WRT160N N Router extremely slow connection

i just bought a WRT160N N Router.  i have a 12 mb/s connection.  i bought it through best buy and the sales rep told me it could handle that speed no problem.  well i got home and got it set up, not even close to being able to handle that speed.  i know you lose a little bit of speed by going to a router verse plugging the ethernet cable in direct but this is rediculous.  pages are loading extremely slow, and when i torrent something when i was plugged in direct i was averaging about 1.3 mb/s.  with the router which is sitting 6 feet from me at the moment im getting 80 kb/s at best.  was i told wrong by the sales rep?  am i doing something wrong?
im running a Dell 1535 Studio Laptop with Vista.  thank you for your time.  any help is great.

What is the model no of the Wireless adapter you are using on the Laptop..?
Are you getting the same problem on other computer....?
Try to readjust the settings on the router...Open the setup page by typing 192.168.1.1 in the address bar..Under the setup tab,change the MTU to 1350 and click on save settings..Under the Wireless tab,Change the Channel Width to 20MHz only and Channel to 11.Provide a unique name to SSID and click on save settings...Under the Advanced Wireless Settings...Change the Beacon Interval to 75,Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304,Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 and Click on Save Settings...Under the Security tab...Uncheck Filter Anonymous Internet Requests and click on Save Settings...
Power cycle the router and check...

  • Vigor 120 bridged with EA4500 extremely slow connection

    I've set up PPPoE on my EA4500 router with a Vigor 120 modem in bridged mode and it says an internet connection is established, but the connection is extremely slow on all my devices. When I run the speed test within the EA4500 firmware it appears fine, but I cannot load any web pages on my laptop or other decives because the connection is so slow. The connection is slow with both wired and wireless connections. I've tried changing the MTU settings with no success. I've also tried using a different router and connecting the modem directly to my laptop and using PPPoE within the laptop and these both work fine, so I think it's clear there is a problem with the EA4500 router itself.
    I asked about this on a different forum (http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=66&topicid=112242) but no one could figure the problem out - perhaps someone has a better idea on this forum.
    In the meantime I'm just using the Vigor 120 to authenticate and connect to the internet itself, with the router in DHCP automatic configration mode. I think this is causing a double NAT.

    Reset the EA4500 to factory defaults and update to smart wifi firmware. After the upgrade is complete, reset the EA4500 to factory defaults.
    http://homesupport.cisco.com/en-us/support/ccc
    If you decide you want to try putting your Vigor 120 back in to bridge mode, make sure the vigor 120 has the latest firmware first. Then try MTU of 1492 on EA4500. Or follow this............
    http://homekb.cisco.com/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?pid=80&vw=1&articleid=386
    It's always possible that the EA4500 is not compatible with you ISP's PPPoE.
    You can also try these methods.......including bridge mode.

  • Connection drops or extremely slow connection

    Hello,
    I have an Early 2008 Macbook Pro with Mac OS X 10.5.5. By the time I was running on 10.5.2 my Wi-Fi connection used to work perfectly, but when I updated to 10.5.3 I started to have so many problems with it that I even went back to 10.5.2 for a while.
    I remember posting a thread in a forum and people answered me that it was impossible for a software update to mess up my connection. I proved it by downgrading and gaining full connectivity back. I've also found hundreds of people who have been having the exact same problem, but it appears as if Apple just doesn't care enough to give a definitive solution. Instead, I've tried tons of other so-called solutions from other people, that have not done anything good for me.
    The problem is as follows: I can perfectly connect to my home network, but after 30 seconds- 2 minutes, my signal drops to just 1 bar (from full 4 bars) and I can no longer use it. To fix it, I have to disable my Airport card and then enable it back, to get another 30 seconds - 2 minutes. If I ever get to be connected for more than 2 minutes, my connection gets reaaaally slow (as slow that it can take me more than 5 minutes to download a 100 KB file).
    Anyway, I'm 100% sure this is a SOFTWARE issue since the same computer running on Windows and resting at the exact same place doesn't have a single problem connecting. Of course, it has nothing to do with my router configuration. It is completely, entirely, 100% a problem related to Mac OS X 10.5.3 and above.
    I love my computer in many ways, but this issue has been killing me bit by bit. What does a computer without a proper Internet connection work for? Then you can remotely understand my frustration.
    Please, if you have had the same problem post it here. Apple has to do something about this, because I can't believe I bought such a useless computer!
    Thanks.

    I believe the multiple error lines are caused by me clicking on the AirPort Status icon on the menu bar to check the Transmit Rate.

  • Extremely slow connection to Music Store and Streams

    There have been multiple threads detailing troubles people have been having both with the iTunes Music Store and streaming music via iTunes. Extremely sluggish performance has been reported for weeks now.
    Over the past 3 weeks I've found that a search on the Music Store can take 30 seconds or more. Downloading a song can take minutes. Browsing is extremely sluggish. Sampling songs results in repeated rebuffering ("Network Stalled/Rebuffering Stream" messages), even if one sets the Streaming Buffer Size to "Large". I've tried reverting to 6.0.4 and shutting off the Firewall and Personal File Sharing, none of which had any effect.
    I experience the same sluggishness both at work, via a high speed office LAN/T3 connection, and at home, via a basic DSL setup. The friends and associates I've surveyed are experiencing the same sluggishness. No proxy servers are used at either location.
    I don't know about others, but I've found this sluggishness makes the iTunes Music Store completely unusable. It would be helpful if Apple were to give us some kind of indication as to what's going on if it wishes to retain it's dedicated customer base. If it persists, there are alternatives. (See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Onlinemusic_store#Online_Music_Store_Comparisontable)
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   iTunes 6.0.5 (20)

    Yes it is sluggish at times but far from unusable. Why not select the "Loads ....before playing" option in iTunes prefs>Store to get over the rebuffering problem. I think it is slow due to the popularity and high volumn use that the iTMS gets. Try a different time of day. I use it late at night (USA time) and don't have all the problems that you are experiencing.
    Why not contact iTMS customer service directly as Apple does not currently pay much attention to the forums. The reponses here are from fellow forum users and not from Apple employees.
    By all means if you are dissatisfied with the iTMS then vote with your pocket book and go else where. Last time I checked it was still a free market place.

  • Extremely slow connection In Kesgrave - mainly dur...

    Hi,
    Since the 8th March, I have noticed that my connection after 4 - 5pm is incredibly slow (see below for more details).
    I have checked my speed at 7:30am, just before work, for the last two mornings and my connection resumes at the normal 6.5 - 6.7MB speed. Before the 8th March I would get these speeds during the evening, albeit a little slower as it's peak time. I can appreciate that exchange speeds reduce somewhat during peak times but it seems particularly strange that I'm losing 6mb at the moment.
    Interestingly, a colleague of mine lives a couple of minutes away and is connected to the same exchange (Kesgrave) as me. He receives approx 4mb but hasn't seen a dramatic decrease in speed like I have.
    I've checked the micro-filters, router settings etc as I work in IT, but as it's fine in the morning I wondered if there was a peak restriction on my line or poor contention. I'm always well within my monthly allowance so the first option seems unlikely.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.
    Download speedachieved during the test was - 786 Kbps
     For your connection, the acceptable range of speedsis 2000-7150 Kbps.
     Additional Information:
     Your DSL Connection Rate :8224 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 912 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
     IP Profile for your line is - 6500 Kbps
    The throughput of Best Efforts (BE) classes achieved during the test is - 2.45:17.09:80.59 (SBE:NBEBE)
    These figures represent the ratio while sententiously passing Sub BE, Normal BE and Priority BE marked traffic.
    The results of this test will vary depending on the way your ISP has decided to use these traffic classes.

  • New router extremely low connection.. what is the cause?

    Hello there,
    I bought a Linksys WRT310N router together with an Wireless USB WUSB600N.. but my connection seems to be low all the time!
    When im talking about low, it's just 1 stripe and just 86 mbps (even my junk 35 euro sitecom router with usb seemed to do better). There isn't alot of interferrence, except for a thin wall, but it seemed other wireless connections worked extremelty well in the past here (5 stripes) so I am pretty frightened.
    My specifications are:
    - Windows vista 32 bit
    - Router Firmwareversion: 2.00.00 B0 and also the usb firmware up to date.
    - Internet is connected like this: DSL -> Speedtouch -> Linksys
    I have no idea what could be the problem.. any suggestions?

    Here are some settings which you can try to change on your Router and i think that would improve the wireless signal strength on your computer.
    Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop).In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...
    Leave Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
    For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
    Click on the Wireless tab
    - Here select manual configuration...Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
    - Set the Radio Band to Standard-20MHz and change the Standard channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on Save Settings...
    Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...
    For Wireless Security : -
    Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
    Change the Wireless security mode to WPA, For Encryption, select TKIP...For Passphrase input your desired WPA Key. For example , MySecretKey , This will serve as your network key whenever you connect to your wireless network. Do NOT give this key to anyone and remember the key.
    NOTE : Passphrase should be more that 8 characters...
    Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
    Change the Beacon Interval to 75,Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304,Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 and Click on Save Settings...
    Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...

  • Extremely slow connection to Apple site on MacPro

    I'm connecting from Europe (Poland). I've got LAN connection (i work at university - so it's generally fast) and everything is OK until i try download anything from Apple.com - updates or movie trailers etc. (only from this site!) - it's SLOW (few kB/s)
    I've got few computers in my workplace, every one with different IP but in the same class (156.17.63.210, 156.17.63.135 etc..). Every PC with MS Windows works fine, and do download the same files as Mac but much faster (~1 MB/s). I think difference is only operating system - even broser is the same. I've tried to install fresh Mac OS X (tiger) or use applejack, but did't help.
    Anybody can tell me whats wrong?

    You ought to try just logging into this Apple Forum via Dial-up... talk about slow, 15 minutes some days!
    Might try some tweaks in Terminal, these will all reset to defaults on reboot...

  • WRT54GR extremely slow connection 20kb/s or less!!

    I finaly got my WRT54GR to work on my wired desktop and my wireless laptop.
    but the speed on my wired desktop pc is terrible, for example downloading skype i was getting 20kb/s! thats totaly unacceptable seams i have a 10meg connection with my isp. I also tryed downloading other files from differant sites, same thing around 20kb/s.
    Does anyone have any advice?

    ohai yo!
    ...have you tried bypassing the router to check the connection through the modem?
    if you experience same problem through the modem, then its problem w/ the modem or w/ your ISP. If the connection is fine through the modem, then it might be a problem w/ the firmware. Try to reducing your MTU by 10. if that doesnt help, upgrade the firmware of the router...

  • JDBC MS SQLserver extremely slow connection...

    Hello,
    I have downloaded the JDBC driver from Microsoft (http://msdn.microsoft.com/downloads/default.asp?URL=/downloads/sample.asp?url=/MSDN-FILES/027/001/779/msdncompositedoc.xml).
    I ran it from RedHat Linux (7.2) with JDK 1.4, calling SQLserver running on WIN2000 server.
    Here is my code (very simple) -
    ===========================================
    import java.sql.*;
    import java.util.*;
    public class TestSQL {
    public static void main (String[] arg) {
         try {
         String query = "SELECT * FROM publishers";
         Class.forName("com.microsoft.jdbc.sqlserver.SQLServerDriver");
         Connection conn = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:microsoft:sqlserver://192.168.0.22:1433", "alex", "xxxx");
         Statement stmt = conn.createStatement();
         ResultSet rs = stmt.executeQuery(query);
         while (rs.next()) {
              String pub_id = rs.getString("pub_id");
              String pub_name = rs.getString("pub_name");
              String city = rs.getString("city");
              String country = rs.getString("country");
              System.out.println(pub_id + " -- " + pub_name + " -- " + city + " -- " + country);
         stmt.close();
         conn.close();
         } catch (Exception e) {
         e.printStackTrace();
    ===============================================================
    The result looks fine (a total of 8 rows retrieved).
    But it took a total of (5.3s real, 2.8s user, 0.05s sys).
    In particular -
    Class.forName() took 1.5 seconds,
    DriverManager.getConnection() took 2.5 seconds.
    Did I do anything wrong? (my TCP/IP connection to the database server is fine, and i don't expect this being the problem.) or has anyone had similar experience?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    thanks,
    alex

    hi Max,
    I would advice you to try some other drivers also, before
    jumping into any conclusions.
    Check if there is some problem with your machine and connection setup, you can get at least the evalution
    versions of other drivers.. and do the test with them too..
    Some nice drivers are from Atinav, Datadirect, Inet etc they provide
    evaluation versions also i think ..
    and please tell us the results too...
    Cheers,

  • Extremely slow connection from ipod to itunes

    Im not sure if this the right place to ask this, so i put it in two forum threads. Heres my problem, My ipod works fine, with an exception of few freezing moments while playing much, but thats not the problem. You see, when i transfer my songs from itunes to my ipod, it starts to go, but then my ipod clicks really loudly (for an ipod at least) and the transfer stops, then starts, then stops..and it repeats itself. I does transfer, just unbearably slow, anybody else have this problem? Thanks big time

    I am having a similar problem. I have not been able to sync my ipod since updating to 7.1.1

  • WRT54GS Router -- Extremely slow performance

    I am currently using a hardware version 1 WRT54GS router. This router sends out to about 4-5 computers, usually only 3 at a time, two of which are wired to the router, one being wireless. Up until about 3 days ago, everything has been fine and dandy for over a year or however long we've had the router. However, a couple days ago, the speed has DRAMATICALLY decreased going through the router. I'm talking about a speed of 864ms ping, 0.4mbps download rate compared to a speed of 17ms ping and 14.1 mbps download rate. I dont know what caused this sudden change in speed, and upon contacting live chat, i was told my warranty no longer exists. Tried reseting router+modem, installing new firmware, etc. I still dont know what can cause this sudden change in speed.
    Thanks,
    Taylor

    Have you upgraded the router's firmware based on the version no of the router..? If yes then,reset the router for 45 seconds,power cycle the router and reconfigure it from the scratch as it is advisable to reset the router after upgrading the firmware of the router.
    While configuring the router's settings...Change the SSID to unique name,Change the Wireless Channel to 11-2.462GHz and click on save settings...Under the Advanced Wireless Settings...Change the Beacon Interval to 75,Fragmentation Threshold to 2304,RTS Threshold to 2304 and Click on Save Settings...Also under Security tab..Uncheck "Filter Anonymous Internet Requests "...Now,check.

  • WRT54GS extremely slow, drops connection

    Hi all,
    I have a WRT54GS model 2.0 with speedbooster. It has firmware version v4.71.4. It's worked absolutely fine for 4 years, but recently it has been having an extremely slow connection, if it connects at all. I continually get network time out errors, but it never seems to go away.
    I have reset the modem and router many times, it works fine for a few minutes, and then slows down to its problematic pace. When connecting directly to the modem I get speeds up to 18 mbps, but when using the router I seem to top out around 6-7 mbps.
    The main problem I'm having is trying to connect to Xbox live, with the problem seeming to be an insufficient MTU setting, even though I have it manually set to 1452 with the 53-3074 ports open. I have set a static IP for the xbox, with the router's DNS settings and subnet masks. I have tried everything this forum has suggested, but I can't seem to get my old speeds back.
    Is there anything anyone can do to steer me right?
    Thanks,
    Chris

    Try to upgrade / re flash the firmware on your Linksys router .
    Connect a computer with the Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port on your router .
    Download the latest firmware from the Linksys website .
    Open the setup page of the router .
    Go to the Administration tab and click on the sub tab Firmware Upgrade .
    Browse and Select the downloaded firmware file and do the upgrade .
    After upgrading the firmware reset the router .
    Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds .
    Power cycle the modem and router .
    Open the setup page of your Linksys router and configure it manually .
    Keep the MTU Size to 1365 .
    Also under the Security tab uncheck the Block anonymous Internet Request .
    Also disable the UpNp under the router Administration tab .
    See if that helps you .

  • Airport Extreme slowing down internet connection to a crawl

    Hi,
    Can anyone explain this one?
    Just this afternoon my internet connection slowed to a crawl. Pages would stall loading and I couldn't even collect emails. There was a connection there. A Google search might take a minute or so but anything else would barely flinch.
    So I did a few restarts and complete power downs of all my peripherals, computers and network devices but no joy. I called my broadband provider who did a remote test of my cable modem and confirmed it was responding well.
    So I removed the Airport Extreme from the network and connected directly to the modem. All was fine, in fact that is how I am working now. But when connecting the Airport Extreme back in I have this extremely slow connection. I have looked at both the Network preferences and Airport Setup Utility. Both claim the connection is good.
    I also have an old G4 in another room. It was switched off during all the goings on this afternoon but I powered it up to see if the same problem persisted. Sure enough it does, as it is also connected via the AE. However, the local connection between computers is just fine.
    So how do I resolve this? Why would the AE cause such an internet slowdown?
    Thanks,
    Colin

    I've had similar symptoms on my network. Here are network details:
    Comcast is the ISP
    I have an Extreme and an Express set up as a single wireless network.
    Extreme is plugged in to the cable modem. Express is an extension of the Extreme.
    Devices that are regularly "on network": Mac Mini (G4), MacBook, Mac Pro, 2 TiVO Series 2.
    All Macs are running 10.4.10.
    Symptom: Over the course of 3-6 weeks, wireless access slows to a crawl for the Intel-based MacBook and MacPro, but not the PowerPC Mini. All web sites, email traffic, etc., for the Intel Macs becomes painful: CNN's home page loads in minutes, not seconds, for example. Unplugging and replugging the Express doesn't do anything. Powering off and on the Extreme resolves the issue. For now. There are no pending firmware updates for the Express or Extreme that I'm aware of.

  • Very slow connection - cannot verify my speed?

    I am experiencing extremely slow connection speeds at the moment - to the point of frustration and despair.  I have BT infinity - unlimited and have tried all of the basic tests (turn off/ on etc.)  I have just tried to perform a speed test for my area (which has been done in the past with no problems?).  I am getting the message - you must have flash installed to continue this test - please install and try again.  I am running the latest variation of flash (and have tried using the download link to adobe to update) but when I try again I get the same message?  I am using an imac - running OS10.6.8
    In the last few months there was a problem in my area that caused everything to slowdown - but this resolved itself - and I was able to check all speeds were opperating ok.
    It is now so slow that it is unworkable?
    Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
