WRT310N Slow wireless on Vista Laptop

Hello, I have a WRT310N.  Over wired connections I get great speeds (23000kb/s download, 2600kb/s upload).  Wireless is another story - On a Vista laptop I am getting 575kb/s download, 2600kb/s upload.  Under network status I am showing an exellent connection and often at 270.0Mbps.  What could be going on?
Solved!
Go to Solution.

Solved - Windows Update screwed me over.  I deleted the most "up to date" NIC driver which had been downloaded automatically by Windows.  I then installed the suggested driver from the HP site and ran TCP Optimizer.  Everything is running smoothly again.

  • C5280 no longer prints wirelessly from Vista laptop after purchase of new Win7 PC wired to C5280

My Windows XP desktop was wired directly to the C5280 and I was able to print through my home network from the Win Vista laptop downstairs. Since I purchased a Win7 PC and replaced the Win XP one, the laptop cannot print wirelessly through the home network. What can I do to regain that functionality? Thanks.

OK, first wireless Gateway (modem/router combo) units are terrible for wireless connection. It is always, always best to use a separate modem and router in your network that YOU have control over instead of Comcast. If you have your old router it would be best to call Comcast and have that Gateway put in Bridge mode (disables the router section) and connect your own high quality router. With that said, let's try this. Set the router to a fixed wireless channel like 1, 6 or 11, never 'auto'. If you still can't connect, remove all security off the routers SSID. Now try to connect to your SSID with no security. Are you successful?

  • Print Wirelessly from Vista Laptop

I had wireless printing working from my old XP laptop, but I can't get it to work with my new one running Vista. Airport Extreme connected to my imac. File Sharing and Print Sharing are turned on in preferences. I can see the printer from my laptop, but when I select print it says access was denied...unable to connect. In Vista in the control panel the printer shows up with a check mark and a green symbol on the network link. Any guidance greatly appreciated.

Printer sharing is also turned on in Visa Control Panel

  • IPad2 has slower wireless connection than laptop (netgear router)

I have done numerous speed tests that show my laptop at 5meg and ipad2 always below 1meg. All the similar posts i have read suggest turning off qos on the router but mine doesnt even have that option. Its a netgear 150 and brand new. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated as this is driving me mad!! Thanks

Have you powered off everything and power up again?  Power off printer and router.  Power on router and wait 2 mins.  Power up printer and see if it connects to your SSID.

  • Windows Vista = very slow wireless network

I have a brand new Lenovo ThinkPad Z61p. A great machine, great performance. But Vista seems to get in its way.
The first thing I did, was to re-install Windows Vista to get a clean machine, without alle the junk that comes with it. At work, the wireless network worked just fine - but when I came home, it was so slow. I mean REALLY slow. If I turned the wireless network card off, and plugged in a cable, I was flying on the Internet. But for the wireless adapter, even a page like msdn.microsoft.com could take 3-4 minutes just to load.
I thought the issue was the drivers for the wireless network adapter, but later, in my desperate attempt to solve the problem, I removed a Windows feature called Windows DFS Replication service, which solved my problem.
This was 4 weeks ago - and now the problem has returned. I've been reading a lot of forum posts around the web. I've uninstalled some other features, disabled IPv6, disabled Vista Auto-tuning ( i did that 4 weeks ago as well)...
Nothing is working. I've also changed the default Network authentication mode, I've updated the drivers for the Intel Pro Wireless 3945abg, changed the wireless mode and a lot of things. Nothing is working.
Does anyone in here have the same issues, or does anyone know what is wrong?

I picked up a new IBM ThinkPad T60P (Wide) running Vista Business, and I am experiencing the same problems with an extremely slow wireless connection. I get the same slow performance on the wireless network in my office as in my home.
The second I disable the wireless and plug in the cable directly to the router (ZyXeL) everything runs perfectly. I also tested connecting an Apple AirPort to the router (via cable) and connected directly to the AirPort as an access point instead of connecting to my normal wireless network, and then everything was working just fine for some reason (almost as fast as when I connect directly to the router via cable)!
The really weird thing is that I get really quick download rates on at least one website (www.dailyrush.dk) where I can download files at 1.1 MB/s (I should have 15 mbit downstream). The web pages of that website still load pretty slow though when I'm browsing. Most other websites that I have tested load insanely slowly, both when I'm just browsing the pages and when I'm downloading files. For example a 1024 x 695 pixel JPG on Flickr.com might take several minutes to load, or simply time out. The Google front page sometimes takes 15 seconds to load.
I have my old laptop parked right besides the new one, both connected to the same router on wireless, and the old laptop (IBM ThinkPad T41 running XP) performs fine - downloading anywhere from 10 to 100 times faster!
It also takes forever to connect to VPN, perhaps 15 or 20 seconds on the Vista laptop and no more than 2 seconds on the XP machine.
When I ping www.google.com in a command prompt I get some packet loss (between 25 and 100 %) but reasonable ping times averaging about 45ms which is the same as on my old laptop.
I have tried pretty much everything:
    Disabling Windows Firewall
Disabling TCP/IP v6 and those other entries in the wireless adapter configuration that are new in Vista
Disabling security on the router entirely
Changing security on the router to WPA and WPA2
Changing the channel on the router (tried several available channels)
Switching between 802.11 a/b/g modes on the router
Booting up in safe mode (heard that worked for someone with a similar problem)
Updating the wireless adapter driver to the newest version
Installing all available updates from Windows Update
Moving my laptop really close to the router (duh)
    Uninstalling MacAfee
    Uninstalling Bullguard
Uninstalling a bunch of pre-installed IBM stuff
I have come across several threads online where people have had the exact same problem and solved it by uninstalling the pre-installed MacAfee software. My laptop came with MacAfee too but I uninstalled it right away and installed Bullguard instead. When I noticed the connection problems I uninstalled Bullguard too, but little did it help.
I really hope that someone can help me out here ... I'm kind of running out of ideas :-( Thanks in advance.
    Cheers,
    Stefan

  • Wireless connection not visible on Vista laptop using Time capsule

Change setup with Time capsule 1 TB, all MAC PC's work perfectly with wireless connection, except Vista laptop.
Vista discovers all other wireless connections except the one from Time capsule.
On advise from forum, changed Airport settings :
    - Radio mode = 802/a - 802/g"
    - Wireless security to "none"
Which other setting on Vista prevents at least discovering the wireless signal ?
    Thanks for your support !

I believe the problem has to do with some potential compatibility issue between the SP3 update and the currently installed Boot Camp drivers. Did you make sure that you (re)installed the latest Boot Camp drivers after you performed the SP3 update?

  • HP Photosmart c309 and printing from Vista laptop on wired/wireless network

Ok going to be as thorough at possible here.
Its a brand new HP Photosmart c309 which I received this past Weds, so far so good both my Wife and I are enjoying it. Now I have it wired into my home network which consists of a Linksys switch in our home office and Netgear wireless router in the basement. The Linksys switch is wired to the router in the basement for internet/network connection...I have my Dell workstation running Windows XP SP3 (with all the latest patches from Microsoft, Mcafee AV) and the photosmart printer wired to the switch. I installed the HP software and drivers from the disk on the XP workstation and all is well...prints, scans and I'm able to view the printer settings, ink levels and what not.
NOW my Wife's Dell Vista laptop (which is patched to the latest from Microsoft, Mcafee AV) is getting really annoying. First I hate Vista but that’s another story...the Vista laptop connects to our home network via the wireless network through the Netgear router. So I followed the same steps as my XP workstation, it finds the printer during setup and all is well till the part when it wants to send a test page...so I opt to skip the photo test page and just do a standard one. Well it "sends" a test page or at least it looks like it does but nothing comes out of the printer (ie no activity from printer). The printer icon shows up in the system tray in the lower right hand corner of the screen near the time and when I put the mouse pointer over the icon is says "0 in queue" so I double click the icon to see if I can get more info and nothing happens. Right click the icon and choose open all active printers and again nothing. The printer icon is in the system tray for about 10-15 seconds and then disappears.
So I'm a little confused here, I check the printer in "printers & faxes" and both it and the fax part are listed...the printer even says it’s in "ready" status. I start the HP solution software on the laptop and I am able to scan from the printer to the Vista laptop fine, I'm able to view printer settings, network settings, ink levels and what not. I JUST CAN'T printer to it.
I tried another test page from the printer properties within Windows, again the icon shows up in the system tray and it says "0 in queue" and the icon disappears after 10-15 seconds. I then try to print a picture using the HP software and the same thing...icon shows up in system tray "0 in queue" and it disappears.
Did I do something wrong or am I missing a special step for Vista machines? I did uninstall and reinstall software/drivers and manually removed the printer and then reinstalled everything with no luck and no change...still acts the same.
I'm lost at what else to try. I think I tried the obvious stuff. I've searched the web to come up blank with a similar situation like mine...I've seen others complain about printing 1 page documents and the printer prints 3,6,16 pages at a time which is the opposite from my situation.
Any input/advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,
    Bruno

  • No Problem hooking up Vista laptop with WRT110 Wireless Router but can not get XP laptop to see it

I purchased a WRT110 Linksys wireless router this afternoon and had no problem configuring it for my wired desktp and my wireless Vista laptop, but my Acer XP wireless laptop will not even see the network.  I have tried WEP, WAP, and no security, but I can see the neighbors routers but I can not see mine.  My XP laptop is an Acer 3680-2574 with a  Broadcom 802.11g network adapter.

Is the SSID enabled on the router ?
What is the firmware on the router ?

  • Limited access message on Vista laptop

I have a linksys wireless g 2.4 router. I recently setup WEP security on this router.
When our Vista laptop connects to our network, it shows a "Limited Access" message below the SSID name. What does the limited access message mean?
Also, we noticed that around 8pm-11pm every night, our wireless speed slows down drastically. Every website we go to takes a few minutes to display. This happens on all of our PCs connecting wirelessly. Any ideas what to look for on my router that may cause this?
    Thanks,
    Jerry

Whats the Model number of your Router ?
If you are getting "Limited Access" on your Vista computer, these indicates that your computer is not connected to the Internet and its having only Limited access. So in these case you can change the security Mode on your Router to WPA Personal and then try to connect to your wireless network.
If you are facing intermittent connection problem on your wireless computer, then i think you need to change some settings on your router. Follow the settings bellow.
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...Leave Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
Set the Wireless channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on Save Settings...
    Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
Change the Beacon Interval to 75 >>Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 >>Click on "Save Settings"...
Now on your vista computer... Click on the Start button >>> Control Panel >>> Network and Sharing Center >>>Under tak you need to click on "Manage Wireless Network" and Remove all the Preferred Networks from the List and close the window.
Now try to re-connect to your wireless network using the WPA security key.

  • Very slow printing from vista PC to PSC1355 on XP PC

My wife has a Vista laptop which connects wirelessly to my home network.
There is a PSC 1355 connected to my PC which runs XP.
The printer is shared and can be seen from the vista machine but when trying to print from the vista machine it is extremely slow in printing and viewing the printer`s settings. Also if the shared printer is setup as the default printer then the vista machine is very slow opening any MS office document.
I`ve searched all over the place for quite a while to try to resolve this problem to no avail. The printer can`t be setup on the vista machine because of it`s location.
    Any ideas?

  • E4200 Slow Wireless download and Network File Sharing

When I first got the E4200 up and running I was able to transfer files from my wireless laptop to a wired laptop at speeds of over 2 MBps(distance was over 40 ft).  Now I have both laptops running wireless and a desktop that is wired via ethernet to the 4200 router and network file sharing runs much slower.  Right now network transfer speeds are around 500-550 kBps.
Wireless network speeds are being affected also.  Wi-fi d/l speeds via Cisco speed test is usually 5-6x slower than my wired speed tests, with upload speeds being faster than the d/l speed(Laptop is only 2 feet away from router for testing).  And sometimes the wireless d/l speeds will slow down all the way to .15 mbps.
Has anyone come across this problem and found a fix for it, or have some suggestions?  The router settings are mostly default and I have reset it to factory defaults via web interface and tried power cycling.  But nothing so far has worked.  I would hate to have to return this router and go back to the wrt54g.

Ok, well I tried all these and changing the MTU down to 1365 made it run real slow, so I found out the optimal mtu and switched between auto and manual 1500, and auto gave me more consistent speeds.  It does seem to be running a bit faster with the name change of the 5 ghz band, and changing the channel of the 2.4 ghz band(Name changing 2.4 band did not make any noticable differences).
Right now I am getting download speeds around 10 mbps on the vista laptop(wireless), while the windows 7 desktop(wired) and laptop(wireless) are usually around 5.3-6 mbps.  File sharing between the windows 7 machines are 4.3 MBps and 2.9 MBps between vista laptop and W7 desktop.  Upload speeds on all machines are around 7mbps.
I am happier with the more consistent speeds between all machines instead of really fast between just 2, but am confused to why the vista laptop is running faster and my upload speed is faster than the download speeds on 2 of my machines.

  • New FIOS router, VIsta Laptop Cannot Access Internet

I too have the new FIOS router with 75/35 speed.  I have just been trying to install the router and have been successful in getting wifi connected on two devices (Win 7 laptop and Kindle), but I cannot get my Vista laptop to access the internet.  It shows the wifi being connected but no internet connection.
Does this have something to do with the Vista OS?
Thank you in advance for your help.

Anyone at Verizon who is paying attention would realize this problems is many years old with no solution.  People are literally begging for help in dozens of online forums, to no avail (Google search usually provides me results faster than any tech support).  I have the exact same issue.  All my wireless devices connect to the internet through the Verizon MI424WR router with no problem.  My Vista laptop connects just fine via Ethernet cable, but not the wireless.  I can make a wireless connection to the router, and the router admin page shows it is, in fact, connected, but absolutely NO connection to internet is possible.
BTW, the laptop had no problem for years connecting to the internet via a Linksys WRT54G connected to Verizon DSL.
All that the troubleshooting "guide" provides is the usual basic "plug in, turn off, turn on, reset" nonsense that might help only those who can't stop their VCR clock from blinking.
So please, Verizon, bump this up to a FAQ (because it is VERY frequently asked), and help us find a solution.

  • I cannot get my Vista laptop to print to the printer on the base station

I cannot get my laptop windows pc to wirelessly print to the printer on the base station. the mac have no problem with it. but not the pc vista laptop or xp running on boot camp on my imac Leopard.

Next try deleting the system and reinstall the printer..

  • Has anybody solved the slow wireless connections speeds of the new Imacs

I have just purchased the new imac...and was made aware of the disastrous connections speeds using wireless.. Does anybody know if apple have come up with a solution...or are they just not dealing with the problem?

I am a brand new Mac user with a new 24 inch iMac purchase. Macs are supposed to be hassle free right? Right. No question I was about ready to throw it out the window because the wireless connection to the expensive AP base station was, oh, 100x slower than my Dell laptop side by side about 1 foot away. Nothing changed even if I connected directly to the AP using an ethernet cable. My connection consists of an Actiontec DSL gateway connected directly to my AP extreme that allows wireless to my PC laptop as well as my new iMac. Hours and hours go by until I find this help link on Mac Orchard Forums:

+WOW!! everyone else with this problem read this! i was having these same huge speed problems using the internet with my new 24" dual core intel imac with 2 gigs of ram and found a posting on another site's thread that fixed it completely.+
+"Try setting your DNS servers to OpenDNS (208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220) and see if that helps at all. Maybe the ISP's changes increased the load on their DNS servers."+
+my guess is that somehow these DNS servers work the way tiger likes them to while others dont, i have no clue other than to say it works!!+
+heres a site i found that helped me understand how to change the settings:+
    +http://portforward.com/networking/static-Mac10.4.htm "+
With the new Leopard installed I went to the "portforward" link first and followed the instructions exactly to set a static IP address, then I reset my DNS servers with the exact numbers you see above - IT WORKED IMMEDIATELY!!!!! I didn't have to call my ISP or anything, it just worked exactly as it should with both Safari and Firefox. Now this Mac is flying and I will not be tossing it back to Jobs.
    Good Luck!
