WRT160N Wired connections have trouble staying connected

I bought the Linksys WRT160N router a few days ago to replace my older D-Link router. It installed easily, and for a few hours everything was fine. Ever since those few hours though, on my 3 wired connections, they all lose internet way to constantly. However one of them usually works fine, the Xbox 360. But my 2 computers that are connected every 2 or 3 pages the internet tries to load, it loses connection. To get to this page from Firefox's start page, and register inbetween, which is about 6 or 7 pages, I had to reset my connection twice. Sometimes however all I have to do is refresh the page and it'll load, but having to do that a lot can get annoying. All of my wireless connections generally always work fine, no connection problems at all.
I've tried resetting the router and resetting the modem.
Any ideas as to what's wrong?
Oh and for some reason I can't get into the router's settings on my computer. Whenever the login popup appears and I type in the username and password it just keeps coming back up. I've tried it about 10 times and I've even checked the text file the router made when I first installed it to make sure I was putting in the right information.
Any ideas what's wrong here?
Thanks!

To make your wired connection stable you need to reduce the MTU Size on your router set-up...
If you are unable to access your router set-up page to make the changes you have to enter the correct password, by default the password is admin(no username)...As you have resetted your router to factory defaults you should leave the username blank & in password use admin in lower case...It should open your router set-up...If it does not, hard reset your router again...
Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...
Open an Internet Explorer browser page.In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1
Leave username blank & in password use admin in lower case...
On the set-up tab change the MTU Size to 1365 and click Save Settings...Also you need to re-configure your router for Internet Access...

  • HT5569 on my wifi page  linksys what does the  Renew Lease  mean?   I'm having trouble staying connected to my home wifi, does this have anything to do with that?

I'm having trouble staying connected to my home Wifi, it keeps going to 3G (I have never had this problem until today) When it is connected while I'm close to the router I click on the circled i after the linksys  & it goes to the IP adress stuff, down a little waysafter the DNS & sarch domains it says Renew Lease - should I click on that?

DHCP is the system that dynamically assigns ip addresses from a pool of addresses.
You get a lease for the ip addresses. After the lease is up, the ip addresses is released and put back in the pool.
You get assigned another ip address.
Renewing the lease releases the IP address and assigns you a new one.
It will not cause any harm.

    Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
Change the channel on your wireless router. Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

  • I'm having trouble staying connected to the internet

I'm having trouble "staying" connected to the internet.

    hmmmmmmm..........
How are you connected to "the internet?"  There are many ways & you provided none.
If wireless, are you using one of Apple's routers, or a 3rd part one?  If the latter post in their forums or contact their tech support department.
    Last but not least:
Please detail all you have done to resolve your issue.  Need this information so that the users can avoid the "been there, done that" scenario type responses.  This is to avoid repeating the troubleshooting you may have already tried.  Thank you.

  • Having trouble staying connected to IEEE 802.1X with my iPhone 4s

I got my iPhone 4S pre-ordered with Verizon and I am having trouble staying connected to my college's 802.1x WiFi connection. My college has a help website with a walkthrough to connect to the network and it works and I can get WiFi on my phone but when I lock my phone for about 1 minute my phone forgets the connection and I have to go through the steps all over again to get connected.
Here are the steps my school site has me follow:
Connecting to the RPI Wireless Network Using 802.1x Authentication on the iPhone / iPod Touch
Make sure that your device has been updated to the latest software version available.
Go into Settings and select Wi-Fi.
Make sure the Wi-Fi switch is set to ON.
Under Choose a Network, select Other....
Enter rpi_802.1x for the Network Name, and press the Security option.
Select WPA2 Enterprise as the security, then press the Other Network button in the top-left corner to return to the previous screen.
Enter your RCS userID and password in the appropriate fields and press the blue Join button in the bottom-right.
Let the network access load, then press the Accept button to accept the certificate provided.
This is really annoying so any help would be appreciated.

We use 802.1x Authentication here at UCSD and it seems fine.
The only problem i see is it will disconnect when you lock the phone but it automatically reconnects when you unlock the phone.
Our setup is a lot simpler, you just select the network and enter in your AD account information.
It could be your college has not setup their wifi correctly. You should connect your network team.

  • Why am I having so much trouble staying connected to my wireless broadband?

Hi.  We have our broadband connected to a router.  My husband, who has an HP laptop, never has any connectivity issues.  I have a macbook, not sure what generation it is.  I am constantly lossing connection to the router.  Sometimes the network is still listed in the bar on top, but I cannot connect to it.  If I click on it, it asks for my Admin. password to "change" networks but will not connect.   I can't even use my airport utlility to mess with it since the scan shows no wireless devices!  Usually if I reboot the computer, it will start up connected again, but may not stay that way.  It ***** when trying to download my fav. TV show for later playback.  And of course anything else connected to the internet.
I hope someone can help me.
Oh yes, I bought this laptop used.  Have never had any other problems with it now for 3+ years.
    Thanks!

I just found out that the MacBook I have is a 13 inch 2008 model, if that helps.  I have also applied the Broadband Optimizer utility I downloaded from Apple's site and that seems to have helped some, but the problem is still happening.
    Thanks again.

  • Wired Computer won't stay connected. Please help!

    Hello all,
I've got the WRT160N running through a Motorola DSL modem and into a wired desktop computer.  I just have one laptop and a PS3 that utilize the wireless connection.  I very rarely have any issues with the wireless connections.  However, if I'm not connected to the internet via the wireless laptop/PS3, then my wired computer will not connect to the internet at all.  Whenever I connect to the internet via the laptop, the desktop's internet connection resumes.  Does anyone have any suggestions?
I've tried re-installing, tooling with the advanced settings, etc but nothing seems to work.  Thanks in advance for your help and let me know if you need anymore info.

Open the setup page of the router, reduce the MTU value to 1300 and click on save settings...Power cycle the router and try..

  • My iphone4s is having trouble staying connected to my car's bluetooth

my phone is connected to my 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe but it loses the connection often. Is this a known issue? Hyundai says it is not them but a problem with apple.  What can you tell me?

Delete the pairing from both systems, reboot the phone and shut off the car for 5 minutes to re-boot the in car system. Then re-pair them. My wife and I have had no issues with our 2010 and 2011 Kia's, which use the same head units. If you have the nav system, the process to re-boot may be different. Check the owners manual.

  • Internet connections have trouble "grabbing on": is this a DNS issue?

Setup: late 2009 iMac, Mountain Lion 10.8.3, using Wifi through an Airport Extreme. A Windows laptop, two iPhones, and an iPad all use the Wifi with no problems at all.
On the iMac: I suspect it's a DNS issue, although I don't know how to confirm that for all the issues. Often, in Safari, the blue bar will progress a bit and get nowhere - maybe a few minutes later the site will appear. Repeatedly hitting refresh seems to be a faster way of reaching the site. Chrome often tells me "DNS lookup failed": once again, refreshing several times will usually get me to the site.
The issue comes and goes, and has been doing so for the past few weeks I think. It's not as if I've lost the internet connection - I always get the connection, but sometimes it takes a while. It doesn't seem to be time-based: one minute fine, next minute a problem, next minute fine.
I live in Taiwan: this issue MAY be less serious with Taiwanese websites (just now I opened a .tw site instantly, while bbc.co.uk is hanging), but it seems to happen with everything.
But the problems aren't just in browsers: in iTunes, when refreshing podcasts, the behavior is similar: the little rotating arrows can keep going forever, as if no connection is being made at that particular moment. Ditto when downloading a podcast: it sits at nothing downloaded, often until I hit pause and resume a few times, at which point it downloads with good speed. Similar when refreshing NetNewsWire, and Twitter, and Mail. Do DNS issues also happen with iTunes and RSS? (Sorry if that's a dumb question - I'm way out of my depth here, and hadn't even heard of DNS until a couple of days ago.)
Results from Speedtest.net are consistently good (download in the range of 40 Mbps, upload in the range of 10 Mbps, ping 7ms) - once I can actually get to the website, which as with all other websites, can sometimes involve repeated hangs and hits of refresh/reload. Note that there has never been a hang when actually trying to test with Speedtest (just when getting to the site): that points to DNS issues as well, right?
The Wifi bar indicator at the top of the screen is always at full strength.
I've tried things mentioned in different threads here, and also at this page...
    http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/26616/dns-not-resolving-on-mac-os
... but so far nothing seems to help.
Can anyone advise on what the problem actually is, and how I can go about fixing it? Thanks in advance!

Hmm. Maybe this has been resolved now - thanks!
First step: I checked the Network / Wifi Advanced / DNS, and found two DNS servers listed: I just reversed the order of the two, and after clicking "Apply", nothing changed. Still the same issue.
Second step: looked on the iPad, Settings / Wi-Fi, and found the DNS listed there: and then I added that same number (10.0.1.1 - the iPhone has the same DNS) to the DNS server list on my iMac, at the top of the list. For the moment, everything is working very well, including far faster iTunes Podcast Refresh than I've seen in ages.
I'll check back in later to confirm the problem has indeed gone away, and I'm not just having a good ten minutes.
Where would those DNS Servers have come from? Does my ISP somehow automatically install them, or did I type them in back in the mists of time?

  • Why does my 4S have problems staying connected to wifi?

The wifi on my 4s rarely works, which is a problem when I'm over my data limit. It's so irritating because I'm in a place with perfect wifi coverage and my laptop and my girlfriend's phone have wifi but my phone doesn't. And I've tried resetting the network settings MANY times already.

Over the holiday I got an iPad Mini and iPhone 5. On both devices my wifi disconnects often, especially when put into lock mode. I had to keep re entering password to reconnect, very annoying.
I read the discussions and had a thought to solve it. This fix works on both my iPhone and iPad.
Go to your wireless settings and disconnect. Then select any other network, one that you do not want to connect to.
Connect to the random wifi network and when prompted enter a password. Just make up any combination Of letters and numbers until the join button pops out in blue. Click join.
Obviously it will fail and tell you the password is incorrect. Back out and now connect to your wifi network.
That's it, problem solved. Both my iPad and iPhone now automatically reconnect to my network when I unlock device.

  • Just got a new router, now iPad having trouble staying connected to wireless

It seems the wireless connection is sjakey on iPad. At home I never had any problems until recently after getting a new wireless router for the house. iPad sees the wireless network, connects, but often disconnects. Signal strength is fine, but it won;t hold. Any suggestions?
At my friends house, it sees his network and connects, but only works with email. Safari doesn't work or any app that requires wireless connection.

Shawn is speculating. None of us know if 2.0.3 will be released in September or indeed ever.
Can I ask what type of encryption you are using? WEP, WPA or WPA? 40bit WEP needs a five ASCII character (or ten hex) password to work properly with all devices and 128bit WEP needs a thirteen ASCII character (or twenty six hex) password. It is much more preferable to use WPA though as you can use a password of any length and WPA can't be hacked nearly so quickly as WEP.
    Hope that helps.

  • Have problems staying connected since I downloaded latest version... also don't like the history drop down menu now. I use yahoo because its what came with my DSL from Verizon. Can I go back to the other version of Firefox or can this be fixed?

I can run about an hour and then it hangs up. Doesn't seem to depend on what website or program I am running. I walk away to change the laundry and come back and its hung. In the middle of a game on facebook, it hangs. Didn't have this problem with the version I used before. I have always liked Firefox and have used for a number of years. Don't want to change if it can be fixed.
