WRT350N and a Sony SMP-N100 media player
My network consists of the WRT350N with wired ethernet to mainframe PC, two wireless laptops, and a Sony Network Media Player(SMP-N100) which is also wireless and connected to a TV. I can access internet services like Netflix and it's working fine, but I bought it mainly to stream media files from my mainframe PC, through the WRT350N, to the Sony Network Media Player. The mainframe PC and the laptops share these same files easily. The oldest hardware is the WRT350N and all OS's are WinXP, WRT350N firmware is 1.03.7. Everything I've found so far hints at DLNA incompatibility....please, someone, say it ain't so. The WRT350N hasn't let me down..... 'till now.

I am able to ping the media player so there is communication to and from pc thru the router.
I made all the changes you suggested and still nothing.
But, in the process of doing all this I made my way to windows media player and its media sharing settings.
I did, after allot of trial and error, get the media player to appear in a window that indicates media share devices.
Soooo many settings, no wonder windows is such a monster....it doesn't want to play with the other kids(lol).
I am able to, now, access the pc from the media player, but, the only format I've been able to display on the tv is .jpeg's.
I have all kinds of pictures(jpg's, gif's, png's) and all kinds of video's(wmv's, avi's, mpeg's) and none of it is protected or illegal copies..
Basically every file format supported by the media player, at least according to their manual.
Do I have to use windows media player to share media from the PC? Is it their stupid DRM aspect thats preventing me from ACCESSING DEVICES I OWN?
Sorry, I didn't mean to yell, I get so frustrated when I hit the various brick walls' in windows.

Windows Media player will not launch from a video link within a website. it worked until I installed FF4. I did install the plug in but still nothing it just goes to a black then blank page when you try to launch the video.

At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 6 things it does are...
Correct any Disk problems.
Repair Permissions.
Clear out Cache Files.
Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
Trash old Log files.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files! :-)
Disconnect the USB cable from any Uninterruptible Power Supply so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.
Then... Try putting these numbers in Network>TCP/IP>DNS Servers, for the Interface you connect with...

Then Apply. For 10.5/10.6 Network, highlight Interface>Advanced button>DNS tab>little + icon.
DNS Servers are a bit like Phone books where you look up a name and it gives you the phone number, in our case, you put in apple.com and it comes back with 17.149.160.49 behind the scenes.
These Servers have been patched to guard against DNS poisoning, and are faster/more reliable than most ISP's DNS Servers.
The Interface that connects to the Internet, needs to be drug to the top of System Preferences>Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations and checked ON.

System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.

H.264 web video loses audio sync and freezes frame in JW media player
Hi,
I am trying to put my H-264 video (.mov) that I compress with Compressor on the web to play in JW media player. The problem is, after 30 seconds of smoothly playing, the video starts to lag, freezes frames and ever since then the audio do not sync with the video anymore (can be as far apart as 10 second). Strangely, this only happens on the longer videos.
I am assuming it has something to do with the compression setting that makes the file is too big and thus create streaming bottlenecking? Maybe I should readjust my parameters?

iTunes has no sound for the movies too. It is obviously an Apple issue since they ALL play just fine on the Windows Media Player.
Encoding you say. I noticed that all the movies without sound are listed in 'Home Video' section of iTunes. The process used to digitize the movies was identical for all the movies. Is there a way to identify the encoding problem? I have redone a movie several times, setting the audio to different levels. When I set it to Stereo the sound came through, but choppy.

Compatibility issues with 1st Ipod Nano and In Car Windows MP3 media player
I use a mac pro running 10.5.6 leopard. My new car has a Windows formatted media MP3 player with USB connector which doesn't read my 1st generation Ipod nano. I can load the music files onto a flash drive and play them in the car but without any of the functionality of an Ipod.
How can I load music files onto my Ipod and use it in my car without
resorting to loading Windows on my mac and reformatting my Ipod to PC? Is
there a crossover bit of software available? Are more recent nano's formatted for both Mac and PC? I have saved the IPod as a external hard disk and converted all music files to MP3 which is the MP3's accepted format. I'm also sure I have the latest software for the IPod. Any ideas? That the car stereo can play MP3s off of mass storage devices plugged into its USB port?
I think if the above is what you meant, then you have two problems. One is that your car stereo likely reads FAT32 formatted storage devices (and possibly, but doubtfully, Windows NTFS formatted devices). Your iPod is likely formatted in Mac format which your stereo won't be able to read.
That can be overcome. Simply restore your ipod on a Windows machine to put it into Windows format then plug it back into your Mac and use it that way. Macs can read and sync to Windows formatted iPods just fine.
But the other problem is, your stereo may not be able to actually control an iPod directly. Does the instruction say it can? Therefore it would be looking on the storage of the iPod that shows up as Mass Storage for tracks, not on the hidden area where iTunes stashes music into and your iPod plays music from.

Adobe Flash Player is just that. A Flash video player. iMovie is a video editor/creator. To open a Flash Video to edit it, you'll probably need to convert it first to AVI or MPEG (check your iMovie help to see which files it can open).

Questions on Flip4Mac and MS Windows Media player for Mac
If one installs "flip4mac" sofware, the plugin is installed. Will there be a icon or an application file for this software and an uninstaller file in the application folder? Do I have to activate the plugin before I use the web site to play the "wma" or "wmv" files? or it is not necessary to do that once it is installed? To uninstall, do I activate the "uninstall" file or the icon in the application folder?
As per Dave, in the Maxfixit, he says he uninstalled and went back to using media player. Does the Microsoft WM player handle DRM files to play? If so why Craig is saying that Flip4Mac is a "MUST HAVE"? Why not install the Microsoft WM player instead of Flip4Mac?
If one wants to install Microsoft WM player, what is latest version available for Mac? and where can I get it from and install it? MS WM player for Mac ver 9 comes in .bin or .hqt formats not .dmg format. Does the .bin format be installed by doule clicking on the file? or you need "stuffit" prog to expand and install the same?

Flip4Mac currently does not play files that are protected by the MS DRM. However, if you use WMP on an Intel Mac you will have to run the browser in Rosetta because the WMP browser plug-in is not a universal binary. I'm not sure that the Mac version of WMP will play DRM protected files.

0x1) is there a way to disable annoying autoplay feature in windows media player: when i play music in "now playing" mode and insert a disc which contains some video WMP stops playing music and asks me to play that disc or starts playing without any questions (e.g. when i insert DVD). in addition when WMP asks before playing it proposes three options: resume playing, go to library and play previous list. choosing "resume playing" you'll not resume the music just played, you'll start playing inserted disc. if you choose "play previous list", it also won't continue the playlist i was just playing, rather a playlist or track before the one i was just playing! very strange behaviour, isn't it?
note that this happends only in "now playing" mode, when library is active everything works fine.
please don't tell to go to control panel and change autoplay settings: it takes no effect. it works when WMP is not started or if WMP is not in "now playing" mode, otherwise WMP ignores that settings and demonstrates his "very intellectual"automatic playing.
0x2) when playing FLAC files windows media player doesn't show progress indicator, it always is positioned at the beginning (or at the place where you've positioned it). if i select multiple FLAC files and click "play with windows media player" it will play only the last file from the selected list.
0x3) when playing AVI files with two or more audio tracks WMP plays only one of them and gives no opportunity to change autio track. in wmp of vista it plays all the audio tracks at the same time (!).
If there is no solution for these problems, please tell me where i can send a feedback about my complaints?i use K-Lite 5.2 full codec pack. in the k-lite codec tweak tool report i see madFLAC.ax installed. i'll try the Xiph.org filters.

HT1849 how to import music and video from windows media player
I want to import my music and videos from the windows media player, and I want to import or put it all in my itunes library. How do I do that. I know there is a button.
Am I missing it? Can someone help me please. I am working off of a laptop. If that helps anything.In Media Player music list, make sure the "Protected" column is displaying. Sort by that column. Any songs that are protected can not be converted to iTunes. You will have to re-rip the CD with the WMP setting to be to not protect the songs.
I had the same problem with album covers and could never fix it. I just gave up. I spoke with people at Apple stores and nothing they suggested worked. -
Cannot view or play audio or video coded for windows media player, and do not see javascript
I designed a website that uses a little bit of JavaScript. It displays fine in IE (9), but not in Firefox. Does anyone know why, and what the fix is?
Also, and more importantly, I coded audio and video files with Windows media player's class id. They will not show or (obviously) play in Firefox. I downloaded and installed the plug in for Firefox, but no change. I'm sure I'm not the only one to have run across this problem, and I'm surprised that Mozilla hasn't built a fix in the 4.0 version. So, any ideas out there?
Thanks!Firefox won't play the media file if there is a classid specified in the object tag. You either need to use conditional code to hide an object without classid for Firefoz from IE or use an embed for Firefox.

It is impossible to use 10.4, Safari and Windows Media Player
it is impossible to use safari to access a site with streaming video without having your mac freeze, i found the only combo i use to freeze everytime, first i install windows media 9, then i go to myspace.com using the safari browser, then i acess a page of someone who has a streaming video file such as a music file, then my safari locks up and freezes. This happens every, single, time. I know its not a fluke and i know i didnt do anything wrong and i enjoy myspace so there is no way that i can have media player and it ****** me off so i want to know if there are any alternatives or if my mac is just a piece of crap and messed up. without the media player i have to deal with a pop up everytime i access someones page telling me to download media player even though it doesnt work so thats kinda hilarious. k someone help me out
I know nothing about all this stuff but for kicks I went to the site you said and when I play a normal music file it works fine in safari. It does load slowley. When I tried to view a music video it says you have to have "windows media 9" and you must use "internet explorer". Have you tried using your internet explorer in your applications folder instead of safari? I still could not get the videos to work but I have had this problem befor. Sometimes if you keep messing with the settings in the network tab of the media player it eventually works. But the site itself looks like they have a little ways to go and just might not be ready for mac yet. If you don't get this fixed I can try the site on my pc at work tomorrow and see if that works, unless you have already tried this. But bottom line with safari is its not compatable. At least what their site states.

Office for Mac: windows media player and Napster?
I have recently bought an iMac g5 and have had Microsoft Office for Macintosh installed. Last night I was having my first general rummage and discovered that I appear to have a Windows Media installer included in the software for Office. I have a Napster account and had previously assumed that I would not be able to access it from my iMac.
Could anyone advise me whether it would be sensible for me to try to install Windows Media from this Office for Mac package, and whether it would cause any issues with iTunes or otherwise?
If anyone has any experience using Napster on an Apple (hope the coincedence of those words in the same sentence is not too sacreligious), please shout, whether good or bad.

There is indeed a version of Windows Media Player for Macs. However, it is version 9 whereas there is a later version for PC's that is much more full featured. In addition Microsoft have recently officially discontinued Windows Media Player for Mac after not updating it for years. This means that it does not work with Napster unfortunately. However you can use Windows Media Player for Mac to play back Windows Media Files without copy protection (DRM) such as windows media files from the internet. To do this you can install Windows Media Player for Mac. Alternatively Microsoft suggests that you use the Flip4Mac windows media player plugin (www.flip4mac.com/wmv.htm) which allows you to play back Windows Media files using Quicktime Player.
I find this to be a superior solution (It is also free) as the experience is more seamless and it supports more formats. Therefore I suggest you download and install this and do not install windows media player. -
Download video file and open in media player
