WRT350N Storage failures

I'm using a WRT350N (v1.03.2) with a Western Digital My Book Premium 320Gb Dual Interface (USB and Firewire). I'm having several troubles and wondered if anyone had gotten better results.
The router is working fine, and wired connections are rock solid. The wireless is flaky but more up then down since I've set it into G only mode. I'm working the wireless issues separately and will discuss this later after I have more data.
The storage is a problem though. I connected the drive as formatted from WD (FAT32) and was able to see the drive, and share the partition as "Media". Connections will work great for a little while. But after copying several large files to the drive it becomes unresponsive. The router still functions, but access to the share will hang and timeout. I can access the web interface but if I click on the "Storage" tab the application will lock up and never display the Storage page.
I've tested the drive separately on my Mac and Windows systems with no problems, I can even use the firewire interface while the router is struggling to access the USB.
If I reboot the router it will come back for a little while, but then fails again pretty quickly.
I am pretty happy with the hardware, but I think the firmware needs a little work, and hope that some of the kinks are worked out of the firmware soon.
Does anyone have positive experience using the WRT350N to serve a network share?
Thanks,
D

I have had the EXACT same issue and experience with the WRT350N (v1.03.2), it locks up when I copy or read large files from the USB attached storage drive.  I have used three different drive which all work fine when plugged directly into a USB 2.0 port.
Is there a firmware fix?  This is pretty pathetic as it renders the USB storage useless for me.  I guess I will return the WRT350N (v1.03.2) router.

  • What Everyone Should KNow and Linksys Should Advertize About WRT350N Storage Link Limitations

I have spent hours with Linksys online chat trying to get my wrt350N storage link to work as advertised. Basically, I want to hook up a 400gb mybook hard drive and use the networked drive to backup my netwroked computers over the wireless network. While I can write individual files to the networked hard drive, and can copy and paste large folders using windows explorer, I can not use backup programs. The netowrked drive reports incorrect information as to its capicity to "my computer" and always shows up as "read only" while some programs don't seem to mind this, every backup program I have used has problems with this clitch.
After several sessions with linksys and having retuend the router to linksys for a new one, this is what technical support said this morning:
"You: ok so if I have you right, the router's storage link is not guaranteed to work at all with >300gb storage devices, does not work at all with 3rd party backup programs, and does not provide a backup program of its own, is that the bottom line?
Tech Support: Exactly. That's its product limitation."
Just so everyone is clear, Linksys does not gauruntee that storage link works at all with drives greater than 300gb, it is not compatable with 3rd part backup progrmas and does not provide a backup program of its own.
This is independant of ntfs vs fat32 and yes I do have the new firmware 1.03.2 and have it correctly installed (linksys checked all of my settings online).
If I am missing something and there are others out there who are gettnig storage link to work with backup software, I would love to know what I am doing wrong, because 7 different linksys tecnical support people have been unable to tell me.
Since Linksys is unwilling to place these product limitations on their packaging, I thought that potential users deserve to know the limitations of this product.

sounds like you are in the same boat I was. I bought the WRT350N to use with my macbook pro and attached a 500gig usb drive to it for remote storage. I got nothing but permission problems copying files. The save usb drive worked fine in a dlink storage box. I took mine back and ordered the

  • WRT350N Storage Password Access in Vista

This might be a known problem 'cause I saw at least one other thread where this was mentioned.
I have a USB drive connected to my WRT350N and a share setup on the router. I can mount the drive locally via "Map Network Drive" and \\192.168.1.1\MyDrive and I can even do it across the WAN using the routers WAN IP. When the drive is mapped I get a password dialog and can mount the drive using user "Guest" with no password.
My problem is that I can't get Vista to accept the passwords for any other accounts than the guest account. I get a "Logon Unsuccessful" message. This includes the admin account. No a big problem for my local network since I can mount drives under the guest account and grant guest access to all the drives fo RW, but not wise for accessing my data across the internet.
Anyone have any ideas - Is this a Vista thing or something that will need to wait for Firmware 2.0 for the WRT350N?
    Thanks!
    Rob

I have the same logon problem using Vista Home Premium edition.
The is no "secpol.msc" file to edit. Any other options?

  • WRT350N - Storage Feature Performance

Yesterday I purchased the WRT350N. The 'other' gigabit wireless router was $130. The WRT350N was $199. The reason I paid the difference was for the storage access feature. I have an external HD that was connected to a desktop. In the house we use laptops and have our media on this drive. We use the Windows offline files feature to have a current synced copy on our laptops at all times. Also, if the drive was to fail we have copies of the files on our laptops as well. Whenever we connect to the network, the drive automatically syncs.
With this configuration everything works great with that exception that the desktop has to remain on at all times. With the WRT350N I saw an opportunity to use the router instead. By the way, the drive is formatted FAT32.
From the moment I created the share and connected from a PC there were performance issues. The root drive showed up fine. I can see all the files (about 10 folders and a dozen files -- at the root). Once I double-clicked the 'My Music' folder, which contains about 60 folders and 100 files, the display took several minutes.
I thought maybe it was caching the file lists....I don't know. It's a new router. Maybe it would be better the next time I went in. Nope. It is consistently slow. I used the Windows Media Player to search for music files. It won't complete.
While I can still surf the Internet, I can't access the drive at all once it froze. I had to unplug the router.
So.....I spent $69 extra dollars for this functionality. I hope that a firmware upgrade is coming.

Having the same problem. Everything works fine except for the ftp server. I can reach it through my LAN but not from the internet. I wasn't even pingable until I flashed the firmware with the same version a couple times. Now I'm pingable but still no outside access.

  • WRT350N STorage

I have bought myself a WRT350N - my old wireless AP had eventually given up the ghost - and a 1TB HD to connect as storage... but now I discover that has been formatted by the Linksys as FAT32 (is that possible - 930 GB on FAT32?) and that all files have the system and archive bits set when copied. This makes it totally useless. You can't copy anything on top. Robocopy won't copy anything at all. How does one actually contact Linksys with a problem? Is the router braindead? Rgds Martin

Hunny I don't think they have email support anymore and this is a user to user community forum FYI.  It will get everything to that format if you choose to, I think you also pressed the claim function on router management for this to happen.
"Claim. For a blank disk, click the Claim button to create a partition that will be formatted as FAT32".
And so that's what probably happened in your case. So it is possible if you formatted that large drive on the device. You can choose otherwise if you had this formatted previously on NTFS (is that what you prefer to have it??). as it says "If a formatted disk is attached to the Router, the Partition, File System, Total Space, and Free Space columns describe the partition(s) of the disk."
which means it will and can support both file formats...got me dandy file reader software here to read whatever so I think you should do the same if you wish to... google for it and its freeware. If you want the latter then get that formatted before you have that be recognized on the storage router...  the answer is really your preferred partitions also..
You can call support nowadays, check the main site for that

  • Wrt350n - storage issue

I upgraded my WRT350N to 1.03.7 as I added a WD 500GB USB 2.0 drive (NTFS formated). The problem arises when a workstation attached to the drive and has not been authenticated (i.e. home XP Pro PC has no password authentication, I attach (net use n: ...) the storage device. I then setup the screen saver on the PC to use pictures referencing the new network drive. So far okay, but then the PC reboots. The network drive has not been authenticated. PC locks (only Alt-Ctl-Del seems to work to get out of the lockup) as does the WRT350N (the router passes traffic, but can not be administered, and storage can not be accessed - must be power reset to fix). Any suggestions other than add a password to my home PC?

I was running the beta fw version. Problem occurred when I upgraded/downgraded (not sure which based on forum posts) to the latest production version 1.03.7. Maybe I should go back to the beta ver.

  • WRT350N Storage problem

    Using WRT350N with Firmware 1.03.2.
I can't detect any USB storage device attached to the router.
I have tried numerous USB Storage devices and numerous file systems (including  FAT32), but I can not get the router to recognize these drives.
the Mass Storage devices that I use are in various sizes (128MB, 64MB, 160GB).
I even formatted the disks to get them blank.
    to observe the problem:
If I go to the "Storage" Tab and "Disk" sub-tab, all I can see is:
Next to "Disk detail" i see the message "There are currently no available disks"
next to "Erase Disk" i see the message "No disks are currently defined"
what can be done to fix this?

Well try upgrading the firmware of the router & keep on holding tightly
the reset button in such a way that power light is blinking on the
router & then do a complete network power cycle i.e., unplug the power
cables from the modem & from the router & then plug in the power cable
to the modem first once all the lights are solid green you could plug
in the power cable to the router & then check using the administrative login it will definately work!!

  • WRT350n storage link itunes problem

There is not enough room on "\\Linksyswrt350n\all_partitions" to copy all of the requested files. iTunes will copy as many files as possible. I know for a fact that I have plenty of room on the drive. It seems itunes is having trouble getting access to the drive... not sure how to fix this

I just bought the wrt350n.  have not hooked it up yet.  I plan on putting a mybook 750gb drive on the storage link and putting my itunes library on it.  how difficult is this?

  • WRT350N Storage Link usage?

Just bought the router and set it up. Works fine for what I had replaced before (G speed). Now I tried to enable the Storage Link. Put a 2GB Flash drive in the unit. It is on, and on the webpage I can see it. However, I can't see it via the LAN? I have Network Magic to 'manage' my network, and it can't see it? However, a NEW VIEW from my computer reports this... ____________ c:\>net view Server Name Remark ---------------------------------------- \\IRVS Gen5 \\LARAINE-HP \\LINKSYSWRT350N LinksysWRT350N The command completed successfully. ------------ The last UNC is the flash drive. Trying to view it reports this : c:\>net view \\LINKSYSWRT350N System error 5 has occurred. Access is denied. I've tried ALL sorts of permissions and group creations. Still noting will allow me to look at it. Network Magic doesn't even see the device as a SHARE? Suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Irv S.

Yes, figured that out. The reason it didn't work before was that I had the Router settings open in the Web Browser and any other attempts to reach 192.168.1.1 didn't ask for a UID and P/W, just opened the main router page. Working now though. Thanks, Irv S.

  • MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2013) Flash Storage Failure

So I've been getting Kernel panics for the past few weeks on and off. So I ran the Apple Diagnostics and right off the bat told me my hard drive was failing. I'm going in tomorrow to the Genius Bar. I have Apple Care and Time Machine.
My question is how are they going to replace the Flash Storage? I can't find anything online about one failing let alone being able to replace/upgrade one.
    Thanks for the help!
    Nate

You need to replace the flash storage. Note that the MacBook Pro with Retina display comes with flash storage because a SSD doesn't fit on it.
I recommend you to get an external drive and store the files there instead of replacing the flash storage, which is expensive and will void warranty

  • WRT350N Storage Link Disk size

Anyone know why my 250GB external HD, which has been formatted via both windows and the router, only shows 111.9 GB is available when connected to the router? When I unplug it from the router and connect it to my laptop, it shows the whole disk is available.
    Thanks in advance!!

I finally got it to read the whole drive last night, however, no matter what shares I have set up, I can only read the disk, and not wirte to it. I have the admin and guest share set to r/w but it still will not let me write! I love the router, but have never been able to get the storage link to work, and am becoming growingly frusterated.

  • Wrt350n storage link

I want to be able to access my 120g hard drive that is plugged into my wrt350n via the usb port.  I want to access it from remote pc's and give others access to these files
I cant find the directions, and the guy at linksys discouraged me after the sales guy at a comp store told me how he is doing it at home and it works great!
any instructions or leads on where the instructions are would be appreciated!

not quite sure whether there is any white paper on it or not...however , in order to achieve what you are trying to do .. you need to connect the formatted drive to the router's usb port and access the router using http://192.168.1.1 ... login to the router's web ui and access the drive and create shares in it ..
in order to access the usb drive from the computer , go to start >> run >>\\router'sipadd >>click OK
after the drive is found , right click on it and click Map Network Drive .. this will help you see the drive under My Computer ..

  • Wrt350n usb storage- what will it handle

The doc seems to imply that if you hook a usb disk up, it will have to be reformatted. Is this correct?
Can I move an existing ntfs file syetem usb disk from a windows xp computer to the wrt350n storage usb slot, and actually access the ntfs data?
It says it supports multiple disk partitions. This suggests one might support multiple USB disks as individual partitions with a usb hub? Is that correct?
    fyi for you browsers...
This is a slick feature, the docs could use some fleshing out.
In searching for an answer to my question, I came across lots of how the heck do you use this (wrt350n storage)- Go to the set up page usually at 192.168.1.1,
click storage. One of the screens will let you name the "computer", defaults
to linksyswrt350n or some such (lets say foo), and the windows workgroup
name to join, lets say "myworkgroup". Also name the partition "mydisk"
Then computers in Myworkgroup see a network computer named
    \\foo\mydisk\
    good luck...

    Hi,
NTFS works. No need to reformat, existing data is safe (unless you use Linksys to erase it).
On the first tab "Disk", have you done "Create Share"?
On the next tab "Shares", it should show the HD under "Share Name" as "All_Partitions".
Press "Create New Share", give it a "Share Name" and save.
You might have to set permissions under "Share Access".
Under the tab "Administration", set the "Machine Name" and "Workgroup Name" I used the same WG as my network.
Under "User Management", "User Name / Properties", set a password.
You can also setup "FTP Server", both local and internet access.
It's a couple of month since I set mine up.
    Good luck,
    dRdoS7.

  • Do all the weblogic application servers need to share storage in order to implement high availability?

I would like to understand if a shared storage is required for all application servers that will run weblogic + oracle identity manager.  I've been using the following oracle guides : http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E40329_01/doc.1112/e28391/iam.htm#BABEJGID and http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/availability/maa-deployment-blueprint-1735105.pdf and from my interpretation both talk about configuring all the application servers with access to a shared storage.  From an architecture standpoint, does this mean all the application servers need access to an external hard disk?  if shared storage is required what are the steps to implement it?
    Thanks,
    user12107187

You can do it and it will work. But Fusion Middleware products have EDG to provide guidelines to help you to implement high availability.
Having a shared storage will help you to recover from storage failure, otherwise this might be a point of failure.
    Enterprise Deployment Overview
"An Oracle Fusion Middleware enterprise deployment:
Considers various business service level agreements (SLA) to make high-availability best practices as widely applicable as possible
Leverages database grid servers and storage grid with low-cost storage to provide highly resilient, lower cost infrastructure
Uses results from extensive performance impact studies for different configurations to ensure that the high-availability architecture is optimally configured to perform and scale to business needs
Enables control over the length of time to recover from an outage and the amount of acceptable data loss from a natural disaster
Evolves with each Oracle version and is completely independent of hardware and operating system "
