Wrt160n problems - slow internet

Sorry if some of this is confusing. Im a beginner at computer stuff but let me describe the problem best I can and what I have done. Im just looking for something to check.
First thing is up until about a week ago everything worked perfect. Now my wireless connection is super slow. Youtube videos catch up before they can load and when I play warcraft my latency is in the thousands and I am disconnected every few seconds. Again, it worked fine for months until a week ago. Websites load slow, I get skipping on skype.. etc.
I checked all the wireless settings and they are default factory except beacon at 50 and the two others at 2304. On the ethernet cable, when hardwired. everything is fine. Only when I go to wireless. My firmware is up to date. and on the comp my connection to the router is full bars. My speed drops to like 9.0mbps. Everyonce in a while when i can get it to work, barely for a few hours it will jump up to like 74mbps. And I am the only one on this network. When my brother tries to get on, he has the same problem so he has been using his desktop for the last week with no problem.
If anyone has any ideas please let me know. Also.. if there are steps involved if you could describe them or link some place to teach me id appreciate it because like i said, im kind of computer dumb.

Open the router setup page and Under the Setup tab,Change the MTU value to 1365 and click on save settings...Under the Wieless tab,Change the Channel Width to 20MHz only and Channel to 11.Power Cycle the router and check...

  • WRT160N v3 - Slow internet

    Dear Staff,
I have very slow internet when connected through this router.
When I connect the modem cable directly to the computer is is much faster.
Via WRT160N router Download Speed: 29,844 kbps
Via modem only Download Speed: 93,851 kbps
This is a huge discrepency. 60,000 kbps!!!
Please advise - as it has been like this ever since it was installed.
    Very frustrated.
    J

Open the setup page of the router and change the MTU size to 1365. Save the settings and power cycle the router. See if that makes any difference.
Is your computer wired or wireless?
If wireless then try changing some advanced wireless settings on the router. Go to Wireless tab and click on Advanced wireless settings sub tab. Change Beacon Interval to 75, RTS and Fragmentation threshold to 2304. Save the settings.

  • WRT160N very slow internet

I just received a WRT160N from newegg. The speed from a wireless computer through the router to a wired computer is fast, but the internet for both computers is very slow. Most of the time, webpages will not load. When webpages do load, it takes a long time. I am on a university network. I have a BEFSX41 which works fine (except it only connects at 10mbit on a 100mbit line). Does it sound like it needs to be returned?

I returned the router. I received a new router. It does the same thing. I have the same problems with my laptop and desktop, wired and wireless. Both run Vista. If I try downloading a large file (linux distro), the speed will cycle. It will jump to about 3 MB/s for a second or less, then to zero for about 2 or 3 seconds, then back up. It will do that a few times before it drops and stays at zero. I have tried disabling wireless and firewall. Any other ideas?

  • Slow Internet On 21.5 Inch 3.20GHz Intel Core i3

We bought another new iMac yesterday - a 21.5 Inch 3.20GHz Intel Core i3, to replace a 17-inch iMac G5 1.8 GHz (always a dream to work with but the screen was starting to fail). Updated the brand new iMac to 10.6.4 and every update listed. While downloading the software updates from Apple, we noticed that the Internet connection was about half as fast as the Power Mac G5, downloads very slow, taking forever. After finally installing all the updates, tried browsing the Internet and same thing - very, very slow performance. No wireless connection - just through an ADSL modem and D-Link Router which has been in use for years. When plugging the old iMac G5 back in, browsing the Internet on that machine is twice as fast.
Why would a brand new 21.5 Inch 3.20GHz Intel Core i3 have half the speed of the 6-year old iMac G5 when accessing the Internet? Happens on both Safari and Firefox (latest versions). We also have a 27-Inch iMac 2.66GHz Intel Core i5 which is lightning fast on the Internet. Is there something wrong with the ethernet cards in these new iMac 21.5 inch models? Perhaps settings we need to adjust? Or just a defective unit? Interestingly, the display model in the store where we bought ours from was also having the same problem - slow Internet. Thought it was just the store's wireless connection. Didn't dawn on me until now.

Hi, are you talking about Wireless connections?
You could reboot your Modem & Wireless Router, Reset your Network & Channel selection-> try Channel 10 as opposed to Auto..
Delete the existing Networks from your new Mac, Drag the internet configpriv.plist (Library/Preferences) to your Desktop (Trash after Reboot & resetting your Internet)-- Reboot & reset up your network details on the new Mac.....
Other than that Return it & get a Replacement, check the Replacement out in the Store..L

Problem: slow connection. I have an iMac (2007) running on Mac OS X 10.6.8. I just had my internet speed increased from 1 to 3 Mbps but my connection slowed down considerably. Do I have to change any setting on the computer, and how?

One possibility is that you may need to "Upgrade" your Cable /DSL Modem if you have an older unit.  ISP's that provide your Internet service in recent years have been switching over from DOCSIS 2.1 version Modems to DOCSIS 3.0 version Modems, which handle the new higher data streaming speeds the ISP's are offering.  I would suggest you call your ISP's Technical Support and inquire about this possibility.

  • SLOW internet while streaming??  Anyone else have this problem??

I've looked everywhere and I can't seem to find anyone that has this problem:
I have an appleTV using 802.11N on a gigabit AEBS, with a core2duo macbook pro. Here's the funny part. It syncs beautifully fast without a hitch. No dropouts or anything. However, while it's syncing, all internet connectivity on my macbook pro is entirely cut off! Websites won't load, email won't send, ichat logs out, everything just goes down to a crawl, meanwhile the appletv syncs very fast. I've tested to make sure the internet connection isn't down by surfing on my iPhone and my mom's imac, and they both have fine internet connectivity while the appletv is syncing.
I've also tested the network speed to and from the airdisk. I assumed if it was my macbook pro's airport card that maybe when it goes really fast, it doesn't allow other traffic. Well, I moved big files back and forth through the airdisk at high speeds and internet seems fine. It's only when it's between the appletv and the macbook pro that the internet breaks...
I also tried it through an airport express with 802.11g and slower network speeds with the same result, so that rules out the base station.
Has anyone else had this problem? It's so frustrating because I have been forced to turn off appletv syncing entirely!

Well I know when syncing my iPhone, I have issues with internet speed on my Laptop (windows based) and also I cannot check email (fails to connect). Once syncing is done, mail works fine and I am browsing at full speed again.
I can only assume the sync process itself on the machine it is on is the issue. I figured it was just gonna be more so for Windows machines as iTunes on Windows is a huge resource hog when doing anything (downloading podcasts, syncing, etc). I just figured my slow internet access was more about iTunes bringing windows to a crawl during the sync and as for email assumed the sync process hoses what ports I can get out on.
Nice to see it messes with Mac users as well
Not sure why you have to turn off syncing entirely though. Won't it only do a sync if something changes? Mine doesn't sit there always sycning.

  • Slow internet problem on my iMac solved by installing Google Chrome browser

Slow internet problem on my iMac solved by installing Google Chrome. My daughter came with her macbook pro loaded with OSX 10.6.8 but running Chrome and she could open all my problem websites instantly. So fault was in Safari. Thanks for all your help.  My original post has disappeared

    Original post is at:
All of my pre 2012 macs extremely slow to load web pages but my son's 2014 mac and my iphone and ipad 2 load same sites instantly

  • Slow Internet after Lion Install

Lion installation was successful on a Mac Mini.  The only problem I have is a slower internet connection.
I am getting about 2 to 3 Mbps for download when it should be about 10 -12 Mbps.  On another Mac stil running on Snow Leopard I'm getting an excellent download speed.  I cannot see how this could relate to the Lion install, but after dealing with the modem, router and checking that other Macs have good internet access, I turned to this forum.
I am using a Cisco Valet plus router.  Lion was installed on a Mac Mini. 802.11g  The RSSI value is -70. Transmit rate is between 12 and 18.
    Any ideas?

    From the menu bar, select
     ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Network ▹ Advanced... ▹ DNS
Under DNS Servers you should have one or more numerical addresses, such as “192.168.1.1” or “10.0.0.1”. What are those addresses?

  • Rainbow spinning cursor and slow internet recently

I am not very tech savvy but I will try and describe what is going on. Recently (last week or so) my computer has been extremely slow and the rainbow spinning cursor seems to appear all the time. I notice it mainly when I am using the internet, mainly because I am mostly on the internet when I use my computer. I believe it is a problem with my computer because my husband has a 2011 MacBook Pro and he does not have any problems with his computer. My computer is a 2010 MacBook Pro, and I ran an Etre Check to see if it helps. I typically use Google Chrome as my browser (we both do) and my operating system is OS X.

  • Very slow internet after installing 10.5.3

Hello all, this is the very first time I have encountered any problems with my Macbook and I am hoping I can get some help here.
About a month ago I came home from college and hooked my Macbook up to the wireless router at home, everything was running fine. We have fiber optic internet so usually my speeds are blazing fast. Recently however I installed the 10.5.3 update and now my internet speeds are very dismal. I am having trouble getting my Macbook to connect to the router at all, much less load any web pages.
I have taken an ethernet cable and plugged my Macbook directly in to the router to see if things load any faster, and unfortunately things are still just as slow over a wired connection. After typing in a URL you will sit there at a blank web page for about 45 seconds to a minute before it even starts loading the page, and when the page does load it takes forever to pull up and images take even longer to display. If it helps at all our router is a dlink DI-524 wireless router.
I was browsing through these forums yesterday to see if I could find a solution to my issue. so far I have tried the following:
-set router to broadcast in G mode only (instead of mixed mode)
    -removed encryption from router
-tried various encryption settings (64 bit WEP, 128 bit WEP, WPA, etc)
-updated the firmware of my router
-created test account on my macbook, opened internet browser on it, everything still runs slow
-deleted cache for safari/mozilla as well as the .plist files, still slow internet
when i called apple the agent suggested putting in my os X CD and do an archive and install, i did and once i was set back to os X 10.5 i was unable to connect to wifi at all, and wired connection over ethernet seemed just as slow as before. when i check for apple updates the 10.5.3 update was my only option, i couldnt choose 10.5.2 so installing that would put me back where i was before.
in the end i set my computer up last night to do a restore from my time machine backup. my machine has been restored to the backup i created just before i tried the archive and install, so im back to running OS X 10.5.3 now.
I'm sorry this post got so long, I just wanted to make sure that I included details of what I've done so far. Again I would like to stress that I am having this problem on my macbook even with my computer hooked directly to the router with my ethernet cable. (using that same cable and hooking up any one of my windows computers in the house results in fast and effortless web browsing so i know the cable is good)

It's not a matter of Mac OS X being "picky" but rather various ISPs not keeping up with changes in the DNS standard.
In the most recent case, 10.5.3 had to revert to a previous method of performing some DNS lookups because various ISPs hadn't bothered to update their servers to handle what has been the recommended way of handling lookups for the past eight years.
OpenDNS also has done a lot of work to make sure their DNS servers work as fast as possible; ISPs have absolutely no incentive whatsoever to provide fast DNS services.

  • How do I fix super slow internet - all browsers are affected

There is some problem with internet connectivity with my MacBook Pro, but I cannot figure out how to resolve it.  Speedtest.net is measuring my internet speed at download speeds of 0.88MBps and upload of .84Mbps.  Other devices utilizing the same router also via wifi (my husband's MacBook Pro for example) are running at 4.08MBps down and 0.86MBps up.
I've tried many things, but I must be missing something and do not understand what is causing the problem.  Please let me know what I need to do to resolved this.
Symptoms are occurring across multiple browsers (see list below), and I also tried the iTunes store and it was also extremely slow to load.
    Safari 7.1.3
    Chrome Version 40.0.2214.111 (64-bit)
    Firefox 34.0.5
    and iTunes 12.xx
Mail program also exhibits a lack of getting and downloading new email that I know if should download, because it shows up on our iPhone.  Attachments in Mail have also sometimes been blank with zero bytes, but if I restart Mail, sometimes those attachment then have data in them.
The Mail problem seems to be possibly intermittent, but the internet browser speed is really a significant and consistent problem.
    I have:
    Restarted our router.  (no improvement)
    Verified permissions.  (no improvement)
    Repaired permissions. (no improvement)
Verified disk (it's okay). (no improvement)
Safari>Preferences>Privacy>Remove All Website Data.  (no improvement)
Safari>Advanced>Stop plug-ins to save power changed to "unchecked" (no improvement)
    Reset Safari (no improvement)
    Quit and Restarted Safari
Firefox>History>Clear History (Browsing&Download, Cookies, Cache, Active Logins)
    Quit and Restarted Firefox
    Chrome>Clear browsing data
    Quit and Restarted Chrome
Restarted the computer multiple times. (no improvements)
Shut down computer, System Management Controller - SMC and Reset P-RAM.  After restarting after this last bit, speedtest.net clocked in a 4MBps when I first launched Safari, but 2 minutes later, it was slow again at 0.93MBps.
    System Preferences>Network
    Wi-Fi is "Connected"
    In "Advanced" -
Wi-Fi: my Network Name is at the top of the list.  "Remember networks which computer has joined" is checked.
    TCP/IP: Configure IPv4 "Using DHCP"
DNS Servers: 192.168.1.254 Search Domains: Home.  There is only one in the list.
Proxies: No boxes checked.  "Bypass proxy setting for these Hosts & Domains: "*.local, 169.254/16"  "Use Passive FTP Mode (PASV)" is Checked.
    Hardware: Configure: Automatically.
Please let me know any thoughts on troubleshooting and thanks!
15" MacBook Pro 2.8 GHz, late 2009 model running OS 10.9.5.  Software Update - everything is up to date.  Including the Security Update 2015-001.  Internet was slow before this last update as well.

Safari is not the only browser that's slow.  Will Safari slow down other browsers even if Safari is not running?  Right now I'm using Chrome after restarting and it remains very slow.
    Nonetheless, in Safari:
In "Top Sites" of a new tab, I held down the Option key and clicked the "x" for every single top site so that the list is empty.  No change noticed.  I also emptied the folder for cache website previews in the library folder, but that has made no noticeable change after restarting.
What do you mean by "sharing your devices?" Do you mean a network?  I don't have any podcasts, I don't know what you mean by this?  I also don't understand refreshing automatically?  I'm not running iTunes right now.
I have taken a screen shot of Activity Monitor after restarting and this is what shows for CPU.  What data specifically are you looking to analyze in Activity Monitor?

  • My 2007 mac pro has a slow internet connection with lion

    Hi:
I've been dealing with a severely slow internet connection with my 2007 mac pro - dual quad core.  I have os 10.7.3.  I use wifi.
Typically, I'll experience difficulty loading websites completely.  Certain sites have a 90% failure rate to load most elements.  Other sites operate quickly from time to time.  Often, a site will simply fail to load at all.  My cable company cannot find anything wrong with my connection and other, newer devices don't have a problem loading sites.  It seems the issue is most likely related to my computer.
Interestingly, I can usually "jump-start" the connection by turning my wifi connection off and on and this will (temporarily) allow me to get an image or video to download.
    Any ideas?
    Thank you for your time.

  • Slow internet connection via AirPort on MacBook running 10.5.7

The internet connection via AirPort on my MacBook is frustratingly slow, and I have no idea why.
I have an AirPort Extreme connected to a Virgin Media cable modem, a new iMac and a two year-old MacBook, both running 10.5.7. No problems at all with the wireless connection on the iMac - I get the full near-10Mbps download speed I'm paying for, despite the fact it's at the other end of the house. Not so on the MacBook, where I get barely 2Mb, even if I'm sat next to the router.
I've had other AirPort problems since the 10.5.6 update - notably one common to a lot of people on here, it seems, of the AirPort dropping the wireless connection every 2 mins. This was only 'fixed' by the fairly drastic workaround of essentially abandoning my user account and connecting via a different one.
For the slow internet problem, I've tried resetting the PRAM, turning off my cordless landline phone, changing the wireless channel - to no avail. I can't test the wired connection as my MacBook doesn't recognise my Ethernet port, it would seem, and hasn't for a long time.
Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

I assume that you meant NVRAM as PRAM is not used with Intel-based Macs. Regardless, network settings are not stored here and resetting it won't really help. The fact that your MacBook is not recognizing the built-in Ethernet port is telling me that may have an issue with the system board ... that may be showing up as poor performance with the AirPort as well. I suggest that you take your MacBook in to your local Apple Store to have them take a look.

  • Mac mini slow internet repeat

    hi folks,
back again with slow internet on my INtel Mini with Leopard installed. Things ALL worked fine after the upgrade but the last couple of days the internet seemed slow (slow page loading). I posted about this previously and found that Yasu and/or OnyX cleared up some digital garbage and restored performance. However, this time, no such luck. Speed tests show the mini to be slower (33% or less) that a similarly equipped iBook G4.
Intel Mac Mini, Leopard 10.5.1, Firefox, Yasu, OnyX. It's not a DNS issue, pages load similarly with IP addresses or words.
    Any ideas? TIA

    Hiya,
Sorry for leaving out some info, I had this problem before and it was solved by Yasu/Onxy. Recap: Mac mini and IbookG4, very much identical set up. Wirelessly, in same location, iBook is >3Mbps in a speed test when Mini is 1.0 (Ibook closer to airport, over 4). Wired, both are 7-8Mbps. Changed DNS things, no improvement. cleaned caches of Firefox, no improvement. Downloaded Yasu and OnyX, ran through both and bingo, the speed on the mini went to over 3. Now: Several weeks ago, upgraded to leopard. No problems on either computer, but at some point, internet on the mini was again slow. (Ibook getting 3-4, mini getting around 1) Cleaned with yasu and onyx, this time no help. I have been using speedtest.surewest.net but just tried myspeed.visualware.com.
    download 292K 1.4M (2 tests)
    upload 1.7M 2.4
    quality of service 83% 30%
    download test type socket
    upload test type socket
max downlaod pause 594 ms 499
    ave download pause 43ms 9
min rt to server 29ms 23
ave rt to server 66ms 26
I have Comcast cable with internet and a new Vudu box (new internet movie download thing--very nice actually). vudu is a wired connection to the airport. I disconnected the Vudu, that this difference between test one and 2, but I don't think it's the true basis for our slow download numbers. test 3, with Vudu reconnected, 1.4Mbps download, 2.3 upload.
any tips greatly tried and reported back to this thread.
