WRT160N - firmware made it a brick

I have a Linksys by Cisco WRT160N V3 wireless router.  Following instructions on the their website, I downloaded their latest firmware.  Again following their instructions, I updated their hardware and the process completed “successfully.”  As a result, the router is completely useless and in the state known as a “brick”.
Having been a Linksys customer since my very first network card, I figured I was in good hands.  Dealing with such a large and successful hardware company for so many years, I figured I was in good hands.  Having been a hardware/software professional for more than 40 years, I felt easily qualified. But, that is where the logic, goodwill and reputation of Linksys goes out the window.
I called their technical support multiple times.  The argument is since the router is out of warranty, even though it was their damaging firmware and/or instructions, it is my problem.  The bottom line is updating their hardware, with their firmware following their instructions, they have damaged my property and claim no responsibility.  Even one of their own technicians told me and I quote, “it happens to us here sometimes too and I am sorry, but there is nothing I can do”.
(Mod Note: Edited for guideline compliance.)

  • WRT160N firmware upgrade

according to the router, I have Firmware Version: v1.02.4-CA . All I can find on the site is
01/10/2008 Ver.1.02.2. Should I stick with what I have, or can I install version 3? I suspect not, but it never hurts to ask. Couldn't find an answer on the foums. ( about going from 1 to 3...)
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

There are several hardware versions of your router. Click on "Where's my model number" on the download page for a detailed description where to find the exact model name and hardware version of your router. If you have only WRT160N on the label, you have a v1 router. You cannot use firmware version for a different hardware version. You will only brick your router.
The latest firmware for the WRT160N on the website is Ver.1.02.2. There is no update available. Your Canadian firmware version is newer. Don't touch it.

  • WRT160N Firmware Upgrade V1 to ???

    Howdy,
    WRT160N with Version 1 Firmware.
My main question is, do I upgrade to the latest Version 1 Firmware or to Version 3? The site says that "Not all versions are compatibale with your device." So, I'm not sure if I can.
The whole reason this came about was that I was  using Easy Link Advisor (ELA) when it said there was a critical update that I needed. I tried to install that via the ELA several times, but each time the network map in ELA would continue to show a red line to my machine and that a critical update was available...something to do with a new software firewall or viris protection as it wanted me to shutdown (actually, I think it said to remove) my Norton. I'm not willing to remove Norton.
Well I'm a Warcraft palyer and I started getting HUGE latency...upwards of 3000 to 4000 ms...
I tried to uninstall the linksys software and the ELA. Then install again from disk with the wizard...no luck. So, I did it manually from the site to Version 1 after resetting the router (already changed my password from the default).
Now I'm here looking to find some direction.
    Thank you.

If your router version is V1 then you have to download the firmware available for V1 and not V2/V3...It will not work...Version on your router never changes, it will always remain as V1(that's the hardware version)...
Firmware could be downgraded or upgraded by selecting appropriate version from here

  • Issue Upgrading Firmware on Cisco 7970 - Bricked?

I recently attempted to upgrade the firmware for my SCCP Cisco 7970 phone to 9-3-1SR2-1. After doing so it will no longer boot. When connected via either PoE or power brick it will just cycle through a black screen and the second line button lights up orange from time to time.
I am not sure if I bricked the phone. I tried both methods of factory restoring - 123456789*0# and 3491672850*#.
I also read a few forms where it was advised to use TFTP32 on a machine to provide the firmware files. I tried this but all the phone seemed to request is the term70.default.loads file and nothing else.
Has anyone had similar issues and were able to resolve them?

The following link mentions a similar issue to what I am having, refer to rustomhind comment.

  • WRT160N Firmware 3.0.02

I was wondering if anyone has had a chance to try this new firmware out for the WRT160N?   I just purchased the router today and noticed it had version 3.0.00 already installed.  Also the Linksys easylink advisor tells me the 3.0.00 firmware is up to date?  Anyone help me with this?

You can upgrade / reflash the router's firmware if you are facing any problem...
Go to website linksysbycisco.com/downloads.........insert model no of your router in serach tab......select proper version of your router........download the firmware file......save that file on desktop
Follow these steps to upgrade the firmware on the device : -
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on a computer hard wired to the router... In the address bar type -192.168.1.1...Leave the Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
Click on the 'Administration' tab- Then click on the 'Firmware Upgrade' sub tab- Here click on 'Browse' and browse the .bin firmware file and click on "Upgrade"...
Wait for few seconds until it shows that "Upgrade is successful" After the firmware upgrade, click on "Reboot" and you will be returned back to the same page OR it will say "Page cannot be displayed".
    Now reset your router :
Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...

  • Possible firmware problem leading to bricked fingerprint reader on T530

I tried to send this through support channels but they told me there was no way to reach any developers through phone support.  One guy said the developers do read the forums so I am posting this here.
Basically this is what happened: (twice!)
I had pre-boot fingerprint authentication and also swipe to power on enabled on my T530.
Everything worked great until I wanted to be sure I discharged the battery all the way by letting the machine power off from a low battery. The way I did this on previous laptops was to just run memtest86 or something until the battery ran out. but since I use the laptop in UEFI only mode memtest86 doesn't work. so I used the built in lenovo memory diagnostics.  after the laptop powered off. I turned it on again. and it quickly powered back off. Afterwards the fingerprint reader refused to work for anything other than power on and refused to be connected to by the Lenovo fingerprint software.
I originally thought this was because I had turned it back on and the system was talking to the fingerprint reader as part of start up and didn't complete since the power went right back off again..
that is until I managed to break my replacement fingerprint reader. This time I just ran the memory diagnostics as before until it turned itself off. (and didn't try to turn it back on right afterwards) This time it also bricked the fingerprint reader in such a way that caused it to keep connecting and disconnecting from the USB bus somehow.
My theory is that either the UEFI firmware or the embedded system controller is not finishing the conversation with the UPEK touchchip that puts it into the low power swipe to power on mode when the battery is critically low and is causing the device firmware to become confused (the fingerpritn reader is not just a dumb reader, instead it's basically a small embedded computer). It's very easy to re-produce this problem. and I wish I had a way to just submit a bug report to someone instead of posting to a forum.
I now have a working fingerprint reader and I've disabled swipe to power on, hoping that this wont come up again. (I'm also going to avoid doing the memory test until power off thing too obviously...) Still I think it would be a simple fix to make sure it doesn't attempt to talk to the fingerprint reader as part of shutdown if the battery is low.
I still have the other 2 fingerprint readers if anyone at Lenovo wants to take a look at the state this leaves them in (although it should be very easy to re-produce this in house)
aside from this I'm very happy with my Thinkpad and I plan on getting an extended warranty and to also make my next laptop a thinkpad as well (assuming they don't do someting stupid like get rid of the trackpoint/trackpoint mouse buttons or decide to start making the thinkpad small and flimsy)

Yes I tried that. I also even did research into the upek (now owned by authentec) chip and found a dagnostics utility that also pretty much confirmed that the chip was failing to communicate. (and gave the same information that the lenovo fingerprint reader gave me) The. First one I killed could be seen but was stuck in the swipe to power on mode and wanted to be authenticated to somehow (error is could not authenticate pasport) before it would do anything else. And both the firmware and the fingerprint software had no luck doing so.
The second one I killed behaved differently, It shows up on the usb bus for a few seconds and then dissconnects and then does it all over again forever. In both cases I believe the firmware inside the fingerprint reader is being confused in a a way that is persistent across power cycles. Replacing the reader restores normal operation again. i didnt bother with thee diagnostics tool the second time incase you think I killed them with that. This time around it had problems booting and had to lift up the keyboard and unplug the cable from the palmrest, reboot and disable the fingerprint reader port before plugging the cable back in to restore normal operation to my system. otherwise it would boot only part of the time. (you could also disable pre-boot fingerprint support and it would also boot fine but then you would see a steady log of it attaching and detacthing in both windows and linux, which ofcourse is annoying)
I have saved those two parts and will ship them to you if you want to look at them.
I seem to have a knack of running into strange corner cases like this since I always seem to use my computers/software just different enough from the averge person to run into things the developers didn't consider.
I have no idea if this thing can happen any other way than the system powering off inside the memory test utility. but I would bet it is possible in other cases and might as well be looked into.
I would bet when you try to re-produce it that it can only be re-produced with the swipe to power on feature enabled. am also pretty sure that what my guess is is likely correct, that when the system forces itself off with a low battery either the UEFI firmware, or some embedded controller talks to the chip to enable the swipe to power on feature and it's powering off before the fingerprint reader is ready when the battery is critically low, screwing up the state of the firmware on the fingerprint reader chip.  when I was doing searching around I was really hoping there was some vendor tool that could reset the chip, but no such luck at least nothing that's public. UPEK was bought out by authentec and a lot of their site no longer exists, authentec also seems to be bought out by digital persona and shut down much of the authentec site as well, and seem to be only licensing the IP of authentec to certain people.

I'm quite astonished by the lack of clarity here - and no response to the follow up question.
I found myself in exactly the same position as this guy, and because I also was having intermittant wireless failures with my router I took a chance and downgraded to the US version.
It seemd to have fixed the problem, but the lack of such basic information from Linksys/Cisco really makes me question my decision to have purchased this router.

  • Firmware 7.3.1 bricks my TC I am ready to sent this piece of junk back!

When I got my TC I went through alot of headaches to use it. I had to get it working by playing with it. The ethernet connection would not work right and after fiddling I got it going, and with lots of pain finally got it working with my macbook and iMac. It was working fine but I upgraded the new airport and time capsule stuff. The backups seemed faster, but then I realized I had not done the firmware part and opened airport utility and it of course "upgraded" the firmware -- NOT! it seems to have messed it up completely! I cannot see it on my iMac now, and only after doing a hard reset I could see it in airport utility in my macbook but not in my iMac, and even then I cannot get it to take the settings I do for the macbook and then it goes into the blinking yellow nowhere land after I do that and the macbook no longer sees it either.
When I had this working prior to this mistake of a firmware upgrade I was using it on an existing wireless network using the airport extreme in my iMac that I run for my macbook and my wifes iBook G4 (all with leopard 105.2 and latest stuff. It had been working fine for over a week once I figured out all the stuff, and it worked better as I mention above with the airport upgrade, but the firmware when applied toasted this. I am finally at my end on this hardware and on monday if not resolved I am taking/sending back and am done with time capsule this product is not typical of my experience with Apple and I am very disappointed with this item.
So I ask for help, if I cannot figure out then TC goes I do not need this hassle, back to firewire drives, they work fine for me and I guess I just will not back up my macbook that often, go find a cheap firewire for it and put my imac back on its external firewire. This experiment is done! And it is a failure!
    Russ Jacobson.

Well at least back at 7.3.0 I am able to back up from either machine fine, and it does seem to be faster with the airport part of update intact. Still am not clear why I cannot update the firmware though, would like to be able to add that as well.
The one thought I have now and perhaps by asking this someone can tell me if I might be on track. My macbook core duo 2 (last June 07) is not setup as a base station. It is just wirelessly connected to my iMac core duo (jan 06) which I am using as a airport extreme base station that works fine hence I do not really want to use TC as a base station. So I have it set to just join the iMac network I setup. Why fix what works so well with little to no problems (except when the TC was added to the mix)? I am not even sure my TC would interface well or not with my Comcast cable modem anyway given some of what I have read here.
So the question is given that apple promotes this as the main base station or another base station to extend a network, I am wondering if my problems have to do with my trying to use this with my iMac base station network? When I first had to deal with the TC on arrival it was my macbook I had to use to configure the TC, my iMac could not see it with airport utility until I used my macbook to configure it. So to me this speaks volumes about something with the way my iMac is setup as a base station I suppose, but it always has worked well and I am not about to get into other TC headaches. I just wanted the 1 Terabyte back up capability and being able to get my macbook , iMac and wife's ibook G4 on one large drive for backup but maybe that is not going to work with the way TC wants to be a base station -- even though you can configure it otherwise, and perhaps 7.3.1 is hitting the same problems with this?
At least my imac is just done rather quickly the latest incremental update (about 1/2 GB) in short order and my macbook is backing up right now. So I will sit at 7.3.0 firmware for now and see if I can get someone to figure this update out?
Thanks for listening to my rants, at least there is somewhere to do it <grin> and perhaps that lowers my blood pressure a bit (important since I do have high blood pressure --under control anyway <grin>)

  • After upgrading my WRT160N firmware, I cant access the router at all.!!

After upgrading I cant access the router at all.!!
I just upgraded the firmware to WRT160Nv2_v2.0.03.007_US_code.bin from a download.
I had the CD ver 2.00.2 build 8 on it originally. I upgraded because the router would have the DNS problems everyone is talking about both wireless and wired. I tried the all zeros 0.0.0.0 and that did not work.
Now that I upgraded, I cant get into the box at all. I dont get the log in screen. I have reset multiple times and power cycled through. The ip I am trying to get back in is 192.168.1.1
How can I get this box to respond?

Are you able to ping 192.168.1.1 from the wired computer...?
Unplug the modem from the router,hard-reset the router for 1 minute, power cycle the router...Make sure that the computer is connected to the router on the Ethernet port...Now,Click Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >> Command Prompt...A black box will appear(Command Prompt)...In the Command Prompt window type ipconfig and press 'Enter'...Look for Ethernet Adapter Local Area Connection IP Address , Subnet Mask and Default Gateway...
IP Address should be 192.168.1.x, Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.0, Default Gateway : 192.168.1.1......If you get the above mentioned IP Address, Subnet and Gateway Address then you should ping the Gateway, type ping 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...If it gives you request timed out then disable any firewalls, security software on the computer...
If you get 4 replies then,go to start>>>run>>>and type "//192.168.1.1" and hit enter..If you are able to open the linksys setup page then, connect the modem to the router on the internet port and configure the router as per the ISP settings.

  • WRT160N and Two PS3's

I have two ps3's on my wrt160n router and one will get open NAT and the other will have STRICT NAT, I have tried putting the other one on the DMZ but I get the same thing, is the wrt160n not made to have this type of set-up? here whats connected: two computers, two ps3's, a psp and a ipod, can any help with this? oh! the game this is happening with is Call of Duty Black Ops.

Try to upgrade/re-flash the firmware on your router.
Connect the computer with the Ethernet cable to the router.
Download the latest firmware from Linksys website and save it on your computer. Open the setup page of the router. Click on Administration tab and go to Firmware upgrade sub tab. Browse the firmware file that you have already downloaded and upgrade it on your router.
After upgrading the firmware on the router, it is recommended that you should reset the router and reconfigure it. Press and hold the reset button on the router for 30 seconds. Release the reset button and wait for 30 seconds. Power cycle the router and reconfigure it.
Also try to change some advanced wireless settings on the router. Click on Wireless tab and go to Advanced wireless settings. Change the Beacon interval to 75, RTS threshold to 2307 and fragmentation threshold to 2306. Save the settings.

  • Everything works in cascade except I can't access downstream WRT160N

I have a BEFSX41 Router as my main router.  A WRT160N V3 is cascaded downstream LAN port to LAN port.  It is all working just fine with one exception.  I cannot access the WRT160N setup pages. I think* its IP address is 192.168.1.2.  My browser's (Internet Explorer and Firefox) cannot connect via HTTP.  I can access the BEFSX41 at 192.168.1.1 with any machine in my network.  I cannot connect to the WRT160N with any machine. I cannot connect even with a PC connected directly to one of its LAN ports and nothing else connected.  A PC connected to the WRT160N (wired or wireless) connects to the Internet just fine when the system is all hooked up.
DHCP is enabled on the BEFSX41, I think it is disabled on the WRT160N but without access to its setup pages I can't tell for sure.  I have tried soft resets by powering the router on and off - no help.  I have not tried a hard reset as I am concerned that I will lose all my settings and won't be able to get them back.  When the system was put together two years ago it took several calls to Linksys tech support to get it all going.
    * I think it is 192.168.1.2 because Norton Security Suite's Network Security Map reports it that way.  My sketchy handwritten notes from 2 years ago also say 192.168.1.2 in some place but 192.168.2,1 in others.  Anyway, all the above aplies if I try ..2.1 instead of 1.2 when trying to access the WRT160N web page.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Mr/Ms. Dibbler – Thank you for your help. I reset the WRT160N to factory default and followed your instructions resetting it to 192.168.1.2 with wireless.  It all seems to be working well and I can access either router from any PC.  Now for some “fine tuning”.
I guessed at some of the wireless settings and would appreciate your review:
    1) Network Mode – I used Mixed rather than Wireless G only even though my 2005 Toshiba laptop only works in B/G but not N. (The laptop is my only wireless device).
    2) Bandwidth – I used 20 MHz, not Auto 20-40Mhz
    3) Channel – I set it at Auto, I think the router selected Channel 6.  Will it stay there?
    4) Encryption - I used WPA Personal rather than WPA2 Personal because of the age of my equipment – correct decision?
    5) IEEE 802.1x authentication is not enabled on my laptop, the setup tab is grayed out. Is this a problem?
More generally, how does one change the User Name and password used to access the routers via http?  They are set to the blank User name and admin password.  I don’t see anywhere in the many setup pages where it can be changed.
MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) is set at AUTO on the WRT160 and it is disabled on the BEFSX41. Is this okay?
NAT is enabled on both routers, Dynamic routing is disabled on both.
UPnP is enabled on the WRT160n but disabled on the primary BEFSX41 router.  Okay?
DMZ is disabled on both routers, I do not do any gaming.
Considering that all is working well, should I update my firmware? My WRT160N  firmware is at 3.0.02 build 4, you have 3.0.03 available. The BEFSX41 is at 1.50.18, you have 1.52.16.4.

  • Need 3.1.2 Firmware...

The download through iTunes is not working... something with the fact that I bought it once before and now iTunes is pulling an "apple" and will not just give me the #@*% file like I want. Soooo I need to find a place OUTSIDE of Apple which can't seem to make things simple in order to get the firmware and repair my bricked iTouch. Unless of course Apple wants to make the file downloadable and NOT in iTunes!!! Excuse my frustration but I have just lost FOUR hours searching for the file and gave up in a very irritated state of mind.

I'm gonna try and call, get a live person on the phone. I don't want the 3.1.3 I need to restore it to factory.

  • WRT160N Requires Regular Reboots

So I have a WRT160N firmware v3.0 wired connection to my PC, and at least once a day my connection speed drops from 2mbs down to almost dial up speeds at 60kps.   Just unplugging the router then plugging it back in seems to fix it every time.   I've contacted my service provider and they say there's no issue on their end, and since I don't get this problem when I plug the modem directly to the PC I agree with them.    I've done a factory reset and that didn't help.  I've gone through the FAQ and can't find anything useful in there.    Has anyone experienced this before, or know of a possible solution?
