WRT1900AC - WPA2 on Guest Network and Setting Domain Name

I'm configuring a new WRT1900AC (version 1) and have a couple of questions.  The first should be easy, on the Connectivity -> Internet Settings page on the right side under the heading Optional the Domain Name (provided via the DHCP server, Comcast in this case) is displayed, but I cannot change it.  How do I set the Domain Name to reflect my local domain? The second question is a bit more daunting.  I have two main wifi segments (one each on 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz) that are each secured by WPA2.  They work great so far.  I also have two Guest wifi segments (one each on 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz), I cannot figure out how to secure these with WPA2.  You can set a passwword for each of the Guest wifi segments, and instruct users to open a web browser after connecting and enter this password, but that's not a secure connection.  Please tell me there is a way to secure the Guest network via WPA2, nobody wants to use an insecure internet connection in this day and age...... -MC

That's exactly why you want the connection encrypted, so EVERYTHING you send is encrypted and not sniffable.  The intended use of this Guest network is for renters at a condo resort, who will likely be doing banking and the like while on vacation.  If we only provide an open/unencrypted network for them they can't (or at least shouldn't) use it. I have a Netgear R7500 in place right now, it doesn't have any of these problems (e.g. you can specify the domain name even on with a dynamic WAN IP, and all 4 network segments are WPA2 encrypted).  Unfortunately, it's totally unreliable - the 4 network segments randomely disappear and stop working all the time, and the signal range is poor.  I "downgraded" to this 1900AC because this router has a better reputation for stability and range (and indeed, I've been testing it for several days now and stability and range seem to be its strong points, not a single problem so far), but these firmware decisions by Linksys are forcing me to reconsider this router.  -MC

  • Lost my guest network and VOIP is no longer....

    Hello peeps,
So, this is what I DID have going on (sorry for any incorrect terminogly, I'm not overly techi)..
Centurylink Lynx 220 modem, 3rd gen TC linked to that and from the TC I HAD my VOIP (voice over internet phone?) working just fine.  2 wireless networks, one as the household main and a guest network for......... well, guests lol..
I have been spending a massive amount of time on the phone with centurylink just of late, we pay for 8meg downloads butwhen doing speed tests we were lucky to get 1meg.  So, we got a new modem....
and this is what I have NOW....
Westell 7500 Modem, 3rd gen TC linked to that, bloody VOIP is NOT working, LOST my GUEST network and for love or money I can't add another one, that option seems to have completely gone AWOL.....
On the plus side, speed test now shows 7meg of download speed..
Any idea on what has changed?  other than the modem change??  could that of made that difference?  Any idea on how to get my life back??
We love the option of the guest network as we can turn it on and off for my Son.. Good boy = ON  Bad boy = OFF haa haaa haaa  how I love that power
Any info would be great.. Thank you

Guest network apparently.. (I haven't tested) does not work in bridge mode on the TC.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/12853944#12853944
As that is the case you must run the TC as a router. Update to latest firmware and latest utility if not already maybe a help.. or a hinderance if you are already there.. visa versa .. go backwards.. Apple don't get them right all the time.
Secondly the modem should be in bridge and using PPPoE client on the TC so it is a full router. This may solve the voip issue as well since your modem may not be setup correctly for voip.

  • Mac and personal domain names

How to set up your iWeb and personal domain names, How do you get your iWeb DNS. tHANKS

Mac/iWeb and domainnames have nothing to do with each other.
Your domainname is related to your webserver. With or without iWeb.
And there is no such thing as an iWeb DNS.
Check where you have your webhosting and domainname registered.
And in case the message did not get across, MobileMe ends at the end of this month. And so does Personal Domain, which is a MMe feature.

  • WLST setting domain name and ListenAddress attribute

    using weblogic 9.2
just getting started with WLST and ran into two issues:
    1) want to state the ListenAddress for both the adminserver and application servers with the script below:
    cd('Servers/AdminServer')
    set('Name', 'adminserver')
    set('ListenAddress', 'localhost')
    set('ListenPort', 7001)
    cd('/')
    create('appserver1', 'Server')
    cd('Server/appserver1')
    set('ListenAddress', 'localhost')
    set('ListenPort', 7003)
....however get the error "Property Listen address of Server appserver1 is invalid. The server has the same combination of listen address and (default) port as other server" which clearly isn't the case since the ports listed above are different.
    2) second issue is more of a complaint that the domain name is automatically derived from the domain directed in the writeDomain command. want to specify another domain name. is this possible?
    thanks / matthew

Ok update changing the hostname in the field does NOT allow me to edit the .local part. In fact it converts Steve.mydomain.net.local to Steve-mydomain-net.local.
But I got my windows workgroup changed and I am showing up with the correct workgroup name from my other servers.
Also, lets say you only have a couple of computers on your home network right? So dedicated dns is kind of overkill especially when most of them are laptops rebooting all the time.
Well, your mac os x box has a hosts file. /etc/hosts as in if you want to edit sudo vi /etc/hosts. So you keep the computers pretty much in sync from those files.
I was afraid the information would not be persistent across a reboot. It was.
So, two out of three ain't bad. I read in the server forum its a pain in the ***. I was almost thinking of doing the hostconfig trick but I saw an Apple bulletin saying do NOT do that.

  • HOW TO CONFIGURE GUEST NETWORK AND LIMITE BANDWIDTH

    Dear all,
Please help me how to configure internet access rule and limited the bandwidth for guest network via TMG Forefront 2010.
    Thanks you & best regards,
    Hung Viet

    Hi,
First you can create the new network set which is mapped to guest subnet, after that you can create access rule for this network set.
If you want to control bandwidth, you may need 3-party tool like this:http://www.bsplitter.com/

  • Guest network and multiple VLANs

    Hello all,
I have installed a pair of 5508 controllers in our network. One controller sits inside the network and APs are configured to associate with that controller. The second controller sits on a DMZ interface off the ASA. I have a guest network configured and it works great. I would like to configure additional guest networks at remote locations. Each guest WLAN will have it's own SSID. Is it possible to map all of these to the same VLAN? Or do I need a seperate VLAN and subnet for each SSID.
    Thanks

    Scott,
Thanks for the reply. I have created different SSIDs and mapped them to the same VLAN. Everything looks good but I'm getting some strange behaviors on the new SSIDs. It appears that users don't authenticate but I've verified the credentials quite a few times. I wanted to make sure that you could map multiple SSIDs to the same VLAN before I continued troubleshooting.

  • Guest Network and iTunes DJ

Is it possible for users connected to the guest network to use iTunes DJ for an iTunes library which is on a Mac connected to the main network?

The MAC address filtering is for the main wireless network and not for the guest network.
The guest network is different from your private wireless network.  This is very convenient especially if you always have guests in your home who would like to access the Internet.
When guests connect to the Guest network, they can connect to the Internet but will not have access to computers and devices which are connected to your Valet or Linksys Wireless-N Router.  The Guest network is a virtual network within your private network.
The Guest network operates on a different IP address range (192.168.33.x).  This allows your guests to connect to the Internet without becoming a part of your private network.
The guest will need the password to the network if they want to access the Internet.

  • Guest network and bridge mode

    Hi,
my question is, why my guest network doesn't works, if my TimeCapsule works  in the bridge mode?
    Someone an idea?
    Thanks
    Albrun

From the latest airport utility and firmware it does work.
I run the TC in bridge and setup the guest to try it.. seems to work for me.
I know there are other issues with using these .. perhaps that is what you mean.. but it does work.

  • E4200: guest networking and MAC filter

    Hi there,
I have my e4200 setup with guest networking enabled and also MAC filtering. Somehow i was epxecting MAC filtering not to be applied to guest wireless network but it appears to be so.
Can anybody please confirm if this is the case and if there's a workaround?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

You are correct.  MAC filtering is universal in the router. There is no workaround besides not using it.

I have a dual band airport extreme that I've purposfully kept at an old firmware revision because I have mac filtering enabled and also want to have guest network enabled. Somewhere around version 7.5 a bug was introduced that applied the mac filtering to both the private and guest SSID's. I found a number of posts from back then about it, but can anyone tell me if it has since been corrected in the more recent releases?

No.  For what it's worth, Apple Support does not call it a "bug". They call it a "feature".

  • Setting domain name

    Hi all,
Can I use my server to set up the internal domain name? I want to fix it to be something else than local and distribute it over the internal network.
    Thanks,
    Ziv
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

What you're needing is quite simple. I've boiled down the procedure into the following recipe. You may find my other posts useful: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=236181, http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=661415, and http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=1221660
    1. Go ahead and configure the DNS service on your server. Create a zone with a suffix like mycompany.private and give the nameserver a machine name, defining your server's fully-qualified name. Remember your nameserver is the server itself, so you should end up with a fully-qualified server name like myserver.mycompany.private.
With DNS configured, you've only defined a name that matches your server's IP address.
    2. Tell your server to use itself as a nameserver. In the Network pane of System Preferences, add the server's primary IP address to the top of its name server list, or make the change remotely with networksetup.
You'll also need to tell each of your clients to use the server as a nameserver for local DNS. You can manually add the server to the client's nameserver list in the Network pane of System preferences, or you can add it to your router's list of nameservers that it passes on to clients via DHCP.
On the server and one a test client, use lookupd -d to test local DNS resolution:
    a. Verify address to name resolution:
    lookupd -d then
    >hostWithInternetAddress: <server's IP> and press return
Look for the server's DNS name after name
    b. Verify name to address resolutioin:
    lookupd -d then
    >hostWithName: <server's DNS name> and press return
Look for the server's primary IP after ip_address
    3. Check the server's hostname. If you have UNIX experience, this may seem a bit strange, but Apple differentiates between what it calls a local host name and the hostname. With a fresh installation of Mac OS X Server, /etc/hostconfig contains the line HOSTNAME=-AUTOMATIC-, which means that the hostname is determined by the first item that's true in this list:
First try: The hostname is set to the DHCP client ID if the server's primary IP was configured in this way.
Second try: The hostname is set to the name returned by reverse lookup of the server's primary IP address, if you have an existing nameserver.
Third try: The hostname is set to the local host name, which is the mDNS (Bonjour) name. This is the name that ends with .local
Final try: The hostname is set to the string "localhost".
Since you're using your server as a DNS name server (config steps 1 & 2), neither the first or second try will return a hostname; and, since the mDNS process is always running, the hostname will be defined as the local host name provided by Bonjour. This explains why you're getting the same "dot local" name even after configuring DNS.
For this reason, you need to manually define the hostname.
First, edit the /etc/hostconfig file and replace HOSTNAME=-AUTOMATIC- with HOSTNAME=<qualified name from step 1>. For example, replace HOSTNAME=-AUTOMATIC- with HOSTNAME=myserver.company.private.
Next, issue sudo hostname <qualified name> to update the hostname cache. Now you're in business with a real hostname.
Note that you still have a local host name (mDNS/Bonjour name). That's still going to exist even though you have a fully-qualifed hostname defined by the server's DNS service and the hostconfig entry. The name you edit in the Overview section of Server Admin or the Sharing pane of System Preferences is, unfortunately, just that local host name; in short, there's no GUI to edit the hostname.
    5. Now you're ready to configure Kerberos and other services that depend on a "real" hostname provided by DNS. Please see my post: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=1221660
    Hope this helps.

  • 10gR2 install and computer domain name

    Hello,
In the 10gR2 install doc, there is a mention of "domain name" when creating an entry in the host file, thus:
Add a line to the C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file with the following format, after the localhost line:
    IP_address hostname.domainname hostname
    where:
IP_address is the non-routable IP address you entered in step 16.
hostname is the name of the computer.
domainname is the name of the domain.
    For example:
    10.10.10.10 mycomputer.mydomain.com mycomputer
What is the domain name of my PC? It is a Windows XP machine, not hooked to a network, but accesses the Internet on an ADSL connection.
    Thanks for your help!
    gk

    Actually. It doesn't matter.
You can use anything you like as hostname.domainname, even if you are connected or not connected to a LAN. If you are in a windows domain, you won't have chose, you have to use whatever they tell you to use.
If is you home PC, what you can do is to chose a pretty good name like woody.toystory.com and set the following:
    edit hosts file as:
    10.10.10.1 woody.toystory.com woody
And then rightclick on "My Computer" - Propierties - Computer Name TAB - Change Button ->
In the computer name write "woody"
The press button MORE and in the 'Primary DNS.....' write toystory.com. Ok and restart the PC
Then you can install the database

  • How to Setup RDS custom property when internal and external domain name space is different

    Hi All
I am setting up RDS for customer
My internal domain name is domain.local and my external domain is domain.com
I came across below PowerShell cmdlets on some blogs because my internal and external name space are different
Set-RDSessionCollectionConfiguration –CollectionName QuickSessionCollection -CustomRdpProperty “use redirection server name:i:1 `n alternate full address:s:remote.domain.com”
In above command, remote.domain.com points to which host?
Is it pointing to RD Session Broker
    OR
Pointing to RD Session Host servers
I am not sure what above command will do exactly ?
Any help will be highly appreciated
    Thanks Best Regards Mahesh

    Hi,
It all depends who is accessing the RDS Solution.
If you have a large BYOD or large number of external users, it would be better to use a public certificate.
Have a look at the following script which will simplyfy the configuration of the RDSH hosts with certificates.
    http://ryanmangansitblog.com/2014/05/20/rds-2012-rdsh-certificate-deployment-script/
You can use a custom RDP property to hide the Session host names.
Have a look at the following article on configuring certificates:

  • Using Mac Mini server, DNS, static IP, and external domain name

    Greetings!
I need to know the direction to take in order to use my domain name for the great features offered in the mac mini server, while having local and public access to my server with security.
I am trying to do the following on my new mac mini server:
    -Set up DNS (myserver.private)
I have a static IP I want to use for all this with my ISP
    -ftp access
    -ichat ([email protected])
    -email ([email protected])
    -ical etc. ([email protected])
-my work website(mydomain.com) with public access!
    -host websites(other domains)
I need to know the direction to take in order to use my domain name for these features. I have a domain name with godaddy, and I am happy with keeping it with them, however, how to I make my external domain name work on my private server with public access is the question?
    Thank you,
    Daniel G

[Read this|http://labs.hoffmanlabs.com/node/1436] as a start; you're basically going to decide if you want to use NAT or not; if you have enough public static IP addresses to avoid the disaster that's NAT. If you want to use NAT (and few reasonable folks want to, but sometimes we have to), then you get to run your own DNS services internally, and establish public DNS and power-forwarding at a (preferably server-grade) firewall. With NAT, you end up with split DNS, and that's covered in the cited document.
ps: it's easier to [use sftp|http://labs.hoffmanlabs.com/node/942]; while that shares three letters with ftp, it avoids most of the problems of ftp.
