WRT160NL - Does not see my Seagate 320Gb external drive

I plugged my Seagate 320Gb external drive into the USB port of my WRT160NL and I am seeing.a blank page. No titles, nothing!
This drive is formatted to FAT32 and I have been using it plugged into my PC for a couple of years.
Any ideas what I am doing wrong?

Check this for the USB drive which is compatible for WRT160NL.

    From the menu bar, select
 ▹ System Preferences ▹ Energy Saver ▹ Power Adapter
and uncheck the box labeled Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible, if it's checked.
If the drive has more than one interface (USB, FireWire, Thunderbolt, eSATA), try one of the other interfaces.
Check that the data cable is securely inserted at both ends.
    Try a different cable.
If you're connecting the drive through a hub, connect it directly to a built-in port on the Mac.
If you're connecting it directly, try a different port.
Disconnect all other devices on the bus, or as many as possible.
Test the drive with another Mac. Test another drive with this Mac.
If the drive is bus-powered, but has an AC adapter, connect the adapter.
Start up in Recovery mode and launch Disk Utility. Is the drive recognized?
Start up in Safe Mode and test.
    Reset the NVRAM.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If the drive doesn't work under any of the above conditions, and if another drive does work with the same Mac, then the drive is malfunctioning.

  • Time Machine does not see a Time Capsule external drive

Time Machine will not recognize an external drive attached to my Time Capsule, even though it did so last week. How do I get it working again?
Until last week, I was using Time Machine to back up to a Verbatim 2 TB drive attached to a Time Capsule. It occasionally hung, requiring me to restart the Time Capsule in order to get backups working again, so I bought a Seagate 2 TB drive to replace the Verbatim in case the problem was a flaky drive. Now I can't get Time Machine to recognize either disk when the disk is attached to the Time Capsule.
Both disks are formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Both disks work correctly when I attach them directly to my Mac. When I attach either disk to the Time Capsule, Airport Utility shows the external drive, shows that sharing is enabled, and I can even mount the Time Capsule with Finder and see the external disk with Finder. But when I try to Select Disk in Time Machine Preferences, whether or not the Time Capsule is mounted with Finder, Time Machine Preferences doesn't see the disk—the only choices of disk are My User Account on the Time Capsule, and Other Time Capsule.
Restarting my Mac and restarting the Time Capsule does not help. Software and firmware updates are (and have been) up to date. I'm running OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 and Time Capsule version 7.6.4.
To reiterate, this was working a week ago. How do I get it working again?

If nothing in your configuration has changed, you can try plugging the disks one at a time directly into your mac, run Disk Utility and perform a Repair Disk. If any errors are displayed, rerun Repair Disk until there are none. Then try them back on the Time Capsule.

You don't see drives when using a hardware RAID only the volumes.
WD Green are not suitable for hardware RAID (or software RAID for that matter).
USB2 and TimeMachine are a disaster waiting to happen. I've used SATA (internal) and eSATA (using SATA PCIe cards) trouble-free.
I can't say I begin to understand your use or "choosing the install drive for the backup"
    Install what?
You don't load TimeMachine. Maybe seems minor but that is not how to describe the behavior of software.

  • IMac G5 with OSX 10.5.8 does not recognize my Western Digital external drive containing the majority of my music library.  Is there any way to access that drive and recover the music stored there?

I have an iMac G5 with OSX 10.5.8 that does not recognize my Western Digital external drive.  I had no problems with this until I upgraded to 10.5.  Most of my music library is stored on the external drive.  Is there any way to access it to recover the music?

How is it connected?  Have you tried different port?  How about logging in as a different user then trying to mount the drive.

  • Aperture not seeing iPhoto Libraries on external drive when trying to do a REFERENCED import.

I am trying to bring all my iPhoto libraries (one for each year) together into one REFERENCED Aperture library.  I have the iPhoto libraries on an external hard drive and want the Aperture Library on my main drive.  Whe I go to the Import window I do see my external hard drive on the list of drives, but the files do not show up.  It shows folders and any readable files in the folders, but not the iPhoto Libraries, which are not in any folders.  I am running out of space on my hard drive, so want to do a referenced import, not a managed one, but I can't seem to get it to work.  I have tried doing the copy drag and drop method (holding command+option and dragging and dropping from finder to Aperture, but it still copies the whole library to the main drive, it does not reference it).  Help, please!

Whe I go to the Import window I do see my external hard drive on the list of drives, but the files do not show up.
Aperture will not show you files in libraries in the import panel.  iPhoto libraries are not imported using the import panel. Importing the files using the import panel would result in importing a mess of thumbnails, previews, and originals, and you would lose your organisation in events and albums and probably  most of your metadata tags.
You import iPhoto Libraries as library:
    File > Import > Library
If the library you are importing is referenced, it will be imported referenced, if it is managed, the images will be imported managed. You can relocate the managed originals to your external volume directly after import using the command "File > Relocate originals"
See: Aperture 3.3: How to use Aperture to merge iPhoto libraries

  • Mac mini core2 duo 10.7.2 not seeing files on usb external drives - mac formatted - ownership ignored-  until finder refresh - any idea

finder has problems showing folders& files on external drives on mac mini with 10.7.2
this is affecting 2 external usb drives both mac formatted - ownership ignored
i click on the drive and see nothing
a refresh of the finder window will make the files appear
if i click on a disclosure arrow, the arrow turns down but no files are displayed
if i double click on the folder it opens that folder in an empty view - a refresh will bring the files visible
interestingly if i eject the drive and plug back it , it will usually display the contents of folders already visited last time but not folders i hadn't looked at - they require a refresh
programs such as iTunes can link to those files when they are not visible in finder
anyone else run into this - any suggestions
oh and drives seem to be working fine on my macbook pro with 10.7.3
    cheers folks
    Simon

John -I'm pretty sure it the mac mini thats having the issue
the two drives - each with their own cable - seem to work perfectly with my other mac
the mac mini is having no problem reading the files itunes and other programs access the files on the drives without a problem
its just the finder is not displaying the files without a refresh of the view
    but thanks anyway

  • Lion does not recognizes the superdrive as external drive

    Hello,
After having replaced my superdrive for a SSD in my macbook, I look for a solution to retrieve the original superdrive in Lion.
the superdrive is now contained in a slim box firstcom. Each time i plug the drive via USB, it starts normally but i have no software able to detect it (even VLC)
I already did this method but with no success : http://macenstein.com/default/2011/07/how-to-get-your-external-super-drive-worki ng-in-lion/
That would be great if somebody can give me some help to solve it.
    Thank you for your responses.

I do not think, that replacing the superdrive by another drive is a hack. It probably does not influence the warranty. Changing the HDD by a another HDD or SSD does void your warranty, I think.
Can you not even "mount" the external superdrive with Disk Utility?
But I have another question for you: do you use the SSD for the OS? If yes: why did you not put it in the place of the HDD and the HDD in the superdrive slot (if both are the 2.5" type)? Because with earlier MBP's the Superdrive Sata connection has a lower speed than the HDD Sata connection, which means that you can have even more speed advantages by putting the SSD in the HDD place and place the slower HDD in the Superdrive location.
But, like ds said, on Bmer's forum you will certainly find the answers on your issue.

  • ITunes not seeing music library on external drive?

I recently moved my iTunes to an external hard drive. I read the instructions on the apple support site on how to do everything. It said, down at the bottom of the article, that the hard drive must be opened before you launch iTunes in order for iTunes to see the library. Although I did everything instructed my iTunes, when launched, is not seeing any of the files that are on my external hard drive. They are still on the hard drive and I am scared to do anything more without some help for fear I may lose the data on my hard drive. Help!!

If you copied the music to the external drive yourself, you did not do it correctly.
Do you see any music when you open iTunes?

  • IMac does not see Nikon D300 camera as drive in finder

Please help. I bought this iMac for processing and printing my photography. In Windows 7 I can just plug my camera into the usb port and it sees the camera and the folder containing the photos I want to download onto the hard drive. I do the same thing on the iMac and I don't see the camera or folder anywhere. The LED on the camera flashes as if something is being read, but nothing pops up on the desktop or the finder window. What am I missing? Thanks for any help.

Have you checked your Finder Preferences (General tab) that external disks, etc are all checked to show on desktop? Also, have you checked your iPhoto Preferences to see what the setting is for "connecting camera opens..."? And, lastly, have you simply tried to use a card reader with your camera card? That is what I do; I simply want the card icon to show on my desktop; this method also saves the camera's batteries. Some camera brands do present a few problems (my Canon does) - the easy workaround is using a card reader.

  • My mac Doesn't seem to see my external hard drive (seagate 1tb) I have it usb'd in to the back of my computer, but when I open time machine...it does not see it. Help

  • FCPX does not see my external drive?

Need some help. When I open FCP it identifies my external hard drive for a second or two but then it disappears. I can see it in the finder and on my desktop no problem. Also, when I start a new event it does not see my external videos hard drive. It is a brand new Seagate - I have not used it for time machine back ups and before I upgraded to Lion it worked fine. Now I can't bring in projects that I saved to the external Hard drive. I'm new to this software so I would really appreciate some help as I can't even begin to contemplate doing this project a third time.

Take a look at the name of the drive, as well as to the names of folders at the root of that drive.
FCP is probably treating your drive as a camera. You may know for sure by selecting File->Import from Camera and see if your drive appears there.
Don't call your drive "Video", for instance - and avoid common names used in camera folders, like "DCIM".

  • HT201269 itunes cannot see my iphone backup.  I have a backup of the backup on an external HD, but even tech support cannot figure this one out.  I copy and paste backups into the correct folder but itunes still does not see it.  All I need are my contact

Sorry for short novel I am writing.  I just wanted to cover as much backround as possible.
So, here it goes.  I backed up my iphone 4 after renting a movie.  The movie only played the starting credits before I was called on for daddy duty.  A few days later the movie would not play, so I restored my phone from my backup.  The movie would still would not play so itunes support refunded my purchase and ended my viewing privileges for that rental after verifying that I had not viewed the movie.  I then had a problem with my contacts showing up twice in the contacts list after the restore.  So I attempted another restore.  All was well at this point.  I then started having trouble with my pc and decided to copy the internal drive to an external source.  A week later I had a system failure and did a factory restore on my computer.  I re-installed itunes and tried to copy and paste the old backup into the new itunes.  Now itunes just flat out does not see the backup file (I failed to mention that I did a factory reset on the iphone after the last backup, hopping to start fresh).  Tech support had me uninstall and re-install itunes and then copy and paste the old backup into the newly installed itunes with no luck.  The files are all there, but itunes just doesn't see them (itunes says the device has not been backed up to the cloud or to the local machine).  We then tried backing up the factory restored iphone and replacing that restore file with one of my old backups on the external drive.  Ok, this is where it gets weird.  We replaced the guts of the folder but left the folder itself so itunes would continue to recognize the new backup folder with the old files.  Whoohoo, itunes now see's a backup folder full of old files, or so we thought.  The new files were deleted using shift delete so they would be gone for good and not mix with any files or folders.  When I restore my phone, it restores the files that were deleted from the restore file (pause here for a moment and imagine the stupid look on the face of tech support and I while we silently wonder how files that were permanently deleted were restored).  This left tech support and I both scratching our heads.  My service issue was escalated to the next level.  I waited for the phone call the next day that was scheduled at 10am to my wife's phone, but the call never came through.  As usual, apple disappoints again.  I just bought an iphone 5s and still have the iphone 4, and am looking for a solution to retrieve my contacts and restore to the 4 or 5s.  I am guessing that files in other folders must be associated with the iphone backup in order for itunes to retrieve the files.  Any ideas or support in retrieving my contacts would be greatly appreciated.
