WRT 54G problem

Last night there was a storm. I had my xbox plugged in the ethernet and so did my roommate and he also had his coomputer plugged in with an ethernet cord. Today, the router is not working. Only the first port the third and fourth ports are working. Did lightning fry the router and is there anything I can do to check. I've tried different combinations of cords and devices and only the third and fourth work and my roommate's computer's ethernet port doesn't work either.

master_raki's advise is good, but your symptoms sound very bad. If restting the router, and reflashing it doesn't help, you will need new hardware.
If it were me, I would be trying to figure out where the treansient entered your network and fix it so it doesn't happen again. Good luck sir.

WRT-54G Problems

OK, I had a wired PC hooked up along with a wireless laptop all working great for over a year then I had to unplug some cables and when I turned everything back on I lost all connection.
The cable modem works fine if I plug it directly to the PC but I get nothing going through the router. I tried pinging it but get nothing. The power light flashes.
HELP................

I have experienced a similar problem a couple of times in the past month - usually after a power outage. I'm able to log into the router, run traceroute diagnostics ok, but the router doesn't seem to allow any wan access from the lan side. No internet restriction, etc. My ISP's router is fine, and issues my Linksys router a DHCP address ok. If I plug a PC directly into the ISP router, everything's fine. Have tried unplugging everything and cold starting (first ISP router, then Linksys) - nothing. My WRT-54g is a v2.2 - firmware 4.21.1 I mainly have it there as a wireless access point, and to allow a DMZ on the network between the two routers.
The only thing thing that works is to reset to factory defaults. From there, the only things I change are password, MAC filter on wireless, SSID, and wireless channel. It's starting to get annoying - any help is appreciated.

WRT 54G v2 not recognized

I have been trying all day to set up my parent WRT 54G router. The router used to work fine, but we've had some renovations done tot he house and I've recently moved them back in.
I've managed to be able to connect (via Ethernet) to the router in order to configure it, and I've been able to connect to the ADSL modem and have configured that too. I was told to make sure that the modem was set up to allow bridging, and I've done this.
The problem comes when I try to connect the modem to the router to my computer. The router doesn't recognize that it has an internet connection. Further, when I've tried using Linksys Easylink Adviser I'm told that the program doesn't recognize the router even though all the correct lights are lit or flashing. I have tried resetting both the modem and router multiple times. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

if the connection is proper and the lights are lit up fine as well then open IE on the computer that is wired to the router....type http://192.168.1.1 .. logon keeping the username blank and the default password is "admin"....once on the set up page , go to Mac Address Clone subtab , click enable and click clone your PC's MAC .... save the settings...now under the Basic Setup subtab , change the internet connection type to PPPoE and enter the username and password info.....save the settings and do a power cycle....see whether this helps u

WRT-54G and Other WiFi Routers Install Possible Solution!

The live chat turned out to be VERY helpful.
One thing I discovered was that trying to install on Win Vista wasn't working BECAUSE IE7.0 was crashing the firmware upgrade. While I thought that I had done that yesterday, it turned out that it hadn't. Instead, I tried to enter the firmware page (192.168.1.1) using Mozilla Firefox and found that it hadn't installed correctly. I couldn't even reach the page with IE7 but instead kept getting the "Page Not Found" error, even using WinXP as the operating system.
I'm NOT sure the WRT-54G will work when I try to install it tomorrow at a clients home, but I've gotten a lot further along using the Mozilla browser than the IE7 browser.
If you keep spinning your wheels and can't get the bloddy thing to work, I would suggest installing Mozilla first, setting it as your default browser (you may want to keep it that way), THEN trying to install firmware updates and reinstall the router.

This is (often) soluble by disabling any third-party
wireless signal monitoring or sniffing utilities.
I don't think Little Snitch was causing any problems, for me at least. It did let me see that it was trying to talk to the other machine's non-active IP address, which is what led me to turning off the other network ports.
It's quite informative to see which TCP and UDP ports are being actively used, and where they're going.

WRT-54G with a rouge's gallery of users

I have an older revision 4 of the WRT-54G that I use as a hotspot/switch/router/etc. which it manages to handle suprisingly well.
My internet connection is so fast it saturates the wireless users. On the wire I can get faster speeds as G maxes out at 54 Mbits.
The problem is the box does not show up with Windows clients as a residential gateway client in the network list, for XP x86 and XP x64 clients or others.
I have X, Vista, Win 2K, Linux, Apple all connected to the box, making it earn its keep big time.
All Windows clients have the network services added. So at leat that is supposted to be all that's needed.
The box is set up as 192.168.7.1 so dodge some morons who run a web server on 192.186.1.1 and make it hard to connect to the device.
All the web services are manually forwarded to the Linux box which acts as the internet applicance. Everyone else is DHCP.
The web appliance works fine, I can connect from anywhere to up the page.
Just wanted to have the residential gateway entry avalable.

The WRT54G is configures for DHCP but the Linux box has a static address for the port forwarding to operate. The other machines use DHCP as there are no other port forwardings.
The Linux box has DHCP but it is disabled. Instead I have several services running such as Apache2, FTP and so on.
The Linux box and the main Windows box are both wired to the box with CAT 5. There is another Windows machine on wireles, along with an Apple Touch and a Apple notebook.
The DHCP comes from the WRT54G all computers have a single connection to the box as the central network router.

WRT-54G connection issues?

So, I have this WRT-54G that I got from a freind a while ago. It has worked pretty well mostly. Previous to this week, every once in a while (once a week maybe?) it would disconnect from all of the computers in the house, and not let us reconnect. Opening the "Wireless Networks Available" screen would show my router, with 5 bars of connectivity, but when I would double click it, it would think for a few seconds and then say it couldn't connect. Once in a while, it WOULD connect, and I would be able to get online just long enough to open an email or two, and then it would disconnect again. Anyway, usually waiting a couple hours, or overnight, and it would magically be working again in the morning.
Now, this week, it's in a constant state of that "showing 5 bars, but won't connect, except sometimes, when it disconnects me almost immediately." I've moved it from the other room, to where it's sitting 2 feet away from my computer, so range/interference shouldn't be an issue.
Does anyone have any idea **bleep** is going on here? Why would I be able to see the router on the network, with 5 bars, but not be able to connect to it? (yes I have the right wpa password and all that) Is my router just borked and I need a new one? Is there some setting somewhere that says "Don't be lame."?
Any advice would be appreciated.

First of all, please wire a computer to your router. Do not connect any computers wirelessly. Does this wired connection work properly? If not, DO NOT proceed with the suggestions listed below. We will need to get your wired connection working properly first, then fix the wireless problem. Report back with the problems that you are having with the wired connection.
Assuming that your wired connection works properly, then proceed with the following:
There are many causes for poor wireless connections, and many solutions:
First of all, give your network a unique SSID. Do not use "linksys". If you are using "linksys" you may be trying to connect to your neighbor's router. Also set "SSID Broadcast" to "enabled". This will help your computer find and lock on to your router's signal.
Poor wireless connections are often caused by radio interference from other 2.4 GHz devices. This includes wireless phones, wireless baby monitors, microwave ovens, wireless mice and keyboards, wireless speakers, and your neighbor's wireless network. In rare cases, Bluetooth devices can interfere. Even some 5+ GHz phones also use the 2.4 Ghz band. Unplug these devices, and see if that corrects your problem.
In your router, try a different channel. There are 11 channels in the 2.4 GHz band. Usually channel 1, 6, or 11 works best. Check out your neighbors, and see what channel they are using. Because the channels overlap one another, try to stay at least +5 or -5 channels from your strongest neighbors. For example, if you have a strong neighbor on channel 9, try any channel 1 through 4.
Also, try to locate the router about 4 to 6 feet above the floor, in an open area. Do not locate it behind your monitor or near other computer equipment or speakers. The antenna should be vertical.
Also, in the computer, go to your wireless software, and go to "Preferred Networks" (sometimes called "Profiles" ). There are probably a few networks listed. Delete any network named "linksys". Also delete any network that you do not recognize, or that you no longer use. Delete your current network (this will remove any old settings.) Reboot computer. Return to "Preferred Networks" and re-enter your network info (SSID, encryption (if any), and key (if any) ). Then select your current network and make it your default network, and set it to automatic login. You may need to go to "settings" to do this, or you may need to right click on your network and select "Properties" or "settings". Reboot computer. You should connect automatically. If not, temporarily turn off your computer's software firewall.
If the above does not fix your problem, download and install the latest driver for your wireless card.
Some users have reported improved wireless performance by switching to WPA encryption.
If you continue to have problems, try the following:
For wireless g routers, try setting the "Transmission Rate" to 54 Mbps.
If you still have trouble, download and install the latest firmware for your router. After a firmware upgrade, you must reset the router to factory defaults, then setup the router again from scratch. If you saved a router configuration file, DO NOT use it.

Trouble with WRT-54G

I have a new WRT-54G wireless router. I am on DSL. I had another wireless box and it went bad so I purchased the Linksys. Since I have hooked it up my lap top will not recieved data. It shows that it is connected but when I try to bring up Internet Explorer it says page cant be displayed. I have checked my connections but I cant figure it out. I have a main computer hooked on my Westel router and it works fine. Can some one give me an idea what's wrong. I thought if it was connected it should be getting the data.

Check the connection from computer directly connected to Router using Ethernet cable.
If it is working try opening set up page using http://192.168.1.1 ….. You will see username & password …leave username blank & in password use admin.
Click on wireless tab ….. Change SSID to any non-linksys name ….click save settings.
Click on wireless security sub-tab….change security level from disable to either WEP or WPA. Click save settings.

Well its not possible to restore the earlier firmware back on your Router. Since you have already upgraded the firmware on your Router, Have you resetted your Router and re-configured all the settings on it again? Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...

Updating the firmware Router WRT-54G ver2

Good morning guys!
Im trying to update the firmware of my router WRT-54G Ver 2. But when I selection the version of my hardware, the FW file is this one:
WRT54G_v4.21.1_fw.zip
Is it the right file? Im scared cuz my hardware is ver 2, and this v4.21.1 looks like for a v4 version... Can any1 help me?

I have a Cisco/Linksys WRT-54G wireless router and 2 Airport Extremes (the small ones that plug directly into the wall). Is it possible to extend the network from the router using these two AEs? I have a DVD player and Ext HD plugged into the router too..

The Cisco/Linksys WRT-54G was one of the very few routers said to be compatible with Apple's implementation of WDS (Wireless Distribution System) settings.
The info that I have on file indicates that only the WRT-54G versions 4 and under were compatible, so that would be one bridge to cross.
Even if you find that your Cisco/Linksys might be the right version, Apple never published instructions on how to configure the Express devices with other manufactures, so users were left to their own devices to try to figure out how to get things working. Apple's instructions to connect to other Apple devices are in the link below:

If you were hoping to use 2 Express devices in this type of configuration...even if it works...the bandwidth penalties will be extremely severe.
The first Express drops the bandwidth (and speed) on the entire network in half and the second halves everything again. So, the result, in effect would be a "g" wireless network running at 25% speed. Few users would consider installing this type of network.
At this point, it becomes one of those things where the fact that you might be able to do something does not mean that there would be much value in doing so. But, it is your decision to decide if you want to try to proceed.

Westell 7500 modem bridged to Linksys WRT-54g connectivity issue

Hello,
I have been trying to bridge my Westell VersaLink 7500 to my Linksys WRT-54g V8.0 flashed with dd-wrt.
1. I started by hard resetting both the router and modem
2. Disabled the walled garden.
3. Went into My Network > Network Connections > Broadband Connections > VC's edit > Changed Protocol from PPPoE to Bridge
4. Changed Bridge mode to Bridge
-Hit Apply
5. Went back to My Network > Network Connections > LAN > Unchecked Private LAN DHCP Server Enable box
-Hit Apply
6. Went back to My Network > Wireless Access Point > Turned off Wireless.
-Hit Apply
Turned off modem.
Unplugged Ethernet from Westell and plugged into LAN port on Linksys
1.Went to 192.168.1.1
2.Reset UN and PW
3. Went to Setup
3. Changed Router IP from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.254.1
4.Clicked Connection Type > Changed
Auto Config to PPPoE (found out by Westell that I am in a PPPoE area)
5. Used UN and PW credentials from Westell router as UN and PW for PPPoE Wan Connection
6. Hit apply changes
7. Waited for router to reboot.
8. Went to Wireless > Changed SSID and Password to my liking.
9. Hit apply.
10. Went to status > WAN > hit connect > CONNECTED
Unplugged Linksys WRT-54g
1.Plugged one Ethernet cable into the Westell 4/Data port > to the Internet WAN port on Linksys
2. Plugged another Ethernet from LAN port 3 to PC
3. Turned on Router waited untill Power light, Ethernet 4 light and DSL light came on.
4. Plugged in Router and waited untill it was up and running.
5.Turned on PC
6. No internet.
7.Released and Renewed ip in cmd (ran as admin) still nothing.
8. Default Gateway is 192.168.254.1 as is DHCP Server and DNS Server.
Can someone tell me what is wrong and/or why this is not working and how to fix it.

Changing the Westell VersaLink 7500 to Bridge Mode
n order to use third-party routers with your Westell VersaLink 7500 gateway, you must first change your VersaLink gateway to Bridge mode.
Note: The setup screens may vary slightly from the ones included below, depending on when you purchased your VersaLink gateway and the firmware running on it.
To change your Westell VersaLink 7500 gateway to Bridge mode:
Log in to the Westell VersaLink 7500 gateway by entering http://192.168.1.1 in your browser’s address bar.
When prompted, enter your gateway's user name and password. [Show Me]
Note: The default User Name is admin and password is password.
From the main menu, click My Network.
Updating the connection settings
Click Network Connections in the left navigation panel. [Show Me]
Click Broadband Connection (DSL).[Show Me]
Under the VC’s section, click the Edit icon. [Show Me]
Select Bridge from the Protocol drop-down menu.
Select routed bridge in the Bridge Mode field. [Show Me]
Click OK to confirm you want to reset your modem. The Westell gateway will now reset itself.
Turning wireless off
Once the modem resets, the main page will display. If the main page doesn't display, clickMain.
Note: When configuring the Westell VersaLink 327W or 7500 to bridge mode, the wireless settings must be disabled. Once the device is configured to bridge mode, you may then re-enable wireless.
Click Wireless Settings. [Show Me]
Click Basic Security Settings in the left navigation panel. [Show Me]
Turn off Wireless by selecting Off.
Scroll to the bottom of the window and click Apply.
Click OK when the warning displays that your wireless access will be interrupted. [Show Me]
Changing the LAN settings
You will be redirected to the main page. If the main page doesn't display, click Main.
Click My Network. [Show Me]
Click Network Connections.[Show Me]
Click LAN.
Remove the check from the Private LAN DHCP Server Enable box.
Click Apply.
Turning wireless back on
Click OK if a warning displays that enabling private LAN will disable public LAN. [Show Me]
The modem is now in Bridge Mode. Close the window if you don't want to re-enable wireless and continue with Step 26. To enable wireless, continue with Step 22 - 25 below.
Click Wireless Settings. [Show Me]
Click Basic Security Settings. [Show Me]
Select On under "Turn Wireless On."
Your VersaLink gateway is now in Bridge mode with wireless enabled. Close the VersaLink configuration window.
The last step before you're ready to connect your third-party router is to terminate any active TCP/IP connections on your network.

ConectING wires from router(WRT 54G V8 TO MODEM AND TO MY COMPUTER

WHAT WIRES DO I USE TO CONNECT MY ROUTER (WRT 54G V80) TO MY MOTOROLA MODEM AND MY CO MPUTER..II HAVE THE BLUE PLUG ATTACHED TO MY ROUTER IN THE ONE OUTLET AND THEN INTO MY MODEM I HAVE THE SMALL WIRE PLUGGED INTO THE ROUND PLUG ON MY ROUTER
IHAVE A BLACK WIRE WITH THE SAME LARGE PLUGS WHICH I ATTACHED TO MY ROUTER INTHE AREA NEXT TO THE BLUE WIRE AND THEN INT MY COMPUTER.. IAS THAT THE RIGHT CONNECTIONS??

MODEM's port connected with ethernet cable to the WRT's Internet Port (WAN).
Computer connected with ethernet cable to one of the ethernet ports on the WRT labeled 1 through 4.

Linksys WRT-54G-TM router Firmwere Locked????

any one have an idea how to change the firmware out these units they are Super "g" with 32MB of ram and 8MB of flash i want to change out the firmware but it just gose back to the stock firmware it seems to be based on Linux it's an WRT-54g T-Mobile box v 1.1

WRT 54GS SET-UP DUAL ROUTERS

My situation is not one that I can handle and could use some help in getting it to work.
My internet connection(Modem) is in my office(rear of apartment) where I have three computers, but only two at any given time that are needed for connections to the internet. This is where I have my first WRT 54GS set-up and plugged in. I am also using a wall connect extender to relay my to my second WRT 54GS, which is in my living room where I have a Smart TV and my XBox connected to it(the router) through another extender. My extenders are Netgear. Now this works as long as I keep switching the common connection back and forth in the office from the router to the extender oir the modem to the extender.
My question is simply this...Is there a way I can run this all without haveing to switch the ethernet cable each time I want to use my XBox or the Smart TV in the living Room along with my office computers?
I am NOT even sure I have this set-up correctly, but I do get it working the way that I have it right now so any help would be greatly appreciatied and welcomed.......I am not a network geek, but I do know a bit about computers.
I have Windows 7 on both computers in my office.

WRT-54GS wireless broadband router speed vs wired speed

Why is the wireless speed for my WRT-54GS wireless broadband router about twice as fast as when I connect through one of the ethernet ports on the WRT-54GS? This effects my decission on upgading my family's PCMCIA cards and whether it makes sense to introduce a HomePlug to get the signal to my desktop PC.
And why is my DSL modem coming in at 100mps but no where near that after it passes through the WRT54-GS wirelss router?
