WRT-54GS wireless broadband router speed vs wired speed

Why is the wireless speed for my WRT-54GS wireless broadband router about twice as fast as when I connect through one of the ethernet ports on the WRT-54GS? This effects my decission on upgading my family's PCMCIA cards and whether it makes sense to introduce a HomePlug to get the signal to my desktop PC.
And why is my DSL modem coming in at 100mps but no where near that after it passes through the WRT54-GS wirelss router?
Thanks, lpb

I alreadt have V.6. I don't see a firmware update on the Linksys site later than that.

I have a Cisco/Linksys WRT-54G wireless router and 2 Airport Extremes (the small ones that plug directly into the wall). Is it possible to extend the network from the router using these two AEs? I have a DVD player and Ext HD plugged into the router too. Any ideas? I'm guessing the only way is to do what I've seen in these community pages which states that it can be done but it will drop the bandwidth by 50%. Thoughts?? Thanks!

The Cisco/Linksys WRT-54G was one of the very few routers said to be compatible with Apple's implementation of WDS (Wireless Distribution System) settings.
The info that I have on file indicates that only the WRT-54G versions 4 and under were compatible, so that would be one bridge to cross.
Even if you find that your Cisco/Linksys might be the right version, Apple never published instructions on how to configure the Express devices with other manufactures, so users were left to their own devices to try to figure out how to get things working. Apple's instructions to connect to other Apple devices are in the link below:
    WDS network
If you were hoping to use 2 Express devices in this type of configuration...even if it works...the bandwidth penalties will be extremely severe.
The first Express drops the bandwidth (and speed) on the entire network in half and the second halves everything again. So, the result, in effect would be a "g" wireless network running at 25% speed. Few users would consider installing this type of network.
At this point, it becomes one of those things where the fact that you might be able to do something does not mean that there would be much value in doing so. But, it is your decision to decide if you want to try to proceed.

  • I have been using WRT54G wireless broadband router and WU...

I have been using WRT54G wireless broadband router and WUSB54G on my home PC for the last 2 years. It was working fine until recently I encountered serious connection problem.
The WUSB54G cannot connect with WRT54G.
Error message " Cannot assocaite with the access point.
I have checked the followings to try and solve the problem.
    1) Refresh site survey the WUSB54G does not show my SSID, but it can show my neighbour'sSSID.
    3) When I use my notebook with built-in wireless network adaptor to access wirelss broadband there is no problem at all. I can access my SSID.
    4) I have try reseting the WRT54G and changing password but still can not solve the problem.
    5) Uninstall and re-install
    5) I have installed a new USB adapter (WUSB54GG) thinking that it could be the old WUSB54G is faulty. But still encounter same problem.
I am using Window XP Professional. What could be the problem?
Please provide your professional advice. Thank you.

  • MI424WR (Rev. F) - Wireless Broadband Router - Need Rev G for NAS

I want to put a Buffalo NAS storage device on the USB port on the MI424WR (Rev. F) - Wireless Broadband Router, but Actiontec says a firmware upgrade to Rev G is needed to do this. If I do the upgrade (will it even allow it?) will I trash my router such that it won't work (and I may not be able to restore it to Rev F)? Anyone have any experience attempting this?

    davef wrote:
Not sure what you mean by "not enabled". I use this USB port on the router to charge my EVO smartphone.
There is indeed power on the USB port, so charging USB devices does work.
What I meant by "not enabled", is that there is no firmware support of any kind.
    No mass storage driver, etc.

  • Have existing wireless broadband router. Installing TC, shall I continue to use my router as before ?

Have existing wireless broadband router. Installing TC, shall I continue to use my router as before ?

Up to you.. the easiest setup is to bridge the TC and plug it into the existing router.. setup wireless in the TC to either act as a new network or complement the existing one.

  • WRT54G ver 6 wireless broadband router throughput

I have a DSL 6 Mb service and the service company (ATT) is reading an incoming speed to their modem of 7Mb but when I connect my PC wireless to the router and run a speedtest I get only 2.7 Mb. at the PC. This is quite disturbing because I get longer times downloading files and I'm paying for 6 Mb.  I'm surprise to see no one has posted anything about speed of service.
I contacted Linksys tech help and they have no clue. I asked for the information that the engineers must have of the broadband degradation to be expected at the output of these units if any. They have no idea either. I can't believe that a company that makes wirelss units has not performed tests in their labs to see what bandwidth degradation the unit creates if any and then publish this information. Its like buying a car where the manufacturer does not know the HP of the engine or how much load it can carry.
If anyone can help me with this I certainly would appreciate it. If degrading the broadband tomore than 50% is normal so be it. I will have to buy another brand or connect hardwired to the service. But if this is the case they should DEFINITELY provide this information before selling these units. By the way this is with only one lap top (Dell Inspiron) at les than 1 foot away. If you connect more than one I assume the Broadband would come to its knees.
If anyone has DSL or Cable and wants to check if they are getting the band they are paying for go to SPEEDTEST.NET and click on run a test and you will get your actual speed for your downloads and uploads. You may be very surprised at what you are getting. Its a neat site and keeps your data and as you continue testing it will give you a graph of all your test and results.
    Thanks

Most wireless users are able to get 50% to 70% of their wired router speed.  A few have reported as much as 80% to 90% of their wired router speed.  So first of all, test the wired speed through the router.  It should be 6 Mbps, or very close to it.
Your wireless speed depends a lot on how good of a wireless connection you have to the router.  A good connection is both strong AND clean.  By clean, I mean that there is no significant other wireless signal that is interfering with it.  Note that having "5 bars" only indicates a strong signal, not whether or not it is clean.  For example, if your neighbor is using the same wireless channel, you could be getting a lot of interference from his signal.
Often, getting a good wireless connection is a matter of optimizing several different parameters:
First of all, give your network a unique SSID. Do not use "linksys". If you are using "linksys" you may be trying to connect to your neighbor's router. Also set "SSID Broadcast" to "enabled". This will help your computer find and lock on to your router's signal.
Poor wireless connections are often caused by radio interference from other 2.4 GHz devices. This includes wireless phones, wireless baby monitors, microwave ovens, wireless mice and keyboards, wireless speakers, and your neighbor's wireless network. In rare cases, Bluetooth devices can interfere. Even some 5+ GHz phones also use the 2.4 Ghz band. Unplug these devices, and see if that corrects your problem.
In your router, try a different channel. There are 11 channels in the 2.4 GHz band. Usually channel 1, 6, or 11 works best. Check out your neighbors, and see what channel they are using. Because the channels overlap one another, try to stay at least +5 or -5 channels from your strongest neighbors. For example, if you have a strong neighbor on channel 9, try any channel 1 through 4.
Also, try to locate the router about 4 to 6 feet above the floor, in an open area. Do not locate it behind your monitor or near other computer equipment or speakers. The antenna should be vertical.
Also, in the computer, go to your wireless software, and go to "Preferred Networks" (sometimes called "Profiles" ). There are probably a few networks listed. Delete any network named "linksys". Also delete any network that you do not recognize, or that you no longer use. If your current network is not listed, enter its info (SSID, encryption (if any), and key (if any) ). Then select your current network and make it your default network, and set it to automatic login. You may need to go to "settings" to do this, or you may need to right click on your network and select "Properties" or "settings".
In the router, be sure to turn off optional services like logging.  Logging should only be turned on for diagnostic purposes, not during normal day to day use of the router, because logging will slow the router.
If the above does not fix your problem, download and install the latest driver for your wireless card.
Some users have reported improved wireless performance by switching to WPA encryption.
If you continue to have problems, try the following:
For wireless g routers, try setting the "Transmission Rate" to 54 Mbps.
If you still have trouble, download and install the latest firmware for your router. After a firmware upgrade, you must reset the router to factory defaults, then setup the router again from scratch. If you saved a router configuration file, DO NOT use it.
    Hope this helps.

  • Slow wireless speed vs. wired speed WRT54G2v1 - 1/2 the rate download

I am having issues with the speed of my wireless connection relative to the wired connection via LAN.  Via LAN I can get 30-40meg download, but with wireless it is 8-15meg.  I reset the router and set it to 50meg transfer speed, but I am lost on the issue with the limited download speed via wireless.  My cable company came out and checked the modem and everything is fine there.  Any help with the optimal settings would be appreciated.

Might be time to get a new router. The WRT54G2 isn't designed for internet speeds over 20 Mbps.

  • Connecting a WRT54G Wireless Broadband Router to a Westell DSL Modem

For some reason I can't get my wireless router to finalize the last step on installation on my desktop. I followed all the tutorials from the linksys help center and I still can't get the router to install correctly. I did ipconfig/release and ipconfig/renew. I made sure the IP address was in the 169.xxxxx range. Changed the default IP on the web based utility from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.2.1  . When I changed all of the info mentioned before I could get internet service to my base computer, but I could not get passed the last step of installing the router and no wireless to any laptops. I have done everything by the book and it still doesn't work. If there is anyone that could help me, I would really appreciate it. I have DSL Internet service throught AT&T. My router is a WRT54G and my DSL Modem is a Westell Modem, Its black square shaped with five lights on the front.

  • MI424WR (Rev. E) - Wireless Broadband Router MAC filtering limitation.

I can not input more than 10 MAC addresses into the  Wireless Settings->Advanced Security Settings->Wireless MAC authetication->Enable Acsess list->Accept all devices listed below.  When click Apply it returns the error message that no more that 10 items can be in the list.  How can  I increase that limit to say 128 ?
By the way Actiontec Support Respose was:
"That is correct. Verizon has limited the MAC Filter programming to a maximum of 10 devices."
Why Verison does that? And how can I increase the limit?
    I have:
    Firmware Version:
    20.20.2
    Model Name:
    MI424WR-GEN2
    Hardware Version:
    E
    Thanks.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

10 MAC addresses is a known limitation of the router and not likely to be changed.
FWIW, filtering of wireless MAC addresses serves no useful purpose.  Wireless MAC address can easily be sniffed

  • Wrk54g Wireless broadband Router

I've just tried the easylink setup wizard and it runs though all the correct lights, light up then it says detecting router, then that changes to connecting to the internet then it changes to the following message Router Not Supported Easylink Connect is designed to set up Linksys networking products if you have an older Linksys product or non-Linksys router, then use the installation utility that was included with that product. Click back to re-detect the router or click Cancel to exit this wizard. I'm not sure how it has worked out that the router is not supported when earlier in the wizard I had to choose the router from a list of supported routers and the Model I have WAS there. any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

First off let me know who is your Internet service provider?
Connect the computer directly to router using Ethernet cable…. Access routers set up page using http://192.168.1.1 ….you will get username & password screen …leave username blank & under password use admin.
After opening the reset page may be you need to reconfigure the router as per Internet Service providers’ requirement.

  • Need Help setting up 2 wireless internet computers with 54g wireless router

I setup the 54g wireless router using the setup disk.  It appears to have worked find and the first laptop has wireless internet.  I am not familiar with setting up a totally wireless network so I am not sure if I did the rest right.  I then setup the 54g wireless internet router on the 2nd computer.  It appears to have loaded but will not connect to the internet.  I looked at the linksys setup etc... for both computers and all is the same including the WPA key, IP address, and the rest.  No differences noted.  I have no idea why the 2nd computer does not have wireless internet access.  It has wired access only.  The 2nd computer shows the wireless network but won't connect to it.  I click on it and hit refresh and nothing happens.  I am at a loss as to what to do now.
With 2 wireless computers, must there be a main computer and a secondary computer?  The 1st computer also doesn't have access to windows network setup for some reason.  It tells me to go to the knowledge base at microsoft.com and look up 871122.  No idea why the windows network setup is not working.  It did work before I got a new cable service provider and modem.  However, the windows network setup is working on the 2nd computer. Any help is appreciated.

does the 2nd computer even need the router info loaded into it like the 1st computer or should it be enough that the wireless network was created on the 1st computer?  In other words, would having the router info loaded in both computers cause the 2nd one to not connect?  I have spent hours on this and I am very confused now.
My router connects fine to the cable modem.  the 1st computer connects fine to the router and gets the wireless internet without a problem.  Again, the 2nd computer shows the network name but won't connect to it.  help please!!

  • Trouble with WRT-54G

I have a new WRT-54G wireless router. I am on DSL. I had another wireless box and it went bad so I purchased the Linksys. Since I have hooked it up my lap top will not recieved data. It shows that it is connected but when I try to bring up Internet Explorer it says page cant be displayed. I have checked my connections but I cant figure it out. I have a main computer hooked on my Westel router and it works fine. Can some one give me an idea what's wrong. I thought if it was connected it should be getting the data.

Check the connection from computer directly connected to Router using Ethernet cable.
If it is working try opening set up page using http://192.168.1.1  ….. You will see username & password …leave username blank & in password use admin.
Click on wireless tab ….. Change SSID to any non-linksys name ….click save settings.
Click on wireless security sub-tab….change security level from disable to either WEP or WPA. Click save settings.
