WRT-54G and Other WiFi Routers Install Possible Solution!
The live chat turned out to be VERY helpful.
One thing I discovered was that trying to install on Win Vista wasn't working BECAUSE IE7.0 was crashing the firmware upgrade. While I thought that I had done that yesterday, it turned out that it hadn't. Instead, I tried to enter the firmware page (192.168.1.1) using Mozilla Firefox and found that it hadn't installed correctly. I couldn't even reach the page with IE7 but instead kept getting the "Page Not Found" error, even using WinXP as the operating system.
I'm NOT sure the WRT-54G will work when I try to install it tomorrow at a clients home, but I've gotten a lot further along using the Mozilla browser than the IE7 browser.
If you keep spinning your wheels and can't get the bloddy thing to work, I would suggest installing Mozilla first, setting it as your default browser (you may want to keep it that way), THEN trying to install firmware updates and reinstall the router.
Hope this helps.
Best Wishes
Arne

Intel macs, since 25 febr.
"watching outbound connections through Little
Snitch"
Interrupted connections under some circumstances
after applying the AirPort Extreme 2007-001 update:
This is (often) soluble by disabling any third-party
wireless signal monitoring or sniffing utilities.
I don't think Little Snitch was causing any problems, for me at least. It did let me see that it was trying to talk to the other machine's non-active IP address, which is what led me to turning off the other network ports.
It's quite informative to see which TCP and UDP ports are being actively used, and where they're going.

I want to buy a used Mac for video editing and there are alot of them with FCPX and other software already installed. If I buy one of these will I be able to do future updates to the software?
If they were downloaded from the Mac App store, no. In fact, the licenses are not transferable. Technically, it's not legal to sell you the machine with apps from the Mac App store still installed.

My situation is not one that I can handle and could use some help in getting it to work.
My internet connection(Modem) is in my office(rear of apartment) where I have three computers, but only two at any given time that are needed for connections to the internet. This is where I have my first WRT 54GS set-up and plugged in. I am also using a wall connect extender to relay my to my second WRT 54GS, which is in my living room where I have a Smart TV and my XBox connected to it(the router) through another extender. My extenders are Netgear. Now this works as long as I keep switching the common connection back and forth in the office from the router to the extender oir the modem to the extender.
My question is simply this...Is there a way I can run this all without haveing to switch the ethernet cable each time I want to use my XBox or the Smart TV in the living Room along with my office computers?
I am NOT even sure I have this set-up correctly, but I do get it working the way that I have it right now so any help would be greatly appreciatied and welcomed.......I am not a network geek, but I do know a bit about computers.
I have Windows 7 on both computers in my office.
Office Router: WRT54GS VER 7.2

Living Room Router: WRT54GS VER2

Thanking You in Advance,
FrankHi there, Frankiejr2. I agree with FurryNutz and bigdave240 about using the 2nd router (WRT54GS VER2) as an access point. This is called LAN to LAN Cascading. To cascade the routers, here's the link: http://kb.linksys.com/Linksys/ukp.aspx?vw=1&docid=785463d9ecaf4cac84aed245b08d615f_3733.xml&pid=80&r...
I hope this helps.

Can't open finder, appstore and other apps after installing updates
Hi,
I am using Mac book pro which I bought 3-4 years back. I have 8GB RAM. Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel core i5. Few days back I installed the updates and since then I am not able to open many applications like: Finder, App store and others. Some apps like Google Chrome, Microsoft word, Preview, etc are working fine. After the update I have OS X version 10.9.5 . I am not sure which version I had before update but it was Maverics and all apps were working perfectly.
When I try to open App store, it shows this error:
App Store cannot be opened because of a problem.
Check with the developer to make sure App Store works with this version of OS X. You may need to reinstall the application. Be sure to install any available updates for the application and OS X.
Click Report to see more detailed information and send a report to Apple.
When Finder crashes, it shows this error in Error report:

Desktops dropping wired connection to e4200 and other Linksys routers
Hi,
On Friday, I lost all Internet connnecitivity on my Linksys e3000. After determining that my cable modem was connected and working correctly, I pulled the e3000 and put my old wrv54g router in place. Wireless worked, but all wired connections showed link but no other apparent connectivity. Neither of my desktops could get a DHCP lease.
At that point, I purchased and manually installed a new e4200 router. All worked fine. Both laptops connected via wireless and both desktops via my house LAN. Until this morning (Monday). Wireless is working just fine, but both wired computers show 100 Mbs connections on an unknown network with no DHCP. Checking status shows packets going out, but nothing coming in. Checking LAN status on the router shows that both ports are connected, but it does not appear to receive anything from either desktop. All was fine last night. Oh, the router is on 1.0.03 firmware.
I have tried about everything I can think of. Configurations both on the router and the desktops (one Windows XP, 64 bit and one Windows 7) and all seems fine. I have disabled and reenabled the network connectors, rebooted both the router and the computers, etc. Nothing seems to work.
I am out of ideas and desparate. Does anyone have any idesa.
Thanks,
MitchI actually solved the problem, after a long day of trying everything I could think of, and the issue was not the router. I did a chat session with a Linksys support rep and we figured out that the router was bad. I replaced it with a new one and still had the same problem.
Long story short, I have a weather unit that connects, via wire, to the Internet to retrieve weather forecasts. It is hooked up through a ethernet switch, along with my desktop. For whatever reason, it went flakey and took down everything that was on a wire, including my wife's desktop in another room, which was connected to the router through a hub. As soon as I pulled the power on the weather device, everything started working. When I put power back, everything still worked.
Not sure why, or how this happened, but I will take success any way I can get it.
In regards to the e3000 problem, when I was returing the original e4200 for replacement at Best Buy, the guy there said that they had seen the ethernet switch part of the e3000 units fail before. I had an e3000, which failed last Friday, which was why I purchased the e4200 to replace it. Of course, my e3000 failed completely, including wireless.

Why is my Mac Book constantly "looking for networks" while i am using wifi?
If it is constantly searching for networks every five seconds or so, then it is the bluetooth - wifi problem discussed on other threads. I find that system preferences > network and clicking at the bottom on the 'Show wi-fi status in menu bar' button to switch it off, and then back onto the menu bar, solves the problem. Sometimes on waking I lose wi-fi completely and have to reload, but that's infrequent.
Hopefully Apple will come up with a solution soon. -
After effects cc incomplete renders and other problems after installing 2014
i left an almost 5 minute long project rendering last friday only to find out this morning that the first 55 seconds where left out of the render, with my work area set to the entire timeline. in the past i've had some other issues such as no audio when setting the output to audio or corrupted audio when setting it to on.
i'm not entirely positive, but i think this problems started when i installed 2014 a few weeks ago.
anyone experiencing similar issues, do you find a correlation between them and having both cc and 2014 in the same machine?
thanks,
d.There's no error on the log file, as far as the program concerns it rendered everything correctly.
My machine is an imac (iMac12,2) with 32gb ram and AMD Radeon HD 6970M with 2048 mb of VRAM.
My current settings (for approvals) are QT with H264 compression with audio output set to Auto and I'm rendering at half res, which in this project is 1024x1024 px, the render is taking approximately 4 and a half hours with MP off, last friday I tried it on and after 7 ours it only had less than 25% done and it said it still had 27 hours to go, so I canceled it and switch to MP off instead, it finished the render (incomplete, I found out today) in 2 hours and 38 minutes, plus 42 minutes for the missing portion this morning, which came with no audio.
I haven't rendered uncompressed or prores yet, but I will be doing tonight to see if that yields a different result.
Is this enough or you need more specifi data like solo switches settings, guide layers, etc?
Thanks,
D. -
Airport signal blinking and others WIFI problems
I have a serious problem with my MacBook Pro. The WIFI signal is pretty weak compared to my old iBook or PowerMac G5, and sometimes, the Airport signal is lost and the Airport signal goes from 5 bars to 0, like a blinking.
I have this message in the Console " Feb 2 21:57:27 ordinateur-de- /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Apple80211.framework/Resources/airport: Error: WirelessAssociate2() = 88001006 for network Airport. The operation timed out. "
I have no problem with the iBook or the PM G5 on the same WIFI network.
What can I do ?if you are having a reception issue, you may be having some sort of environmental interference.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58543
also, you can organize your network ports to have airport as your primary. this may help
open system preferences > network
- change the Show: to network port configuration
- drag airport to the top of the list
- click apply now , in bottom right
- restart
hope this helps -
How to change loacalization of time capsule and other wifi hardware
I have several apple machines like, time capsule and airport extreme from different countries around the world. In a globalized world I move every 3-4 years to a new country/region. In the wifi setup of the time capsule and the airport extreme you'll only find 5 or six countries (china, Korea, Japan, chile...) but nothing about Morocco or any european country. So when you try to set "restricted access" between 1 to 5 p.m., your regional setting is China, but you live some where in Europe, there is a time difference of several hours you have to take into consideration. That is a bad joke.
There is no way of choosing a different location or setting the time as far as I know inside the setup.
Any ideas, before I sell all my Apple stuff and buy Samsung or Fujitsu?Hi, you must go to Airport Utility, and in menù Disk you can change the name.

Are airport express and extreme, wifi routers or wifi modems?
I have had a wifi modem for a while. I also have a apple wifi router that I have wiredly connected, that I have had since I got the modem. The only problem is, the router doesn't reach my entire house. There are a couple of rooms on the second floor of my house that it doesn't reach. I wanted to get another router, to put in one of the rooms upstairs. I don't want a whole new wifi connection, just another router/access point. I was looking on the website and saw the airport extreme and airport express items. I saw that they were wifi connections, but what I was looking for is another router, and I didn't see any explanation on that. Are they just another router/access point, or are they new modems that are required to be plugged in and set up?
Ok thanks. So I can just connect them to my modem and they will just be a second connection right? Also do they connect to my modem wiredly or wirelessly?

Repeated efforts to downloaded latest version of firefox results in error message that various programs are incompatible with firefox, including roadrunner internet connection and most every Java subprogram.
Would like to switch to latest version of firfefox, but always have to restore computer to earlier 3.6 version.
Any solution ??Hi there rbowman, I can understand how concerning this is. It sounds like you set up Firefox on one or a couple of computers. It also sounds like you went with the regular version of Firefox. When you first set up Firefox it ask if you would like to pull settings, history, etcetera. I believe it does this after an update too. At lest in the regular one. So the employee must of said yes I want all my stuff from IE, and we know how that worked out. Firefox makes a version for the IT admin. It is called Firefox extended support. This lets you manage settings and all of that good stuff that an admin would have to do without going computer to computer. I would recommend you try this. Hope it goes better this time.

Dual boot - (Lion and SL) Wifi in SL none in Lion - very disappointed in Apple
I installed a SSD drive in my 15.4 mid-2009 Macbook Pro to be able to daul boot into either Lion or Snow Leopard. I did this because the first time I tried to upgrade to Lion I had no WiFi hardware but after going to Apple we figured it may have been something during the update so we rolled back to SL. I also found out that my optical drive died at the same time - kinda wierd. So I put the SSD in where the optical drive had been and installed Lion 10.7.2. Booted up and no WiFi Hardware installed again. So I booted back up into SL and no problems at all with WiFi. So I took my laptop into the Apple store expecting the usaul Apple care where they would take care of this problem even though I was out of warranty. Showed the genuis guy the problem.
Well they ended up charging me to put in a new WiFi card and told me I was getting a bonus because they replaced the screen - even though when I dropped it off the only problem with the screen was a dent on the outside. So they sent me off charging me $68 for the new card and losing future business from way more than the $68 they got from me. As an IT manager I'm responsible for 15 macs - that will now all be on SL for a long time. I will also be much slower to update the 10 iPhones to the latest versions.
Thank you apple for sending me away as an unhappy customer - not liking the new apple. The old Apple would have just taken care of this issue without a question. Many apps are "self-contained" and so can run from any partition. So you could just move the apps to one location so that you can run and update them from either. (As long as the apps did NOT have to be "installed".)
So you partitioned your one internal hard drive? You could also install OSX to an external hard drive. Then turn of that hard drive when not booted to it.
Is there some old apps you need, which is why you must still use SL? If so, SL that is what I would put on the external hard drive. Since it is apps you wouldn't be able to update anyway, putting SL on the external drive just for the things that can't run in Lion makes sense, since you can turn it off when not needed. Otherwise, if you're holding on to SL "just in case", then eventually I suggest to take the leap and move completely over to Lion when you're ready, which obviously removes the need to dual boot.
(I realize you have a Macbook Pro, so an external HD is not ideal. But there are many physically small HDs that aren't too inconvinient, especially if you get a Firewire bus powered drive. And you have a 17" MBP so I'm assuming size and weight aren't an absolute, top-most, high-ranking priority. ) -
So I've got my WRT-610n hooked up, replacing my WRT-54g, and so far it's working fine, with the one exception that my VOIP adapter doesn't work? If I unplug the router and the cable modem and re-plug them in, it works great, for about 5 minutes, then it doesn't recognize the phone anymore. I'm pretty sure it's not the VOIP adapter, although the power and internet lights are both lit on it. (voip is Linksys spa2102)
Thanks for any suggestions. It should ideally work, did you check the firmware on your router as it could a firmware problem...You should have Ver.1.00.02.10 Firmware, if not Download Firmware 7.27 MB, and Upgrade your router...See if this helps...Make sure you reset and re-configure your router after the Upgrade...

Malware and Other Various Nasties
Hello Everyone
I am looking for some real solid feedback when it comes to the various onslaught on nasty infectious computer viruses , malware , spyware and things such as viruses and key loggers.
Would anyone know of any real solid top notch programs / applications that work very well with a Mac?
Thanks To All !
- Best Regards! You want the whole nine yards?!
Do not be tricked by 'scareware' that tempts computer users to download fake anti-virus software that may itself be malware.
Fake anti-virus software that infect PCs with malicious code are a growing threat, according to a study by Google. Its analysis of 240m web pages over 13 months showed that fake anti-virus programs accounted for 15% of all malicious software.
Scammers trick people into downloading programs by convincing them that their PC is infected with a virus.
Once installed, the software may steal data or force people to make a payment to register the fake product.
Beware of PDF files from unknown sources. A security firm announced that by its counting, malicious Reader documents made up 80% of all exploits at the end of 2009.:
http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9157438/RoguePDFs_account_for_80_of_all_exploits_saysresearcher
No viruses that can attack OS X have so far been detected 'in the wild', i.e. in anything other than laboratory conditions.
It is possible, however, to pass on a Windows virus to another Windows user, for example through an email attachment. To prevent this all you need is the free anti-virus utility ClamXav, which you can download for Tiger and Leopard from (on no account install Norton Anti-Virus on a Mac running OS X):
http://www.clamxav.com/
The new version for Snow Leopard is available here:
http://www.clamxav.com/index.php?page=v2beta
(Note: ClamAV adds a new user group to your Mac. That makes it a little more difficult to remove than some apps. You’ll find an uninstaller link in ClamXav’s FAQ page online.)
However, the appearance of Trojans and other malware that can possibly infect a Mac seems to be growing, but is a completely different issue to viruses.
If you allow a Trojan to be installed, the user's DNS records can be modified, redirecting incoming internet traffic through the attacker's servers, where it can be hijacked and injected with malicious websites and pornographic advertisements. The trojan also installs a watchdog process that ensures the victim's (that's you!) DNS records stay modified on a minute-by-minute basis.
You can read more about how, for example, the OSX/DNSChanger Trojan works here:
http://www.f-secure.com/v-descs/trojanosxdnschanger.shtml
SecureMac has introduced a free Trojan Detection Tool for Mac OS X. It's available here:
http://macscan.securemac.com/
The DNSChanger Removal Tool detects and removes spyware targeting Mac OS X and allows users to check to see if the trojan has been installed on their computer; if it has, the software helps to identify and remove the offending file. After a system reboot, the users' DNS records will be repaired.
(Note that a 30 day trial version of MacScan can be downloaded free of charge from:
http://macscan.securemac.com/buy/
and this can perform a complete scan of your entire hard disk. After 30 days free trial the cost is $29.99. The full version permits you to scan selected files and folders only, as well as the entire hard disk. It will detect (and delete if you ask it to) all 'tracker cookies' that switch you to web sites you did not want to go to.)
A white paper has recently been published on the subject of Trojans by SubRosaSoft, available here:
http://www.macforensicslab.com/ProductsAndServices/index.php?mainpage=document_general_info&cPath=11&productsid=174
Also, beware of MacSweeper:
MacSweeper is malware that misleads users by exaggerating reports about spyware, adware or viruses on their computer. It is the first known "rogue" application for the Mac OS X operating system. The software was discovered by F-Secure, a Finland based computer security software company on January 17, 2008
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacSweeper
On June 23, 2008 this news reached Mac users:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/06/23/mac_trojan/
More on Trojans on the Mac here:
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/63574.html?welcome=1214487119
This was published on July 25, 2008:
Attack code that exploits flaws in the net's addressing system are starting to circulate online, say security experts.
The code could be a boon to phishing gangs who redirect web users to fake bank sites and steal login details.
In light of the news net firms are being urged to apply a fix for the loop-hole before attacks by hi-tech criminals become widespread.
Net security groups say there is anecdotal evidence that small scale attacks are already happening.
Further details here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/7525206.stm
A further development was the Koobface malware that can be picked up from Facebook (already a notorious site for malware, like many other 'social networking' sites like Twitter etc), as reported here on December 9, 2008:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/hi/technology/newsid_7773000/7773340.stm
You can keep up to date, particularly about malware present in some downloadable pirated software, at the Securemac site:
http://www.securemac.com/
There may be other ways of guarding against Trojans, viruses and general malware affecting the Mac, and alternatives will probably appear in the future. In the meantime the advice is: be careful where you go on the web and what you download!
If you think you may have acquired a Trojan, and you know its name, you can also locate it via the Terminal:
http://theappleblog.com/2009/04/24/mac-botnet-how-to-ensure-you-are-not-part-of- the-problem/
As to the recent 'Conficker furore' affecting Intel-powered computers, MacWorld recently had this to say:
http://www.macworld.co.uk/news/index.cfm?email&NewsID=25613
Although any content that you download has the possibility of containing malicious software, practising a bit of care will generally keep you free from the consequences of anything like the DNSChanger trojan.
1. Avoid going to suspect and untrusted Web sites, especially p'orn'ography sites.
2. Check out what you are downloading. Mac OS X asks you for you administrator password to install applications for a reason! Only download media and applications from well-known and trusted Web sites. If you think you may have downloaded suspicious files, read the installer packages and make sure they are legit. If you cannot determine if the program you downloaded is infected, do a quick Internet search and see if any other users reported issues after installing a particular program. A recent example is of malware distributed through innocent looking free screensavers: http://www.zdnet.com/blog/security/malware-watch-free-mac-os-x-screensavers-bund led-with-spyware/6560?tag=nl.e589
3. Use an antivirus program like ClamXav. If you are in the habit of downloading a lot of media and other files, it may be well worth your while to run those files through an AV application.
4. Use Mac OS X's built-in Firewalls and other security features.
5. Stop using LimeWire. LimeWire (and other peer-to-peer sharing applications and download torrents) are hotbeds of potential software issues waiting to happen to your Mac. Everything from changing permissions to downloading trojans and other malicious software can be acquired from using these applications. Similar risks apply to using Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, YouTube and similar sites which are prone to malicious hacking: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8420233.stm
6. Resist the temptation to download pirated software. After the release of iWork '09 earlier this year, a Trojan was discovered circulating in pirated copies of Apple's productivity suite of applications (as well as pirated copies of Adobe's Photoshop CS4). Security professionals now believe that the botnet (from iServices) has become active. Although the potential damage range is projected to be minimal, an estimated 20,000 copies of the Trojan have been downloaded. SecureMac offer a simple and free tool for the removal of the iBotNet Trojan available here:
http://macscan.securemac.com/files/iServicesTrojanRemovalTool.dmg
Also, there is the potential for having your entire email contact list stolen for use for spamming:
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/06/20/technology/internet/20shortcuts.html?_r=1
NOTE: Snow Leopard, OS 10.6.x, offers additional security to that of previous versions of OS X, but not to the extent that you should ignore the foregoing:
http://www.apple.com/macosx/security/
Apple's 10.6.4 operating system upgrade silently updated the malware protection built into Mac OS X to protect against a backdoor Trojan horse that can allow hackers to gain remote control over your treasured iMac or MacBook.
http://www.sophos.com/blogs/gc/g/2010/06/18/apple-secretly-updates
Finally, do not install Norton Anti-Virus on a Mac as it can seriously damage your operating system. Norton Anti-Virus is not compatible with Apple OS X.
