WRT160N keeps disabling wireless security

Hello,
I've had a WRT160N v3 for a couple of years, and I've noticed that the wireless security setting is often set to disabled when I go into the configuration, even though I've set to enabled previously.   It goes like this....
I've setup the router to have WPA2 Personal security enabled, with a passphrase.  I have several devices that use wireless that connect to it everyday.  I recently received a new device, so I went into the Linksys configuration to get my passphrase, and the Security is set to disabled.  So, I enable it again, configure a the device, and have no problems.
This has happened many times.  I just happen to be in the router configuration and check the wireless security tab, and it is set to disabled.
My first thought was that maybe there had been a power loss (although, I can't remember the last power outage we had in my area).  However, every other setting was retained, so I can't see why this would be the only one that changes (and it's a rather important setting).  Additionally, I was configuring a blue-ray player last night, trying to see if it was better with a wired setting from another Access Point, and the setting was disabled, so I enabled it again.  I made changes to the BR player, then changed it back to a wireless connection.  I checked the security setting on the Linksys, and AGAIN it was disabled.
I have the latest firmaware installed.
Does anyone have advice?
Thanks!

Hi oook,
I have Ver.3.0.03 Build 3 (the latest).  I had updated it last year when it was released.  I'm not trying to do any port forwarding, though.

So before upgrading the firmware of your router, your computer must have an active Internet connection to download the firmware file. Once the firmware is downloaded, you can proceed with the firmware upgrade even without Internet connection.
Here is the link from where you can download the firmware: http://homesupport.cisco.com/en-us/support/routers/WRT160N
Here is the link for the steps to upgrade the firmware: http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?pid=93&login=1&vw=1&app=search&articleid=4030&userrole=Linksy...
After upgrading the firmware reset and reconfigure the router once and then try to do the port forwarding...

Try to re-flash the firmware of the router once again. The re-flash process means that you will be updating your firmware with a version that is similar to the one that you are currently using.  A firmware re-flash will help in fixing the script of your device’s current firmware. • Disable wireless security

So it looks like the Verizon router will allow you to use WEP or WPA...but not neither. When I disable WEP it turns WPA back on! Is there any way to just have a plain, open wifi access point? This is the only router I've ever heard of that doesn't have that 'feature'...and it's pretty sad when lacking a feature becomes a feature itself.
    Edit:
Would probably help to know the router model, huh? It's the Actiontec MI424WR Rev. 1

Why would you want just an open internet connection to your internal LAN?
Big security issue #1. #2 Allowing others to use Verizon's Internet without paying for it, I am sure is against the Terms of Service.
Now if you had another router, and double NAT with nothing else connected to the Verizon router, I quess security would not be an issue, unless you wanted to assume blame for anything someone else did on the connection.
According to the TOS below. I would say it may be in the firmware, and preventing you from violating the TOS, and requiring a password or some type of security to use the connection. I have not tried to turn it off. But have turned off WiFi completely with no issues.

  • WRT160N keeps losing wireless signal

I'm not sure what it might be - the "wireless" light always stays on but my wireless devices continually get kicked off and then lose their connection for quite some time.  even powering off the router and waiting doesnt bring back the connection - my wired devices have no problem staying connected though.  Do I have a bad router or what might be causing the disconnect?
    Thanks!

  • Express unable to connect to Extreme when wireless security enabled

I have an Airport Extreme base station enabled as a WDS and communicating with an Airport Express which all works great to connect wirelessly to the internet and to play iTunes music on my stereo. The problem is that whenever I enable wireless security on the base station in an attempt to set up and maintain a private connection, the Express blinks amber, cannot recognize the network set up by the base station, and fails to work with iTunes. When I disable wireless security, it goes back to working again. I've tried re-enabling WDS and all kinds of other things, but to no avail. I'm thinking that somehow the Express must be authorized to communicate with the base station, but I don't know exactly how to do this, and the documentation from Apple is not clear on this. Can someone advise? Thanks.

The reason the Airport Express loses its connection is that it doesn't know the password.
You have two ways of doing this.
    1. When adding security to a WDS network, add it to the remote nodes first then turning them off, before adding it to the main base station and turning the nodes back on.
    2. Hard/Factory reset the Airport Express nodes and then reconfigure the main base station before then configuring the reset Airport Express units.

  • Wireless Security & WRT160n

Hello, I just moved into a house with 6 other people and we're all using the WRT160n to share a dsl connection wirelessly (except for two people who are wired), and I can't enable wireless security without having issues. I've tried WEP, WPA, and WPA2 encryption; when I enable it, I can connect to, and see the network perfectly fine, but there isn't any internet connectivity. Again, I actually connect to the wireless network, but there is no internet access when I enable encryption. When security is disabled entirely, we have full internet connectivity. Does anyone have any advice? It's the same issue for everyone here, and it's lame because we think our neighbors are mooching off our connection. Really appreciate the help.

    Try this settings ...
    Click on Advanced Wireless
settings>>Change the Beacon Interval to 75 >>Change the Fragmentation
Threshold to 2304 Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 >>Click on "Save Settings"

  • WRT160nV3 wireless security repeatedly disabling

I have the WRT160nV3 and am having a problem with the wireless security.  I set up the wireless security but everytime I notice the signal slows down or I get dropped I go to check it and it shows the security is disabled.  Sometimes other people are there so I remove them, and ENABLE AGAIN.  After that it seems to work fine.
I have had to do this multiple times.  After Enabling I have saved the settings everytime but it happens all the time now.  Does anyone have any insight?  Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Hard reset the router by pressing the reset button for 30 seconds and release.  Wait 10 seconds and power cycle the router.  Connect via wired computer to 192.168.1.1 username blank, password 'admin' and reconfigure the router from scratch.  Now check again.

  • Facetime works with wireless security disabled, dropped otherwise

On a D-Link DIR-615 wireless router, configured as an access point.
    Security mode: WPA-Personal
    WPA mode: WPA2 Only
    Cipher type:AES
I tried inserting a 1.3 Mb file, to no avail.
I have an iPad mini with OS 8.1.2
Please let me know if more information is req'd.
To have facetime with my son and grandchildren I have change the security mode to 'none' during the session! Really? If I do not, we have about a one minute session that is dropped.
    Any ideas will be explored!
    Thanks in advance,
    Grandpa Pete

    Three answers:
1-The router is an access point as it is a 'slave' to the wired router. The wired router assigns the ip addresses and is connected to the Comcast-Arris modem.
2-Security mode options: None, WEP, WPA-Personal, WPA-Enterprise and
the password options are Auto (WPA or WPA2), WPA2 Only, WPA only. I chose the WPA2 only as some other place I'd seen something about a problem with the TKIP cipher. I'm a novice, though. What you're suggesting makes sense and I'll try to go to WPA only.
3-I tried inserting a file showing the wireless router setup page, via a screen shot. I can't even insert a half Mb file, for whatever reason. The error page says to keep it to less than 2 Mb.
-As above, the wireless device must be an access point. It's in the living room, where wireless devices are mostly used. The wired router is in one corner of the house, with the main winxp pc.
-I can't make the wireless router security mode WPA2, so I used WPA for everything and see if it works for the next facetime session. All the other wireless devices are now functional.
-I'm not understanding the third option. Is that for my tower, each wireless device?
(No, winxp is not a joke. I use it as my main pc os and have no need to replace it. I'm posting my problem in this forum because we now have an apple product, the mini iPad, and I'd sure like to use it for the facetime with the wireless security setting on during the session. So far, it's REQUIRED to turn the wireless security off to keep the facetime session longer than about 60 seconds.)
Thank you very much for your time! I really appreciate it. As a novice, routers are still mysterious to me, what with all the settings inside of them.
    Grandpa Pete
btw: my question is not solved. Not at all! I still believe I have an unsolved question. I don't know why the green box and checkmarks exist! Did I miss something?

  • WRT54G keeps resetting the SSID name and wireless security

Over the past few weeks, my WRT54G (which I've had for about 18 months) has been resetting itself by changing the SSID name back to the default "linksys" and losing wireless security. I have updated the firmware.
Any ideas of what is going on here?
    Thanks.

After a firmware upgrade, you must reset the router to factory defaults, then setup the router again from scratch.  If you saved a router configuration file, DO NOT use it.
Routers seem to be sensitive to electrical surges and noise. This can cause them to loose their settings. You should keep your router plugged into a high quality surge suppressor with EMI/RFI filtering, such as the Belkin SurgeMaster Gold Series. A surge suppressor alone is not enough because surge suppression does not start until the voltage exceeds 330 volts. Alternatively, most UPS devices have both surge suppression and EMI/RFI filtering.
If this does not prevent your router from "forgetting" its settings, then the router is malfunctioning, and it should be replaced. A router that forgets its settings is not secure.

  • Router BEFW11S4 v2 Wireless Security Becomes Disabled

Hello: I have a BEFW11S4 router. I recently enabled the wireless security on it. I used WEP with a passphrase. Everything went fine. I was able to connect with the key. How does it come that my wireless is soooo baad on the U330p. It seems like i'm not the only one with that problem ? I have tried the settings you guys recommended to another guy in here with the same problem. But still it keeps disabling it self and i get the message that there is a problem with the wireless device or the driver. I even have the latest drivers.

    Hi,
You should try to disable the power management functions of the WIFI adapter. Go to the Device Manager (Run > execute devmgmt.msc to open) > Network Adapters > right click on your adapter and Properties > Power Management tab > uncheck Allow this computer to turn of this device to save power. Then reboot, check if the setting is still unchecked.
    Worked for me.
    Good luck!

  • How can I disable wireless admin privileges to the router ?

For the sake of better security, how can I disable wireless admin privileges to the router so that the router can only be configured via hardwire connection?
Sorry, but this is not possible.
If you want to limit access to administration of the router, you should change the Base Station password, and only give out that password to those individuals that you want to have access to the administration settings of the router.
The forums have been having problems displaying screenshots, but we will attach one below in the hopes that the problems may be fixed.
Important Note.......even with this,  "security" on the AirPort routers is an illusion.......since a one second press on the reset button will give any user 5 minutes of free access to go in and change any settings that they want.
So, you might want to keep any eye on things.

  • WRT54G: How to disable wireless upon reset

Hello everyone. I have a two-part question as follows:
Part 1: has anyone ever had a problem with a WRT54G router "forgetting" its settings and reverting to the defaults even though you did not press the Reset button? I have had two different people tell me that they configured wireless security but then after several weeks/months the security settings "vanished" and their wireless network was open with no encryption. Is it possible that a brownout or extended blackout could cause this?
Part 2: due to the possibility of this happening, does anyone know how to configure this device so that if it IS reset (i.e. pressing the reset button or anything else that causes a reset), the wireless radio will be disabled until a user MANUALLY logs in via a wired connection and turns it on, or presses the easy setup button? This would prevent a LOT of security problems where people just don't know any better and plug up the router without configuring the security properly. I think linksys should build this option into their firmware: disable the wireless radio until it is manually turned on by either logging into the configuration page or pressing the easy setup button on the front.
I assume that to accomplish part 2, I need a third-party firmware for the router. Any recommendations on which firmware would leave the wireless off by default when reset?
I would be purchasing a new WRT54G for this application, and it would probably be version 8.
Would another router model be better than the WRT54G?
This is for a small business, and I can't take the risk that the wireless network should become unsecured without anyone's knowledge, maybe due to power outage/brownout/firmware bug/etc...
Thank you so much in advance for any advice!

    1)  Routers seem to be sensitive to electrical surges and noise.  Electrical surges and noise are common with power outages, and can also be caused by such things as large motors starting up, or malfunctioning electrical equipment.   Electrical surges and noise can cause routers to loose their settings.
You should keep your router plugged into a high quality surge suppressor with EMI/RFI filtering, such as the Belkin SurgeMaster Gold Series. A surge suppressor alone is not enough because surge suppression does not start until the voltage exceeds 330 volts.  You must have the EMI/RFI filtering.   Alternatively, most UPS devices have both surge suppression and EMI/RFI filtering.
If your router has forgotten its settings, then you should also download and install (or re-install) the latest firmware.  After the firmware upgrade, you must reset the router to factory defaults, then setup the router again from scratch.  If you saved a router configuration file, DO NOT use it.
If the above does not prevent your router from "forgetting" its settings, then the router is malfunctioning, and it should be replaced. A router that forgets its settings is not secure.
    2)  I do not know of any way to cause the wireless portion of the router to be turned off when the router resets.   In my opinion, this is a security problem, and I agree that it should be fixed.
    3)  Rather than getting a new wireless router, you should consider getting a wired router and a WAP (wireless access point).  The advantage of this setup is that you can unplug the WAP when your business is closed.  This would guarantee that, should the wireless security ever fail, at least it would fail during business hours, and you would be likely to notice it.
Alternatively, you could just shut down the wireless router when your business is closed.
If you decide to stay with a wireless router, you should also consider the WRT54GL.  This router has a good record of reliability and is a favorite of those who want to use 3rd party firmware, such as DD-WRT.
    Hope this helps.
