WRT160N installed - lost file sharing capability

Upgraded from Linksys WRT54GS to WRT160N - All computers conect to Internet but cannot communicate with each other - no file sharing, no printer sharing.

Disable File and Print sharing on all computers, reboot all, re enable File and Print sharing on all computers.  Check your firewall settings to make sure all computers are trusted.

  • Lost all file sharing capability

This morning I added security to my Airport Express (WPA/WPA2 Personal) and now none of the three Macs on my network can be shared with any of the others; all have file sharing turned on, but when I enter their names I get "Connection Failed."
All three have been rebooted and file sharing has been turned off and back on on all three.
All have internet connections, just not one to the other.
Please help. My wife and I are older and running up and down stairs to work on separate computers is a hardship.

    Update:
I discovered that I needed to RE-connect to the network after changing the Airport settings, so two of the three computers are now talking to each other.
However, the third--and most important--is not on the network at all. No internet, to interconnectivity. Network System Prefs shows Airport "On but not connected to a network." When I try to connect to the network, I get an error. This same machine worked fine this morning.
The troublesome machine is a PowerMac G4.

  • OS X Server 3.01 Install and File Sharing Problem(s)...

Greetings...Apologies in advance for the lenght of this post...but I wanted to provide as much info as possible to the community to see if someone can see what I may be doing wrong.
My goal:  Replace an existing iMac running Mavericks Server v3.01 that I use for Open Directory & file sharing with a new Mac Mini Server (late 2012) running Mavericks Server v3.01.  Once new server is working and users defined...I will copy the users data from the iMac to the mac Mini server...then re-purpose the iMac as a simple client (bound to the new Mac Mini server).
Before we get to what I have been trying...I guess I should ask a few basic questions:
Can you have 2 Mavericks servers on the same Local network?
Can you have 2 servers as OD Masters on the same local network?
Are there any "Best Practices" I can follow to set up the new server on a local network that already has a server on it?
Here is what I have tried:
First off...I assign a static IP address to the Mac Mini on the router and disable the WiFi on the mac mini.  I am using a direct ethernet cable connection from the mac mini to the router.
Next, I intall Mavericks client and configure that.  I download Sever from the App store and install it.  After it is installed...I run the "ChangeIp -CheckHostName" command in a terminal window and it reports that the "Names are the same" or something to that effect.
Next up...I turn on Open Directory and set up a OD Master...using essentially all the defaults.  I then turn on file sharing and set up a share for the "Users" folder and set that share to use AFP & SMB and to also use it for Home folders.
I then set up a test user as a "Local Network user" and specify that the users home folder is on the "Users" sharepoint.
Once that is done.  I logoff the admin account on the server.  I then go to my macbook pro and bind it to the server (Users/Login options).  I see the server identified as "Mac-Mini.home", select that and it shows a green dot next to the server...which I interpret as it was bound successfully.
I then log in to the newly created network user from newly bound macbook pro.  No errors are reported and I seem to be functioning fine.  I can use Safari.
As a functional test (lame ... probably)  I try to log in from a bound client, save a text text file to the documents folder. Log out as the user on the bound client...Then I log in as that user on the server to see if I can edit/update that same file from thedocuments folder.
However, when I launch the TextEdit app on the bound client, it appears briefly on the Dock...then crashes with a system error.   I tried to read the error...but it looks greek to me.  I did see something to the effect "operation not permitted...".
I logoff the bound macbook pro.  go to the server and log in as that newly created local network user.  I get logged in.  I am able to launch Text edit when logged in as the user.  I can add text...save the test file to the document folder.  Everything looks good.  I just cannot seem to log in as the user from both the bound client and the server and have it work normally.
So...I am obviously not doing something either in the correct order, or not configuring a service correctly...something I am doing wrong.
    Any suggestions are appreciated.

A NAS should work. A proper file server will cache active files in memory. So it's not obvious use of SSD storage will speed your service. In any case figure out how to back it up and most important how you will recover after a disaster requiring full recovery.

  • Personal File Sharing: Lost Connection

I'm trying to use my new miniStack external HD attached via Firewire to my Mac mini as a pseudo network drive. In other words, I want that drive available to my mini and my two iBooks. If I can get that working, I'd like it available to my XP box as well.
I have wireless internet via an Airport Express and cable modem throughout the house. All four computers are attached via wireless cards.
I've turned on personal file sharing on the mini using my administrator log in. I've also activated AppleTalk via the Airport settings in the Network preference settings.
I've also activated AppleTalk on my iBook and turned on personal file sharing.
All my Macs are running the latest version of OS X (10.4.7).
I restarted both machines after making the above setting selections. I then used the Finder on my iBook to search for the mini. I clicked on the Network icon, found 'servers', 'library', and the following folders: "home" which has my XP box readily accessible, "My Network" and "Workgroup". Each of these last has an icon for my mini.
When I double click on my Mini, it shows me all volumes on it, including my miniStack. I select one to connect to and get a beach ball followed by an error message saying "Server Connection Interupted: miniStack" and a single button marked 'disconnect'.
After I press the disconnect button (my only choice) I notice that personal file sharing on my mini is now turned off.
This exact same thing happens when I try to access the native internal HD on my mini so it isn't just the external stack that's the problem.
I've searched high and low through the fora here and can't find anything addressing this.
Does anyone have any idea what I'm doing wrong?
    Thanks and take care,
    Jeff

After much trial and error, I finally resorted to doing a Archive and Install on my mini. After doing so, everything works great. I still have no clue what the problem was but I now have no interest in finding out since it's working great.
Of note, the lost connection problem was unidirectional. I had no difficulties logging onto and accessing anything on either of my iBooks from my mini. Just the other way around.
    Take care,
    Jeff

  • Dups, sharing problems and lost files on NAS drive

I have been trying ot set up a "shared library" on a network storage drive.  The process has been painful to say the least I have over 17k music files and 400+ audio books.
My first problem was creating duplicate files when pointing a new PC to iTunes media files. After trying multiple 3rd party software product unsucessfullly I finally bite the bullet and used the iTunes feature display duplicates feature.  Because I did not want to delete compliations and greatest hits dups I had to browse dups by album and manally sort through over 7,000 songs. Took me a week to complet but I did it. The larger problem I am now facing is lost files.
I sucessfully had both compurter pointed to the same media folder and everything was working great until I accidentally selected all of my file (yes 17,000+) and proceeded to delete them. I was trying to deleted all of the songs in a album that was duplicates... I caught my error only after a few secs but I am afraid the damage is done. The weird part is the songs are still in the library in iTunes but I now have close to 5,000 missing files icons and when I look for the files in the album folder, they are missing.  What is more irritating is not every song from every album is missing. so If I reimport from the original cd (I hope they are not too scratched) it creates dups of the file that are already there and I have go through and do a manual dup clean up again!!!
Anyone have a thought as to where the missing files are (they are not in the trash under deleted files).
Anyone know of a better way to share a large library between mutliple computers and iOS devices without haveing to have multiple copies to sync(i.e. Home sharing).
ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!

    Hi Rajnish,
As you mentioned "quota limit", it is set via FSRM or specific function on NAS?
Meanwhile could you confirm the number 185GB is accurate? Sometimes a part of used space is just not calculated. You can confirm with checking the total space on NAS locally.
If the number is correct and quota is set via FSRM, check if it is the Disk Quota which not re-calculated the released space. Try to clear the Quota setting and reconfig with 300GB limitation and see if issue still exists.

    Hi fremley,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
This article may be helpful with determining why your Mac Pro doesn't stay in sleep mode:
Mac OS X: Why your Mac might not sleep or stay in sleep mode
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1776
Some things reset the sleep timers, preventing the computer from sleeping:
Hard drive access (even if you're not using the computer, a running application might be accessing your drive, such as when downloading a large file or listening to music in iTunes)
Moving the mouse or using a portable Mac's trackpad, pressing a mouse button, or pressing a key on the keyboard
Some System Preferences settings (see below)
    Open applications (see below)
    Input devices (see below)
    Expansion cards (see below)
Additional drives, such as USB, FireWire, DVD, or CD drives (see below)

  • Why have I lost PDF printing capability through the File Print menu?  When will it be fixed?

Why have I lost PDF printing capability through the File>Print menu?  When will it be fixed?

What app are you using to view PDF files? Preview can be a poor choice for some PDF files - I recommend using Adobe Reader - http://get.adobe.com/reader/ - perhaps it will solve your printing problem.

  • Accidental Server Install - No More File Sharing

    Hello All,
I was about to install from my iMac to a Mac Pro Snow Leopard Server but I accidentally installed it over my Snow Leopard version. The install didn't ask again and just installed it. Everything worked fine but I didn't want to have Server on my machine so I made a time machine backup and reinstalled snow leopard and reconfigured the system from the time machine backup.
Everything works except file sharing. It is really annoying since no one in my workgroup can connect to me anymore. I tried everything from deleting system preference, checking firewall settings etc. but I can't find a way to get it working again.
I just want to avoid reinstalling the whole system because there is too much to reinstall.
Yes, totally stupid that I installed server but it should ask if one is sure to put it over snow leopard.
    Help would be great!
    Thanks,
    Mik

Functionally, I don't believe so. If you're able to back up and restore your Macs over your LAN using File Sharing then the Time Machine Service in OS X Server won't do you any good.
I use OS X Server and the Time Machine Service for back ups/restore. I know I can restore any Mac client as long as the server (Mac Mini) is up and running. I simply select the network back up while in the Recovery HD of the client, log into it and select the date I want to restore. I don't know how File Sharing works if you have to restore one of your Macs from the Recovery HD.

  • When updating iTunes to 11.4 I get the following error:  "Files Shared by these updates" has an invalid signature. It will not be installed. Running Windows 7 64-bit.

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

  • Best Practises for File Sharing and Print Server on Windows Server 2012

Is it better to have File Sharing and Print Server installed on the same Windows 2012 Server ?
Or, they should be installed on 2 different Windows Servers ?
    Hussien Sherief

It will work just fine to combine them.
But most people would recommend keeping functionality separate... if the budget allows.  That whole "single point of failure" concept.  If that server dies, you've lost both of those functions.
