Wrt160n & wre54g

I am trying to set up a large wireless network and have a wrt160n router.  I am wondering if the  WRE54G wireless-g range expander would work with this router and boost the  standard channel 2.4ghz radio waves it sends so that wireless-G adapters would get the increased range?
Thanks

I was trying to go from my house 300 ft. thru the woods to a cottage I built.  It worked like a charm  I went from no signal before to good-excellent depending on where I am in the cottage.
Thanks for your help

  • WRE54G is already connected to WRT160N Router, but can not get access to internet?

    Hello,,,
I have seven of rung expanders WRE54G and all settings i set as this link
    http://linksys.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/linksys.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=4104&p_created=11611...
    * same wireless SSID name
    * same Channle  ( What is the difference between the channel number 6 & number 11 for example?)
    * security ( i used WPA2 mixed, that is not in WRE54G, so what i should use)
    * Each Expander has own IP address as 192.168.1.2 up to 192.168.1.8
Is the gateway mean the main IP of router 192.168.1.1 ?
all those expanders connected with WRT160N ( the Link gets Blue light)
but my laptop can not get the IP address near of any of those expanders, to get the access to the internet!!!!
    What is the reason please?

I am very happy to communicate with you ( I sure i can learn some thing from you my brother )
Your words are true seven the number of expanders is not easy option
or the cause of the success of the wireless network coverage May succeed strengthened,
with one or two, but more than that needs to be a better distributor.
I think I will use RangePlus WRT110 as repeater in some floor where the wireless signal
is not can work, after connecting through the wire with the main router,
and then I can get half the reference from the repeater when i useing the WRE54G expander
    What do you think?!!
I put on my experience on this link

  • Will a WRE54G repeater work with a WRT160N router?

I'm using a WRT160N router and only getting 2 bars out of 5; fair signal. A friend has offered to sell me a WRE54G range expander. Will a G repeater work with an N router?

Yes,the WRE54G should work with WRT160N...You need to match all the wireless settings of the router to the range expander and it should work then.

  • WRT160N to WRE54g Workgroup resolution issues

First of all, thank you in advance for any assistance.
I have a WRT160N as my wifi router to my cable modem. All computers have been connected to it and can network together fine.
I recently added a WRE54G Wifi Extender V.3 to the WRT160N using the manual setup, which functions decently and allows for all computers connected to it to ntework to each other, which includes workgroup names resolution.  I have the static IP address, Mask and Gateway all set to point at the WRT160N and in the same subnet.
I am not, however, able to achieve names resolution in my WORKGROUP or IP networking from the laptop which is wirelessly connected or the desktop hardwired  to the WRT160N to any of the computers connected to the WRE54G.  I suspect that I need to have a routing table entry that allows me to route networking requests to the Wifi extender and on to its connected computers.
I receive a "network path not found" error when trying to explore the computers connected to the WRE54G, even though I can ping them and I see their name in the Workgroup Names list in Network places
May I please request someone's assistance in solving this issue?
    Thank you.

Without the Range Expander connected in your network are you able to access all your computer when they are connected to the Router?
The computers which are connected to Range Expander from that computer try to ping the computers which are connected to the Router. Also make sure if there is any firewall or antivirus on your computer Disable it and the try again.. Also make sure all the computers are in the same Workgroup and the AP Isolation is Disable on your Router.

  • Use WRE54G with WRT160N

I have WRT160N, v1.02.2.  Still have weak zones, need range entender or additional access point.  Can I use the WRE54G?  Is there a better option

Well the Range Expander doesn't work with the N-router.Its not compatible.Would suggest you to get the G-series router in order to make the Range Expander work.

  • WRE54G wireless extender problem with WRT600N wireless router

My Vista laptops work fine with the WRT600N router but not with the WRE54G extender. On the other hand my XP laptop works fine with the wireless extender so I know that both router and extender are working. Linksys tech support told me that the WRE54G is not compatible with the WRT600N, which is simply not true. With my XP laptop the signal goes from poor (5-10 Mbps) without the extender to excellent (54 Mbps) with the extender. Also, the lower blue light on the extender blinks indicating data transmission. I can access the setup page of the extender only with the XP laptop and wired desktop computers but not the Vista laptops. I suspect there is a Vista network setting that is the problem. I've turned off the firewall but to no avail. I've also switched between mixed mode and G-only, which made no difference. Anybody have any suggestions?

I have a secure wireless network (WPA). Perhaps my 4-5 year old XP laptop is the only laptop on the planet that works with the WRE54G-WRT600N combination. But I can assure all the doubters that this laptop categorically works flawlessly when I would otherwise be out of range without an extender. Good luck to spalaw. Please let me know if you are get your WRT160n to work with the WRE54G, especially you're able to connect with a Vista laptop.
    Hi
I am Afraid and wont be surprised if ya all people are nt able to use a N series Router with a G series Range Expander !
the Reasons is simple - N series is not BackWard Compatible as u check out the sources around. (Back Ward Compatible means compatible with the previous versions for its wireless Band , e:g - G band and B band.)
as far as my experience is concerned regarding the Range Expanders , me and my bud wasted a whole Week Configuring a WRT350N and WRE54G v3 , and it worked somehow on the seventh day  for an hour and Lost the connection again! Dayumm !
and we tried setting up with the same expander with WRT54GS v7.2 , it worked like a charm.
Conclusion : " WRE54G is a g series 2.4 Ghz expander which will work fine with all g series router though may not work with N Serious routers."
and if you really wish to Use something which can actually Extend the range for ur N routers signals , Better go for WAP4400N !!!!!!
And if someone still wish to run around , wanna try some tweaks (which i dont preferr )!
for WRT600N , just enable 2.4ghz band . as Range expander doesnt support 5 Mhz.
Use Only standard Channels . e.g : 1,9,3,11 .(No Wide and stuff.)
Try using WEP encryption first . (cause thats how we made WRT350N worked for a while. sighs)
At last , Wish u Luck.

  • WRT160N need to expand range....

Hi i have a WRT160N router, 2 floors below the computer im on now, is there anything i can buy to boost the wireless N signal up to the WUSB300N (usb adapter) for my old wireless-G network i use to use the WRE54G. (wireless-g expander) but i dont think there is such a thing for wireless-N.. what can i do?..

Try getting the wireless access point WAP54G in order to increase the network or boost the wireless signal...Also, for the N-series router & adapter open the setup page of router using 192.168.1.1 then put in the password as admin...all you need to do is do the wireless settings such as Radio Band Frequency to Standard 20 MHZ frequency, channel to 11.
Also, the advanced wireless settings to Beacon Interval=50,Frag
    thres=2306 & Rts thres=2307 & then uncheck a Block Anonymous Internet
Requests & it will definately work!!!

  • WRT160N Version 3; SERIOUS HELP NEEDED FOR SETUP PLZ??!?!?!

I bought this router probably around 3 weeks ago.
The following is a list of chronological scenarios that i have tried in order to install it and everything during the first week that i got it:
    1. I followed the CD's instructions, got LELA, but then when i used LELA to 'add another computer' it just gave an error, and then after this i could not be screwed using LELA anymore and so i uninstalled it, and then went online to 192.168.1.1 to configure the settings of the router, SSID, password and security which i put was WPA2 etc.
BUT THIS DID not work at all, i have 2 laptops, 1 of them which is new, and the other which was a couple of years old, they could not detect anything.
    2. I then did some internet research, and read on these forums that i needed to change some of its advanced wireless settings, i did that. And then I could actually connect......and was extremely happy at this moment, BUT the next day i noticed, that even though i was about a metre away from the router, my speed was varying BADLY, initially when i first connect with my new laptop which has a Intel Wifi 5100AGN adapter it has a speed of 144mbps, but when i open internet explorer, i see the speed going slower and slower, until it is 1mbps, and sometimes the wireless just cuts out. This happened to my other laptop as well.
    3. I then called for technical assistance, spent so much time talking trying to solve, and downloaded the latest firmware, reflashed the router, but still it has this problem of slowing speeds which is really frustrating.
And doing some more talking and following more instructions from the person on the phone, both my laptops could not connect to the router, even though it can see it at 'Excellent' connectivity.
    4. And so, the person on the phone concluded that i should exchange the router with new one, which i am planning to do, and will probably get it tomorrow. But i am also thinking to myself whether or not to get a different one.
    SOME NOTES:
-When it is wired the internet works fine
-the adapter in the older laptop is a intel 2200BG, so i know that it would probably go at a max speed of 54mbps
-when i said changing advanced wireless settings, i meant changing frequency/RTS/beacon levels etc to the values i have seen on these fourms.
CURRENTLY, since i am exchanging i have gone back to the old ASUS router which is G. and it connects well with the old laptop with a constant speed of 54mbps, but havent tried the new laptop as i can not be bothered. Also my main reason of getting a N router is just for range, because with the current one, i just cannot detect the router when i am in my bedroom, which is less than 20m, even if i can detect it is is very poor connectivity, WHERE AS with the WRT160n before i exchanged it, i could detect at first with Excellent connectivity, but as i said, the problems with speed and wireless cutting out etc is what results from this router.
I guess my main point is that, i want to ask any of you have used the VERSION 3 of WRT160N, and is currently working very well wirelessly. Can u please tell me the step-by-step instructions to help me set this router perfectly?
    regards

Try updating both of your laptops wireless cards that could fix the problem (you know may not be compatible with your WRT160N).
I know you said you changed the channel your router broadcasting in but do you have a lot of other wireless networks in your area???
    GoodLuck
    Matt

  • Intermittent network performance with WRE54G on Vista, and no Xbox 360 connectivity

I bought a WRE54G this week to help with some network dead spots in my home after moving house.
So far I've only had no real success - configuration seemed to take a while to work through (by the time I got the WPA PSK worked out) but now I at least have 2 blue lights on the device all the time.
On my Windows Vista Business laptop (Toshiba Tecra M400 with latest drivers) in my office (a deadspot) I can connect to the network and WirelessMon reports consistent signal strength of 60% with occasional drops to 40%. However although the connection seems to remain constant, connectivity is not. I seem to suffer severe degredation of network connectivity - streamed video will not buffer correctly and times out; connections to my corporate Exchange server are not retained. My guess is that the laptop is doing something like switching between the router WiFi network and the WRE54G network, although i I switch off the WRE54G I lose all network connectivity to my latptop in my office.
On my xbox 360 (using the Microsoft XBox 360 wireless network adaptor) I am also having problems. Once or twice I have successfully been given an IP address and then failed to get DNS servers. This evening I don't even get an IP address.
I'm stuck - I've tried a LOT of things and not achieved any luck. Can anyone suggest anything, or do I have a faulty range expander.
    Details below....
My ADSL router is an SMCWBRA79042 which does support WDS. All the devices in my house worked correctly with this router in my old house before introducing the WRE54G.
I use WPA PSK, TKIP. However I've also tried to get things working without any security at all, and then adding in security functionality afterwards.
I have already upgraded the firmware on my WRE54G to the latest version on the linksys web site.
I have tried using different channels. Initially I was on 8 (it was a free channel in my neighbourhood) but also have tried 11 and am now on 6.
I have tried changing the beacon to 50 and reducing the RTS and fragmentation thresholds to 2250.

    Hi
Have u checked the compatibility of manufacturer's of these two devices i.e ADSL Router & Range Expander ( IMP * version No of WRE54G ) .
    Cheers. !

  • WRE54G and WAP54G DHCP Problem

    Hi,
    Please can someone help me.
    Current setup:-
Cisco ASA 5505 with DHCP Server enabled on the inside interface.
Linksys  WAP54G cabled directly into the above interface on the Cisco ASA.
Linksys WRE54G with a wireless connection to the above access point using the same SSID and Channel.
When connecting my laptop to the linksys access point, the laptop obtains an IP address allocated from the Cisco ASA and works perfectly.
When adding the WRE range extender into the mix and connecting my laptop via the extender the laptop fails to obtain an IP address. The extender is connecting to the AP ok, it has 2 blue lights and i get a strong signal.
I have carried out packet captures on both my laptop and the inside interface of the CISCO ASA. The capture on my laptop shows DHCP discovery packets leaving my wireless interface, however, i receive no acknowledgement. when i run the same capture on the Cisco ASA i see the discovery packet hit the interface and a subsequent dhcp offer packet leave the interface, however, the offer packet does not reach the laptop when connecting via the extender.
Can anyone kindly offer any advise that doesnt involve throwing the extender in the bin!!?
    Thanks

The WRE54G is connected after the WAP.
The router's IP is 10.10.10.254 and is configured to allocate DHCP addresses within this range.
The AP's management IP is 10.10.10.1 and the gateway is 10.10.10.254 (router address).
The Extender's management IP is 10.10.10.2 and the gateway is 10.10.10.254 (router address).
When connecting to the wireless network via the AP, it connects and receives an address.
When connecting to the wireless network via the extender, it connects but does not receive a DHCP address. Signal is strong and the extender shows both blue lights.

  • How to connect my Mac Book Pro to Linksys WRT160N router

    HI,
I just bought a   Linksys WRT160N router. I pop the installation disk in my mac book pro and walk thru the installation procedure successfully.
But I can't connect wirelessly from my MacBook Pro (running mac os x 10.5).
It sees the router and I did type in the password correctly (i copy from the text file generated by the installation procedure), but I keep getting 'coonnection timeout'.
Anyone has similar problem and know how to fix it?
    Thank you.

I experienced this behavior today.  My client had a WRT160N version 3 running on firmware 3.0.02.  I upgraded it to the current version, 3.0.03, because checking for upgrades is part of the service I provide to my clients.  After that point, I could not connect wirelessly -- I got the "connection timeout" message every time I provided the password.  Reviewing the firmware release notes, I saw a mention of "Fixed wireless channel 11 being unstable."  My client was operating on channel 11.  When I moved the router to channel 1, bingo -- the wireless connected perfectly.  And no, no one in the vicinity was running another network on 11 -- there was only one other, and he was on 6, which is non-overlapping.
The best part was when I called Cisco for help and got told there would be a charge for assistance to solve the problem their own firmware obviously caused, that (unlike every other manufacturer in the business) they don't recommend people upgrading their firmware unless something is clearly broken (where is that on the website or in the upgrade instructions, please?), and that they don't keep copies of the older firmware.

  • How do I make an Airport Extreme work with a Linksys WRT160N

I have a Linksys WRT160N V3 Router that I have connected to my cable modem. I have an iMac in another room along with a PC based laptop. Range is fine to get them to connect wirelessly. However what I would like to do is to also connect my Blu-Ray device to the internet. However it isn't wireless. I was told I could use an Airport Extreme to bridge to my WRT160N. What I want to do is hardwire connect my Blu-Ray player and perhaps my iMac to the Airport Extreme using my WRT160n's access to the cable modem. Basically I'm trying to make to wirelss routers talk to each other. I can't seem to make the Airport Extreme work. Any assistance would be great.
    Thanks,
    Tim

    Welcome to the discussions, Gonzotoo!
+I was told I could use an Airport Extreme to bridge to my WRT160N+
Unfortunately, this is not correct. The AirPort Extreme does not have the capability that you need. If you could connect the Linksys and Extreme together using an ethernet cable, it would function as you wish. Or, if it's not possible to connect them using an ethernet cable, you might take a look at a pair of ethernet powerline adapters to accomplish the same task by using the AC wiring in your home.

  • Is it possible to use more than one WRE54G? Is it a good idea?

I live in a four-story building.  The cable modem is on the 4th floor - it can't be moved (just accept that).  I have a WRE54G connected and on the first floor - the signal is sporadic.  For example, it is ok with the laptop most of the time but fluctuates a lot with the iPads we use.
Is it possible to set up some kind of relay system so that we will have a consistent signal?  I could locate a second WRE54G on the second floor (or third floor).
I've read that the signal rate (?) is reduced by one-half, so will this create more problems than solutions?
    Thanks.
Please respond in English - no Geek speak!  Thanks.

Yes, you can use 2 range expander together but make sure that the ip address of  both the expanders should be different.

  • When I Disable NAT on my WRT160N I can no longer access the Internet

    Hello,
I have had my WRT160N configured and working great for months now.  I had some non-related cable problems and the cable guy split my cable and now I have a specific modem just for the internet.  I can connect to the internet directly and wirelessly great!  However, I went into my XBox 360 to play some Halo 3 and it yelled at me that I should Disable the NAT.  I thought this was odd since my WRT160N is still the same piece of hardware and I believe that is where I disabled the NAT months ago and that it should Still have that same setting.  Apparently not?  So I connected to it and sure enough it was Enabled.  I disabled it and now I can no longer connect directly or wirelessly to the internet.  Of course, if I set it back to Enabled NAT then I can get to the internet again.  I need to turn off NAT.
Not sure what to do here.   Can it be on the cable modem (Time Warner Cable) where the problem resides?  Would IT have a configurable setting for NAT?
Any suggestions would be most appreciated.
    Kevin
