WRT310N - Wireless WEP Security

Has anyone had problems setting up WEP security on the WRT310N router?  When I configure the router to use WEP, then I cannot get any of my wireless devices to connect to it.  If I disable security everything works fine.  However; I don't feel very comfortable without security enabled.
Any ideas on what I need to do to correct?

I made the keys very simple for testing...that wasn't the problem.
I was just about to give up and return the router to the store...when I decided to try to a couple of hard resets on router.   After resetting the router...
I finally figured out, that if I put the network mode on 'Mixed' (because I have wireless B,G, and N on my network) and set the standard channel on '11' regardless of whether the Radio band was set to 'Wide' or 'Standard', then I was finally able to get my wireless devices to connect.   This time around, if I tried to put the standard channel on 3 or 6, then my wireless computer would give me an error message saying my wireless network was not in range.   It seems Standard channel 11 is the one that works best for me.
The only outstanding issue I have is that my Wireless-N devices do not seem to be any faster than Wireless-G.  They are receiving around 54 Mbs, same as G.

  • C4580 Wireless Networking Issue - WEP Security Key not accepted.

I keep getting this error whe doing network setup on my new Photosmart C4580.
"Your wireless rounter requires a WEP secuirty key. The security key configured on your printer does not match exactly. Reconfigure your wireless network WEP security key for your printer."
I have downloaded an updated installer. I have tried to access the printer via the IP address to make the change. It is never updated. When I run the Wireless Network Test Report it also shows it fails. I am entering in the first WEP security key (Index 1). I know the key is being entered correctly. I have even copied and pasted it. Nothing works.
    Help Please!

    Jim:
Thanks for your comments. I think you may be right. I have more information now. I installed a later version of the C4500 package (to fix another problem where the PC Firewall and internet access was disabled for 3 mins at startup), and the network setup/diagnostics are different in the newer package. After installing this the first time, everything worked - I mean everything, even scan from printer. During the Network Setup the wizard found only one network (mine). However, the Wireless Network Report said it had detected two.
However, the next time I switched the printer on, it never connected. Network diagnostics then told me that the PC and the printer were on different networks, 192.168.0.0 and 169.254.0.0 and that this usually results from two close networks with the default router manufactures SSID. This is not the case here - I am in any case in a very isolated country farm!  It also (predictably) said the WEP was wrong. At one point in the diagnostic I can see it's trying 169.254.196.213.  There's nothing on my network other than 192.168.0.*  Attempts to reconfigure the network again show that there is only one network detected on-air, and no duplicate SSIDs, but the same result in the diagnostic - crossed-networks. Even re-installing the software won't fix it now. Whereas before I could at least print/scan from the PC and only the printer 'thought' the network was dead, now the network really IS dead and I am left with a USB-only setup.
I think you may be right that the printer somehow 'remembers' a phantom/ghost network. What I need is some way to hard-reset the printer. I saw in other postings that you know something about this, at least on other printers. Alternatively, I need a way to set the printer network parameters, including hard-coded IP address, over the USB but WITHOUT the router radio on, then switch it on and let the HP network setup wizard find it over the radio. Any ideas on that one please?

  • WEP Wireless Incompatable Security

I upgraded to Leopard the day after it came out, and with a few exceptions has "just worked", like Tiger.
In my apartment I have a Netgear wireless router with WEP Security and SSID Broadcasting off. There are several PCs and other devices (Game consoles) that connect to this router.
I have not changed any setting on my router in months; and after I returned from Thanksgiving break (where I brought my laptop and connected to a linksys router with no password security), I was unable to connect to my netgear. I am the only person in my room that knows the password to the router, and all of the PCs (and presumably consoles, though I honestly haven't bothered to check since the PCs work).
So I've concluded that its something with my laptop, but I can't seem to figure out why it would suddenly stop working. I haven't installed any new software, nor have I done any system updates (I am up to date).
Adding my network to the preferred network lists does nothing. Trying to connect directly give me the error "incompatible security". Occasionally I get a "connection timeout", even when I don't change anything.
    Console Messages:
11/26/07 7:39:20 AM SystemUIServer[ 131 ] Error joining XXXXXXXX: Connection timeout (-6 timeout connecting)
11/26/07 7:39:29 AM SystemUIServer[ 131 ] Error joining XXXXXXXX: Incompatible security (-13 Challenge failure)
I was able to connect last night by randomly changing settings and trying to connect. (From what I can remember, all I did was try connecting with no password, then changed to WEP and manually entered it, with "remember network" unchecked). But putting my laptop to sleep seemed to kill whatever I changed and I can't connect again. I didn't get to try much since then, but hoping that I can get some suggestions to solve this problem before I call Apple.

I was having a similar (I think) problem connecting to my school's wireless network (it is WEP rather than WPA, I guess for legacy compatibility). I came to school and would connect for a few seconds, then disconnecting. I went into the airport settings and saw that the saved setting for the connection had switched to no password. I changed it back to WEP and entered my password, then closed out, turned airport off and on again. Didn't work. I went back, and the setting had gone back to no password. I then deleted the saved network setting and created a new one with the proper security and password. This new entry saved properly and now I am connecting with no problem.
So my suggestion would be to delete the entry for your home network (System Preferences->Network->Airport->Advanced) and create a new entry with that info. It is worth a shot.

  • 10.4.7 wireless connect problem with wep security

I can no longer connect either my powerbook or powermac to either of my wireless access points if wep security is used. One router runs wpa, the other has to run wep because that's all the print server can do. To pin this down, I found that both computers can connect to an access point configured wpa. And both can connect if security disabled. But neither can connect with access point setup with wep. System preferences says connected to the internet, but it's not. Before 10.4.7 I could connect with no problems. Have two PCs running XP that continue to access wireless router using wep security. Anybody having this problem? And any suggestions??
    Thanks

Assuming you have 3rd party wireless routers, have you checked the router manufacturer's website to see if a firmware update is available for the router models targeted at OS X users?
I'm using WPA2 personal with my AEBS at Home and my girlfriend uses WEP with her AEBS at her house and I've had no problems connecting to her wireless network and accessing the internet with 10.4.7.
She also uses WEP with a 3rd party wireless router at her condo on the coast and I've had no problems connecting there either.

  • Can no longer use WEP security on my G3 clamshell

This morning I updated OS 10.3.9 with the security update that was just released and now I have to disable my WEP security. What happened? My G5 still works fine with my Airport Extreme base station
    G3 ibook   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Still hoping for some help. After updating Panther with the 2006 02 security update, I can no longer connect to my wireless network with WEP security activated. Internet Connect finds the network, and Airport is turned on, but it just spins and I have to do a force quit. I have the network and the base station passwords in my keychain, so it doesn't ask for them. My G5 hooks in fine. As soon as I turn off WEP security, resetting the base station from my G5, the G3 ibook connects automatically. I went to a lot of expense to upgrade this old iBook (Panther, airport card, new battery, upped the ram to 320 megs) and Apple suppposedly still supports it with Panther. I really don't want to be providing internet access for the whole neighborhood.

  • How do you know your wireless is secure?

I want to know how you know your internet is secure so no one in your neighbor hood can steal or hack my internet service. A few people in our house use a mix between ethernet cable and wireless. I don't use the wireless so i don't know how you set it up on the computer but when you use wireless for the first time to you have to enter a user name and password to access? I just want to make sure its secure. Thank you

Prevent someone from hacking your network.. simple, dont use wireless at all and turn the wireless on the router off. Thats the only option to prevent hacking. All other security settings like WEP, WPA, WPA2 will only slow a hacker down. They will not stop them.
Now if you want wireless, then your only option is to use encryption. Again this will only slow hackers down. But the chances you have a hacker next door is rather remote. Now by default the Verizon router uses WEP security. This is just the basics. Keeps honest people honest. Now if you want to increase your security, you can change the router security to WPA2. Dont worry about WPA as this is basically the same as WEP in terms of security effectiveness. WPA2 is more secure than the other two. This will keep you safe from the novices. Then as long as you dont have an advanced computer user nearby you should be fairly safe.

Hi, I just set up a DPC3825 router, and I wanted to use WEP security settings so my DS Lite can connect to the internet, but it appear the only options in the Wireless > Wireless Security dropdown list are :
    WPA-Personal
    WPA2-Personal
    WPA or WPA2-Personal
    Disable.
    Anyone know what's going on?

  • Using AX with Linsys router and WEP security

I have a Dell Inspiron 700m running XP. I use a Linksys wireless router for internet access. I have configured my AX to connect to the router and, with the WEP security turned off, it worked fine. However, when I turned WEP back on, reset the AX, and tried to configure it as a client to my wireless network, it didn't work. Rather, I could not connect to my wireless network, and can only connect directly to the AX network. Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Tom
    Dell Inspiron 700m   Windows XP

One of the problems with WEP is that the actual standard relies on a 10 character HEX key for 40bit WEP and a 26 character HEX key for 128bit WEP.
In order to make things easier for people, vendors use certain algorithms to convert simple alphanumeric passwords (or passphrases) into HEX keys, thus enabling people to use simple memorable WEP password rather than lengthy HEX keys.
The problem is that different vendors use different algorithms to generate the HEX key and therefore a ASCII password on an AEBS will be hashed differently on a Netgear client and vice versa.
One thing is a 13 character 128 bit WEP password will be hashed by all vendors in the same way (if you use 40bit WEP then a 5 character password is required).
Having said that, this will only work if they use an algorithm, some don't and in these cases you must use the HEX key regardless of the length of the plain text password.

  • Can't set WEP security, why?

I have a Belkin 54mb Airport Card (seen in Profiler as Airport Extreme) in my Mac running OSX 10.4.8. The card works fine with my Netgear DG834G modem/router but I can't set the security option.
I set the password in the 'Wireless Settings' page re-start after but when I key in the password Airport can't find the network. I then have to reset the modem to factory settings.
Anyone out there using this modem/router who can offer any help?
    G4 466 DA   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   www.ardswe.com

Thanks to those helped, thanks. The problem was this:
When setting up WEP security with this modem, you use the standard 10 digit 'Hex' password, ex 1234567890 but when you assign this password to the Network and Airport on your mac you must prefix it with a dolar sign, (so the pasword becomes $1234567890), apparently the dollar sign forces the Netwotk Prefs and Airport to read the numbers as 'Hex' code, as opposed to just numbers.
Hope this may help others who have this problem.

  • Mimo access points with Static WEP security do not allow connection speeds above 54mbps

    I am getting this message:
Access Connections - Mimo access points with Static WEP security do not allow connection speeds above 54mbps
If I switch from WEP to WAP i do not get the message but I still only get 54mbps speed.  I have a Linksys Wireless-N Broadband Router.  Is there a setting that I am missing???

Yes you need to use WPA-AES or WPA2-AES, or no encryption, to go faster than 54Mbps. This is part of the 802.11n spec.
That's not so bad, because if you have the right 802.11n card and use the right settings you can go up to 300Mbps!
What bites is that the 802.11n card which comes with X-Series ThinkPads is the Intel 4965AGN. It does not support the broader 802.11n 40MHz channel width option, limiting the top speed to 130Mbps .
The new ThinkPads based on the Montevina/Centrino 2 platform will most likely use the Intel WiFi Link 5100/5300 802.11n/WiMax cards, which I hope will fix this, coz I'm going to buy one!

  • WRT54GS2 V1 Will not accept WEP security

I jsut purchased a WRT54GS2 V.1 router and it will not let me set teh wireless mode to WEP secured. If i select it it immediately resets it to Disabled, no matter if im in auto amtic or manual modes. Working as intended or did i waste my money?

It might be the problem with the firmware of the Router....so try upgrading the firmware of your Router...
Go to website linksysbycisco.com/downloads.........insert model no of your router in serach tab......select proper version of your router........download the firmware file......save that file on desktop
Follow these steps to upgrade the firmware on the device : -
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on a computer hard wired to the router...
In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1...Leave the Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
Click on the 'Administration' tab- Then click on the 'Firmware Upgrade' sub tab- Here click on 'Browse' and browse the .bin firmware file and click on "Upgrade"...
Wait for few seconds until it shows that "Upgrade is successful"  After the firmware upgrade, click on "Reboot" and you will be returned back to the same page OR it will say "Page cannot be displayed".
    Now reset your router :
Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...

  • WRT54GS WEP Security Issues

I have used a WRT54GS for a few years with MAC filtering but no other security.  A few months ago, I decided to add WEP security.  While using WEP security, my wireless connection would go from an excellent signal to dropping randomly.  Additionally, internet browsing would be very slow at times to the point of being unusable.  When I disabled WEP, these issues went away.  What should I look at to troubleshoot this issue?

  • Windows laptops can't connect to Macbook Pro shared internet when WEP security is on

As the title states, my Windows laptops can't connect to Macbook Pro shared internet when WEP security is on.  My iPhone has no problem asking for the password when I try to access the shared internet my MacBook Pro on Mountain Lion is sending, but my Samsung Slate on Windows 8 sees the network and only succeeds in connecting when no password is required.  When security is on, it just tries for a moment and says it can't connect to the network without ever prompting me for the password.  The same thing occurs on my Asus Netbook running Windows XP.  Since all the reviews about OS X's internet sharing mentions "any wifi device" can access it, I haven't assumed it's only compatible with Apple products.  I want my MacBook Pro to save me from needing an external router.

I would post a new question, outline the specific problem you are having and skip all the extra. Outline any steps you have taken already to try and solve the problem. Post the question in the forum most likely to have followers who can answer your question. Give your topic a good title such as: My MacBook Pro cannot connect to my WEP-enabled PC.
Provide any hardware information that may be relevant such as the make and model of your router and method of connection - wired or wireless.
I'm no authority, but have you tried using WPA2/Personal on your PCs? This method is most compatible with Macs.
If the WEP password is a hexadecimal password then on the Mac you need to preceed the number with a $ sign or the hex digits, 0x.

  • AX WEP Security Problem

I've just pulled my AX out of the closet for the first time in a couple of years. I want to use it as a client on my home wireless network to stream Internet radio over my home stereo system. I've gotten it to work--but only without security on my wireless network. Without security, everything went as scripted. But before that I tried it three times with WEP security enabled and failed each time. I won't bore you with the details, since obviously (since I got it to work without security) I went through the correct procedures. I'll just provide a couple of details here.
    * During the setup procedure, everything seemed to be going perfectly until the end.
    * During the procedure, I specified WEP security and gave the utility access to my keychain, where it accessed my WEP password. I 'showed' the password to make sure it was correct.
    * Setup was successful (according to the admin utility) but after restarting a connection between the AX and the existing network could not be established. The light flashed amber and the device disappeared, inaccessible either directly or through the existing network.
Don't know which WEP this is, but the password is 5-digit hex.
    Thanks for your help.
    Jim

I want to use it as a client on my home wireless network to stream Internet radio over my home stereo system.
What is the make/model of your current home wireless network's router?
But before that I tried it three times with WEP security enabled and failed each time.
Any reason that you can't use WPA or WPA2, instead of WEP. WEP is no longer considered secure and it doesn't play "nice" when working with different vendor's equipment.
Don't know which WEP this is, but the password is 5-digit hex.
One of the problems with WEP is that the actual standard relies on a 10 character HEX key for 40bit WEP and a 26 character HEX key for 128bit WEP.
In order to make things easier, vendors use certain algorithms to convert simple alphanumeric passwords (or passphrases) into HEX keys, thus enabling the use of simple easy to remember WEP password rather than lengthy HEX keys. The problem is that different vendors use different algorithms to generate the HEX key and therefore a ASCII password on an AX will be hashed differently on a non-Apple client and vice versa.

  • Intel 5300/5350 Intermittent Wifi Solution - Don't use WEP security!

I recently purchased a Lenovo T400 with the Intel 5350 wireless card (same as the 5300 but with WiMax), and, like a lot of other people on this forum, I could not get the wifi to consistently work. I spent several frustrating days searching these forums and trying pretty much every solution offered (XP 32 bit, Vista 32 bit, Vista 64 bit, w/ & w/out Access Connections, w/ & w/out Intel software, Lenovo drivers vs. Intel drivers, etc.). However, in the end, the solution was totally unrelated.
What I found was that when I was using WEP security on my Linksys WRT54G router (v5 w/ the latest firmware) I could not get wifi to work consistently. In most cases it was hard to get it to work at all. In other cases it might work after a reboot for a few minutes, then stop working again. However, as soon as I either turned off security or changed it to WPA2-Personal, wifi worked like a charm.
I was originally thinking about returning the laptop, since no wifi makes it pretty much unusable. But, with this finding I think I will keep it. Since it is obviously a driver issue, I'm going to assume there will be a driver update in the near future to fix the problem.
Hope this helps some of you who are having the same problems!

That is a fascinating solution to the intermittent mess the Intel cards can go into. Never would have thought secrurity and encryption would affect the performance.
For what it's worth, go into the properties of the wireless card in Device Manager. Go to the Advanced Tab. Set "Roaming Aggressiveness" slider to the lowest, "Power Managment" to lowest, and "Transmit Power" to highest. These were solutiosn that I've run across and fixed the problem for me (I have the regular 5300, hope you will get to use and enjoy WiMax).
