WRT54G and adsl dumb modem and vista

Hey everyone, i recently bought a new dell laptop m1710 with windows vista. I didn't want the vista cause i knew it still has issues but was not able to downgrade, but anyways with my bitlord client v1.1 and also tested v0.53, if i download a few files in like 5-10 minutes my wireless goes limited or no connectivity. I tried port forwarding my bitlord program but still had issues, disabled user account control, windows firewall and defender, just have avg installed. tried different combos but still goes limited or no connectivity. i have yet to call windows if theres a fix for this but wondering if it could be my linksys..like a certain setting but the thing is that my older brother has a vista laptop and has no issues with his bitlord client...using same settings and same client. it just seems something is blocking me from downloading/uploading a certain amount and then cuts me off but i cant find anything in vista security/firewall setting that could be causing it. if anyone can lead me to the right direction that would be great. thanks.

Seems to be a PC concern.. anyway a temporary fix might be to assign a static IP and DNS on your PC on the wireless network...
If you need detailed instructions on how to do this just holler...

  • Wrt54g and vista CONFLICTS

    Hello,
I bought two new Dell computers with Vista Home and Home Premium installed in February.  I have had on going problems with communicating with the remote computer which has the printer wired to it.  Using Wireless WRT54G router.  Intermittantly loses connection to internet, just comes back by itself.  Bigger problem is printing via the router is problematic.  When using Word 2003, can't print. Printer set-up get's deleated.  When I try to re-install the printer, the system hangs.  At times, something happens and I can't access the remote computer at all--says I don't have permission or some such. In a few days it will magically start working again for not apparent reason.  Another wierd problem....AFTER completing a print job, the print processes take on a life of their own and the CPU usage grows to 100% freezing the computer!
I have narrowed this down to Linksys, because the remote computer does not have these problems, which is connected via USB to the printer.  Only the computer using the wireless router has these problems.
Eventhough Linksys says the router is compatible with VISTA, I think they've missed something, and there is still a conflict!  HELP!  LINKSYS, CAN YOU HEAR ME????

By default, Windows Vista uses NTVLM2 for authentication when attempting to map network drives to a Samba network share, such as your Home or Website share on Datastore01.
This problem can be resolved by making a change in the Windows Vista registry. The necessary change switches Windows Vista's authentication policy from "NTVLM2 responses only" to "LM and NTLM - use NTLMV2 session security if negotiated."
Try this and let me know if it works.

  • WRT54G and Vista x64 drops

To resolve this issue, disable the DHCP BROADCAST flag in Windows Vista. To do this, follow these steps: Click Start, type regedit, If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click Continue. Locate and then click the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\{GUID} [this is the first numeric string startins with {90...
Right click on DhcpConnEnableBcastFlag, Modify, and set the value to 0 (numeric zero). I then rebooted.
I have not had a drop in 24 hours. Hope it continues. Found this at: support.microsoft.com/kb/928233 " This issue occurs because of a difference in design between Windows Vista and Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2). Specifically, in Windows XP SP2, the BROADCAST flag in DHCP discovery packets is set to 0 (disabled). In Windows Vista, the BROADCAST flag in DHCP discovery packets is not disabled. Therefore, some routers and some non-Microsoft DHCP servers cannot process the DHCP discovery packets."

Wow thats great, i will really try that on my machine. Thankx for your Post.

  • WRT54GS and Vista?

Ok so I've tried everything I can think of and I still can't get this router to work with Vista at all. I have cable internet and want the router to be wired to a Vista machine, but when it is I can't get it to connect to the internet at all. Any suggestions? I've tried updating firmware and that didn't seem to do anything. Maybe I'm just stupid and don't know what settings I should be using? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Connect the computer to the router .... reset the router for few seconds ...
Disable all firewall & antivirus software ....

  • WRT54G and Trendnet TDM-C400 ADSL modem

    Hello guys,
I'm having some major issues here, and hoping maybe the community might be able to help.
Just moved, and with the move I chose to move to another ISP using PPPoE.
So I bought a Trendnet ADSL 2 Modem which, when connected directly in my laptop works fine. However, having a few devices to connect, I wish to use my WRTG54G router.
So what I do is plug in my modem in the INTERNET port of my router, no go. I've tried combining many configurations on the router and the modem, and still... nothing!
    I'm desperate!!! lol
Thanks for the help, and don't hesitate if you need more info to help!
    Thank you!

If you need to set PPPoE try to Follow this link , if it is other than PPPoE you cannot set it.

  • WRT54G and Comcast Cable Modem Setup

Please help.  I just bought a LINKSYS WRT54GS and I'm trying to set up a wireless network for my laptop (No other computers on network), and my ISP is Comcast.  The model # on the Comcast Broadband Modem is DHG535-2 and the manufacturer is RCA.  The computer sees the network but only shows a local connection.  No internet.  I have tried everything and it will not let get on the internet.  I have checked all cables several times and the connections seem to be right.  I don't know where to go from here.  Can someone please help me?  I will be very grateful!
    Thanks

Is your problem related to getting on the internet in general?  Or are you able to get on the internet, but now you need to get the wireless network setup?
    1) There might be some lights on the cable modem that indicate if it is successfully connecting to the internet.  On mine(a different model/brand) I have three lights that must all be lit up to indicate I'm on the internet.  Whenever they are not all lit up, it is usually an indication that either there is a problem with comcast's network, a problem with my coaxial cables providing the Comcast service, interferance (one time they had to come out and replace some of their equipment at my apartment complex, if you have analog cable and look at the lower channels on your cables TV, 4-10,and there is lots of static, then this might be a problem, a tech told me those channels are close to the range that internet is provided on, so static on them can indicate problems that would also effect internet0, or the lights not being lit up might indicate you hagve registered that modem on their network.  There is some sort of process that you have to do when you first get comcast internet service that gets you setup on their network.  I believe it registers the MAC address of your cable modem.  If the lights are not lit up(this is where you need to refer to your cable modem manual to see what lights indicate problems), then you may need to go through this process or check with Comcast.
In my case I had a CD from comcast in the Startup Package, had to connect cable modem to my PC via USB(what a freaking pain), and then go through the software's wizard to get setup on their network.  This also installs some junk on my computer like a usb driver.  Additionally, I had a computer with two network cards, and the software would not work correctly on it(kept choosing the wrong network card.  I had to actually remove one of the cards, and then go through the wizard.
    2) You should be able to connect the cable modem directly to your computer via CAT5, to see if you can get an itnernet connection that way first.  This will at least verify that you can get on the internet before you intreduce all the other variables of the router.  If you can't get on this way.

  • WRT54GS and Nintendo Wii

I have just added a Nintendo Wii to my home network controlled by a WRT54GS (v6) router.  It works fine - my family is able to play games with players over the internet.  I am also able to use my home network from XP and Vista PCs.
The problem is when doing both at the same time (a regular occurance).
As soon as I start browsing the internet while the kids are playing the Wii causes the router to crash (it restarts).  It is then quite difficult to get it back working again (everything has to be rebooted).
I have the latest firmware instaled on both Wii and router (e.g. router version is v1.52.5).
My Cable modem uses DHCP and wireless security is WPA2 Personal/AES, which I have checked on Nintendo web site is supported by them.
What could be causing this problem?

Hi, I think I have narrowed this down somewhat with some testing. Believe it or not, this only happens when browsing the internet with my favourite browser - Google Chrome.. I don't seem to get this with Firefox. So it looks like The Chrome browser is doing something a bit non-standard and causing this problem. Greg

  • Wireless repeater using wrt54g and wap54g

i am having problems connecting my wrt54g and wap54g as wireless repeater. my setup is as follows: 1. wrt54g (192.168.1.10) is connected to a dsl provider modem/router (192.168.1.1) (dhcp server). With this setup i do not have any problems connecting my wired pc and laptop to the network. 2. on my 2nd floor the signal is faint thus i need to extend the wireless signal. 3. i have a wap54g (192.168.1.12) that i would like to repeat the signal of the wrt54g. 4. i tried the guide from the website but it was general thus there are some settings (recommended) that are missing. questions: 1. does the 2 wireless ap need to have the same SSID, channel and wep settings? 2. what should be the gateway for the wap54g? 192.168.1.1? 3. when using wifi, would i see 2 access point? or a single 1 and whoever is nearer? 4. does the wrt54g need to be a dhcp server? or the 192.168.1.1 can do that. 5. does my ideal setup be 2 AP and not 1 wireless router/ap and 1 ap? 6. can the wrt54g use wireless distribution mesh? 7. i cannot see my wrt54g from the firware downloads, mine is v7 and there are only v6 and v8? am from asia and this might be an asian version? any help would be appreciated.

what i did was the following: 1. enable wap54g as a wireless client to look for the main ssid. 2. copy the mac address to the option for wireless repeater. 3. i can now use the wap54g as a repeater. when i shut down everything and turn it on, i cannot again hook up. again, i have to do the steps above for the wap54g to act as a repeater. any idea on what the problem is? i am sure that what i am putting on the mac address is correct. even when i shut down and turn on all router and accesspoints. the connection seems lost.

  • Using WRT54G and WET11 with another router as the Gateway

I have a wired network in the house with access to the Internet through a router on the 2nd floor. I connect a ReplayTV DVR in the basement to the network with a Cat5 cable running across the floor between the DVR and a switch. I'd like to replace that with a wireless solution.
I have at my disposal one WET11 bridge and two WRT54G routers. Neither of those routers is the one connecting the house to the cable modem. Is there a way I can connect one of the WRT54G routers to a switch in the basement and have it talk to the WET11 connected to the DVR on the other side of the basement?

I made some progress, but then ran into a couple of snags. I'm not routing with the WRT54G so I connect it to a switch through one of the 4 ports that is not the one labeled Internet. The network looks like this:
    Cable Modem --> Netgear Router --> Switch --> WRT54G(port 1)
    Laptop --> WRT54G(port 4)
With that cable arrangement I was able to log in to the WRT54G's administration page from my laptop, give the WRT54G a name and change it's IP address to 192.168.1.251. I left the subnet as 255.255.255.0.I also started to configure some other settings, but I did not write them down. I was able to access the Internet from the laptop at that time.
I was also able to move the cable going from the laptop to port 4 on the WRT54G with the WET11 Ethernet Bridge and could access the Internet. And, I was able to remove the bridge, turn on the laptop's wireless capability and access the Internet through a wireless connection to the WRT54G.
I tried to access the WRT54G's admin page wirelessly, but was not able to get to the login screen. I ran out of time and set everything aside for a week. When I got back to it, I was unable to access the WRT54G's loging screen. I can still connect the laptop to port 4 on the WRT54G and reach the Internet, but I cannot do so using the bridge.
Is there some tool I can use to determine the IP address of the WRT54G? I tried resetting (using the button on the back), and I tried several IP addresses in addition to the one I'm pretty sure I used. I'm assuming that I'm trying to log in using the wrong IP address.
I have a second WRT54G that I can still log on to. However, I don't want to do anything with it until I understand what I did wrong with the first one. (Both of them are version 6.)
Another snag is that I was never able to get the setup program to find the WET11. It claimed that it couldn't find the one I had plugged into the laptop's Ethernet port, even though I was able to connect to the Internet using that bridge to the WRT54G. However, that does not work anymore.
Pointers as to what went wrong would be most appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • Connect WRT54G and WRT54GS

Hello, Hoping for some help with the following. So, in my living room, i have my comcast dual phone/cable modem, my linksys wrt54gs, and range of wireless devices (PC, PS3, Wii) We just bought an XBOX 360 today for my son's room, and i am trying to figure out how to connect the 360 online, without having to buy the Xbox or Linksys wireless adapters and without moving the modem into his room. Is it possible to connect my WRT54G wirelessly to my WRT54GS and then use ethernet from the wrt54g to the 360? Expert advice needed. Thanks in advance. Gavin

You cannot do what you described, at least not with Linksys firmware.  Linksys routers are designed to generate a wireless network, not to connect to an existing wireless network.
The function that you described is called a "wireless ethernet bridge".
One option would be to check around for third party firmware, to see if you can find firmware to convert your WRT54G to a wireless ethernet bridge.   You might want to check "dd-wrt" or others.  Note that loading third party firmware into your router will void your Linksys warranty.
The other option is to but an Xbox wireless adapter, or get a Linksys wireless ethernet bridge, such as the WET200, or WET54G.
Of course, the ideal solution for gaming is to run an ethernet cable from the WRT54GS to your Xbox.  I am sure your son would love it!

  • Cascade valet m-10 with wrt54g and wap54

Hello, got a question I Read the article about cascading routers, but still unsure of how i should set up my new valet m-10
Im currently using a WRT54G as my main router connected to my modem in my home office, and a WAP54 set up as a repeater in the living Room. We have multiple devices still using Wireless G, and a few that have Wireless N so im wanting
to use the valet just for my N devices and My WRT54 & WAP54 for the G. So do I just cascade the valet off the WRT54? or should I make the Valet the main Router and cascade the G routers? the reason I have the repeater is because the wireless signal is weak in the living room and bedrooms. any ideas that could help me is appreciated thanks ~=)

If your WRT54G and WAP54G are working then you need not have disturb the connection. As well as if you want to make the WRT54G as the primary router then you can even do that. Second there are two ways to connect a Linksys router to another router:
    1. LAN to LAN – Connecting one of the Ethernet ports (LAN ports) of the second Valet router to one of the Ethernet ports (LAN ports) of the main router.
This connection makes the computers connected to both routers to be on the same LAN IP segment. This will allow sharing of resources within the network.
    2. LAN to WAN – Connecting one of the Ethernet ports (LAN ports) of the main router to the Internet port (WAN port) of the second Valet router.
This connection makes it easier to identify which router the computers are connected to since they will have different LAN IP segments. Thus, computers that are connected to router A will not be able to communicate with router B, and vice versa since they are two different networks.

  • Windows XP Pro (32-bit) and Vista Ultimate (64-bit) on the same Mac Pro HD?

Has anyone been able to install both Windows XP Pro (32-bit) and Windows Vista Ultimate (64-bit) on the same dedicated Windows hard drive? I have four HD in my Mac Pro, and one of them is dedicated for Windows (and bootable via Boot Camp). I found the following technical articles about installing Windows XP & Vista on the same hard drive (using two separate partitions) using a VMWare machine as the test system:
    http://apcmag.com/howto_dual_boot_vista_and_xp_with_vista_installed_first__the_stepbystepguide.htm

Has anyone successfully installed Windows XP (32-bit) and Vista 64-bit) on the same NTFS partition?
I already have Windows XP Pro (32-bit) SP3 installed on my single NTFS hard drive. I am looking for the best way to add the Vista 64-bit installation on the same hard drive.
Any thoughts and advise are appreciated.

Windows has its own list of boot OSs, and default, from msconfig. It will sit and wait for xx-seconds on startup in Windows if you want to boot from an alternate.
As to whether Apple's OS Switcher (aka startup disk bootcamp control panel or tray icon) sees both, I had Windows Home Premium and Ultimate 64, and pretty sure OS X saw both. That was pre-Leopard and before there were 64-bit Apple drivers.
I can't think of any scenerio of wanting to mix 32-bit and 64-bit on the same paritition, you realize you can't install the one over the other and must do a clean install.
When I added a partition out of main partition (I wanted to put search index and page file on their own partition) those partitions aren't seen - are hidden - to Leopard.

  • Problem with WRT54G and DSL NAT router

I have a WRT54G connected to a Westell DSL NAT router. I would like to be able to allow incoming connections to my FreeBSD server.
The Westell router allows me to set IP Passthrough (they call it "Single Static IP"). This gives the WRT54G the outside IP address given to the DSL router. I can then set up the WRT54G for DDNS and port forwarding to forward specific ports I want to my server.
This works, for about 2-3 days. Then, I start to randomly lose outside connectivity. Web pages start coming up with missing elements, or taking a long time to load. This will eventually lead to total loss of outgoing communication.
Normally, I would blame this on the Westell NAT router, but as I'm losing connectivity to the internet, I'm also losing connectivity to the WRT54G. It will try to load configuration pages but will be slow with missing elements, etc.
All communications between computers on my inside network continue to function properly, it's just connectivity to the WRT54G and the internet that seem to start to fail.
Does anyone have any idea what is going on? I just upgraded the firmware on the WRT54G from 1.01.1 to 1.02.0, but I don't imagine this will help.
    Thanks,
    David Chamberlain
