WRT54G and Westell 2100

This problem may have previously been answered, but I can't find exactly my problem. I currently have a wired desktop, DSL through Bellsouth, Westell 2100
modem connected by USB. My desktop has no ethernet port.  The modem has one
ethernet connection and one usb. I bought a laptop to use in other parts of the house and a Linksys WRT54G router. I cannot access the internet from laptop wired or not, but the router has a full signal.  I switched the modem to bridged mode, but had no internet on either desktop or laptop....everything is now set back to default.
I was told I could not have internet on both at the same time. Is there a way around this?  If not, I still need to be able to access internet with wireless laptop but that's not happening either.
Help! Someone!

you need to make sure your westell and router are configured properly. there are issues with at&t/bellsouth westell's and linksys working together properly. you can find that info over here, http://www.dslreports.com/faq/6323 i use the same exact setup you do and once i followed this, it worked perfectly. hopefully that will help you.
well, you go have fun with that.

  • I am FRUSTRATED! My goal is to create a wireless network using an iMac, a Westell 2100 modem (and router)

I started with a PC, the Westell 2100 modem (also a router) and the Linksys WRT54G. I set it up according to instructions I found on the Internet, and it worked fine for YEARS!!! Then, I switched to an iMac. After problems with the setup, I found help on the Internet, and got it working. It has been a long time since then, and I have had to disconnect things, and I do not remember how to set it up. I have searched the Internet, but cannot find a solution. I have searched the community, and followed some instructions here, but I have had no success. I know the following:
The Westell 2100 works as it should. I can connect directly to my computer and access the Internet.
The Linksys WRT54G has not been damaged.
At one point, I had set the SSID and had a WEP/WAP key that is HIDEOUSLY long. Here are some more tidbits: WPAPSK TKIP.

  • Problem with WRT54G and DSL NAT router

I have a WRT54G connected to a Westell DSL NAT router. I would like to be able to allow incoming connections to my FreeBSD server.
The Westell router allows me to set IP Passthrough (they call it "Single Static IP"). This gives the WRT54G the outside IP address given to the DSL router. I can then set up the WRT54G for DDNS and port forwarding to forward specific ports I want to my server.
This works, for about 2-3 days. Then, I start to randomly lose outside connectivity. Web pages start coming up with missing elements, or taking a long time to load. This will eventually lead to total loss of outgoing communication.
Normally, I would blame this on the Westell NAT router, but as I'm losing connectivity to the internet, I'm also losing connectivity to the WRT54G. It will try to load configuration pages but will be slow with missing elements, etc.
All communications between computers on my inside network continue to function properly, it's just connectivity to the WRT54G and the internet that seem to start to fail.
Does anyone have any idea what is going on? I just upgraded the firmware on the WRT54G from 1.01.1 to 1.02.0, but I don't imagine this will help.
    Thanks,
    David Chamberlain

Try setting the MTU to manual and change the value to 1450

  • Connecting WRT54G to Westell WireSpeed 6100

I absolutely cannot get my WRT54G Router to connect via my (bellsouth supplied) Westell WireSpeed 6100 Modem. Call me stupid, but I've run the setup disks for both devices tried every setup i can think of, followed all the directions and it still doesn't work. Does anyone out there know of anything I can try to fix it?
Were wireless phones ever this bad?
    Router: Linksys WRT54G
    Modem: Westell WireSpeed 6100
    ISP: DSL - Bellsouth/AT&T
    Firmware: 1.00.7

First things being First, Connect the Modem directly to the Computer.
If Online through the Westell DSL modem, check the IPADDRESS
[ start - in ' start search ' field , type cmd, press return, you get a
DOS Prompt - type ipconfig - check the IP Address for Ethernet LAN
    Connection ] and confirm whether it’s a Cable [ NAT Series ] or a DSL  -
Presumably when you are using a Modem such as Westel 2200 or
6100 Series, the IP Address will be of the range : 192.168.1.x.
Under such a scenario, Connect the Modem  / Computer to the Router,
    Press the Reset on the Router for 5- 10 Seconds ;
powercycle the Modem and the Router, Then need you have to log in
to the Router's Setup Page [ Open a browser, type http://192.168.1.1
in the Address bar of Internet Explorer ] It will prompt for Username
and Password : Leave the Username blank and type admin as the
Password ] and below Setup Tab, change it's Local IP Address to
192.168.3.1 or 192.168.5.1 .Then After powercycling the Modem and
the Router, You could connect the Computer to Port 1 or Port 2 , and
    check the Online Connectivity.
    It should work.
    * If you have a PPPoE Connection from the ISP, Get the Username
and Password from them , which has to be configured on the Router.
Recurring Issues with the Router could be fixed by Firmware Updates
Revert Back in case of any Assistance . . .

  • Westell 2100 Stopped Working

All right, I've been trying to fix this thing myself, but I've only become more confused.  I'm no computer expert, so I'll have to be walked through any suggestions if it comes to manually changing an TCP/IP or something.
I've had this Westell 2100 in my service for years with no problems, then suddenly, it stopped working!  I went through the usual, turn of the modem, wait, turn back on, hold reset button for 30 sec, etc.  But no luck.  The Ethernet light is solid green, the power is solid green, but the ready light is blinking slowly.  Apparently that means it's trying to connect, but I can leave it there for an hour with no changes.  I thought maybe it was a problem with the phone cable, so I switch to a new one.  Still no changes.
Then I came here and saw a post somewhere saying that service to Westell 2100 was discontinued?  Does that mean I'm not getting service simply because of my modem and I need to buy a new one?  I want to make sure before I go out and buy one, only to find out it won't work either.
I don't know if this means anything but, we asked Verizon to stop our landline phone.  I'm pretty sure the modem was still working for a little while afterward, but I can't remember.
Any help, please?  I miss my home internet connection.

My frist thought would also be your service disconnection. I had a simmilar experince happen with another compeny many years ago.
However if by chance that isnt the cause. Than then I would  suspect one of a few things. The top ones is ether the jack went bad(I seen this happen on a computer I worked on) or my brother had his modem go bad  despite the fact he just got it. Then of course there's the chance the line was damaged or a filter messed up(Assumming your using filters).
    Hope this helps.

  • WRT54GS and poor performance?

I've owned a WRT54GS for about 3 months, and I simply can't get any faster than 1/2 of the 54mbps standard, let alone even see the speedboost capability.
I have 3 laptops, two of which have the speedboost (afterburner) chips built in.  But even the 3rd laptop *never* goes past %50 of 54mbps.  I get to 24mbps, and there it sits.
    Any ideas?

It seems that you need to update your routers software. Anyway, if you are online hardwired to your router. Try going to www.linksys.com/connect. Download the software called Easylink Firmware Tool. Just run this software and hopefully this should assist you in upgrading your routers firmware.
If this would not work, or would fail to upgrade your router, you might need to do it manually instead. Go to www.linksys.com/downloads . Input your product model number w/c is WRT54GS and select your router version. You can find the actual version underneath the router itself on one of the stickers. Just like the image below.
Select the data labeled firmware and just save it to the main desktop page. Then open up a new web browser, type on the address bar now the numbers 192.168.1.1 (password as a default is usually admin, username just leave it blank). Then follow the instructions on the image below.
Click on browse, select the file you just downloaded, click on open and then hit the upgrade button.
NOTE: Make sure you do all of these on a hardwired PC.

  • Both WRT54G and WRT300N stop responding

At one of buildings at our church, we have had a WRT54G acting as an access point. For awhile it would require a reboot about twice a month due to lack of connectivity. About two weeks ago, it would barely function. Our staff could connect to it but connectivity would go down several times a day. After reboot it would work for an hour tops. I pulled out the WRT54G and replace with a WRT300N. The staff experienced the same problem. There are about 8 staff members that connect to the router for LAN and internet access. What could possibly cause the dramatic drop in performance? Given no network changes. When folks connect with wired Ethernet at their desks, they do not experiences any problems. There has been an iMac and an MacBook Pro added to the wireless network. Is it possible at wireless interface is sending spurious/chatty packets? How could I monitor this? An MAC address filter is used for security. No WAP or WPE password security.

try putting the following wireless settings on the router
    ssid  - any non-linksys name
    radio band - wide
    n-channel - 9
    standard channel - 11
also ensure that the router has the latest firmware on it ..

  • WRT54G and Windows 8

Just purchased a new laptop with Windows 8.  Tried to load the software for the router - WRT54G and it would not load.  Error message said it is not compatible with Windows 8.  Will there be a software upgrade or do I need to purchase a new router?

If you will be installing the router with the set up cd, it will not going to work because of the compatibility issue. What you can do instead is to manually install it. I have these links below to guide you with the manual set up for cable or DSL internet connection.

  • Wireless repeater using wrt54g and wap54g

i am having problems connecting my wrt54g and wap54g as wireless repeater. my setup is as follows: 1. wrt54g (192.168.1.10) is connected to a dsl provider modem/router (192.168.1.1) (dhcp server). With this setup i do not have any problems connecting my wired pc and laptop to the network. 2. on my 2nd floor the signal is faint thus i need to extend the wireless signal. 3. i have a wap54g (192.168.1.12) that i would like to repeat the signal of the wrt54g. 4. i tried the guide from the website but it was general thus there are some settings (recommended) that are missing. questions: 1. does the 2 wireless ap need to have the same SSID, channel and wep settings? 2. what should be the gateway for the wap54g? 192.168.1.1? 3. when using wifi, would i see 2 access point? or a single 1 and whoever is nearer? 4. does the wrt54g need to be a dhcp server? or the 192.168.1.1 can do that. 5. does my ideal setup be 2 AP and not 1 wireless router/ap and 1 ap? 6. can the wrt54g use wireless distribution mesh? 7. i cannot see my wrt54g from the firware downloads, mine is v7 and there are only v6 and v8? am from asia and this might be an asian version? any help would be appreciated.

what i did was the following: 1. enable wap54g as a wireless client to look for the main ssid. 2. copy the mac address to the option for wireless repeater. 3. i can now use the wap54g as a repeater. when i shut down everything and turn it on, i cannot again hook up. again, i have to do the steps above for the wap54g to act as a repeater. any idea on what the problem is? i am sure that what i am putting on the mac address is correct. even when i shut down and turn on all router and accesspoints. the connection seems lost.

  • I just bought a router WRT54G and a Compact wireless-G

i just bought a router WRT54G and a  Compact wireless-G and by the time to connect them it seems that both things work correctly but there are two icons that show if u are connect to the internet, so here is the problem one icon says that my connection is excellent, but the other ones says that my connectivity is limited or there is not connectivity at all.
What should i do to fix that problem i've tried everything i think but nothing happened?

Is the "limited connectivity" icon the icon for your ethernet card (which presumably is not plugged in, and therefore has no connectivity) ?  If so, then this icon is reporting its connection correctly.  You do not need to fix it.

  • Using WRT54G and WET11 with another router as the Gateway

I have a wired network in the house with access to the Internet through a router on the 2nd floor. I connect a ReplayTV DVR in the basement to the network with a Cat5 cable running across the floor between the DVR and a switch. I'd like to replace that with a wireless solution.
I have at my disposal one WET11 bridge and two WRT54G routers. Neither of those routers is the one connecting the house to the cable modem. Is there a way I can connect one of the WRT54G routers to a switch in the basement and have it talk to the WET11 connected to the DVR on the other side of the basement?

I made some progress, but then ran into a couple of snags. I'm not routing with the WRT54G so I connect it to a switch through one of the 4 ports that is not the one labeled Internet. The network looks like this:
    Cable Modem --> Netgear Router --> Switch --> WRT54G(port 1)
    Laptop --> WRT54G(port 4)
With that cable arrangement I was able to log in to the WRT54G's administration page from my laptop, give the WRT54G a name and change it's IP address to 192.168.1.251. I left the subnet as 255.255.255.0.I also started to configure some other settings, but I did not write them down. I was able to access the Internet from the laptop at that time.
I was also able to move the cable going from the laptop to port 4 on the WRT54G with the WET11 Ethernet Bridge and could access the Internet. And, I was able to remove the bridge, turn on the laptop's wireless capability and access the Internet through a wireless connection to the WRT54G.
I tried to access the WRT54G's admin page wirelessly, but was not able to get to the login screen. I ran out of time and set everything aside for a week. When I got back to it, I was unable to access the WRT54G's loging screen. I can still connect the laptop to port 4 on the WRT54G and reach the Internet, but I cannot do so using the bridge.
Is there some tool I can use to determine the IP address of the WRT54G? I tried resetting (using the button on the back), and I tried several IP addresses in addition to the one I'm pretty sure I used. I'm assuming that I'm trying to log in using the wrong IP address.
I have a second WRT54G that I can still log on to. However, I don't want to do anything with it until I understand what I did wrong with the first one. (Both of them are version 6.)
Another snag is that I was never able to get the setup program to find the WET11. It claimed that it couldn't find the one I had plugged into the laptop's Ethernet port, even though I was able to connect to the Internet using that bridge to the WRT54G. However, that does not work anymore.
Pointers as to what went wrong would be most appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • Connect WRT54G and WRT54GS

Hello, Hoping for some help with the following. So, in my living room, i have my comcast dual phone/cable modem, my linksys wrt54gs, and range of wireless devices (PC, PS3, Wii) We just bought an XBOX 360 today for my son's room, and i am trying to figure out how to connect the 360 online, without having to buy the Xbox or Linksys wireless adapters and without moving the modem into his room. Is it possible to connect my WRT54G wirelessly to my WRT54GS and then use ethernet from the wrt54g to the 360? Expert advice needed. Thanks in advance. Gavin

You cannot do what you described, at least not with Linksys firmware.  Linksys routers are designed to generate a wireless network, not to connect to an existing wireless network.
The function that you described is called a "wireless ethernet bridge".
One option would be to check around for third party firmware, to see if you can find firmware to convert your WRT54G to a wireless ethernet bridge.   You might want to check "dd-wrt" or others.  Note that loading third party firmware into your router will void your Linksys warranty.
The other option is to but an Xbox wireless adapter, or get a Linksys wireless ethernet bridge, such as the WET200, or WET54G.
Of course, the ideal solution for gaming is to run an ethernet cable from the WRT54GS to your Xbox.  I am sure your son would love it!

  • WRT54G and IP Address of Connected Devices

An HP laser printer and a DLink network drive are among the various devices connected to my network via a WRT54G and an eight port switch. Every now and then the IP addresses for these two devices change. With respect to the printer, this means I cannot depend on reliably printing something and  I periodically have to delete the printer and reinstalli it on the various computers. This also presents a problem with the DLink drive because when the address changes the mapping of it as a lettered drive on each computer is no longer valid.
How can I fix the IP addresses of these network devices so it does not change?

Set static IP addresses on the devices. You can't change it on the WRT.
(unless your WRT54G has a firmware which has a dhcp reservation function in the web interface, but think the WRT54G is too old for that. For that it would be helpful to know which model & version you have exactly as printed on the label underneath the router and which firmware version you are running as shown in the web interface).

  • Cascade valet m-10 with wrt54g and wap54

Hello, got a question I Read the article about cascading routers, but still unsure of how i should set up my new valet m-10
Im currently using a WRT54G as my main router connected to my modem in my home office, and a WAP54 set up as a repeater in the living Room. We have multiple devices still using Wireless G, and a few that have Wireless N so im wanting
to use the valet just for my N devices and My WRT54 & WAP54 for the G. So do I just cascade the valet off the WRT54? or should I make the Valet the main Router and cascade the G routers? the reason I have the repeater is because the wireless signal is weak in the living room and bedrooms. any ideas that could help me is appreciated thanks ~=)

If your WRT54G and WAP54G are working then you need not have disturb the connection. As well as if you want to make the WRT54G as the primary router then you can even do that. Second there are two ways to connect a Linksys router to another router:
    1. LAN to LAN – Connecting one of the Ethernet ports (LAN ports) of the second Valet router to one of the Ethernet ports (LAN ports) of the main router.
This connection makes the computers connected to both routers to be on the same LAN IP segment. This will allow sharing of resources within the network.
    2. LAN to WAN – Connecting one of the Ethernet ports (LAN ports) of the main router to the Internet port (WAN port) of the second Valet router.
This connection makes it easier to identify which router the computers are connected to since they will have different LAN IP segments. Thus, computers that are connected to router A will not be able to communicate with router B, and vice versa since they are two different networks.
Here is the link for the configuration - http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?pid=93&login=1&vw=1&app=search&articleid=3733&userrole=Linksy...
