WRT45GC - Not connecting to NTL Broadband, but internet works fine minus the router

I seem to have a problem try to get my WRT45GC to work as an accesspoint for my NTL connection. If the modem is plugged directly into my PC via ethernet cable, internet works fine. But if I plug my WRT45GC into the modem then have a direct connection to my pc from the router, i only get limited or no connectivity.
Also once this has been set up my laptop can pick up the wireless network but once again no internet.
I have been told different things by different people ie, the modem and router may have the same IP address, the router may not have DCHP enabled ( I dont have the IP address to log onto the router) please can someone help
If i unplug the router and have the modem connecting directly to the pc, internet works fine again.

if u have a cable connection....follow the steps below
1) connect the computer to one of the LAN ports on the router...and connect the modem to the router's internet port.
2) check the ip add on the computer . to check the ip add go to start -> run -> cmd -> ipconfig...ensure that u have an ip add of 192.168.1.x and default gateway 192.168.1.1
2) access the router using http://192.168.1.1 . Keep the username blank and the default password is "admin".
3) go to the "mac add clone" subtab , enable it and click clone your pc's mac..save the settings....do a power cycle
4) go to the "wireless" tab , change the ssid , channel - 1 or 11.
If this does not work for u , revert back with the details - ISP name , cable / DSL , internet ip add off of the status page on the router....

If you have not done so, try exiting the Photo app (and maybe more apps if you have a lot open) from the Open Apps List and see if a discount/reconnect opens the app. If that does not work, try powering down the iPad and test. If it is still not working try a hard reset by pressing both Home and Sleep/Wake buttons at the same time until the Apple graphic appears, ignoring the Slide to Power Off button.

Select a broken track and press ctrl-i to Get Info. Look on the summary tab for the location where iTunes "thinks" the file should be. Where is it really? Post back the two locations and I can suggest the best approach.

Not connecting to Music Store or Software Updates (but Internet works fine)

About a month ago, I moved in to a new apartment and set up a new cable internet connection. After a very frustrating installation process (Netgear is not very Mac-friendly), the Internet worked. A couple days later, I realized I couldn't get onto the iTunes Music Store. It just tries for a while and then says it can't reach it and for me to check my Network Diagnostics.
I tried to get to the music store when I was at work on an Ethernet connection (as opposed to my usual wireless), but that didn't work either. I also realized today that my Software Updates aren't working, because they cannot connect either. It just tells me to click on Network Diagnostics, which I always do to no avail.
Also tonight, I realized I only have 4.5 GB space left on my computer. This computer is less than a year old, and I don't see how this is possible. I deleted a lot of things, and that didn't make any difference. Could I possibly have a virus? I thought Macs didn't even get viruses!? What should I do?

I got this message from you, but I still have the same problem of not being able to connect to the iTunes store, software updates, Safari, CDDB, Help, Southwest's Ding, my weather widget, and several other things. I found a post you did in July where you helped someone else who it sounded like had the same problems that I am having. However, I tried your approaches to that -- isolating the problem (it affects all accounts on this computer), typing in that number (17.254.3.183) in Safari (says the server stopped responding), and now I really hope I don't have to back up everything and start over. Safari/Firefox will not connect to websites. BUT Entourage works normal.

For the past 2 weeks both my iMac and MacBook Pro have experienced the same problem. Neither can connect to a website via Safari or Firefox BUT both send/receive email from Entourage. When i troubleshoot the Airport it says all is working properly.
This happens at both my home office (apple router) and downtown office (Belkin).
Ideas anyone? The only software installed lately is for a wireless printer with WiFi. But i don't see how that is relevant.

Hi. Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Your problem seems a little weird. Have you tried trashing preference files?
Safari's is located in user>library>preferences and is called com.apple.safari.plist
I'm not sure about Firefox's, but it is probably inside a folder called Mozilla or Firefox.

Cannot get Airport to connect to net.. but ethernet works fine

I was trying to install an Airport Express and failed in great style.
How ever I have removed the airport from use and now use just modem\ router again.
but I have tried resetting airport settings .. as it now assigns a self IP address of 169.15.*. instead of 10.1.1.* .
I try adding the DNS as 10.1.1.1 (as on my partners iMac) and all the settings.. but it still wont connect to my network (well it connects but i cant use the net)
but when i plug in ethernet.. works great....
Have tried removing airport, adding dns address, manually adding details and that but still cant get my wireless cnnection working again (it did work until i attempted to install the airport express, but yea now airport card doesnt work.

Any resolution on this Paul? Today I began with the same problem. My Macbook Pro on S.L. has been working great wirelessly. Now, it connects to my router and gets an ip address. But no internet. However, when I plug it into the router with a cable, I'm on in no time.
I have logged into my router and cleared all the ip addresses and even reset it to factory settings. I've deleted my networks from my system prefs as well.
Right now I'm running it hardwired to a Linksys router running dd-wrt- which is as close to wireless as I could come up with in a pinch.
What did you do? Or does anyone else have ideas?

LXDM does not come after root logout (but it works fine after normal

I recently installed Arch with LXDE (and LXDM as login manager).
Everything works fine, except one strange feature I hope to solve thanks to this post.
I think I have to configure something on LXDM or X11.
I'll try to explain my problem.
When I boot computer, LXDM come.
If I login as one of my normal users, no problem: I can login and logout as many times I want, and LXDM come every time I logout.
But if I login as root, then after logout LXDM no longer come (after root logout the standard console (no X11) come).
Any suggestions?
I very rarely login as root, but in such cases I do want LXDM after logout.

Of course logging as root is a very rarely thing for me.
With su and sudo I can perform everything.
The point is to compare the desktop environmnet of "root" and "giulio".
User giulio is customized: theme, icons, panel and so on.
Instead, root has the standard LXDE environment (standard icon, standard theme, etc).
Sometimes I want to see if I installed theme for giulio only or for all. To accomplish this task I login as root and launch LXAppereance program: if I see the new icon theme (for example) then I installed that for all, otherwise, i installed that only for giulio.
This is why I found such problem I'm talking about.
Of course this is nothing important.
I can live all my life without logging as root.
But, I prefer to have all the things ordered in my system.
Now that I see LXDM is not properly configured (after root logout) I prefer to fix it (this does not mean I actually continue to log in as root).
It's just to fix things.

External backup drive will not mount on new mac mini. still works fine on the old one. new one is running mavericks

I just bought new-to-me mac mini running OSX mavericks.
Trying to migrate from old mac mini using simpletech external hard drive.
It still mounts on my old mac mini (system 10.5) but will not mount or show up when I plug it in to the new mac mini running mavericks.
Any ideas?

We were thinking along the same lines. While at home I dug up a firewire enclosure and put a bootable GUID formatted drive in it (that I had in one of the usb enclosures) and started her computer holding down the option key and then chose to boot from the external firewire. All usb drives are now mounting upon connection. I asume that her drive has bad sectors on it (even though the SMART status says it's OK) and is not loading all the drivers properly for USB to mount. I was suspicious from the beginning that the OS was corrupt when she first had me look at it. It was at that point that I booted it in target mode, connected to my Macbook Pro, and then CCC'd to a usb drive that I had. I then had a couple of difficulties installing the new OS. Should have known......
I am now going to put a new drive in it for her and she'll be up and running.

IPad 2's screen wont turn on, but touch works fine, and the iPad still works with a projector.

One of my teachers came to me for help today. Her iPad 2 works fine except for one thing. The display won't turn on. We know the iPad still works, as when we connect it to a projector via VGA, the iPad's screen shows up through the projector, and we can navigate through the ipad using touch on the iPad's digitizer.
Restoring the iPad didn't help, so I'd like to know if there's a simple fix for this, or if we should take this to the Apple Store.

Try this - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)

My keyboard doesn't work from the login screen, but when I login as a guest user it works fine (minus the brightness buttons, playback buttons, etc.).

I've already switched out the batteries and the keyboard works fine, so I fear it might be some sort of bug? All the methods of restarting or resetting certain settings can only be done from the login screen or from within an account, when the keyboard doesn't work, and the guest options are limited to non existent.

Try doing a SMC reset, you may need to do this 2-3 times as sometimes the reset doesn't always "take" the first time. To do a SMC reset, shut down the computer, unplug the power cord from the wall and computer, wait 15-20 seconds and restart normally and test. If after 2-3 resets it still does not work test another keyboard. If that keyboard works then this indicates your keyboard has failed and needs to be replaced.

'Could not join "wireless name". A connection timeout occured.' This happened randomly and my other computer works fine and the router is fine but it comes up with this message.

Airport Extreme Blinking Amber But Internet Working Fine Multiple Status Messages

I have Airport Extreme 5.6.1. It started blinking amber showing Airport did not have a valid Internet Address. I was concerned about with changing anything if I could still connet. Checked a forum and it suggested to go to sheck status and see the problem. I did and now I have a new mesage. No DNS server address. I am hesitant about doing anything because if I do and lose internet connection I am really up a creek without a paddle.

Just to update. I unplugged my modem for a short time. When it powered up the light was green on my Airport Extreme.
