WRT160N V2: wireless works great, but wired intermittent and slow

Getting very good connection and speed in wireless.  But when I connect the ethernet cable, the speed slows down and half the time I get "cannot connect" error messages.  I bought this router in Oct 2009 and so don't know if it needs a firmware update.  Based on other posts, I went to IE - Tools - Internet Options - Connections - LAN Settings and unclicked the only thing that was clicked: Automatically Detect Settings.  That did not seem to make any difference.  Yesterday, based on some advice on some other site, I switched ports on the router and it worked very well for a while.  But today, no port really performs.
Solved!
Go to Solution.

Try to upgrade/re-flash the firmware on your router.
Connect the computer with the Ethernet cable to the router.
Download the latest firmware from Linksys website and save it on your computer. Open the setup page of the router. Click on Administration tab and go to Firmware upgrade sub tab. Browse the firmware file that you have already downloaded and upgrade it on your router.
After upgrading the firmware on the router, it is recommended that you should reset the router and reconfigure it. Press and hold the reset button on the router for 30 seconds. Release the reset button and wait for 30 seconds. Power cycle the router and reconfigure it.

  • E1200 wireless works great, but needing another wireless router to hardwire connect to AVR

I have an e1200 Linksys router hooked up and working well, a wired connection to my first computer a wireless connection to my second (laptop) in the basemen and to my HDTV. My question is what Linksys device would I need to enable me to get a wireless connection in the basement to then hardwire connections to my Blue-Ray player and my HK AVR-3650. Any advise would be a great help as in I have no clue on what I need, but again I would like to somehow take a wireless signal from one wireless router to another to then have wired connections from both wireless routers. Also, was the e1200 not the right router or can I still make something out of it? Thanks in advance - Ohio

Aside from powerline adapters, you may consider as well WES610N. It is a wireless switch that you can connect to your home/main router to extend your existing network wired and wirelessly. It has 4 ethernet ports on the back for you to connect your wired devices to your network. For more information about this device, refer to these links: Expanding your home network using a WES610N Dual-Band N Entertainment Bridge, Linksys WES610N Frequently Asked Questions.

  • Wireless works great. Wired can't get to work

I have an Extreme (N) that I bought just after the added Gigabit ports to it. I also have an old Express connected using WDS to boost the signal in the back of my house. I started having issues w/ wireless latency in the back room so I ran an ethernet cable from the Extreme to the Express. No matter what I did, I couldn't get the express to work (ie. communicate w/ the extreme) over the wired wire. If I plugged my macbook into the same cable and it works immediately (I get an IP address and internet connectivity). The odd thing is that when I plug in the cable, it shows a link light on the extreme so I know that it's communicating somehow.
I ended up moving the express back to WDS and just moved it closer to the extreme and that has helped the latency.
But now I want to hook up my Samsung Blu-ray player to that wired line and again, I cannot get the Blu-ray player to talk to the extreme. It will not get a DHCP address, will not communicate w/ the internet if I assign a static IP address, and when I try to ping it from my macbook I get 85% packet loss.
I would have thought this was a bad player if I hadn't had the previous experience w/ the express doing the exact same thing.
    Any thoughts?

    Hey DaddyPaycheck
It may not be about the "auto-negotiation" thing.
"auto-negotiation" is controlled by the hardware at boot up to check the NIC state. If a cable is connected at both ends, it detects a line voltage else ignores the NIC. If line voltage is present it starts testing certain pins #'s to see what's at the other end.
Test order ... WAN Port, LAN Port, Cable type Crossover, Cable type Straight, Client to Client, Client to Server, WAN to WAN, LAN to LAN, WAN to LAN, LAN to WAN, Negotiate a speed of the cable connection else BAD CABLE & ignores the NIC completely. Good Grief
This is totally unnecessary if you use the correct cable type & kind. Sorry if I sound like a broken record but too many posters keep blaming the SL upgrade but that's only the end result of new network requirements. Even I was able to use a Cat 5e @ 1Gbit/s with Leopard but SL drop it to 100 Mbit/s. I knew they changed something, found what they did, hacked it to make it work but the packet loss was incredibly. Switched to Cat 6 cable, now all is find and dandy.
For whatever reason each subsequent release of OSX seems to make the Mac "pickier" about the quality of the Ethernet cables it will work with. You can't even imagine how many posters scoff at me when I suggest a new cable.
Dude, I've seen some of your replies in posts around here. I look for them for sheer amusement.
I have had many instances throughout my career where a cable will work fine on one machine and not on another. Since a new cable is often only a few bucks it is a cheap, easy fix when it does work
An client called me with DSL problems the day after I set it up & I still laugh him. He moved the DSL modem so he could see the blinking lights but he rolled up the cable with twist ties. He didn't believe me when I told him about Crosstalk, I had to prove it to him.
No mater what you do some people just don't understand.

  • WRT160N. Wireless works great until I turn on my wired desktop.

    WRT160n v1 firmware 1.02.2
Only have printer and laptop connected wireless.
    Wired connection works good.
Wireless connections works good until I turn on my desktop ( wired)
If wireless does work with desktop on (big if) very slow page loading.

Well try resetting the router for 30 seconds in such a way that power light is blinking on the router & then do a complete network power cycle i.e., unplug the power cable from the modem & from the router & then plug the power cable to the modem first & once all the lights are solid green you could plug the power cable to the router & you will be able to go online wirelessly.

I solved my own problem. Found spotlight in Lion 7 doesn't seem to like third party external drives and gets hung up and unmounts the drives. Had to go into the spotlight preferences and choose all my external drives to not be searched by spotlight.
Temporary fix but would love to see apple address this issue in the next version of Lion.

  • I cannot send an email from my iPad 2? No problem receiving, why does this happen? Have tried the suggestions for setting up email and after doing the sync mail through iTunes receiving worked great but still cannot send? Any help would be great

I cannot send an email from my iPad 2? No problem receiving, why does this happen? Have tried the suggestions for setting up email and after doing the sync mail through iTunes receiving worked great but still cannot send? Any help would be great!

The fact that you can receive means you have a valid e mail address, and have established the connection to the incoming server, so all of that works.  Since the send does not work, that means your outgoing server is rejecting whatever settings you used formthe outgoing set up.  Try them again.
Google your particular isp, and ipad and many times you will find the exact settings needed for your isp.  Or tell us here, and soneone else may be on the same isp.  Some mail services need you to change a port, or have a unique name for the outgoing server.
    Kep trying.

  • My printer works great but I keep getting error messages from HP Solutions Center

I'm using an HP Officejet J6480 All in One Printer on a Windows 7 64 Bit machine.  The printer works great but I kept getting error messages from the HP Solutions Center every 15 seconds that popped up making it impossible to do work on my laptop so I uninstalled the Solutions Center to try to fix the problem.  Now the printer won't print. Is there a way to re-install the Solutions Center and get rid of the pop up error messages?

hello Danagriz, unfortunately the plugin check page lags behind. adobe has released a critical patch for a vulnerability in its flash plugin, which is reportedly already exploited in the wild. therefore firefox will block insecure versions from running by default on websites for your protection.

please update to Adobe Flash Player version 16.0.0.235 as soon as possible, which you can download from http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/distribution3.html (use the windows-exe for plugin-based browsers).
in order to update java, go to java.com (or if you don't need the plugin you can also uninstall it though the windows control panel)

My G5 PowerPC still works great, but what is the latest OS that is possible.  I just bought a new HP Printer and it is not compatible with OS 10.4.  Is there any hope?

A PPC G5 cannot run any version of OS X beyond Leopard 10.5.8.
You should be able to find a Leopard retail (black) install disk on eBay. A grey update disk is machine specific and won't work.

    iOS- Understanding passcodes
A Complete Guide to Recover Your iDevice if You Forget Your Passcode
If you cannot remember the passcode, you will need to restore your device using the computer with which you last synced it. This allows you to reset your passcode and resync the data from the device (or restore from a backup). If you restore on a different computer that was never synced with the device, you will be able to unlock the device for use and remove the passcode, but your data will not be present. Refer to Updating and restoring iPhone, iPad and iPod touch software.
Try restoring the iOS device if backing up and erasing all content and settings doesn't resolve the issue. Using iTunes to restore iOS devices is part of standard isolation troubleshooting. Restoring your device will delete all data and content, including songs, videos, contacts, photos, and calendar information, and will restore all settings to their factory condition.
Before restoring your iOS device, Apple recommends that you either sync with iTunes to transfer any purchases you have made, or back up new data (data acquired after your last sync). If you have movie rentals on the device, see iTunes Store movie rental usage rights in the United States before restoring.
Follow these steps to restore your device:
         1. Verify that you are using the latest version of iTunes before attempting to update.
         2. Connect your device to your computer.
         3. Select your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch when it appears in iTunes under Devices.
         4. Select the Summary tab.
         5. Select the Restore option.
         6. When prompted to back up your settings before restoring, select the Back Up
option (see in the image below). If you have just backed up the device, it is not
             necessary to create another.
         7. Select the Restore option when iTunes prompts you (as long as you've backed up,
you should not have to worry about restoring your iOS device).
         8. When the restore process has completed, the device restarts and displays the Apple
             logo while starting up:
After a restore, the iOS device displays the "Connect to iTunes" screen. For updating
to iOS 5 or later, follow the steps in the iOS Setup Assistant. For earlier versions of
iOS, keep your device connected until the "Connect to iTunes" screen goes away or
              you see "iPhone is activated."
         9. The final step is to restore your device from a previous backup.
If you can not restore your device then you will need to go to recovery mode.
Placing your device into recovery mode:
Follow these steps to place your iOS device into recovery mode. If your iOS device is already in recovery mode, you can proceed immediately to step 6.
         1. Disconnect the USB cable from the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, but leave the other end
of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
         2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the
red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
If you cannot turn off the device using the slider, press and hold the Sleep/Wake
and Home buttons at the same time. When the device turns off, release the Sleep/Wake
              and Home buttons.
         3. While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device.
The device should turn on. Note: If you see the screen pictured below, let the device
charge for at least ten minutes to ensure that the battery has some charge, and then
             start with step 2 again.
         4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen.
When this screen appears you can release the Home button.
         5. If necessary, open iTunes. You should see the following "recovery mode" alert:
         6. Use iTunes to restore the device.
If you don't see the "Connect to iTunes" screen, try these steps again. If you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen but the device does not appear in iTunes, see this article and its related links.
    Additional Information:
Note: When using recovery mode, you can only restore the device. All user content on the device will be erased, but if you had previously synced with iTunes on this computer, you can restore from a previous backup. See this article for more information.
