WRT160N v3 still has DNS issues

Despite locking threads, the WRT160N still has horrible problems with DNS redirects.  The prior thread said there would be a fix 'soon', but it has been ages since that post.  What is the status of the fix?
Its really broken.  You should fix it.

Hi. good day to you all. Can someone help me with my problem here?
I'm using WRT160N v3.0.03 with a Windows XP computer and sadly, these problems keep coming.
Although most of the time it runs just fine, there are times that i get disconnected back to back.
I click repair for it to be fixed, then after a while it happens again...
Can you help me fix my problem permanently? Please and Thank you...
Note: Everytime i ping my ip address in "cmd" and i get the feeling i'm being disconnected, this shows up.

  • 1.4.2 beta still has repaint issues

Sorry guys. I know I have kvetched about this time
and again in these forums. I know that some of you
have found workarounds and solutions to your similar
problems, and I am happy for you.
I had hoped that 1.4.2 would be be better, but I just
tested the beta version and there is no difference.
Here is a description of the problem. It is a complex
applet. Components within components within components.
Initially the applet paints itself fine, but once occluded,
it will not repaint. The only exception is the lowest
level imbedded components, which are components inside
a JEditorPane and do repaint. Everything else in applet will
    not repaint.
The applet has worked fine in Java Runtime environments since
1.1.8, and it still works fine as late as 1.3.1_06. Right now
our customer, understandably, does not want to pay for a
debugging effort for what is apparently a regression in the
Java runtime. They are satisfied to stay with 1.3.1_06, though
this does create client-side hassles and becomes less and less
    viable into the future.
If anyone is experiencing similar problems, has a workaround,
or a simpler test case that reproduces the problem, I would be
grateful to know about it. Thanks.

Ultimately, we had two problems which we needed to fix
in order to qualify our application on 1.4.*.
First, the repaint issue concerned some code that we had
written to workaround issues in the ComponentView used
inside the text pane. We had problems with the initial
display of embedded components because at start-up time:
the event queue had not started up, and the default
component view had deferred some sizing computations via
the "invokeLater" mechanism. We fixed this at the time
by writing our own ComponentView class based on the Java
source of the time. This approach was invalidated by changes
to the graphics pipeline in 1.4.x. The solution was to
write a new local version of ComponentView. We would prefer,
of course, a more standard approach. The deferment of the
component sizing is still an issue, and Sun has accepted this
    defect as a bug/enhancement-request (Bug Id 4851010).
After fixing the repaint issue, we still had problems due to
changes in the focus model on 1.4.x. We had been using a
static JInternalFrame to float a tool palette for pumping
special characters into our text pane. We discovered that
this caused us to lose keyboard focus when the applet restarted.
The solution to that was to make the tool palette non-static.
Now we think we are ready to go with 1.4.x!
Hope this gives you a clue you can use.

  • Aperture 1.1 Update still has IE Issues

    Hi,
Looks like web photo galleries in Aperture 1.1 are still having some pretty severe formatting issues in Internet Explorer for Windows (any version).
    Will this ever get fixed?
We know IE for Mac is dead, love Firefox and Safari but many clients are Windows-based suits.
It appears that just some css tweaks should get this stuff working on most browsers.
    Thanks!

    tindysteve,
have you seen the CSS that the Aperture creates for web galleries (1.0 thru 1.1 uses the same code)?
i'm not an expert by any means, but i looked through the w3.org's CSS v2 spec and there seems to be a lot of strange table/cell conflics going on with the CSS that Aperture creates.
i also did a search online for sites that use the tag <meta name="description" content="Created by Apple Aperture" /> and they all render pretty poorly in IE for Windows. Hopefully Apple will update this very soon.

  • Am I the only one still having this issue

I realize IE put a fix in place in April 2008 for swf flash

  • Hi to All, My wife still has ios 6 on her ipad (she likes the look). I will do the 7.1 upgrade when it is released. Should there be any issues going from 6 directly to 7.1? Thanks!

Hi to All, My wife still has ios 6 on her ipad (she likes the look). I will do the 7.1 upgrade when it is released. Should there be any issues going from 6 directly to 7.1? Thanks!

There shouldn't be. I went from iOS5.whatever to iOS6.1 with no issues.
Just make sure to back everything up before you do it, just in case all doesn't go as planned.
I always do mine the old fashioned way, download the full OS via iTunes so if you've already got it linked to a computer and been using iTunes to do updates/syncing that's how I'd suggest you do it.

Yes, so long as it's within the original purchase year (ie, the purchase from Apple, not from your friend).

  • Internet DHCP/DNS issues with WRT1900ac

I've had a WRT1900ac now for about 2 weeks and the problems seem to be escalating.  Need help.  And yes, I've already read dozens of threads about these issues and nothing seems to be working.
Most of the problems seem to be centered around this DHCP/DNS issue that so many have been reporting.
    First, the symptoms:
Galaxy S4 phones when connected via wifi have some apps that don't update (facebook and google play)
Some computers (both Win 7) will connect to the network just fine, both wired and wireless - but won't be able to get to the internet
I've spent the last 2-3 days of my life reading forums and trying all sorts of things to get this to work properly (like my old router) and I'm still stuck.  Some things I've tried:
Firmware is up-to-date (latest version: 1.1.8.164461)
Manually assigned static DNS in router config settings (connectivity -> local network) to various combinations including the router address, 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4, 75.75.75.75, 75.75.76.76 (I have comcast), OpenDNS addresses, etc.  I read that the router address is not needed, so I stopped including it.
I manually assigned IPs and DNS on the Galaxy S4 phones and that seemed to work... but also seems unnecessary.
I've reserved DHCP addresses on the computers in question, that didn't seem to work, I also manually set DNS on one of the comupters (can't on the other... long story/not my computer) and that worked for a while and then stopped working.
The only way to get one of the computers on the internet now is to turn on the guest network (even though the computer is hard wired to the router), connect, and then the wired network works.  No clue why this is, but my guess is that it needs the guest network for DNS, then it fails back over to the wired network.  Once that happens, I can actually turn off the wifi on the computer and everything works great... until I reboot.  Key point: I can't change any settings on that box other than entering in SSID/passphrase info for the wireless connection.  I can connect to the regular (non-Guest) wifi just fine - I just can't ever get to the internet.
I've tried massaging DHCP settings on the router until I'm blue in the face - Static DNS, reserving DHCP addresses, hell I even put one of the computers in the DMZ to see if that would work and it still can't connect to the internet (it's worth noting that with my old router, Linksys WRT310N, the setup was literally plug-and-play - no hassle with any of this).
I've tried countless router reboots, factory resets, turning off my modem and router for 2+ minutes, and nothing is working.
I even read somewhere that if you modify your DHCP settings at all that the WRT1900ac stops doing DNS properly and breaks, so I even tried several "hard" factory resets and used all the default DHCP/DNS settings.  And it worked... for a few hours.
Seriously, I'm at my wit's end.  I'm out a lot of money on this thing and it's been one headache after another.  Please help.

I think for most people its a bad idea to hold out that hope, lol. It seems like a great piece of hardware but if you really need a router and don't want to have to 'play' with it, its probably not a good choice. I have an EA6900 that I am very happy with but it has the same restrictions as far as DNS and I really hate the idea that I am forced to use the smartwifi portal. I would really like for them to give me a choice of the old gui or the new one and let ME decide. Lots of routers to choose from out there now and new ones seem to be coming out all the time so do some reading and see if something suits you better. Good luck!

  • DNS issues from one domain controller to another (but not the other way) nslookup DNS request timed out

    Hi All
I've been trying to trudge my way through an issue our client is having but I'm getting nowhere fast. This issue was discovered when searching for why users at our second site were experiencing slow logons every morning (5-10minutes to login).
Within our domain there are two domain controllers for the child domain we manage.
DC1 has connection back to the parent DC's (managed by our clients parent company), and also replicates both ways with DC2. DC2 is at another site, on another subnet and replicates to and from DC1 only.
DC2 appears to have no issues, it can resolve any address, nslookup either using itself or DC1 is fine and name servers resolve fine.
DC1 has massive issues with DC2 - using it for nslookup gives me the following:
I get this timeout error for internal and external names, but both DC's are able to ping and access internet with no issues.
When trying to resolve name servers from DC1, DC2 sits at 'validating' for a while and then comes back with 'a timeout occurred during validation'.
Restarting DNS Server, NETLOGON and registering in DNS from DC2 had DC1 talking to it fine for a few minutes, but then it went back how it is (and I haven't been able to replicate this fix since).
Reverse DNS zones are setup for all the subnets used, there are A records and PTR's for both DC's.
Performing 'ping -a dc2.ip.address' from DC1 comes back fine - it knows what it is in both directions (name and IP) but nslookup and nameserver resolution is still failing.
I just don't know where to go from here - from everything I've read they should be happy... Any ideas?

    Hi,
When NSLOOKUP starts, before anything else, it checks the computer's network configuration to determine the IP address of the DNS server that the computer uses.
Then it does a reverse DNS lookup on that IP address to determine the name of the DNS server.
If reverse DNS for that IP address is not setup correctly, then NSLOOKUP cannot determine the name associated with the IP address.

  • Internet connections have trouble "grabbing on": is this a DNS issue?

Setup: late 2009 iMac, Mountain Lion 10.8.3, using Wifi through an Airport Extreme. A Windows laptop, two iPhones, and an iPad all use the Wifi with no problems at all.
On the iMac: I suspect it's a DNS issue, although I don't know how to confirm that for all the issues. Often, in Safari, the blue bar will progress a bit and get nowhere - maybe a few minutes later the site will appear. Repeatedly hitting refresh seems to be a faster way of reaching the site. Chrome often tells me "DNS lookup failed": once again, refreshing several times will usually get me to the site.
The issue comes and goes, and has been doing so for the past few weeks I think. It's not as if I've lost the internet connection - I always get the connection, but sometimes it takes a while. It doesn't seem to be time-based: one minute fine, next minute a problem, next minute fine.
I live in Taiwan: this issue MAY be less serious with Taiwanese websites (just now I opened a .tw site instantly, while bbc.co.uk is hanging), but it seems to happen with everything.
But the problems aren't just in browsers: in iTunes, when refreshing podcasts, the behavior is similar: the little rotating arrows can keep going forever, as if no connection is being made at that particular moment. Ditto when downloading a podcast: it sits at nothing downloaded, often until I hit pause and resume a few times, at which point it downloads with good speed. Similar when refreshing NetNewsWire, and Twitter, and Mail. Do DNS issues also happen with iTunes and RSS? (Sorry if that's a dumb question - I'm way out of my depth here, and hadn't even heard of DNS until a couple of days ago.)
Results from Speedtest.net are consistently good (download in the range of 40 Mbps, upload in the range of 10 Mbps, ping 7ms) - once I can actually get to the website, which as with all other websites, can sometimes involve repeated hangs and hits of refresh/reload. Note that there has never been a hang when actually trying to test with Speedtest (just when getting to the site): that points to DNS issues as well, right?
The Wifi bar indicator at the top of the screen is always at full strength.
I've tried things mentioned in different threads here, and also at this page...
    http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/26616/dns-not-resolving-on-mac-os
... but so far nothing seems to help.
Can anyone advise on what the problem actually is, and how I can go about fixing it? Thanks in advance!

Hmm. Maybe this has been resolved now - thanks!
First step: I checked the Network / Wifi Advanced / DNS, and found two DNS servers listed: I just reversed the order of the two, and after clicking "Apply", nothing changed. Still the same issue.
Second step: looked on the iPad, Settings / Wi-Fi, and found the DNS listed there: and then I added that same number (10.0.1.1 - the iPhone has the same DNS) to the DNS server list on my iMac, at the top of the list. For the moment, everything is working very well, including far faster iTunes Podcast Refresh than I've seen in ages.
I'll check back in later to confirm the problem has indeed gone away, and I'm not just having a good ten minutes.
Where would those DNS Servers have come from? Does my ISP somehow automatically install them, or did I type them in back in the mists of time?

  • DNS issue pinging an IP gives reponse from a different IP?

    Hi,
I have a strange DNS issue:
    Quick bit of site info:
2003 Domain, active directory integrated DNS, we run static IP and the computer name contains the IP for example
IP 192.168.100.18 has a computer name of 'Computer18'
    Now the problem
If I ping 192.168.100.034 I get a response but it actually pings IP 192.168.100.28
    BUT
    if I ping 192.168.100.34 I get a response from 192.168.100.34
    if I ping -a 192.168.100.034 I get Computer28.domain.local
If I ping -a 192.168.100.34 I get no name and it just ping's .34 (which is correct as this .34 IP is not a PC!)
    Also
    if i ping 192.168.100.028 i get 192.168.100.28
    the same as if i ping'd 192.168.100.28
So i assume there is an incorrect DNS entry which for some reason is resolving '192.168.100.034' (Maybe treating it like a name rather than an IP) to 192.168.100.28 however I have been through the DNS console several times and can find no such entry!?
I've flushed the DNScache on my PC and on the Domain controller and it is still doing it.
Anyone have any idea what's going on?
Or how I can track down the problem?
Many thanks in advance for any help or advice.
    Ian

I have found the answer and this is expected behaviour!
    see this article:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/115388/en-us
by adding a preceding 0 zero the last octet is then treated as octal not decimal! and so 034 in octal is 28 in decimal
it also happens with many others for example 022 in octal is 18 in decimal
    Thanks anyway
    Ian

  • Frequent but random DNS issues

I have been experiencing frequent but random DNS issues that have been affecting my access to websites and above all email. The problem is that it comes and goes without any intervention on my part but when it becomes really bad I have found that changing the DNS server in the network settings tends to fix things immediately for a while until it starts up again a day or two later. Obviously this shouldn't be necessary and it's been happening now for several weeks.
At first I had problems with BT DNS and after hitting my head against a brick wall for a week or so was amazed that the problem cleared up as soon as I put in the Google DNS. Then yesterday I was having major hassles and I remembered the DNS trick so I tried Open DNS with no improvement but tried BT again and everything was immediately OK. Most of the time I've just been struggling along and waiting for things to improve.
In an effort to try and troubleshoot the email issues I contacted my webhost and ran a trace route which show *** hops immediately after listing the BT HomeHub rather than a clear path of progression that my webhost says may be related to an ICMP protocol block in the router but I'm still seeing this even if I temporarily disable the firewall on my homehub and computer.
I have spoken with various BT support staff and they clearly just don't understand the issues. I am sick of resetting the router and calling BT just to go through the same steps. On one call the support guy felt it was likely to be an issue with my router so I asked about them sending me a replacement and they won't do it.
After two years of headaches with non functioning YouView I've just about had it with BT. Does anybody have any suggestions how to fix these problems?

  • DNS Issues - MacbookAir running Snow Leopard

It seems like it has been since the update to snow leopard when my dns issues started, but I'm not quite sure that is the problem.
I have a MBA, so all of my networking is done over my Wireless(AirPort)
I can connect to ANY Wireless Networks fine, grab a DHCP address just fine, and also grab 2/3 DNS servers from the DHCP server just fine.
My issue is that at random intervals my MBA will stop resolving addresses. It can continue to ping out to a DNS server via it's IP address, but will have a connection timeout on resolving the address for roughly 45 seconds. When the 45 seconds is up, it will begin to resolve addresses again. I have poked around google and found that it could be due to DNS sever priorities in Snow Leopard using the bottom DNS first instead of the top. I ruled out that issue by adding on one static DNS server (4.2.2.1)in my network configurations manually.
This happens on every network I am connected to that has a gateway to the internet. I have not tried to resolve local names on a local network, but I have tried resolving 'normal' addresses.
For now, I'm writing this post via remote desktop (windows machine) from my MBA with a static IP inserted as the address because if I stick a address that needs resolved first, every 3-10 minutes it will freeze and won't resolve the name, lose the connection until it can resolve the names again.
I have posted what I thought might help someone else diagnose the issue, because I am stump. Please take a look at my testing outputs here:
    http://www.oregonstate.edu/~hillchri/dns
Check out the nettestout.txt is where I did the following bash script:

Did you read the note at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4030 ?
As of Snow Leopard, Apple does not directly use BIND but the utilities linked with BIND (such as dig and nslookup) still do:
    Mac OS X NOTICE
The nslookup command does not use the host name and address resolution or the DNS query routing
mechanisms used by other processes running on Mac OS X. The results of name or address queries
printed by nslookup may differ from those found by other processes that use the Mac OS X native name
and address resolution mechanisms. The results of DNS queries may also differ from queries that use
the Mac OS X DNS routing library.
    http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/DOCUMENTATION/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/m an1/nslookup.1.html
Instead, DNS lookup in commands such as ping and for applications such as Safari is handled by mDNSResponder, and the Apple Tech Note listed above describes how it works:
In Mac OS X v10.6 and later, the search order of DNS servers specificed in Network preferences is dynamic, so that servers that don't respond are moved to the end of the search order.
    and:
In Mac OS X v10.6, the default DNS server searching behavior is that when a server does not return a result or when it returns SERV_FAIL for a query, and other servers are available to query, the server is temporarily disabled in the search order.

  • My iphone 4s and ipad 2 both with 7.0.4 update will no longer connect to wifi but non-mac lap top has no issues

my iphone 4s and ipad2 both with 7.0.4 update will no longer connect to wifi.
About three days ago the ability to connect came and went and the connection never lasted more than 10-15 minutes; it has not been able to connect since last night. I do not think it's my wifi router as non-mac lap top has no issues. I have seem many similar questions posted.

Reboot your router by removing all power from it for about 15 seconds. Also, if your router still has its default SSID (such as LINKSYS, DLINK, NETGEAR, etc) change the SSID to something unique. Note that all other devices on your network will have to be reconnected if you change the name, but if the name is still the default that is most likely your problem.
If the SSID is not the default then the reboot should fix it.

  • DNS Issues with Time Capsule - DNS Proxy periodically dies

hi all .... looking for some suggestions
I have a time capsule 1TB, connected to a linksys adsl modem in bridge mode, with the TC acting as DHCP server for my local clients. In the PPPoE settings I also enter the primary and secondary addresses for DNS that my ISP supplied.
I am able to successfully connect to the internet, and all clients successfully pick up an IP address, and each client picks up the TC as the DNS proxy. Everything works perfectly as it should.
Usually once per day, there seems to be a slight hickup with the internet connection (hard to tell whether I am losing the PPPoE or some other issue). When this happens, the PPPoE connection remains active, as I am able to access anything on the internet from an IP level. However, the DNS proxy service on the TC seems to die and as a result, all internet browsing fails. If I reboot the TC, everything comes back to normal. If I dont reboot, the only way to get browsing working is to manually enter the DNS IP address from ISP into the client PCs. However, this is a manual fix that I should not have to perform.
Looking for advice and guidance. Seems like a bug but I cant tell. If I was able to set the DHCP server to pass out the ISP supplied addresses that would also work, but I cant.

Just got off the phone with support for this very same problem. DNS Proxy is definitely dying in the TC, looks like a firmware issue to me.
This is the 3rd TC I'm on. First was a 500GB, had this problem, replaced it under warranty at Apple's direction, replacement did the same, just upgraded this weekend to 1GB, and same issue still. All on 7.3.2 firmware.
TC 1TB, PPPoE to my ISP, ISP's DNS Servers listed in the PPPoE config in the TC.
When a host gets DHCP from the TC the only DNS returned is the TC itself, since it proxies the ISP DNS servers.
Once every day or two, the DNS proxy dies. local network works, and I can add my ISP's DNS addresses in my host config and I have DNS again, but this is definitely something dying in the DNS proxy in the TC.
Just for kicks trying to switch from my ISP's DNS servers to OpenDNS now since someone said that worked for them, but I am not hopeful... I don't see this as a host DNS issues at all.
The dead proxy is very clear:
    $ nslookup apple.com. 192.168.1.1 # that's the TC
    Server: 192.168.1.1
    Address: 192.168.1.1#53
    ** server can't find apple.com: SERVFAIL
    $ nslookup apple.com. 208.67.222.222 # that's OpenDNS
    Server: 208.67.222.222
    Address: 208.67.222.222#53
    Non-authoritative answer:
    Name: apple.com
    Address: 17.149.160.49
I replaced a linksys router with the TC and am kind of unhappy that a $500 router dies every couple of days. My cheapo Linksys router never needed to be restarted, it only ever got rebooted once every year or so when the house lost power long enough for the UPS to run out of battery.
Help us out here Apple, I replaced a $50 router with a $500 because I like the flavor of your kool aid, and this thing dies every day or two. Even if you can't fix why the proxy is dying every couple of days, can you please at least update the firmware to maybe restart the proxy if it quits working?

  • TS4268 One of my contacts had an IPhone and we iMessage successful but now he switched to an android and now he can't receive my messages. He still has an iPod that receives them. How can I get my text changed to regular text instead iMessage? Thanks

One of my contacts had an iPhone and we iMessage fine. Now he switched to a samsung galaxy note III and I need to switch his contact from iMessage so he can receive my text. He still has an iPod so iMessage still works for that but will that be effected by changing for android? How do I make the change? Thanks

It isn't your issue, it is his. He needs to make sure he has turned of iMessage and removed his number from the iMessage database. If he does not still have the device, he needs to contact Apple Care to take care of it.
