WRT160N with WRT160N

Hi:
Is it possible to connect two WRT160N routers wirelessly with each other?
I would like to expand the range and performance of my network including internet.
I currently have WRT54G and WAP54G. Based on the multiple user reviews of the WAP4400N I am against buying it.
Can you please explain what is Cascading and Bridging. If you have other suggestions please advise. If not, I'll have to wait unitl Linksys releases a reliable WAP-N (wish I knew how long that would take)..
Thanks,
Mitka

Its not possible to connect 2 WRT160N routers wirelessly with each other. You could the WAP300N with the WRT160N router which will work fine provided you setup the wireless wide channel to 20 - MHZ channel & Standard channel being 11.Also, you do the wireless & advanced wireless settings on router...
Difference between Cascading & Bridging..
Cascading is using 2 routers either wired or wireless one after another...ie., NAT behind NAT.
Bridging is wat you use 2 topologies ie., you use WRT54G & WET54G to convert the wireless signal into wired use the switch in between & send it to no of computers.

  • Make Eyebeam 1.5 work threw WRT160N with firmware 1.02.2

    Greetings:
I have an eyebeam 1.5 that I have tried and tried to get to work with my WRT160N with firmware 1.02.2 with zero sucess.  The Eyebeam will work perfectly when hardwired to the cable modem but will not work via the WRT160N wireless router.  Please help and tell me what to do do get this to work.  The eyebeam does not use an ip address to connect to the service but rather a domain name netcenter.republicsolutions.net. In the settings IP address is set to discover global address STUN is turned on and is set to discover server and ICE is enabled as well and xtunnels is set to never.  In the presence tab it is set to "peer to peer".  In the security tab  signaling transport is set to "automatic"
Also the Eyebeam works perfectly on the wirelss router at work so this is indeed a Linksys issue.
    Thanks

Well try to upgrade the firmware of the router which can be downloaded from the Linksys/Cisco website. Once the firmware is downloaded, you can proceed with the firmware upgrade even without Internet connection.
    • To prevent upgrade failures make sure that your computer is connected to the router using an Ethernet cable for stable connectivity. Upgrading the firmware wirelessly may cause permanent damage to the router since wireless connection may be unstable during the process.
    • Use a different Internet browser if Internet Explorer doesn’t work or use a different computer to perform the upgrade.
    • To prevent failure disable firewall to ensure that the upgrade will not be disrupted.
    • Make sure that you downloaded the correct firmware and version for your device to prevent technical problems that may damage the router.
Here is the link for Upgrading the Linksys router's firmware: http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?vw=1&docid=e9c2361ee7974d75913e61386a712188_4030.xml&pid=80&r...
After upgrading it is recommended to reset the router, then reconfigure it again and then check the status.

  • Desktops get "Server Not Found" errors with WRT160N

I'm sharing my WRT160N with 2 laptops and 3 desktops. My laptops connect to the internet ok... drops now and then tho... but my desktops frequently get a "Server Not Found" error. After repeated "try again" clicks, it eventually connects again. Any ideas??

    Try this ;
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...Leave Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
Under the Setup Tab...reduce the MTU value to 1300 and save settings.
Also reduce the card speed of the dekstop... (assuming it is window XP)..Click on the Start button >>> Control Panel >> Network Connections >> Right click on the ""Local Area Connection"" icon and select properties-Here click on the "Configure" button- Click on the "Advanced" tab- In the "Property" box highlight Link speed and duplex/Connection type/Network or Media type- And in the "Value" box select 10 Mbps half duplex/ 10 base T/10 base half mode and click on OK..  Now restart the computer.

  • Problem with WRT160N v3

    Hi all.
I've hit a problem here and I was hoping somebody could point me in the right direction.
    Here's the sitation.
I have a Wrt160N v3 router and I have 2 wired connections out of it.. one to my main computer and one upstairs where my ps3 used to be.  The wired connections work fine.
I also have a laptop and an ipod in the house that use the wireless on my network.  They DID work fine, but now they won't connnect to the network.  They both see the SSID of the network but when I try to connect with either I get "Unable to join the network "SSID"".
A couple days ago I updated the firmware of the router and everything worked again... then after a day or so it wouldn't join the network again.
The fact that it DID work again and then stopped again, to me, says that my laptop and ipod are fine, but something is wrong with my wireless network.
I have NO idea of how to fix this or what is even wrong, so I was hoping that somebody here that knows a heck of a lot more than I do about this stuff(not hard) could give me a few tips and tricks and hopefully get me back on the network with my laptop.
    thanks in advance.

As you already upgraded the firmware .
As it is recommended by Linksys that you have to reset the router after upgrading the firmware .
Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds .
Power cycle the modem and router .
    Open the setup page of your router  using the IP :  192.168.1.1 ( User name= blank , Password= ' admin ' ) .
Configure the settings manually on your router .
Create new wireless network name and secure it .
Try to connect the wireless devices to the new network ,
See if that helps you .

  • Problem connecting Macbook Pro with WRT160n wireless

My roommate and I recently got WRT160n, and she has a PC and her connection was fine. But for my Macbook, whenever I try to connect to the network and put in my password (the one that I set up) it says that the password is incorrect. I'm not sure what the problem is. I tried configuring with the 192.168.1.1 thing, but that didn't help me much either (unless I was doing it wrong.) Help?

Make sure that the wireless password is correct ....also disable all firewall on the MAC computer .... & check that you are able to connect the network or not ....
If so then try to ping the DG ....

  • Many issues with WRT160N v3 (Windows 7 related?)

    Ok so here's the story.
    Several months ago I purchased a WRT160N v2. I was connecting four devices. 1 XP machine, 1 Vista machine, 1 PS3, and 1 Xbox 360.
The XP machine is using Wireless-N PCI Adapter model no. WMP300N. The Vista machine is using a Wireless-N USB Network Adapter with Dual-Band, model no. WUSB600N
The process was fairly straight forward and I was successful in getting everything set up correctly. It worked great for the most part barring any unexpected wireless crashes.
A few weeks ago I accidentally bricked the router when trying to upgrade the firmware. It was my mistake and I should have been thinking but it happened. I was able to get a replacement from Linksys and I received the WRT160N v3
Sadly this router hasn't provided me with the same easy of installation.
Right now the situation is a little different than before. I am running a Windows 7 machine right now. It's up to date and working great. I haven't noticed any issues with the OS other than some random driver issues here and there.
I first attempted to just plug the router into my modem to see if my Windows 7 machine would automatically see it and connect. To my surprise it actually did. It connected and I was able to get online.
But here's the problem, my speed when connected was horrible. It would range anywhere from 75-1Mbps. For comparison, when on Windows XP I would get a locked 130Mbps. In addition to that, the LAN connection will not work. At all. It see's the connect, it shows it's connected and online. Then when I attempt to get online it fails and knocks me back to local access only.
I then attempted to set up the connection using the included disc for v3. This was problematic due to compatibility issues I assume. It didn't fair any better.
The final thing I did was plug my computer directly to the router without connection to the internet and disconnected from the Wireless and attempted to upgrade the firmware. THIS PROCESS WAS SUCCESSFUL. It did not fail and brick the router. I did it correctly this time. To repeat, this did not brick the router.
Ok, so I guessed it was due to Windows 7? I called Linksys up and they said they were unable to support the unreleased beta OS. I'm fine with that.
Next I decided to see if I could get my Vista machine online. With this I decided to run through the setup process that comes with router. I followed the steps to the T. Doing exactly what they told me to do. When it finished it showed it did have connection to the Internet. When the Linksys Easy Link Advisor started up and attempted to get me on wireless, it failed. It shows it lost connection and was unable to regain connection. Attempting to statically assign myself an IP address fails as well.
Using the LANA port with this router on the Vista machine works perfectly.
Right now I'm falling back to a very very old router. It's a Linksys Network Everywhere NR041 wired router. This router works rock solid with my Vista, Windows 7, PS3, and 360 all plugged in and only has some minor overheating issues (common with this model).
    My questions:
Does the WRT160N v3 have issues with  Windows 7?
Why exactly am I have so many issues with it at all?
Are there issues with my wireless card and Windows 7?
Would the compatibility issues cause the LAN connections to fail between the router and my Windows 7 machine?
Is there a better router solution for me?
I would prefer to not have to revert back to Windows XP as I am enjoying Windows 7.
I would appreciate any help I can get as I'm fairly unhappy with these two products so far.
    Thank you.

There is a compatibilty issue with the Wireless Adapter and Windows 7 as it seems there are no specific Windows 7 Drivers to install the adapter...So basically that could be the reason why Windows 7 keeps loosing the Wireless Connection...
Also remember to reset the router to factory defaults after any firmware upgrade, then setup the router again from scratch.  If you have not done this since your last firmware upgrade, please do this now and see if it corrects your problem.  If you saved a router configuration file, DO NOT use it.
To reset the router press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...
Don't use the CD to re-configure the router, instead do a manual setup...
If your Internet Service Providor is Cable follow this link
If your Internet Service Providor is DSL follow this link
Also adjust the Wireless Settings on your Router -
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...
Leave username blank & in password use admin in lower case...
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
    Click on the Wireless tab
    - Here select manual configuration...Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
    - Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbours network...
    - Set the Radio Band to Standard-20MHz and change the Standard channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on Save Settings...
Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...
    For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WPA, For Encryption, select AES...For Passphrase input your desired WPA Key. For example , MySecretKey , This will serve as your network key whenever you connect to your wireless network. Do NOT give this key to anyone and remember the key.
NOTE : Passphrase should be more that 8 characters...
    Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
Change the Beacon Interval to 75 >>Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 >>Click on "Save Settings"...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...

  • Iphone 3gs extreme weak wifi signal with wrt160N - suggestions?

    Linksys wrt160N v3.0.00 build 010 Jan 30, 2009
    iphone 3gs firmware v3.1.2
Set up network to include a few laptops with N cards, a PS3 – all ok
When it comes out of sleep mode it connects at full signal strength , then within 15 seconds drops to just the one dot
Under a dLink G router, full signal strength right up to 30 feet outside of the house
Here in condo just purchased the Linksys and standing right next to it i get a practically non existant wifi signal
Go back to parents house with g router , works perfectly.
I thought the N router is set up to be backward compatible and if need be broadcast in G mode for G devices
Is there anything I should be aware of in the settings.
I followed the basic setup - no manual fiddeling with any of the settings.

    1. You can check all the settings through the web interface at http://192.168.1.1/
    2. As long as your iPhone maintains a connection and does not really slow down it does not matter how many bars the iPhone shows. I think the iPhone has problems calculating the correct signal strength on 802.11n routers. I have seen something similar on a dlink router. My iPhone jumped from 5 to 1 and back. Most of the time it was at 1 bar. Yet, I had perfect connections and normal internet speed. Thus, check internet functions on your iPhone. Unless you loose connections or they get extremely slow I would simply ignore it.
Problem being is that I'm not sure where to check via the web interface as to what mode it's on right out of the box.
The only way, recalling from last night's attempts, is if I go in and select the manual settings option rather than the wifi protected button, which would then allow me to enter manual settings.
Only there, would I know what it would be set at because I would obviously have to set it. I'd rather not go into changing manual settings unless absolutely necessary at this point.
As for the iphone not displaying the signal strength correctly - I'd have to say it is, given the following download speed test results: 27, 95 , 28, 149 kbps (not the most spectacular) compared to say 9388 kbps when the iPhone initially comes out of sleep and connects to the network. The signal drops to the one dot within about 10-15 seconds approximately.
With the old dLink G router, the signal strength registered full and download speed tests supported that, same as outlined above with the weak signal and corresponding d/l results.

  • Connecting WRT160N with DSL in windows 7 ultimate - A big Challenge!

    Hello!
Connecting the Router wrt160n v3 with DSL connection in windows 7 ultimate has become a great challenge for me. I have been trying for the last two days. I have read and tried all the suggestions as advised to others in this forum, but unfortunately nothing worked out for me. I reset the router and modem many times. Today I installed the router's firmware from Linksys site but it was a useless effort. The interesting part is the router was working on my PC in windows 7, but for some reason I re-installed the windows and now I can't make it to work again.  I am adding IPCONFIG information below:

Thanks to all who replied. I followed the link from "Toomanydonuts" to make sure that my computer does not have any static ip address and that it runs on DHCP. • Strange difficulites with WRT160n

I have added a WRT160n rev3 to my system at home.
The wireless is working fine. Problem is the wired port. I have updated the router to the latest firmware and the NIC is a Atheros L1 Gigabit Ethernet with the latest driver.
I am running Windows 7 and the problem is:
When I turn on the system the NIC produces a (!) from the start.
If you disable and reenable the network from the OS the NIC will work.
    I am using Verizon internet.
The router is to set to DCHP and the others are defaulted.
I did have another linksys router attached before putting on the WRT160n.
    Any suggestions?

The exclamation mark means that the device's driver isn't properly installed, or that its misconfigured or BIOS not assigning resources correctly.Check this link.

  • Problems with WRT160N and Xbox 360 - please help

    Hello,
I have recently purchased a WRT160N router and when I play games online (Halo 3 or Modern Warfare 2) it takes around 10 min to find a game while in the lobby. I don't get kicked out or signed out of my profile it just takes a long time. It says that my NAT type is Open. I have isolated that the problem is the router because if I plug an ethernet cable from the 360 to the DSL modem I find games instantly. I have looked up port forwarding and opened the ports on the 360 and specifically for modern warfare 2 and it actually made my NAT type go to strict, ironic. I have spent 5 hours trying to mess with this and can't seem to get it working right. If someone could please help me on the settings or have any other ideas that would be greatly appreciated.
    Solved!

I have already tried reducing the MTU as well as the Beacon Level, Threshold, and Fragmentation. That did not work. To get the ip address of the modem is where I do cmd prompt ipconfig right. If so, I have not done that yet and since I am at work I will do that when I get home. the ports I have opened on the router for the xbox were 80, 88, 53, and 3074. Like I said when I did that it actually got worse cause my NAT was open but then it went to Strict.

  • Conflict with WRT160N and Windows Wireless Network Connection

I have a WRT160N router connected to a Verizon FIOS cable modem with five computers (all Windows based) wirelessly connected to the N router.  Four of the computers auto detect the N router connection when the computer starts up using Windows Wireless Network Connection and operate well.  One of the computers, which is the only one running Easylink for router configuration, will not connect through the Wireless Network Connection.  I have to use Easylink to manually connect.  The WNC gives a msg that Windows cannot configure this wireless connection and to configure the wireless connection using Wireless Zero Configuration service.  When I configure WZC correctly the WNC sees all available networks and allows me to select the Advanced Wireless checkbox to allow Windows to connect to the wireless network.  However, when I reboot the computer none of the configuration parameters are saved and I am back to manually connecting using Easylink and going through the entire process again.   Any suggestions?    Thx

Uninstall the EasyLink and connect manually. I think EasyLink 3.0 or later is coming soon ..

  • Having trouble with WRT160n

I just bought a Linksys WRT160n router yesterday, and was configuring it.
When I try to connect to the router on my computers, it doesnt connect right.
During the configuration, there was a problem, but I think it still configured anyway. Is there any way to re-configure it and try it again?

To start over again, first, reset the router to factory defaults.  Then use the CD and follow the setup instructions that came with the router.
To reset your router to factory defaults, use the following procedure:
    1) Power down all computers, the router, and the modem, and unplug them from the wall.
    2) Disconnect all wires from the router.
    3) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    4) Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds, then release it, then let the router reset and reboot (2-3 minutes).
    5) Power down the router.
    6) Connect one computer by wire to port 1 on the router (NOT to the internet port).
    7) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    8) Power up the computer (if the computer has a wireless card, make sure it is off).
    9) Try to ping the router. To do this, click the "Start" button > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt. A black DOS box will appear. Enter the following: "ping 192.168.1.1" (no quotes), and hit the Enter key. You will see 3 or 4 lines that start either with "Reply from ... " or "Request timed out." If you see "Reply from ...", your computer has found your router.
    10) Open your browser and point it to 192.168.1.1. This will take you to your router's login page. Leave the user name blank, and in the password field, enter "admin" (with no quotes). This will take you to your router setup page. Note the version number of your firmware (usually listed near upper right corner of screen). Exit your browser.
If you get this far without problems, try the setup disk (or setup the router manually, if you prefer), and see if you can get your router setup and working.
If you cannot get "Reply from ..." in step 9 above, your router is likely dead. Report back with this problem
If you get a reply in step 9, but cannot complete step 10, then either your router is dead or the firmware is corrupt. Report back with this problem.
If you need additional help, please state your ISP, the make and model of your modem, your router's firmware version, and the results of steps 9 and 10. Also, if you get any error messages, copy them exactly and report back.
Please let me know how things turn out for you.

  • Wrt160n with Axis 207w wireless wifi security camera

I can't see the linksys wrt160n in the setup of my wireless security camera. I have the router in default settings, with ssid broadcast enabled. I have tried the different settings, with Radio Band Standard Channel Network Mode. But never do I see the router in the setup of my camera. I see all the other routers in the street and have used the camera for years with my 3com wireless-access point. Wired the camera works fine with the router.

You should use a unique SSID name do not use Linksys. Lets say you use Canadian as your SSID  When you view wireless network Canadian Secured network should appear in wireless network or profiles for your camera.
It does not matter if there is more than one network showing in the list.  It matters that you connect to the correct network.

  • Slow speeds with WRT160N

I recently purchased a WRT160N wirless router to upgrade from an old 802.11b that I've had forever. I set it up with WPA2 Personal Security with TKIP encryption. My PC is one floor away from the router, which I understand will cause some signal degredation.
My PC has a linksys wireless-G NIC.
I have been experiencing varying connection speeds to the router, when first booting the PC it will report connected at 54Mbps reading a Very Good signal strength, but it will eventually sink to around 10-5Mbps reading a Low signal strength.
I'll be honest, my connection speeds in games are no better than with my crappy old 802.11b router, now you would think that I would experience at least some improvement.
Has anyone else experienced similar problems or have any suggestions?

Possibly the WRT610N is not working properly with G devices .... keep the router away from the computer or PS3 ... & then check the connection speed .....
