WRT54G and Bellsouth w/ Motorola Modem

I have a recently purchased LinkSys WRT54G that I am trying to incorporate into my home network so I can use my laptop and my desktop pn the same network. The network is Bellsouth DSL. The modems ISP address is 192.168.1.254 and the routers address is 192.168.1.1 I have tried to play around with the settings several times and haven't been able to get the net connection working through the router, although everything works, once I remove the router from the equation. If I wire the desktop directly through the modem I have access, but as soon as I connect it through the router no more connection.
I would really like to be able to get connectivity with the laptop and the desktop at the same time so any more experienced advice would be greratly appreciated. I tried setting the Motorola to Bridged internet and still couldn't get a connection. Not sure what I have done incorrectly as this is the first router I have ever set up
Thanks for your time.

This should provide some general guidance regarding the solution to your problem:
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/6323
At the above URL, note that the "WAN" port on the router is the same as the "Internet" port on your router.
The ideal solution is to set your modem into "bridge" mode.  If this cannot be done, disconnect the modem and router, then set the "Local IP address" of the router to 192.168.2.1.

  • Router conflict with Roadrunner and/or their motorola modem

I have owned a linksys router for over five years now and about 1 month ago my entire house comprised of 3 desktops one of which is wired directly to the router others are wireless, 4 laptops (wireless), 3 iphones, an xbox 360 (wireless), a ps3 (wireless), (i dont mean to flaunt but i stress the importance of a stable internet connection in a house of my size and), started hitting pings of over 2400's... there is connection but virtually no response....most sites time out before comeing up. so naturally we trouble shooted this anomaly on our own... tried connecting a computer directly to the motorola cable modem and found it in perfect working order... when on speedtest.net we saw pings around 15-20 and download speeds up to 19mbps every so often up to 25mbps but never lower. through either router new or old i see pings over 2400 with out fail and downloads areound 4mbps wihjch wouldnt be horrible if it werent for the latency.
so we figure old rounter.... got a new one. one of the linksys wrt110's and saw no improvement which was frusterating because the router was clearly the problem
so we thought for some reason the protocols within the modem itself were the problem and replaces this as well.... i have tested the signal power/strengths/frequencys with the modems as well and although my knowledge is limited to what i have learned on my own i know its well within proper ranges to function.  (it would be common sense id think seeing as how the signal is fine when not being filtered through the routers.but i tested anyway).
now i tried one other thing..and that was to instead connect the internet through my computer and thenback out into the router via a 2 ethernet cablescards andashared connection ... still no dice seeing as the internet connection was still giveing ping readings around 240. as a final resort to find whether it was routing in general that was conflicting or just the linksys routers fault for the latancy problem i connected another machine directly tomy computer via shared connection andit works perfectly but it isnt really a viable solution considering the multitude of internet hungary machines in my home.
now i know all this is rather vague but the story itself tells volumes about my problem but not really how to fix it... the only equally vague solutions i can conjure is to either 1. buy adifferant brand router ( i am rather attached to linksys afterthis length of time) or 2. find an underlying protocol or signal differance that wasnt there for almost5 year up till 1month ago. HELP me  please i just plain dont know enoughabout this and apearantly niether do many other people because i have talked with 2 linksys routertechs on phone and had timewarner cable come to my house twice aswell.. they even replaced the modem
    im plain out of ideas

If i m not wrrong, you have connected your Router to your computer and your computer to the Modem and you have shared the Internet Connection through your Computer.
Well basically you dont have to share Internet connection from your Computer, As you Router already has a NAT and it can Share the Internet connections on your other computers also.
Connect the Modem to Linksys router on Internet Port and Then connect your Computer to any available Ethernet Ports. Now you can configure your Linksys Router.
If your Internet Service Providor is Cable follow this link
If your Internet Service Providor is DSL follow this link

  • BellSouth Alcatel DSL Modem and Airport Extreme

I have a new iMac, and BellSouth DSL Internet service (alcatel modem). I get an Internet connection when connecting the modem directly to iMac using an ethernet cable. However, when I try to configure my Airport Extreme 1 of 2 things happens: a constantly blinking amber light, or a green light. In neither instance does Airport Utility see Airport Extreme (even when the light is green). I have tried powering off and recycling both Airport Extreme and the modem, with neither solving the problem. Any thoughts?

The modem is a Speed Touch Home.
wow, I used one of those 8 years ago I did not know they still being used. If I remember correctly it did not have integrated pppoe or pptp client so it requires you to run a pppoe or pptp client on your mac. Therefore when connecting it to an apple airport basestation you have to configure the pppoe client in the base station.
so open your airport utility select your base station , choose manual setup
the click the 'internet' icon in the toolbar of the airport utility window and from the connect using drop down choose PPPoE, then configure it with your isp login details. The click the update button.

  • WRT54G and Comcast Cable Modem Setup

Please help.  I just bought a LINKSYS WRT54GS and I'm trying to set up a wireless network for my laptop (No other computers on network), and my ISP is Comcast.  The model # on the Comcast Broadband Modem is DHG535-2 and the manufacturer is RCA.  The computer sees the network but only shows a local connection.  No internet.  I have tried everything and it will not let get on the internet.  I have checked all cables several times and the connections seem to be right.  I don't know where to go from here.  Can someone please help me?  I will be very grateful!
    Thanks

Is your problem related to getting on the internet in general?  Or are you able to get on the internet, but now you need to get the wireless network setup?
    1) There might be some lights on the cable modem that indicate if it is successfully connecting to the internet.  On mine(a different model/brand) I have three lights that must all be lit up to indicate I'm on the internet.  Whenever they are not all lit up, it is usually an indication that either there is a problem with comcast's network, a problem with my coaxial cables providing the Comcast service, interferance (one time they had to come out and replace some of their equipment at my apartment complex, if you have analog cable and look at the lower channels on your cables TV, 4-10,and there is lots of static, then this might be a problem, a tech told me those channels are close to the range that internet is provided on, so static on them can indicate problems that would also effect internet0, or the lights not being lit up might indicate you hagve registered that modem on their network.  There is some sort of process that you have to do when you first get comcast internet service that gets you setup on their network.  I believe it registers the MAC address of your cable modem.  If the lights are not lit up(this is where you need to refer to your cable modem manual to see what lights indicate problems), then you may need to go through this process or check with Comcast.
In my case I had a CD from comcast in the Startup Package, had to connect cable modem to my PC via USB(what a freaking pain), and then go through the software's wizard to get setup on their network.  This also installs some junk on my computer like a usb driver.  Additionally, I had a computer with two network cards, and the software would not work correctly on it(kept choosing the wrong network card.  I had to actually remove one of the cards, and then go through the wizard.
    2) You should be able to connect the cable modem directly to your computer via CAT5, to see if you can get an itnernet connection that way first.  This will at least verify that you can get on the internet before you intreduce all the other variables of the router.  If you can't get on this way.

  • WRT54G and Westell 2100

This problem may have previously been answered, but I can't find exactly my problem. I currently have a wired desktop, DSL through Bellsouth, Westell 2100
modem connected by USB. My desktop has no ethernet port.  The modem has one
ethernet connection and one usb. I bought a laptop to use in other parts of the house and a Linksys WRT54G router. I cannot access the internet from laptop wired or not, but the router has a full signal.  I switched the modem to bridged mode, but had no internet on either desktop or laptop....everything is now set back to default.
I was told I could not have internet on both at the same time. Is there a way around this?  If not, I still need to be able to access internet with wireless laptop but that's not happening either.
    Help! Someone!

you need to make sure your westell and router are configured properly. there are issues with at&t/bellsouth westell's and linksys working together properly. you can find that info over here, http://www.dslreports.com/faq/6323 i use the same exact setup you do and once i followed this, it worked perfectly. hopefully that will help you.
well, you go have fun with that.

  • Connecting WRT54G and Motorolla SBV5220

    Dear all,
I have tremendous problems having WRT54G workign after cable Motorolla router. If I connect motorolla directly via cable to the PC, there is internet. if I connect WRT54G to Motorolla unit and former to the computer, there is none, neither wired or wireless. I explored variety of tricks but nothing helped. Suspisioucly in statu IP never become a number for WRT54G. I restarted and reset WRT54G numerous times, I also changed it's IP to 192.168.2.1 in case it might a conflict with Motorolla. Nothing works
    thanks
    My WRT54G settings are default, 8.2.03 build 008, <script type="text/javascript">// Capture(month.num11) // </script> Nov. 8, 2007 , automatic DHCP

Well....you have two choices. I would recommend that you unplug your motorola modem from the electrical outlet for 20 minutes. After 20 minutes plug it back in, now try.
If that doesn't work, then clone your pc's mac address. search forum for instructions.

  • Wireless repeater using wrt54g and wap54g

i am having problems connecting my wrt54g and wap54g as wireless repeater. my setup is as follows: 1. wrt54g (192.168.1.10) is connected to a dsl provider modem/router (192.168.1.1) (dhcp server). With this setup i do not have any problems connecting my wired pc and laptop to the network. 2. on my 2nd floor the signal is faint thus i need to extend the wireless signal. 3. i have a wap54g (192.168.1.12) that i would like to repeat the signal of the wrt54g. 4. i tried the guide from the website but it was general thus there are some settings (recommended) that are missing. questions: 1. does the 2 wireless ap need to have the same SSID, channel and wep settings? 2. what should be the gateway for the wap54g? 192.168.1.1? 3. when using wifi, would i see 2 access point? or a single 1 and whoever is nearer? 4. does the wrt54g need to be a dhcp server? or the 192.168.1.1 can do that. 5. does my ideal setup be 2 AP and not 1 wireless router/ap and 1 ap? 6. can the wrt54g use wireless distribution mesh? 7. i cannot see my wrt54g from the firware downloads, mine is v7 and there are only v6 and v8? am from asia and this might be an asian version? any help would be appreciated.

what i did was the following: 1. enable wap54g as a wireless client to look for the main ssid. 2. copy the mac address to the option for wireless repeater. 3. i can now use the wap54g as a repeater. when i shut down everything and turn it on, i cannot again hook up. again, i have to do the steps above for the wap54g to act as a repeater. any idea on what the problem is? i am sure that what i am putting on the mac address is correct. even when i shut down and turn on all router and accesspoints. the connection seems lost.

  • Using WRT54G and WET11 with another router as the Gateway

I have a wired network in the house with access to the Internet through a router on the 2nd floor. I connect a ReplayTV DVR in the basement to the network with a Cat5 cable running across the floor between the DVR and a switch. I'd like to replace that with a wireless solution.
I have at my disposal one WET11 bridge and two WRT54G routers. Neither of those routers is the one connecting the house to the cable modem. Is there a way I can connect one of the WRT54G routers to a switch in the basement and have it talk to the WET11 connected to the DVR on the other side of the basement?

I made some progress, but then ran into a couple of snags. I'm not routing with the WRT54G so I connect it to a switch through one of the 4 ports that is not the one labeled Internet. The network looks like this:
    Cable Modem --> Netgear Router --> Switch --> WRT54G(port 1)
    Laptop --> WRT54G(port 4)
With that cable arrangement I was able to log in to the WRT54G's administration page from my laptop, give the WRT54G a name and change it's IP address to 192.168.1.251. I left the subnet as 255.255.255.0.I also started to configure some other settings, but I did not write them down. I was able to access the Internet from the laptop at that time.
I was also able to move the cable going from the laptop to port 4 on the WRT54G with the WET11 Ethernet Bridge and could access the Internet. And, I was able to remove the bridge, turn on the laptop's wireless capability and access the Internet through a wireless connection to the WRT54G.
I tried to access the WRT54G's admin page wirelessly, but was not able to get to the login screen. I ran out of time and set everything aside for a week. When I got back to it, I was unable to access the WRT54G's loging screen. I can still connect the laptop to port 4 on the WRT54G and reach the Internet, but I cannot do so using the bridge.
Is there some tool I can use to determine the IP address of the WRT54G? I tried resetting (using the button on the back), and I tried several IP addresses in addition to the one I'm pretty sure I used. I'm assuming that I'm trying to log in using the wrong IP address.
I have a second WRT54G that I can still log on to. However, I don't want to do anything with it until I understand what I did wrong with the first one. (Both of them are version 6.)
Another snag is that I was never able to get the setup program to find the WET11. It claimed that it couldn't find the one I had plugged into the laptop's Ethernet port, even though I was able to connect to the Internet using that bridge to the WRT54G. However, that does not work anymore.
Pointers as to what went wrong would be most appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • Connect WRT54G and WRT54GS

Hello, Hoping for some help with the following. So, in my living room, i have my comcast dual phone/cable modem, my linksys wrt54gs, and range of wireless devices (PC, PS3, Wii) We just bought an XBOX 360 today for my son's room, and i am trying to figure out how to connect the 360 online, without having to buy the Xbox or Linksys wireless adapters and without moving the modem into his room. Is it possible to connect my WRT54G wirelessly to my WRT54GS and then use ethernet from the wrt54g to the 360? Expert advice needed. Thanks in advance. Gavin

You cannot do what you described, at least not with Linksys firmware.  Linksys routers are designed to generate a wireless network, not to connect to an existing wireless network.
The function that you described is called a "wireless ethernet bridge".
One option would be to check around for third party firmware, to see if you can find firmware to convert your WRT54G to a wireless ethernet bridge.   You might want to check "dd-wrt" or others.  Note that loading third party firmware into your router will void your Linksys warranty.
The other option is to but an Xbox wireless adapter, or get a Linksys wireless ethernet bridge, such as the WET200, or WET54G.
Of course, the ideal solution for gaming is to run an ethernet cable from the WRT54GS to your Xbox.  I am sure your son would love it!

  • I have a Linksys Wrt54gs connected to a Cable modem. it w...

i have a Linksys Wrt54gs connected to a Cable modem.
it worked for about 8 months.
My kid pressed a button by accident and now it won't work.
    the router just keeps resetting.
    i unplugged everything.
conencted 1 computer, and everything is fine.
    Received DHCP address.
Once i plug in a second computer it starts rebooting.
Both computers are set to DHCP.
NO internet connection is connected at this time for troubleshooting purposes.
Nothing is connected to the ethernet port on the Linksys router (port for internet access), only 1 and 2 are connected.
i reset the router and still nothing.
i can connect 1 computer via wireless and 1 computer via direct connection and all is good. Once 2 devices are connected via direct connections it starts resetting.
i can even connect the modem to the router (for internet access), and connect to the linksys router via wireless from my computer and get internet access.
But once i direct connect 2 connections, the router starts resetting.
i have reset and reboot it with every combination i can think of.

Its good that its working now.
If it happens again, try this :
Press the reset button on the router for 30 seconds. The Power light will start flashing. Turn the Router and the Modem OFF. Turn the modem ON first, wait for 10 seconds, turn the router ON, wait for 10 seconds, you should be ONLINE !!!
Do this when the computer os connected to the router with a cable.
than on the computer open Internet Explorer and in the Address Bar type : 192.168.1.1 and hit enter.
It'll ask for the password. The default password is admin.
Once in the setup page. Click on the Wireless tab.
In there Change the Network Mode to mixed. And change the SSID to your name.
Change the Channel to 11. And Enable the SSID Broadcast.
Save the settings here. After that Click on Wireless Security and configure it accordingly and Save the settrings.
Than click on Advanced Wireless Settings. In there Disable the SES function.
What is the firmware on the router ?

  • Wirless Router and Bellsouth DSL Problems

    Hi,
I purchased the wrt54gx2 router and I have Bellsouth DSL service.  I am not very knowledgable about networks and wireless but I purchased this several months ago and I have had several friends take a look and as well as placed calls to Linksys and Bellsouth and can not get this thing to work...its becoming very frustrating.  I have a Dell PC with XP that is connected to a Westell modem and can access the internet with no problem however I go through the set up procedure and connect the PC to the WRT54 wich goes to the Westell and No internet through my PC.  My hope is to have my PC as a base and use my laptop to roam the house.
My friend that has cable ISP took my WRT54 to his house and pluged it in and was up and running to his laptop in less than 5 minutes.
There is obviously some problem between the modem and router.  I have seen talk about PPPoE, Bridge Ethernet, checkin IP address, etc, etc.
Anyone having a similar problem or can anyone please help with some advice??
    PLLLeeease!!!

There isn't usually a problem with a Bellsouth DSL... hmmm anyway in your case, how do you log in to the internet through your modem? Do you log in or do you just connect and plug and it goes? Anyway try going to start--control panel---network connections... what items are listed here?

  • Cascade valet m-10 with wrt54g and wap54

Hello, got a question I Read the article about cascading routers, but still unsure of how i should set up my new valet m-10
Im currently using a WRT54G as my main router connected to my modem in my home office, and a WAP54 set up as a repeater in the living Room. We have multiple devices still using Wireless G, and a few that have Wireless N so im wanting
to use the valet just for my N devices and My WRT54 & WAP54 for the G. So do I just cascade the valet off the WRT54? or should I make the Valet the main Router and cascade the G routers? the reason I have the repeater is because the wireless signal is weak in the living room and bedrooms. any ideas that could help me is appreciated thanks ~=)

If your WRT54G and WAP54G are working then you need not have disturb the connection. As well as if you want to make the WRT54G as the primary router then you can even do that. Second there are two ways to connect a Linksys router to another router:
    1. LAN to LAN – Connecting one of the Ethernet ports (LAN ports) of the second Valet router to one of the Ethernet ports (LAN ports) of the main router.
This connection makes the computers connected to both routers to be on the same LAN IP segment. This will allow sharing of resources within the network.
    2. LAN to WAN – Connecting one of the Ethernet ports (LAN ports) of the main router to the Internet port (WAN port) of the second Valet router.
This connection makes it easier to identify which router the computers are connected to since they will have different LAN IP segments. Thus, computers that are connected to router A will not be able to communicate with router B, and vice versa since they are two different networks.

  • Cisco wrt54g2 drops ip assigned by Motorola modem

For some reason, a couple of days from today, my Cisco wrt54g2 drops ip assigned by Motorola modem.
It gets it back after a while (10 mins) and works for another 15 minutes.
The firmware is uptodste, I just upgraded it today.
What could be causing this behavior?

Well all of a sudden it stopped doing it SO OFTEN.  Its still does it but every 3 or 5 hours or so.
Now the weird thing is that the devices dont hold on to the password for some reason.  I have 2 ipads and 2 iphones and i have to input the 26digit hex key everytime we come home and want to connect.  My macbook air seems to hold on to the password just fine though.
I just changed the cable.  But as I said, Im not sure yet if that fixes the problem because now I get internet pretty much all night from the moment i come home from the office til i fall asleep and thru next morning, and just have to release/renew dhcp lease when i come back home the next day.  So Ill know tomorrow.  Ill post back.

  • Help connecting a WRT54G to a 2Wire 2700HG modem/firewall/wireless router

I recently had to replace my DSL modem with a new 2Wire 2700HG.  I have this hard-wired setup working fine both wired and wirelessly to a laptop:
    -----phone line-----DSL Modem------ethernet cable---------PC
A friend gave me a Linksys WRT54G that I would like to hook into the setup like this: (I had never connected the wrt54G to the old modem).
    -----phone line-----DSL Modem------ethernet cable---------LINKSYS ------ ethernet cable-----------PC
I reset the WRT54G and ran the setup program, starting with the top setup and connecting and powering-up the WRT54G as instructed by the setup program.  At the end of the process the setup program tested the connection to the internet and found taht it could not connect.  The instructions were to reset the WRT54G and try again or power down the WRT54G and power it back up.  I did both of these things and still it could not acces the internet through the WRT54G (I can still access the net wirelessly through the DSL Modem.  My question is CAN this setup work, and if so, how do you set it up to get it to work?  As near as I can tell the WRT54G is not communicating with the 2700HG (DSL Modem) at all.  Help!

if the 2wire router is connected on the internet port of the wrt54g .. access the setup page of the wrt54g and go to the "status" tab..check the internet ip add...if it is 192.168.1.x , change the local ip add of the wrt54g to 192.168.2.1 .. do a power cycle and check whether it works
if not , connect the wrt54g from its ethernet port to the ethernet port of the 2wire router .. change the ip add of the wrt54g to be in the range of the ip add of the 2wire router...and disable the DHCP server of the wrt54g ..
