WRT160Nv2

I have the wrt160nv2 setup on my new computer that runs vista. when I try to connect to the router from my laptop that has windows xp it just says aquiring network addy and never connects. Please help this is driving me nuts I am downloading xp service pack 3 on my laptop hoping that is part of the problem. Any steps that would help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

Are you trying to connect to the router by wire or wirelessly?
In the computer, temporarily turn off your software firewall, including Windows Firewall, and see if that helps.
If you are trying to connect wirelessly, are you using encryption?  WEP?  WPA?  WPA2?

  • I can't make my new wrt160nv2 work at all

I have a linksys cablemodem and router befsr41v4.3. I've been running a vista machine and xp machine with no problems for the last 2 years. Just got a Toshiba laptap that we want to connect to the internet also but use around the house so bought a WRT160Nv2. Followed the install disk for installation, named a SSID, unplugged and plugged in and finally got a done message saying everything was installed and done.
Plugged in the two desktop computers and went to IE7 and got a cannot connect to the internet. Network diagnostics came up with everything working fine in the computer.
Played with the Toshiba and it says it found the network I had named but can't connect to the internet.
Ran the disk set up because there was no documentation in the box and while I was at it printed the pdf manual. After the disk set up ran again got a message that the eternet cable was not connected and for me to plug it in.
But the cable was plugged in.
When I return to the old set up (the befsr41 wired router) then the desk tops and the Toshiba can all surf the internet (I plugged in a cat5 cable into the Toshiba).
How do I tell if the wrt160 itself is broken (just bought it 3 days ago!)? It seems odd that both the Toshiba wireless portion and the desktop wired portion both can't get onto the internet and I get a message that the ethernet cable is not connected.
Not knowing very much about the wireless portion (worked with wired only and talked to the best buy guy about how easy it is to replace the befsr41 with the wrt160n) but after the install disk is done installing the program, is the Toshiba automatically supposed to find the router and connect? When I search the Toshiba and go to network properties it says it's connected "a" network called the same thing that I called the wrt160n during the setup and that I get 4 or 5 green bars showing the connection between the Toshiba and the wrt160n. But there is a big red X between the router and the internet.
I was expecting something a lot easier than this to be able to use the internet on the desktops through the wired ports and the Toshiba throughout the house through the wireless portion.
It seems odd that BOTH the wired and the wireless don't work at all. I could understand I don't know how to get the Toshiba to connect wirelessly and I need to play with it but when I can't connect at all makes me think the problem is in the wrt160n.
Any thoughts before I take this thing back to best buy?

If you are trying to configure your Router with the Setup disk, you can exit from the Setup and configure your Router Manually.
If your Internet Service Providor is Cable follow this link ----- Once you are able to go online from the Wired computer, Below are the Wireless Settings which you can set on your Router and this will make your Laptop go Online Wirelessly.
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...Leave username blank & in password use admin in lower case...
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -

    - Set the Radio Band to Standard-20MHz and change the Standard channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on Save Settings...
Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...
    For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WEP, Encryption should be 64 bit.Leave the passphrase blank, don't type in anything...Under WEP Key 1 type in any 10 numbers please(numbers only and no letters eg: your 10 digit phone number) and click on save settings...
Please make a note of WEP Key 1 as this is the Security Key for the Wireless Network...
    Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
Change the Beacon Interval to 75 >>Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 >>Click on "Save Settings"...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...

  • Wrt160nv2 wireless security help

Hello I'm new to this forum and had some questions regarding the wireless security settings on this router (WRT160Nv2) I have the security mode set to: WPA2 and what I need to know is which Encryption is better AES or the other setting which is TKIS or AES shouldint it be just TKIS? Any info would be great thanks still trying to figure out the router...

AES offers a higher level of encryption than TKIP, or "TKIP or AES".
Here are my other tips for setting up wireless security:
To set up wireless security, you must use a computer that is wired to the router.
Where to find the router settings: The router's login password is usually on one of the "Administration" pages. The other settings are all found in the "Wireless" or the "Security" section of the router's setup pages, located at 192.168.1.1
First, give your router a unique SSID. Don't use "linksys".
Make sure "SSID Broadcast" is set to "enabled".
Next, leave the router at its default wireless settings (except for the unique SSID), and then use your pc to connect wirelessly to the router. Test your wireless Internet connection and make sure it is working correctly. You must have a properly working wireless connection before setting up wireless security.
To implement wireless security, you need to do one step at a time, then verify that you can still connect your wireless computer to the router.
Next, encrypt your wireless system using the highest level of encryption that all of your wireless devices will support. Common encryption methods are:
WEP - poor (see note below)
WPA (sometimes called PSK, or WPA with TKIP) - good
WPA2 (sometimes called PSK2, or WPA with AES) - best
WPA and WPA2 sometimes come in versions of "personal", "enterprise" or "radius". Most home users should use "personal". Also, if you have a choice between AES and TKIP, and your wireless equipment is capable of both, choose AES. With any encryption method, you will need to supply a key (sometimes called a "password" ).
The wireless devices (computers, printers, etc.) that you have will need to be set up with the SSID, encryption method, and key that matches what you entered in the router.
Retest your system and verify that your wireless Internet connection is still working correctly.
And don't forget to give your router a new login password.
Picking Passwords (keys): You should never use a dictionary word as a password. If you use a dictionary word as a password, even WPA2 can be cracked in a few minutes. When you pick your login password and encryption key (or password or passphrase) you should use a random combination of capital letters, small letters, and numbers, but no spaces. A login password, should be 12 characters or more. WPA and WPA2 passwords should be at least 24 characters. Note: Your key, password, or passphrase must not have any spaces in it.
Most home users should have their routers set so that "remote management" of the router is disabled. If you must have this option enabled, then your login password must be increased to a minumum of 24 random characters.
One additional issue is that Windows XP requires a patch to run WPA2.   The patch is located in SP3, so you will need SP3 to run WPA2.
    Note:
WEP is no longer recommended. The FBI has demonstrated that WEP can be cracked in just a few minutes using software tools that are readily available over the Internet. Even a long random character password will not protect you with WEP. You should be using WPA or preferably WPA2 encryption.

  • Problem with WRT160NV2, both wired and wireless...

I bought a WRT160NV2 Refurbed from CompUSA about 2 weeks ago, and since then I've been having some problems.
It's not every site, but there are a few sites (three or four I've noticed)  that load very, very, very slowly. It happens using wired or wireless (Main PC is wired). I've tried rebooting both the router and modem multiple times (10 or 20 times at least) and looked through the forums and noticed some people said try setting the MTU to 1300. I tried that and it didn't seem to do anything, so I tried 1350, 1400, 1450, 1490, and 1100, with no results with either. When I connect using just my modem everything works fine. I'm frustrated because I can't find a solution to this. Any help would be appreciated.

Since you have already changed the MTU size on your Router and still facing the same problem, then i think you need to Re-flash / Upgrade the firmware of your Router...
Download the firmware from the Linksys website and then upload the firmware on your Router... Once the firmware is upgraded on your Router, then you need to reset the router and re-configure all the settings on it again...

  • Cannot connect to the internet from my MAC on WRT160Nv2 - no problems connecting from my PC

    Hi,
I have just bought a WRT160Nv2, but I am having problems connecting to the internet from my MAC (a powerbook with OS X) when I connect to the router wirelessly. If I try from my PC the Internet works fine. Also if I connect the MAC directly to the routers LAN port, the Internet works.
When I connect wirelessly from the MAC I do get an IP adress, and I am able to access the routers web configuration page. I can also see that the correct DNS gets assigned, so I am low on suggestions to what could be the problem.
Currently I have the router set up to WPA2 encryption, but I have tried different settings, e.g. no security at all with the same result.
I just tried upgrading to the newest firmware (WRT160Nv2_v2.0.02_008), also with no luck.
Also I should mention that the MAC can connect to other wireless connections without problems, e.g. my previous ZyXel DSL router.
Any ideas to what could be the problem?
    Thanks,
    Rasmus

Well maybe WPA2 Security is not compatible with Mac so change the Security mode to WEP or WPA and prepare security key of 10 digit password and while connecting to the wireless network on Mac type a $ sign first followed by the 10 digit passoword and it should work.

  • Accessing a WRT160Nv2 through a Netgear WG602v4 access point?

I need some sort of extender to ensure the wireless signals reaches upstairs in my house.  The only one that Best Buy was the Netgear WG602v4.  Doing my best to follow directions, I got the WG602 configured as the WRT160N from an SSID and security/password perspective.  However, none of the computers connected to the access point can access the Internet.  I've tried the WG602 both in point to point and repeater modes.
A number of the forums talk about settings that I don't seem to have on the WRT as well as something called WDS.
Does anyone know if I can use the WG602 as an access point for the WRT160N and, if so, how I can make it happen?
    Thanks.

Thanks for trying to help.  I wonder if the two devices just aren't compatible -- one is Linksys and the other is Netgear.
I've also been reading about something called WDS, and the WRT160Nv2 doesn't seem to have WDS - or at least I can't find it.
I can still get other devices to connect to the WG602v4, but no Internet through it.
You said to give the WG602v4 the same default gateway as the Linksys router.  According to my router that default gateway is 151.164.182.113.  However, when I enter that into the Netgear device, it won't take.
    Any more ideas from anyone?

  • WRT160Nv2 won't connect with Dell Wireless 1515 half-mini card

I just received a new Dell Studio 14z that has a Dell Wireless 1515 half-mini 802.11N card.  After messing around with it several times, I am still unable to get it to connect wirelessly to my WRT160Nv2 router.  Whenever I try to connect to the network, I get the following error from Windows Vista:
Wireless association failed because WIndows did not receive any response from the wireless router or access point.
I do use MAC Address filtering on the router, but I've added all 3 MAC address the system has (1 for wired, 1 for wireless, 1 for bluetooth).  I've also checked the WEP security key MANY times and am sure it is entered correctly.  I have also tried updating to the latest firmeware, 2.0.0.3 build 7.  Nothing seems to help at all.
I don't know what else to look at to determine the cause of the problem.  Does anyone have any suggestions about what the problem might be?
    Thank You

Did you reset the router after upgrading the router's firmware...If not then,Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds.Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...
For the wireless computer you need the Mac Address of the wireless Adapter while enabling  MAC Address filtering on the router.

  • WRT160Nv2 locking switch

We have two WRT160Nv2 routers here at my library. They loose connections very often. I had to restart one of them twice this week. But the big problem they create is, that they some times lock up a whole switch, Linksys 4124. This has happened at least three times in 2009 on two different switches.. It took me a while to find out, that it was the WRT160N routers that did this. We also have a couple of linksys WRT54GS and have had no problems with them. has anybody experienced the same problem?

Thanks Scrooge for trying to help.
Actually both. The WiFi network looses connections from the WRT160N. Four times last week on third floor network.
But the biggist problem is when the WRT160, locks uo a whole switch. This affects networked circulation computers, staff computers and printers.
I have changed the MTU to 1350 to see if it helps. It might take a while.
I checked the other WRT54 and MTU was set to Auto and we no trouble with them in any way. Looks like the Internet is full of complains of the WRT160N.

  • WRT160NV2 problems

Got a WRT160NV2 that is not working.
First, the power light is flashing constantly. I've tried the reset buttong for 30 sec/ 1 min then unplugging...but still flashed. I've downloaded the Firmware update, saved to desk top, but can't get it to open because it's a .bin file.
HELP. If I can't get this to work I'm gonna go get a new D-link.
    Thank you in advance!!!

Is this a new device?  No, about 12-18 months old
Has it suddenly started acting like this after working properly for some time? Yes
Did you attempt anything that could have caused problems (such as upgrading firmware or changing configuration) prior to the behaviour? I had been having issues with service going in and out. Windstream guided me through changing some of my DSL modem settings. Recommended checking for upgrades. tried doing the upgraded firmware, but couldn't figure out how to open the .bin file. It worked fine for 1-2 days AFTER this, then suddenly stopped working.
Have you tried starting it up with no external connections (other than power, of course), then adding them back one at a time if the router starts up? Yes, with power only it is flashing. Tried the reset, no luck.
Have you tried connecting to 192.168.1.1 (assuming you haven't changed the defaults) with a web browser from a PC connected directly to one of the Ethernet ports (not the WAN port)? Yes, does not connect.
    Thanks
I'm not sure whether it is possible to flash firmware on this device in the event that the admin interface is dead. Others may be able to help with this if you need to do it.

  • WRT160Nv2 questions - no firmware upgrades?

I just bought a WRT160Nv2 today, and although setting it up was very easy and quick..there's a couple of things I'm curious about...
    a) When I look for firmware upgrades, it only shows Version 1 and 3...not 2..why is that?? (I have version 2.0.02 build 008 Jul 27, 2008)
    b) Why is there no Wide-40MHz option in the Radio Band even though the 'help' clearly mentions it?? Is this a reason why I don't really notice a big difference in the range improvement over my old router? (Belkin 54g + another Belkin 54g router configured as AP) I have currently set the mode to MIXED, Radio Band to Standard 20MHz, and Standard channel on AUTO.
Will the Wide Channel only apply if I have Wireless-N devices on the network?
    Oh and I have a follow-up 3rd question:
    c) I have a WiFi capable mobile phone (Nokia E65) which has 802.11b capability, and so far I have not been able to get it to work with the new router. I currently have a 11b device (the phone I mentioned), 2-3 11g devices, and I've just bought a Wireless-N adapter (WUSB600N) which I'll be using on a desktop...I'm just wondering what will happen when all three types of devices are going to be used, and if they'll all be able to work together without detriment to another (I guess mainly if the 11b phone will be usable when the N-device is active)
Message Edited by deep_schismic on 05-27-2009 02:20 PM

Yes, your router does not have a Wide-40MHz option in the Radio Band...You should try to change the Standard Channel to 1/9/11 and see the difference, also you can change the Beacon Interval to 75, Fragmentation Threshold to 2304 and RTS Threshold to 2304 under Advanced Wireless Settings to improve wireless range...

  • WRT160Nv2-Problem with Single Port forward to multiple servers with same internal port numbers.

On my network I have 3 systems that I've set up as RDP hosts.  And need to get to all three of them externally.  So I'm trying to do the following single port forwarding.
    RDP 1   Forward 4000 to port 3389 for 192.168.1.11
    RDP 2   Forward 4001 to port 3389 for 192.168.1.12
    RDP 3   Forward 4002 to port 3389 for 192.168.1.14
When I hit "Save Changes" I get the error "Port range already exists".  So it's good that it won't let me overlap ports generally, but at the same time, I'm trying to send them to different IP address.  There should be no overlap in this case.  Please advise
I'm trying this on the WRT160Nv2 with firmware 2.0.02, which I had just bought this weekend.

    kevj,
Thanks for your suggestion.  I have now upgraded the firmware to 2.0.03 build 7.  But I am still seeing the error message
As I mentioned previously, I'm trying to single port forward to multiple machines in the following way:
    Machine 1:   Forward 4000 to port 3389 for 192.168.1.11
    Machine 2:   Forward 4001 to port 3389 for 192.168.1.12
    Machine 3:   Forward 4002 to port 3389 for 192.168.1.14
The error appears to be generated by the fact that 3389 is selected for multiple external port numbers, but the same internal port number.  The router I believe isn't taking into account that the similar internal port numbers aren't taking into account the different internal ip address I'm trying to send this to.
This would be a standard sort of practice for running a live HTTP server on one machine, and a new beta HTTP server behind the router on a secondary machine on the same internal port, but different external port numbers for test purposes from the outside.
    Please advise
    Thank you.

  • HELP with WRT160Nv2 (2 xbox one NAT)

I have 2 xbox ones in my house connected to the WRT160Nv2 router. I have tried literally everything. Port forwarding, triggering, uPnP, static IP's, blah blah blah. From the research I've done uPnP should be the only thing necessary to run two xboxes at the same time in the same game. Is this router's UPNP just total garbage? Is there a firmware update that will solve my problem? Please link me if so. I am currently running Firmware Version: v2.0.02  . (probably the default, but doing a few google searches people say some firmware updates for this router make it worse)
Please help me out because researching this stuff really gives me a headache after a while.
If this matters... We are able to play in the same games occasionally but often times one or both of us will drop out from the game. It's especially bad in call of duty. Sometimes I will drop even if the other xbox isn't even turned on, so i don't even know where to start.

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
Is ISP Modem/Service using Dynamic or Static WAN IP addressing?
What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link>http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAT6 is recommended.
Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask.
    http://kb.linksys.com/Linksys/ukp.aspx?vw=1&docid=88e63d78588142e6bb68e22d7faf2046_Configuring_the_M...
If the ISP modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems: Link>http://www.practicallynetworked.com/networking/fixing_double_nat.htm and http://computer.howstuffworks.com/nat.htm If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.
    Router and Wired Configurations
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting and maintain consistency for applications that need to connect as well as mapped drives.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Once IPs are reserved for both, Do a factory network reset on the XB1s to clear out any bad configurations.
    Turn OFF XB1s
Set up port range triggering using 0 and 65535.
    Keep uPnP enabled.
Disable any firewall temporarily for testing.
Save settings and reboot the router.
After router is back to ready, turn on one XB1 and check NAT. Turn on the 2nd XB1 and check NAT.

  • How to use SNMP on WRT160Nv2?

    Hello,
I would like to do some monitoring tests related to ISP DSL traffic calculations. I suspect it in false traffic calculations.
I would like to know if my WRT160Nv2 supports SNMP and how to access it (SNMP Community String etc.)?
    Thank you,
    Alexei Cornea

    Hello,
Unfortunately I can't use the solution that you suggested.
My Router is doing the PPPoE connection. "Internet" interface is connected to an ADSL Modem that is configured in Bridge mode. Linksys Router's IP is 192.168.0.1/32. Modem's IP address is 192.168.1.254/32. There's no possibility to access this IP from PCs (DHCP 192.168.0.0/28). On Linksys WRT160N it's not possible to route 192.168.1.254/32 to the "Internet" Interface because Linksys router itself don't have an IP from 192.168.1.0/24 and it is receiving it's public/internet ip through PPPoE protocol.
I have connections by LAN on all 4 ports and a few Wireless connections. All devices are doing downloading/uploading.
Unfortunately I can use only the Linksys router as a PPPoE initiator. But, I really need to monitor all the traffic that is passing through "Internet" interface. Developing a new firmware that will support SNMP could be the best solution that Linksys Company can provide.
Please help me with a solution.
    Best regards,
    Alexei Cornea

  • LinkSys WRT160Nv2 drops connectivity to individual computers on my home network

I have 2 MacBook Pros on my home WiFi network.  Periodically and individually, they will each lose connectivity to the network and the internet.  A workaround is to cycle the WiFi on the computer.  The wireless router is out of warrantee so don't have access to support.  Any ideas why that might be happening?
    Supporting Info:
Both MacBooks are running MacOS X 10.6.7 (latest)
I downloaded and installed the latest firmware version for the WRT160Nv2 (v2.0.03)
The MacBooks are within 10 feet of the WiFi device
To get better coverage in the house I installed and configured (according to both LinkSys and the other manufacturer) a WiFi repeater/extender (Engenius ERB9250 Wireless Range Extender)
Any help you can provide would be appreciated.
    DM

Go to the setup page, click on Wireless > Advanced Wireless Settings
Change Beacon Interval to 50, Fragmentation Threshold to 2307 and RTS Threshold to 2306.
Seems to work wonders for people having this type of problem.

  • My WRT160Nv2 settings? and airport express connection

    Hello:
I like to know what settings for WRT160Nv2 router would be the best for airport extreme on a macbook. Also there is a problem that may or may not be related to the router that I would like help on. The problem is this: when I click on my linksys router from the drop down menu with airport extreme I have to keep on clicking the signal button on the top right so that the speed won't drop to zero and the webpages and downloads don't hang or stop loading. This particular linksys router is the only one with this problem as the other linksys routers and any other brands I've connected to do not have this problem. The signal level is always full and never blinks or get disconnected unless of course forced to. I don't really know but it sort of seems like it is not waiting at all for this router when it is suppose to. Help is very much appreciated.

By airport extreme you mean to say Airport on your Mac computer ?
Connect the modem to the Internet port of your Linksys router also connect the computer with the Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port on your Linksys router .
Press and hold the reset button on Linksys router for 30 seconds .
Power cycle the modem and router .
Open the setup page of Linksys router using the IP Address 192.168.1.1 ( User name= Leave blank , Password- admin ) .
Configure the Linksys router as per your Internet Service Provider .

I don't have much time to discuss morals...
#1 the link doesn't work PaulW... or the site just happens to be having problems at this moment.
#2 this product has defective firmware. it can only effectively be used as a wireless access point. It was not my intention to purchase a wireless access point.
#3 This is V2 not V1, there is no firmware update for V2 yet.
#4 linksys came out with firmware fixes for wrt54gx so they can do it for the wrt160nV2
#5 its time to stop selling products with defective firmware
#6 its time for their Quality Assurance program/department/management to step up and demand a highler level of quality
    Customers deserve it.
    Thank you
