laptop to the new wireless network with no problem. Managing the network, connecting to the internet wirelessly, etc. with my wife's computer is a snap. Trying to connect my 6-year-old laptop to wireless internet through the new router is another story. My laptop can see the wireless network. But when I try to connect, enter in the WEP given in the EasyLink Advisor, and wait for the internet to work, my computer pings the network but nothing happens. Adding to my frustration is this: my network (which I run through my wife's laptop) can see my old laptop. When I follow the prompts to add my laptop to my wireless network, it asks if I the computer has a removable media device. I click yes, follow the directions (insert the USB device into the old computer--which it has no trouble reading), and the network says that no USB device could be detected. When I try to outsmart the EasyLink advisor and say that my old computer does not have a USB media device and go through the prompts the EasyLink Advisor eventually brings up a window with my network's security settings that I should use to connect my old laptop to the network. The only problem is that the computer only displays the top 1/3 of the relevant letters and numbers (we don't have a printer yet). Even if I could read or print the relevant information, I wouldn't know where to enter it on my old laptop.
All I want to do is connect my old laptop to the internet without entering in a long string of letters and numbers or relying on my wife's computer. I also want to make sure that connecting the old laptop does not leave my network open to intruders.

I have the same issues!  My laptop is only 2 years old however.  This is what I did to fix the issues.  FIRST: GET RID OF THE LINKSYS SOFTWARE off ur old computer!  Let the laptop find the router and connect with its default software.  SECOND: go to ur router setup(the website that is the router IP) under the "Wireless" tab set the "Network Mode" to Wireless-G only" as ur old computer probably cant use the N.  When I had it on "Mixed" which means it should use all the types it had MANY issues with the old computer....  I hope these things help you!
message me if you need help, I am pulling my hair out trying to fix MY issues... as in the lack of connectivity in an 850 sq ft apt... Ultra Range eh???

  • WAP54G Wireless Repeater still has problems after setup

I have a WAP54G configured as a Wireless Repeater to my WRT54GS router.  I have configured all equipment on my  wireless network (192.169.1.xxx) with static IP's.  My Router MAC has been entered in the WAP54G and the link works . . . kinda . . . .sorta. . . .with issues
I also have an A/V receiver hard-wired to the RJ-45 at the Wireless Repeater.  I am able to access Internet Radio stations on the A/V Receiver thru the Wireless Repeater uplinked to the Router and out to Internet.  I also have a Synology NAS which is hard-wired back at my WRT54GS router.  Although the A/V Receiver can "see" all audio files and folders on my network NAS, I am unable to play any of the MP3 files.  The Receiver will immediately display "Access Error".  As a test, if I temporarily plug the NAS network directly into the A/V Receiver (threreby bypassing all of my home networking) all MP3's will play fine.  Therefore, the problem must either be in the WAP54G, the WRT54GS, or the configuration in one or both of them..
    My connections are:
    A/V Receiver ------ WAP54GS {{{{{{{{{ wireless }}}}}}}}}}} WRT54GS ----- CABLE Modem ------- Internet
I also have a NAS directly hard-wired into one of the WRT54GS RJ-45 ports.
    My questions::
    1. When configured as a Wireless Repeater, wll the WAP54G still fully function with hard-wired devices connected directly into the RJ-45 port (as I currently have it set up)?  Most all of the literature and articles I've seen concentrate on the expansion of the Wi-Fi portion of the Wireless Repeater only and make minimal or no mention of using the integral RJ-45 port.
    2. Since the WAP54G Wireless Repeater has a separate actual IP address, do I need to do any changes to addressing on either my A/V Receiver, NAS? or Router  Specifically, does the Wireless Repeater become fully "transparent" to my home network or do I need to re-enter different IP addresses, port forwarding or port trigerring?  (This is the stuff I don't really understand.)
    3. Should the system basically function as I have described or is there anything I'm obviously missing that would prevent the A/V Receiver from properly communicating with the NAS thru the Wireless Repeater and the Router?
All replys or suggestions gratefully appreciated.

    Thanks for the reply,
As far as your sketch is concerned . . .Yes, that is what I attempted to describe in my earlier postings.
Before my first post, I attempted to verify as much as I was able.
I noted earlier that I had tried AP Client and could not get it to work.  Literature for the WAP states that the only mode which can connect a WAP to a WRT router is the Wireless Repeater mode.  On the WAP, both AP Client, and Wireless Bridge modes state that each will only communicate with another (second) WAP (there is no mention of WRT in those modes).  That would require a second WAP and yet more $$$, just to uplink ONE RJ-45 to my router.  OK, since it can't damage anything, I tried the other modes just for "grins & giggles".  It resulted in a very-unhappy wireless network.  All network devices poped up with IP-Conflict errors and the network came to a crashing halt.  This is why I ended up with Wireless Repeater mode.
Yes, with the WAP configured as Wireless Repeater, I AM able to easily ping the receiver from anywhere on my network.  In fact, I've tried 3-4 different ethernet devices plugged into the RJ-45 port of the WAP and I can ping them all.  Amazingly, every other ethernet device I plug into thje WAP work perfectly  . . except streaming music from my NAS to my A/V receiver.  At that point, I suspected the receiver has a network port problem except it perfectly streams internet radio thru the WAP.  The only thing the WAP will not stream successfully is music from my NAS.  I should also clarify that ALL firewall features on my NAS are disabled because it is already on the secure side of my router.  Therefore, I'm positive nothing in the NAS is blocking access from the WAP.  I've also verified my other 3 home PC's can access the NAS.  Two PC's are hard-wired to my router net and one PC is a laptop with wi-fi linked to my WRT router (all are on my 192.168.1.xxx network).  The REALLY screwy part is that I CAN display all files and folders on the NAS from the receiver  . . they just won't successfully play without giving a network error message.  Lastly, as a test, I've even temporarily disabled all wi-fi security.  Result is identical.
To eliminate everything but the WAP, I temporarily stretched a 75' Cat-5 cable between the receiver and my WRT router.  With no other changes or setting mods, it immediately works perfectly.  Seriously, I've spent dozens & dozens of hours on this.  I"ve even borrowed another WAP from a friend (same version & newest firmware revision) and once it is configured, it does the exact same thing. I've even did a WAP hardware "Reset" and reconfigured it from scratch . . . also same thing.
Again, to clarify, ALL of this is on the same side of my home network.  Everything is within my 192.168.1.xxx.  I've triple-checked that I have no IP confilicts, I've tried both DHCP and using static IP's.  I've even tried disconnecting ALL other devices except for my receiver, the WAP and the WRT with the same results.   I am NOT trying to access any of this from the internet side of my router, so I shouldn't need to mess with port forwarding amd all that.  Everything says it "should" work . . . but yet it doesn't, on TWO different WAP devices.  All I can figure out is that the RJ-45 port on the WAP is not "fully transparent" when configured as a Wireless Repeater.  The literature does not state whether it is or if the device is designed as a Wi-Fi repeater only.
Since I'm only trying to get a single RJ-45 device up-linked to my router, I'm inclined to pick up a $30 ethernet to wi-fi gaming adapter, throw my old WAP on the shelf and get a beer.  It should work, and I've spent WAY too much time on this already.

  • WRT 160N: Internet Dropping one of two New Toshiba (Windows 7) Laptops.

Can anyone shed any light as to why I would be losing my internet connection on one labtop, while I have 2 others (along with a desktop) and two iphones that continously hold their connections?  The desktop is running Windows Vista, one laptop is running XP and the two new Toshiba laptops are running Windows 7.
I have had this Cicsco Linksys (WRT 160N) router for about a year and it's been fine and all the connections hold just fine, until I bought my newest laptop 2 weeks ago.  It connects into the router just fine and holds the connection at times, but most of the time I'll get to the first website and then when I change it will get hung up and say it's not able to connect.
I would think that if it was an issue with the router maxing out (is there a maximum # of laptops that can be linked into the router?)  that I would have issues with all components and not just this Toshiba L675 laptop.  It show's that I'm connected to the router all the time, it just indicates in the network icon that it has "No Internet" until I refresh it.  I obviously want to refresh every 10 seconds and sometimes that doesn't even work.
Any suggestions, as I'm seriously thinking about taking the laptop back, but I don't really think it's the laptop.
I appreciate any insight any of you might have on this issue.
    Thanks!

Check for the model number of the Wireless Network Adapter of your Toshiba Laptop, If required try to update the wireless network adapter drivers and then check if you face the same problem or not.
On your Toshiba Laptop, under the wireless network adapter properties, Uncheck "QoS Packet Scheduler" "TCP/IPv6" and then try to connect to your wireless network again and then check .

  • How to change the passphrase on my WRT 160N V3

A few months ago, I purchase, installed and configured a WRT 160N V3.
    And I couldn't be happier.
I now would like to go back and change the passphrase that a user needs to enter when they connecting to my router.
Currently it uses the default value.
And I would like to make it a bit more friendly.
I found a number of postings dealing with setting retrieving or changing the Admin password.
But I was not able to find anything on changing the “passphrase”.
There probably are a number of postings on the subject, and I simply overlooked them.
I wonder if someone might be able to point me in the right direction.
    Thanks

Welcome to the Cisco Home Community.
Type 192.168.1.1 on your routers address bar and log in. Default is to leave username blank and type admin in the password field.
Go to Wireless then Wireless Security. You should see your passphrase there.

  • Connecting a wrt610n and netgear wnr2000v2 in wireless repeater mode

I am having trouble getting the wrt610n to connect to the wnr2000v2 that can be set a  wireless repeater.  I had a 160n hooked up and it was working fine, but am unable to get the 610n going on it.  I'm kinda new to setting this type of networking up , but have a general idea of how it works.  I have the 610n running and is broadcasting a signal, but the wnr 2000 will not connect to it wirelssly and repeat it.  The setup in the netgear is pretty basic , but I am new to the linksys 610n and the interface that's why I believe it has to do with the 610n.  Could someone please walk through the settings for me?  Any help would be appreciated.

So as per the scenario that you mentioned according to that could you please tell us the name of the ISP ( Internet Service Provider ).... As it all depends up the ISP ( Internet Service Provider ) setup....  Secondly check the firmware version of the Router is updated or not if it is not then it can be downloaded from the Cisco website (homesupport.cisco.com ).... Once after updating the firmware reset the Router and configure it again...
As far as wireless is concern WRT610N Router is dual-band Wireless-N Router... So that it means it has 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz
    frequencies...
As far as wireless settings is concern you can use same wireless network name or even you can use different network name...
For Channel Settings of 2.4 GHz you can make Channel Width to 20 MHz only and Channel to 6, 9, 11..
For Channel Settings of 5 GHz you can make Channel Width to 20 MHz only and Channel to 40 or 161..
So these settings are sufficient to make the Netgear  WNR2000 v2 as a repeater mode...

  • Can I add a second airport as a wireless repeater?

CAn I use a second airport extreme as a wifi repeater using the main router wifi?

I am hoping an airport express can work as a wireless repeater WITHOUT having to be connected into the LAN via Ethernet cabling. Is this possible? In the manual online it seems that it only works as an extender (i.e. it must be plugged into the network router/switch) and can't repeat a wifi signal from one wifi device to an apple extreme base station. Can someone confirm this?

  • Airport Express as wireless repeater

Hi all, just wondering if anyone could give me a hand. I have just bought an Airport Express (not arrived just yet) not just for streaming music, but for extending my network. I am a student and have just moved into my new house. The internet here already is fine, the people here before me have given me the password to the encryption but not to the account or the router. This will all change in September, however. The router is a Netgear DG834PN. My iMac is having difficulty connecting to the network, I think this is due to the distance it is away from the router, as when I connect the iMac upstairs (nearer to it) it connects fine, hence the desire for a wireless repeater. Will I be able to use the Airport Express as a repeater? If not, what must I do? Must I get an Apple wireless router as well? Will a time capsule be fine? Please remember I cannot access the DG834PN's graphical interface at all.
    Thanks in advance,
    Jake

You will need to run an ethernet cable from the netgear to your airport express. then setup the airpor express as an access point. As you don't have access to the WebUI of the router then you wont be able to setup the airport express as a WDS or wireless repeater.
The other option would be to connect a timecapsule to the router via ethernet. Setup the time capsule as a bridge to the router. Then you would be able to extend the wireless network with an airport express.

  • Wireless repeater using wrt54g and wap54g

i am having problems connecting my wrt54g and wap54g as wireless repeater. my setup is as follows: 1. wrt54g (192.168.1.10) is connected to a dsl provider modem/router (192.168.1.1) (dhcp server). With this setup i do not have any problems connecting my wired pc and laptop to the network. 2. on my 2nd floor the signal is faint thus i need to extend the wireless signal. 3. i have a wap54g (192.168.1.12) that i would like to repeat the signal of the wrt54g. 4. i tried the guide from the website but it was general thus there are some settings (recommended) that are missing. questions: 1. does the 2 wireless ap need to have the same SSID, channel and wep settings? 2. what should be the gateway for the wap54g? 192.168.1.1? 3. when using wifi, would i see 2 access point? or a single 1 and whoever is nearer? 4. does the wrt54g need to be a dhcp server? or the 192.168.1.1 can do that. 5. does my ideal setup be 2 AP and not 1 wireless router/ap and 1 ap? 6. can the wrt54g use wireless distribution mesh? 7. i cannot see my wrt54g from the firware downloads, mine is v7 and there are only v6 and v8? am from asia and this might be an asian version? any help would be appreciated.

what i did was the following: 1. enable wap54g as a wireless client to look for the main ssid. 2. copy the mac address to the option for wireless repeater. 3. i can now use the wap54g as a repeater. when i shut down everything and turn it on, i cannot again hook up. again, i have to do the steps above for the wap54g to act as a repeater. any idea on what the problem is? i am sure that what i am putting on the mac address is correct. even when i shut down and turn on all router and accesspoints. the connection seems lost.

  • Can WRG54G be a wireless repeater for WRG54GC or vice versa?

I have a WRG54GC on second floor off cable modem and works wirelessly to 2 PCs. However, I do not have signal on the first floor opposite side of house. I cannot move the access point as that's where the cable modem comes in. Can the other router I have be programmed to act as a wireless repeater? Or vice versa?. If not, does the WRG54G have a longer range than the WRG54GC?

well..the router only works as an access point..it cannot work as a wireless bridge or wireless repeater ...
in order to repeat the wireless signal , you can get a wireless range expander ...

  • Router model wrt 160n v2 help!

i have a router wrt 160n v2 and i need a good amount of help ive tryed calling linksys support and they tell me the same thing everytime and its not the problem, i have a modem that uses a USB and before its worked just fine then about 3 weeks ago its just went out. So i went to go buy (the model above) to replace it and when i hooked it up it shows it connected in port on the little sign that looks like waves are being sent out is lighting up and the power is lighting up. but the one that looks like saturn WILL NOT LIGHT UP! best buy told me i need to have the thing configured and im thinking thats it but linksys is telling me i need to call my internet porvideder and get a new modem which is not the case so i think its just need to be configured can anyone help?

I think in this case you need to reset your router and reconfigure the settings on it. First Connect the Modem to Linksys router on Internet Port and your computer to Linksys router on Port No.1. Once the Physical Connection is done, Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...

  • WRE54g as Universal Wireless Repeater?

Hi, I own a Wag200g wireless router and I would like to extend its range with a WRE54g product. Is this possible? Are they compatible? I read somewhere in this forum that you can use some versions of the WRE54g as a universal wireless repeater. Is this true? Which versions are usable as UWR? Please bring some light on this ^_^ Thank you!

I think this repeater is compatible with b/g 2.4 GHz wireless network. E3000 router is wireless N router. E3000 is also compatible with b/g wireless network. I think you should first contact the manufacturer of the repeater and make sure that it will work with N router. Sitecom WL-130 is basically wireless access point. You will need to configure it in repeater mode.
Follow this link to configure Sitecom WL-130 in repeater mode.
