WRT160N v2 as access point inside LAN

I got this router and I need to set it as an Access Point (will not be using the routing functionality) in the far side of our building. Our LAN uses IP addresss in the range 10.*.*.* with subnet 255.0.0.0, so I need to put the access point ino this subnet. The dropdown box only allows me to set some predefined subnet masks, none of which matches ours. So how am I supposed to set this router in our LAN? Please, help!

Set the access point to a unused LAN IP address inside your LAN (not used by any other device nor inside the DHCP server address pool).
Set the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0.
Disable the DHCP server on the WRT.
Connect a LAN port of the WRT to your existing LAN.
The wireless part is bridged into the ethernet LAN. The IP address of the WRT does not play a role here. The wireless works anyway. (Just like you can use the other LAN ports on the WRT to wire devices to your LAN).
The only limitation you have is that you can only access the web interface of the WRT from an IP address inside the incorrectly configured LAN subnet on the WRT. If you have set the WRT to 10.0.11.12/255.255.255.0 then the WRT is only accessible from IP addresses 10.0.11.*. If you computer does not happen to use an IP address inside this IP subnet you must set a static IP address temporarily to access the web interface. But you only need access to the web interface for configuration purposes. After the wireless is configured it works just fine.
Unless, of course you use WPA/WPA2 enterprise mode which requires to contact the RADIUS server. In that case you must use an IP address on the WRT which allows it to send packets directly to the RADIUS server.
Moreover, I would recommend not to use the broadcast IP address of the LAN IP subnet assigned to the WRT for any other purposes. If you set 10.0.11.12/255.255.255.0 I would suggest not to use 10.0.11.255 for any computer inside your LAN. You'll never know what traffic the router may be broadcasting to the LAN and that could become problematic if there is a computer sitting on that broadcast address (which of course is not really a broadcast address inside your LAN).
The other option would be to change the LAN subnet mask and maybe split the LAN into multiple routed networks.

  • I want to use WRT160N as an access point...-but

I can't see other machines on network. I have a cable modem/router with 4 ports. Total of 3 computers (2 desktops wired to cable modem ,1 wireless laptop) Wireless laptop connects thru WRT160N to internet fine. I setup WEP, hid SID, and it still connects to the internet fine. For some reason I cannot connect to workgroup. I tried disabling DHCP server in WRT160N, but then my laptop doesn't get an IP address. For now all I want to do is use the WRT160N as an access point and be able to see local workgroup computers. I'm sure it's a simple setting I'm missing - but to be honest my brain has turned to applesauce and I can't seem to find anyone talking about this type of configuration anywhere. Thanks in advance, _mez

I am confused by your setup.  You said that you have  "2 desktops wired to cable modem".   So, is this how your system looks?
    modem  -------------  WRT160N  ))))          (((( wireless computer
        |   |
        |   |---  wired computer 1
        |------  wired computer 2
If this is not correct, please explain more about your setup.
If this is correct, how is the WRT160N  setup?  Is the modem wired to the Internet port or a LAN port on the WRT160N?  What address is the modem using?
What is the make and exact model number of your modem?   I assume the modem has a DHCP server  --  is that correct?   Also, is there some reason that the wired computers cannot be connected to the WRT160N?

  • RTP300 used only as a access point on LAN with WRTP54G

I have the RTP300 which I want to use as an access point for my wireless laptop to my working WRTP54G LAN. The LAN has 2 servers with 4 USB printers that I need to use from the AP. The LAN is on 192.168.40.xxx but when I put the AP there everything shuts down. Any suggestions on the setup. If I seperate the AP to 192.168.30.1 it works to the internet but no LAN use.

  • Multi access points in LAN environment

I need to implement multi access points in one LAN in long building. I want implement one common wireless network (one SSID, one security and different channels) with roaming. How can I do it based on Linksys products? I'm wondering that I can use WAP300N in Access Point mode but it not support 802.11f. Is any other device which support 802.11f? Maybe 802.11f is not necessary?

If you are connecting the AP's to a switch via ethernet then 802.11f isn't a requirements and you can configure them as you mention.
I did some research on 802.11f and believe that standard was withdrawn in 2006.

  • WRT160N as an Access Point

    Hello,
Is there any chance to use WRT160N as a AP, not as Router? Bought this box and looks like it hav only router function....

Simply turn off DHCP, set a workable IP, connect lan port to lan port and you should be good to go.
That's what I did. All computers on my network, whether hard wired or wireless have full access to shared files and folders and the Internet.

  • Wrt160N as a access point for Canon MP620 Printer

I have a desktop running XP.  I am using comcast as my ISP.  I have my printer attached to my Linksys wrt160N router via Ethernet.  My desktop is also attached via ethernet.  I also have a laptop attached to the router via wireless. How do I access the printer via the router from either the desktop or laptop?  I had it configured properly in the past then lost my motherboard.  Once the PC was rebuilt, I lost access.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated!

I believe the changes should be made on the computer itself. The computers you have are configured to recognize the printer via usb connection. You need to configure the computer to recognize it via the network. What you can do is to reset the printer and run its setup CD on the computer again.

  • WRT160N as Access point

Hey all, The library 2 buildings away (my house, neighbors house, library) has free public wifi. They have a 3com N wireless router. I can only get a signal if I build a cantenna. Now, I am looking to take that signal and enhance it so all wireless componets inside my house can pick up the wireless signal. The way im looking to do this, from my understanding of reading and reading non stop through discussion boards and other internet articles, is to purchase a WRT160N wireless router, download the DD-WRT firmware to turn it into a access point. Now, my problem is that I will not have administative control as the router is at the library and I highly doubt they will let me get into their admin settings. Is there any way this can be done. I am looking to place the 160N halfway between my house and the library. Any information will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

You can use the WRT160N as an access point if you are trying to upgrade the router with dd-wrt firmware as the dd-wrt firmware has the feature to make the router work as an access point. However, while configuring the WRT,you need to match all the wireless setting to WRT like SSID,Security Type & Key,Wireless Channel including the Wireless Mac Address for the router.
**Upgrading the router with third-party firmware will void the warranty period.

  • Can I use my WRT160N V1 as a signal booster/access point?

I have a Linksys WRT160N router that I want to use as an access point for my basement devices. The main modem is a Century Link PK5001A. How would I go about setting this up?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

If the main modem is also a router than follow the Cascade LAN to LAN instructions below:

  • Use WRT110 as a wireless access point to connect desktop computer to a WRT160N network.

I am having a problem setting my WRT110 connected to a desktop computer, as an access point to a net broadcast by a WRT160N. The WRT connects to the desktop computer, but does not see the WRT169N network. A laptop with 802.11g sitting next to the desktop is able to link to the WRT160N network, although the signal is weak, but workable. Has anyone any ideas on how to use the WRT110 as as access point rather than a router. I spoke with CISCO technician level 2, and he says it can't be done. CISCO website for WRT110 describes it as three devices in one, one being a wireless access point. CISCO technician says get a WAP, but I think I should be able to use the WRT110. Help appreciated.

Linksys Wireless Routers (WRT...) are simple access points. They don't establish a connection to any other wireless device. They only allow wireless access for clients. That's the definition for an access point: to be a point of access into the LAN for clients. It is a common misconception that a "wireless access point" would always include bridging or repeating capabilities although that is a completely different mode of operation.
What you want is not an access point but a wireless repeater (WRE) or a wireless bridge (WET) or a combination. The Linksys WAPs are versatile wireless devices which can be operated as access point, repeater, and bridge.

  • WRT160N Useable as a switch/access point but not as an internet gateway?

    Greetings,
Can anyone tell me if it is possible to use a
WRT160N wireless N router as just a switch and wireless LAN access point and NOT as an internet Gateway?  I have a LAN that is not connected to the internet that uses a Linksys switch and I need to get a wireless access point setup so that I can attach a computer wirelessly to this LAN.    Occassionally I connect the swich to another router that does have internet access, but in general the LAN is not connected to the internet router.
    Thanks!

You can use WRT160N as a switch...Connect the LAN to the Ethernet port of the router and change the ip address of the linksys router in the range of the LAN ip.

  • Apple TV as Airport access point if connected via LAN

    Hi!
I thought about the possibility to use the new Apple TV as Airport/WLAN access point in the case that it is connected via LAN. You don't need an Airport Express and you got Airport/WLAN/HDMI/Audio in all rooms (and around that room) you connect an Apple TV to. Nice and best for hotels!
Vice versa: If you connect it via Airport to use the ethernet port as a hub/switch to connect devices. I think this should be possible and hope that it's only a firmware update...
Next step is not only to playback videos/photos from other devices. Just use it as a main or second screen for all kind of devices (Computer Extensions forMac OS X/Windows other will follow...).
You don't have to connect a notebook to a beamer anymore. There's only the AppleTV connected to a beamer. The video comes via Airport/WLAN /LAN.
Make the USB Plug useful to connect printers or storage devices!!!
That should be great and makes Apple TV the most useful device ton install it in every room in the house!!!
I think, if the Apple TV can be connected to any kind of device, it shouldn't be Apple's hobby anymore.
    Regards,
    Michael

  • Using WRT160N as a wireless access point from TP-WR941N

    Hi,
I have a TP-WR941N router connected to the internet. I recently bought a WRT160n in the hope that I will be able to use it as an access point to extend the wireless range.
Essentially, I have the router and modem in one apartment, but need to be able to access the internet from another. The setup would look something like this:
    |||===Apartment 2======================|||========= Apartment 1 ==================|||
    |||  [Computer] )))))     ((((( [TP-WR941N] )))))    |||     (((((      [WRT160n]     )))))  (((((     [Computer]     |||
    |||  [Modem]----------------------+    |                         |||                                                                                        |||
    |||  [Computer]-----------------------+                        |||                                                                                        |||
    |||==================================|||======================================|||
Is this possible? Do I need to use custom firmware or will the WRT160n work with the supplied firmware? What would I need to set up?

WRT160N router can not communicate with another router on a wireless connection.
You will need to run cable between both the routers.
I think you can try third party firmware.

  • Wireless LAN Controller not broadcasting network to Access points

    Good Day Team,
I am working with a 2100 series WLC controller and 1100 series access point.
I noticed that the wireless lan controller is working. Also the access point is working.
The issue is that there is no internet connection on the access point.
    What could be the error?
    Kindly advice

Try do diagnose your problem following this steps:
    1) Connect to the wireless network
    2) Check your IP address with "ifconfig"
    3) Check if your gateway is set correctly with "route -n"
    4) Try to ping your gateway. Is it working?
    5) Try to ping an internet IP like google: "ping 74.125.234.115"
    6) Try to resolve names with "nslookup www.google.com" for example.
    7) Try to traceroute to an IP or name on internet. Check the result to see the last hop you reached.
    8) If you passed all those tests, try this: "telnet www.google.com 80"
If everything works, but not the test #8, your problem could be related to some proxy configuration.

  • AIR-CAP3501I access point not joining the Cisco 2100 Wireless Lan controller.

    Hello All,
I am installing a new LAP (AIR-CAP3501I ) through the wireless lan controller (AIR-WLC2112-K9) with software version 7.0. I have an external ADSL modem which will act as the DHCP server for the wireless clients and the LAP.
Please find my network setup as below:
The ISP ADSL modem , WLC and LAP are connected to a unmanaged POE switch. The LAP gets its power through the POE switch. When i connect the LAP and the WLC to the switch along with the ADSL modem, the LAPs are getting the ip address from the ADSL modem, however they are not joining the WLC for further process.
    ADSL Modem ip address: 192.168.1.254
Management ip address on the LAP: 192.168.1.1 ( Assigned to port 1, untagged Vlan).
Ap Manager ip address: 192.168.1.1 ( Assigned to the same port i.e port1, Untagged Vlan).
The LAP is getting an IP address from the ADSL modem in the range of the DHCP scope.
I will paste the logs very soon.
Please let me know if i am doing anything wrong oe what will be the issue.
    Thanks in advance,
    Mohammed Ameen

The Acess point joins the Controller for 2-3 seconds and then unjoins again. I am not sure what i am doing wrong here. The access points are getting the IPs from the ADSL modem through the switch, then it talks to the WLC, however it does not join the controller for further process.
    Note:
The Managemnet interface and the AP manager interface are assigned to the same port 1 with unassigned Vlan as mention above.

I have been trying to set up the wireless connection to be able to view streamed movies from netflix through my LGBD390 blu-ray player.  I have successfully connected the wireless router to my Embarq router.  When I check status, it says it is enabled and connection is o.k.  I have been on the phone with Linksys (and was charged $9.99 which did not solve my problem).  I also have chatted and so far that has not worked either.  I have downloaded the upgrade for the firmware.  No matter what I do, the blu-ray cannot find the access point of the router.
    Can you help?
