WRT160N and WET54G

Hi All,
I bought a new WRT160N router, and tried to connect my WET54G. But every time I try to connect it in "infrastructure" mode It jams. And can only work again after using the reset button.
I'm connecting with WPA2 personal (TKIP/AES).
Can anyone help me with this problem?
Thanks.

Hi Matt,
Thanks for your help.
When I'm in the setup screen of the WET54G I can choose to connect to a wireless network, and when I connect to my home router (WRT160N) It will use its SSID and channel number. In the next screen "security settings", I can fill in the encrition. After filling those in, I says that he will restart (WET54G). And after that message the WET54G is stuck. All the greens leds are on, but I can't connect to the IP addres.

  • WRT160N and web page problems

I have the WRT160N and experience problems with web pages loading. For example, when I use this router there are times when I want to go to Facebook and instead I get some odd MySpace webpage. I've had similar problems when trying to access my local news webpage, it loads some sort of other strange page. This occurs on all computers in my network (3).
I've tested this using a Netgear and a Belkin router, and have never experienced this problem. Only on the Linksys. The other routers I have are not N so I'd like to try and get to the bottom of this so I can use the linksys. I have the latest firmware loaded on it.
    Any Ideas?

The issue I am experiencing has occurred on all three computers in my home. Two desktop computers and one laptap. They are clean from viruses and spyware, I can assure you of that.
I did try the suggestion of reseting the router, and then re-flashing the lastest firmware. Much to my dismay, this has not solved the problem. I have taken a screenshot to show you.  If you look at the address bar, that is where I am trying to go, but you will see that it did not bring up that page. For some reason it took me to some Microsoft website this time around.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. I really want to get to the bottom of this.
** Edit ** I have noticed that if I go into CMD and run ipconfig /flushdns and close and re-open the browser the problem is corrected. I have used both DNS servers from my ISP and also from OPENDNS, with the same result. Maybe some sort of settings causing problems with the DNS?

  • WRT160N and WPA-2 Key

Purchased WRT160N and it keeps telling me that my security key is incorrect.  Security key is not incorrect.  Use the same key on other Linksys routes but this one continues to tell me that the key is invalid.  Any suggestions?

Hey try resetting the router reset button in such a way that power
light is blinking on the router & then do a complete network power
cycle i.e., unplug the power cables from the modem & from the router &
then plug in the power cable to the modem first once all the lights are
solid green you could plug in the power cable to the router & check out
    it will definately work!!

  • WRT160N and uPnP failures

While it seems the opinion of most people is that uPnP is the work of the devil, I find it useful... when it works.
Seems though that my router, when it's not randomly deciding to stop routing, will choose to randomly have uPnP fail on me. The port forwarding works, and then it doesn't. If I go and set the port forwarding manually for the very same port, works just fine.
And while I was typing this out, I decided to muck around with the settings some. I tried turning off uPnP and then turning it back on, no joy. Then I discovered the PC I was connecting from was not in the DHCP table. So I did a quick refresh and viola, I'm in the able. A few minutes later, uPnP started working again.
Won't claim to know a ton about uPnP but is it possible that the WRT160N has some relationship between DHCP and uPnP?

I just talked with Linksys support, and they told me
"it's not actually a firmware issue. It's just that our routers are very secured, that's why sometimes we need to manually open the ports so that the router's heavy security would allow those ports to pass through."
    HUH?
This can't be the case, and even if it was, why have uPNP if it won't work? Further, if I power cycle the router, restart windows, then uPNP works, ports are open everything is fine. However, at some point down the road (say if I enter the router setup for any reason) uPNP breaks.
I was then told how to enter in a static IP and use port forwarding. The method was incorrect, entering an ip into my LAN in Windows. That doesn't work. I had to find out for myself you need to assign a static IP using the DHCP table in the router's setup.
HOWEVER, my sister's cheap Dlink (half the price of this router) works perfectly with uPNP, is Windows 7 certified, and just works. I think I may sell my WRT160N and get that.

  • WRT160N and WRT300N

Whats the difference between WRT160N and WRT300N?

Range, Wireless Connectivity, Stability and Speed of WRT300N is better that WRT160N...WRT160N consist of additional WiFi Protected set-up, WRT300N does not have any such WiFi Protected set-up...I would recommend you to get WRT300N...

  • Upgraded to WRT160n and cannot use network now.

I replaced a BEFSR41 router with a WRT160N and now my wired computers cannot talk to each other. Tech support is telling me this is a Microsoft problem. If I connect the BEFSR41 back up instead of the WRT160n, the network comes back. All computers can access the internet though. I'm puzzled. What can I do to get the network to work?

Check the light status on wireless router ... also check the Ip on the wired computer .... if getting valid one try access the setup page & configture the router ...
Let me know the exact erro you are getting ...

  • WRT160N and 2 Xboxs

    Hello Everyone,
I have a bit of a problem which I'm sure has been mentioned here several times before. I did a quick search and couldn't find anything and have scoured the internet for days with no answer at all. Basically what the problem is, I have 2 xbox 360's in my house, mine and my brothers. Before the second xbox came into play I never once had a NAT issue. Now that there are two xbox 360's if I turn mine on first I get the open NAT and my brother will have Strict NAT and vice versa. Now I know that its a port issue somewhere in the router being that one xbox is taking priority in the ports needed while the other one struggles to get the same ports. I had a wired router a BEFSR81 and had this NAT problem, however I think I fried it up after doing a firmware upgrade over the wireless access point I had attached to the router, so its dead and I replaced it with this WRT160N because I heard that any router windows 7 or vista certified will work 100% with xbox live. But with this new router I'm in the same boat except now one xbox gets an open NAT and the other gets a Moderate NAT. Which isn't as bad as the strict problem, but its still annoying. I have tried port forwarding, DMZing, and giving static ip's to each xbox. Still no real answer to this issue. I heard that I should use port triggering to open ports to both xbox's, however on this new router the WRT160N when I click on port triggering I can not enter anything into any of the fields given, its almost like its deactivated. I know it is possible to run 2 xbox 360's on one router both with open NAT because I have several friends who do the same thing I'm trying to do, play a good ol game of Modern Warfare with his brother. If anyone can help me out or shed some light on this issue please do so, id greatly appreciate it.
    Crazed.

ok, so i have figured out that you put the same ports in for both the trigger and forward range. I did as that website said, and still no fix to this issue. One xbox still gets open nat and the other gets strict depending on who was on first. This is getting to be extremely frustrating, no one has an answer on how to fix this. It makes no sence im sure im not the only person out in the world who has more than one xbox in a household trying to play together online. Why doesnt anyone have support for this issue or creat a product that solves this. im sure there are many gamers out there who want excatly what i do. Does anyone else have some sort of idea?

  • WRT160N and intermittent internet connections (even wired!!!)

I just purchased and installed the LinkSys WRT160N router to replace an older Netgear wireless 'G' router.
The reason for the replacement / upgrade was simply to have the wireless signal reach the rest of my house.  We do not have any 'N' receivers/adapters in our devices.
After installing the router, email works fine, but internet access is spotty.
Most of the time when I navigate to a new page, I have to "refresh" multiple times.
My ISP (Comcast) says that everything is fine from their end.
I have powered off and on my modem, router, PC's, etc. countless times and yet cannot get a consistent connection even when directly wired to the router.
Before I return this router and try another brand, I thought I'd post a message here to see if there are any suggestions.  I have not upgraded the firmware and am using the router as purchased two days ago.
I am using Firmware version 2.0.02 and the router is WRT16oNv2.

I have had the same problem...with the same model (WRT160N) for months now (since I bought it). No Problems on the end of our ISP either. Our problem is ONLY when it is wired. My PC is wired to the router. Xbox 360 used to be wired but problems were solved when we bought an adapter for it. All of our wireless works fine. My husband refused to return it since he had no trouble with his Iphone or laptop. The PC still gets shotty connection. We have talked with tech support at both Linksys and Geek Squad (they set up security options for us) with no avail. They had us try everything and nothing worked. Now my solution is to unplug the router and wire my pc to the modem...hoping he will get irritated enough to buy another router and brand when he has to plug it all back in to use his laptop or Iphone. Sad, we bought this one because we heard it was the best! I guess we should have done more homework on it.
I got on here today hoping to find new ways to fix this problem that we haven't tried. So far, no luck. I'm starting to think it has nothing to do with some setting changes and it is just a bad piece of equipment.

  • Problems with WRT160N and Xbox 360 - please help

    Hello,
I have recently purchased a WRT160N router and when I play games online (Halo 3 or Modern Warfare 2) it takes around 10 min to find a game while in the lobby. I don't get kicked out or signed out of my profile it just takes a long time. It says that my NAT type is Open. I have isolated that the problem is the router because if I plug an ethernet cable from the 360 to the DSL modem I find games instantly. I have looked up port forwarding and opened the ports on the 360 and specifically for modern warfare 2 and it actually made my NAT type go to strict, ironic. I have spent 5 hours trying to mess with this and can't seem to get it working right. If someone could please help me on the settings or have any other ideas that would be greatly appreciated.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I have already tried reducing the MTU as well as the Beacon Level, Threshold, and Fragmentation. That did not work. To get the ip address of the modem is where I do cmd prompt ipconfig right. If so, I have not done that yet and since I am at work I will do that when I get home. the ports I have opened on the router for the xbox were 80, 88, 53, and 3074. Like I said when I did that it actually got worse cause my NAT was open but then it went to Strict.

  • Conflict with WRT160N and Windows Wireless Network Connection

I have a WRT160N router connected to a Verizon FIOS cable modem with five computers (all Windows based) wirelessly connected to the N router.  Four of the computers auto detect the N router connection when the computer starts up using Windows Wireless Network Connection and operate well.  One of the computers, which is the only one running Easylink for router configuration, will not connect through the Wireless Network Connection.  I have to use Easylink to manually connect.  The WNC gives a msg that Windows cannot configure this wireless connection and to configure the wireless connection using Wireless Zero Configuration service.  When I configure WZC correctly the WNC sees all available networks and allows me to select the Advanced Wireless checkbox to allow Windows to connect to the wireless network.  However, when I reboot the computer none of the configuration parameters are saved and I am back to manually connecting using Easylink and going through the entire process again.   Any suggestions?    Thx

Uninstall the EasyLink and connect manually. I think EasyLink 3.0 or later is coming soon ..

  • WRT160N and VPN's

Up until recently I was using a Belkin Pre-N cable router which served me well but gave it to my son who was off to university. Decided to purchase a Linksys WRT160N as it appeared to be comparable to the Belkin.
Setting up the WRT160N for wireless access was easy as expected although it doesn't seem to have the same power as Belkin (less signal).
All seemed good upto the point I needed to start work, whereupon I open up a Nortel VPN session to my office and establish a session. Then I start up a Cisco VPN client to tunnel through the Nortel VPN into my customers network, a double hop thing. Nothin new here, have been doing this for the past 2 years.
All seemed to work OK but then periodically the 2nd VPN tunnel would drop out crashing me out of my customers network. Trying to re-establish the 2nd VPN then constantly fails. On investigation it seems that the problem lies with the 1st VPN as I was unable to ping my customers VPN concentrator. The only way to re-establish the session was to terminate both VPN's and start again.
The only thing that has changed is the Belkin router to this Linksys WRT160N router. Infact I'm even considering getting the Belkin back from my son, giving him this Linksys, as it had a stronger signal. So, unless someone can offer any ideas or suggestions the Linksys will have to go.
    Model: WRT160N V2
    Firmware:  2.0.01 build 14
    Date Stamp: 03/10/2008 17:36:45
    Security: WPA Personal

    Which helpdesk was that?
Suggesting to forward TCP & UDP port 50 shows how clueless it is.
ESP is the protocol used for IPSec tunnels. It has IP protocol number 50. It's another IP protocol like TCP and UDP. TCP is IP protocol number 6 and UDP is IP protocol number 17. Forwarding TCP or UDP port 50 has nothing to do with a completely different protocol like ESP. Do not forward port 50, TCP or UDP. It won't make any difference to your VPN problems and will at best be a security problem.
You cannot configure port forwarding for ESP. It is enabled/disabled with the IPSec pass-through option but you cannot define a single destination for ESP traffic. And it won't help you must anyway because running IPSec&ESP through a NAT router won't work.
Remove the port 50 forwarding. You will see it won't make any difference to your problem.
To forward PPTP VPN tunnels, use forwarding of TCP port 1723. Neither the Nortel VPN client nor the Cisco VPN client uses PPTP. PPTP is quite well equipped to run through NAT routers. Forwarding port 1723 would only be necessary if you are running a PPTP server on your computer to which someone from the internet is supposed to connect to. Otherwise, remove the 1723 forwarding. It won't make a difference to the connection with the Nortel or Cisco VPN client.
To forward IPSec VPN tunnels with NAT traversal use forwarding of UDP port 500 and TCP/UDP port 4500. UDP 500 is the port where the endpoints negotiate the connection. The connection itself runs through ESP or with NAT traversal encapsulated into UDP or TCP port 4500. Forwarding these two ports may make a difference to your problem.
Port 10000 is an alternative port for 4500 in Nortel clients. But as far as I know, the Nortel client will only use port 10000 if you configure the Nortel client in its settings to do so. So I would recommend to test if it works as well without port 10000 forwarding.
The fewer forwardings you have the better for your security. Remember with any forwarding anyone in the internet is able to access your computer on these ports.
To sum up: I would recommend to test if you are successful with forwarding App2 & App4 only or if you have configured the Nortel VPN client to use port 10000 instead to forward only App2 and App5. All others should not be necessary. App1 is just totally wrong. App3 would only make sense if you used PPTP which you don't.

  • WRT160N and WUSB600N slow connection

    Im running WINDOW VISTA
    Using COMCAST CABLE
Hi, I got a WRT160N router. Using it with my WUSB600N(running VISTA) adapter. Some how my connection is really slow. I am also using my WUSB54GS(running XP) adapter with the router and connection is good there. I play World of Warcraft, and it lags. I had tried a few methods through the forum but none seems to work.  Here is what I had tried:
    Change Beacon Interval 50
    Fragmentation Threshold: 2304
    RTS Threshold 2304
    Network Mode: Mixed
    Channel Width: 20Mhz Only
Channel: 6 (seems like 11 is much slower)
    Uncheck Filter Anonymous Internet Requests
    Changing the MTU to 1300
Also I upgrade the firmware on the router
    Im running WINDOW VISTA
    Using COMCAST CABLE

Are you facing the same problem on your XP as well as on your Windows 7 computer? If only on your Vista Computer, then you can try to Update the drivers for your Wireless Network adapter on your Windows 7 Computer. Once the drivers is updated on your computer then you can check the speed on your computer.

  • WRT160N and Two PS3's

I have two ps3's on my wrt160n router and one will get open NAT and the other will have STRICT NAT, I have tried putting the other one on the DMZ but I get the same thing, is the wrt160n not made to have this type of set-up? here whats connected: two computers, two ps3's, a psp and a ipod, can any help with this? oh! the game this is happening with is Call of Duty Black Ops.

Try to upgrade/re-flash the firmware on your router.
Connect the computer with the Ethernet cable to the router.
Download the latest firmware from Linksys website and save it on your computer. Open the setup page of the router. Click on Administration tab and go to Firmware upgrade sub tab. Browse the firmware file that you have already downloaded and upgrade it on your router.
After upgrading the firmware on the router, it is recommended that you should reset the router and reconfigure it. Press and hold the reset button on the router for 30 seconds. Release the reset button and wait for 30 seconds. Power cycle the router and reconfigure it.
Also try to change some advanced wireless settings on the router. Click on Wireless tab and go to Advanced wireless settings. Change the Beacon interval to 75, RTS threshold to 2307 and fragmentation threshold to 2306. Save the settings.

  • WRT160N and DMA2100

I jsut installed the WRT160N router and no matter how I configure it I get "Poor Network Performace" when I run the Media Center tool to test my network. If I hook up my old Netgear Wireless N router, in the same location, I get "Acceptable Network Performace" from the Network tuning wizard.
Any Ideas would be great I have two of the DMA2100's and would like the use the new WRT160N for nothing but media and my old router for our laptops.  I have both of them running now on differant channels and differant SSID's.  i can connect to either and get to the net on both.
    Thanks in advance.
