WRT300n, printer usb connected to desktop, will wireless laptop print share?

I'm confused, and a borderline technophobe.
Just got my husband a laptop - everything connects fine to my WRT300N, the laptop and xbox 360.
My question is:
Do I have to buy something else for him to be able to use the printer attached to my desktop PC? I had assumed if I turned on "printer sharing" it would operate. But no luck.
I see references to a wireless printer something or other - is this what I need?
Please advise.
Thank you.

It depends on what you want to do.
The two options are:
1.  Share the printer (via your network) that is attached to the desktop.  This is done through "file and print sharing" on your home network.  This is assuming you HAVE a home network.  Just using the wired or wireless connection to the router in order to access the modem (and the internet) is NOT the same thing.  The network has to be set up.  Once this is done, you can simply share the printer and the laptop, being on the same network, will see it and be able to print to it.  You can also share drives.
2.  The other option is the have the printer be a network resource.  This means that the printer is not part of your desktop but it accessed from the network from either computer.  You need a wired or wireless print server to make that happen.  The advantage is that the printer is always there for the laptop even if the desktop is turned off.  If you are the type to leave your desktop always on, this is not much of an advantage.  The other thing that is nice is if you have one of those multi function printers with a scanner/copier.  Nothing but the print function can be used by the laptop if you use option number 1 above, but, if you buy a print server that supports it (the WPSM54G for example) then all of the functions are available for all the computers.
The downside of both options is that neither is for the neophyte.  There are, no doubt, a billion hits on google for setting up a home network and sharing a printer over it.  You should have no trouble finding step by step instructions.
On the other hand, the information for the print server is a little more sparse.  Even from Linksys.

My Canon MX 922 does not scan. My printer is connected via cable. Wireless doesn't work either.  I get an error message with multiple suggestions but none of them apply to my situation.
I am so dissatisfied with this printer.  I'm sorry I got it from Amazon because now it is a hassle to return it.  I will never buy another Canon.
The printer menus are confusing.  I hate using it.  I loved my previous Canon which finally stopped working after many years, that's why I purchased a newer Canon model.  Never again.  Stick with cameras.

This note won't be as angry and frustrated as the last one...
Because I still had my old printer drivers and other applications on my hard drive, I think the application was trying to connect with the old printer.  I deleted all the old stuff.
I also had several scanning applications on my drive which just confused me.
When I used the actual Canon MX922 application, I was able to scan but could only save as JPG, TIF or BMP (and one more, I forget which).  So I did some research on the Canon site and found out how to save documents as PDF files using the Canon IJ Scan Utility.
It works now.  So I'm satisfied, will keep this maching.  I just had to take some time, sit down and focus on the problem.

  • Printer Not Connected error with HP Wireless Printer

    Hi everyone,
Just bought an iMac, first time ever using OSX and trying to add my new HP 2540 wireless printer. I've spent 4 hours on this so far and now looking for help!
I've followed every instruction to the letter - the wireless connection with the printer is fine as I printed off a report, it will print connected via a cable and it recognises my printer in applications and I have done the set up via disc about 20 times uninstallig each time and starting from scratch again. I've downloaded the latest driver from HP.  All I get is a 'printer is not connected/printing looking for printer' endless bar when I click 'print'. It seems to be an issue of it not recogising it over the wireless connection despite it being connected to my router.
What am I doing wrong? How do I fix this?
    Many Thanks!

Connecting a printer is pretty simple if you follow Apple's process, ignore HP's guides!!
You can find Apple's instructions by clicking Mac Basics: Printing in OS X
In the event you still have trouble give AppleCare a phone call, you have 90 days of free telephone support and Apple can help resolve most issues. If you don't know the phone number in your area please click Contact Apple for support and service to locate it.
Good luck and welcome to the light side.

  • IMac can't find my printer (usb connected, Canon MP600R)

    Hi all,
I am trying to connect my MP600R with a usb connection to my iMac. The problem is that my iMac isn't showing any printer! I am sure that the cable is fine. I can connect it to my time capsule but I don't want that, because I want to scan with it too and the time capsule is on the 1st floor. So please, could anyone help me. I tried to get the newest software from the Canon site, but nothing works!
    Thanks a lot!

With the printer connected to your iMac, select Apple > Software Update... from the menu bar.
If the latest Canon Printer Driver Update does not automatically show up in the Software Updater, disconnect the printer, restart the iMac, reconnect the printer and try updating again.
If it is still not updating or working, you should try a different USB port on the iMac, another printer cable and/or test the printer connected a different computer to make sure that it is working.
Lastly here is the latest > Canon Printer Drivers v2.6 for Mac OS X v10.6 that you can install manually on your system if you like.

did you change the router settings from your wireless laptop ?? its always recommended to change the router settings from the wired computer ...
    also , on the router web interface , try changing the wireless channel - either 1 or 11 , beacon interval - 50 , Fragmentation threshold - 2306 , RTS threshold - 2307

  • HP LASERJET P110w won't connect to my new wireless laptop

Hi, I have my printer hooked up to my desktop hp via usb cable. I recently got a new Lenovo laptop and want to hook up the printer using wireless connection peer to peer. I downloaded the printer driver to my laptop but when I try to print it says "Printer in error state". I am using windows 8.1 os. Do I need to unplug the printer and reinstall or can the printer be connected by wireless and usb to 2 different computers?
    Thank you for helping,
    Chip

    Hello chiparoo,
I see that you're trying to connect your Laserjet P1102w to your new Windows 8.1 laptop. I will try to help you with this.
To start by answering your question: you should be able to have the printer connected USB to one computer and wireless to another and have everything working fine.
When you get the message "printer in error state", is that while trying to install on 8.1 or is that when trying to print from your desktop?
This document: Installing the Printer on a Wireless Network, may help you with the wireless setup and installation of the printer. It should help guide you through the steps required to complete this task, and have the printer up and running on your wireless network.
I hope that's able to help you out and get everything running correctly. Please let me know if you need further assistance.
Thank you for posting on the HP Forums.

    Hi MartinR
Thank you for your reply, i have tried what you suggest, and it did not work, the i DVD opening title changed but not the embedded movie.
Perhaps it is a setting in Final Cut Express?
After capturing my footage, i open a new project then i convert all clips to anamorphic, to give me the letterbox effect, i have tried now with and without anamorphic.
In my canvas screen, the footage does not fill the square, even if i have not selected anamorphic, and fall well within the TV safe areas, but the only way to ill the canvas up is to crop it bigger, but still when i export it does not give me the full screen view.
    Any ideas?

  • Printer shows connected to internet. eprint websit shows printer ready but can't print email

    HP 5510 Photosmart

Unable to print email from my laptop when sent remotely.  Printer indicates ready, eprint website indicates printer is ready.  I get
    delivery failure notices.

Make certain that there is only one recepiant in the 'To' and 'CC' field.
For those who are experiencing ongoing issues with their web services, you can attempt to try the following steps that may
    help resolve your problems.
1.) Completely shut down your printer and restart it
2.) If you have prints that have not printed, log into ePrint Center (or create an account if you do not have one) and
then look for your printer status. If printer status is green but you still have pending jobs, delete the pending jobs one at
a time (Starting with the oldest first). There may be a print job stuck in the queue that further restricts other jobs from
    completing.
    a. If option 1 or 2 above still doesn’t work, removing web services and re-adding web services will cause the printer to
    reattach to the cloud.
    b. Please note that if you attempt option 3, you will get a new eprint email address (and lose your custom one with no
ability to get it back) furthermore, you will need to re-add your printer back to your ePC account.

  • Can a HP B210 AIO printer be connected to 2 different wireless networks at the same time?

I live in a household that has 2 different wireless networks in it (both me and my roommate have our own networks) and we just bought a new B210 series AIO printer.  The printer detects both of our networks but only will print from one network at a time. If I want to print from my network I have to manually go to the wireless network wizard on the printer and select my network and re-enter my password. Is there any way that I can set up the printer to acknowledge both networks without having to constantly switch back and forth?
