WRT54g at a loss.....

Well, after a long storage hibernation, i got internet at the new home and hooked up the ol'e wrt54g, did a master reset and back to the factory defaults. My wired connection works great, but no wireless. The router see's the wireless computers, and I even got it to work with some tweeked settings in advanced wireless without security. As soon as I try and implement WEP or WSA, NO GO. None of the laptops in the house can use the net, yet they are connected and show a strong signal to the router, I have played with this thing all day and would like any suggestions.......... I have read every step by step setup I can find, im using the encrypted keys for the security settings but no internet for wireless...Help please
Solved!
Go to Solution.

Try to upgrade the firmware on your router.
Connect the computer with the Ethernet cable to the router.
Download the latest firmware from Linksys website and save it on your computer. Open the setup page of the router. Click on Administration tab and go to Firmware upgrade sub tab. Browse the firmware file that you have already downloaded and upgrade it on your router.
After upgrading the firmware on the router, it is recommended that you should reset the router and reconfigure it. Press and hold the reset button on the router for 30 seconds. Release the reset button and wait for 10 seconds. Power cycle the router and reconfigure it.
Change the wireless settings. Change the SSID to create a new wireless network. Change the wireless channel to 11.
Change the security mode to WPA personal. Enter the password for the wireless network.
Now try to connect to the new wireless network on your laptop.
If it is connected to the wireless network then check the IP address on your wireless computer.
How many wired and wireless computers do you have?
Who is your Internet service provider?

  • WRT54G v6 packet loss, plz help!

I have a WRT54G V6 router with 1.01.1 latest firmware. I've noticed that after about 2 days of use, the router starts dropping massive packets. it's on a cable modem feed. What i normally do afterwards, is reset the router (unplug the power cable, plug it back in) and all is well, no more packet loss. I'm not sure what causes this or if the router itself is defective. This is the 3rd time this happened to me and not sure what to do.
    Packets: Sent = 1210, Received = 258, Lost = 952 (78% loss)
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 16ms, Maximum = 338ms, Average = 5ms
The above is what i got before rebooting the router.
    After rebooting:
    Packets: Sent = 162, Received = 162, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
pproximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 16ms, Maximum = 176ms, Average = 22ms
Took it offline for 15 seconds, plugged it back in and now it's all good. Zero packet loss.
I've also disabled it's wireless capabilities, since I do not use/need wireless, but dont' think this matters.

    Hi…….
Well in this case first reset the router by holding and pressing the reset on the back panel for 30seconds. Then reconfigure the router again.
And as you are not using the wireless connection you may disable the wireless connection for the router. Also what you can do is log into the setup page of the router with http:// 192.168.1.1 username leave blank and the password is admin. And on the setup screen lower the MTU to 1396 and then power cycle the whole network. [unplug and reconnect them back in a proper order ]

  • WRT54G intermitent signal loss

Hi, we have been using the WRT54G for a while now, with one wireless desktop, one wireless laptop, and one wired desktop. We have had few problems until recently, when we added another wireless laptop to the network. The problem is that about 3-5 times a day, the network becomes unaccessible. It doesn't work for any of the computers, including the wired desktop. It appears completely random though, because sometimes we wake up in the morning and it isn't working, when none of us have been using our computers. We are using the newest firmware, encrypted with WPA, on channel 6. The only thing we have discovered that fixes the problem is unplugging the router and plugging it back in. (reseting doesn't work) This gets very annoying, as I game, and do server work on some of the computers. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Don't laugh too hard-had the same prob when I used to use a cable tv broadband modem but havn't had it since switching to DSL (thanks, wife).  Got to the point that I put the wireless and cable modem pwr supplies on a 6way pwr strip and trained the wife to reset EVERYTHING when problem happened...also recently upgraded all machines to xp sp2 (yuck) and updated firmware of router to current

  • Have to reset WRT54G after a power loss

    Hi,
I have a WRT54G ver 2 running firmware version 4.21.1.  "Keep Alive" is enabled for the PPoE connection to my provider.
    My two problems:
    1) Anytime I encounter a power loss I have to reset the router and then of course reconfigure it.  In the past, I never had to do this whenever there was a loss of power.
    2) In a related problem, I cannot use the wireless print server.  As soon as I get it configured and working other PCs on my network lose internet connectivity.  That forces me to reset the the router, which forces me to reconfigure the wireless print server, and the sysle begins again!
Is it possible the ver of firmware I'm running is the issue or do I have a faulty router?

Routers seem to be sensitive to electrical surges and noise. This can cause them to loose their settings. You should keep your router plugged into a high quality surge suppressor with EMI/RFI filtering, such as the Belkin SurgeMaster Gold Series.  EMI/RFI filtering is required.  A surge suppressor alone is not enough because surge suppression does not start until the voltage exceeds 330 volts. Alternatively, most UPS devices have both surge suppression and EMI/RFI filtering.
If this does not prevent your router from "forgetting" its settings, then the router is malfunctioning, and it should be replaced. A router that forgets its settings is not secure.

  • Problems with connecting to internet after power loss w WRT54G v3

I'm having problems connecting to the internet after a power loss with my WRT54G v3 wireless router.  I'm at the latest firmware version (4.21.1).
I found similar problems with the V2 version of this router.
After a power failure, I can access the http interface to the router, all of my settings are there (not set to factory settings),the unit is connected to my ISP provider,I can ping from the router, but none of my wired or wireless PCs can ping.
To "fix" this condition, I have to reset to factory settings, then re-load my saved configuration. This usually works, but sometimes I have to hard reset the unit.
Anyone having this problem? Anyone have a fix?

Sudden loss of power for extended periods of time will 9x out of 10 will corrupt the saved configurations and can only be fixed in the way you already described.
A solution for this is getting an UPS incase of a power failure your equipment will be on battery back up until either the battery runs out or power is restored (depending on the model changed the battery time)

  • PB G4 to WRT54G Ping Times with Packet Loss!!???

This morning when I woke up my PB G4, my Airport couldn't find my network. Found out that my father had turned off the modem and router because his Dell, which is wired to the router, had slow connection to the network (10 MB/ps or less, I think). I tried using Internet Connect using the assigned Network name and entering the WPA Personal password with no luck. So I then reset the router, configured to it's original settings and my fathers Dell got a better connection but my PB has gotten slower in connecting to sites and the page loading is considerably slower. Looked at iStumbler and it shows a lower signal and now it's showing noise, where before there was none. I ran a ping test to the router and got this.
    --- 192.168.1.1 ping statistics ---
100 packets transmitted, 98 packets received, 2% packet loss
    round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 1.536/2.495/26.476/3.414 ms
The router is a WRT54G v5 with the latest firmware that I had just reflashed.

I reset my router, changed the channel to 11 and disabled the SSID. That setting got a better but still iffy ping time with no noise.
I tried your suggestion and got this, along with some noise.
    --- 192.168.1.1 ping statistics ---
100 packets transmitted, 99 packets received, 1% packet loss
    round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 1.596/4.201/33.784/6.652 ms
    Any other ideas?

  • WRT54G v7 losses speed from 90Mb/s to 10Mb/s

I have Internet connection with speed 100Mb/s. Actual speed is approx 90Mb/s when connecting directly. But when connecting through router WRT54G v7 speed is lost, then it is approx 10Mb/s. How it can be fixed? What is the problem?
I use wired connection. I switched off wireless option. I switched off and on the router. Used another cable. But all this did not give me positive results. I tried to find in router settings (192.168.1.1) any constraints but did not find.

  • WRT54G Problem with connectivity loss

Unit is 4 months old. ALL lights work. Used w/ Comcast Cable. Every 10 mins I lose total wireless function. I pull the pwr jack & it comes back up. It will not come back up unless I repower the unit. Cable box is certified ok. This is driving me out of my mind. It won't stay up long enough to write an email any more. It is 15 ft from my laptops. Other folks we know have them in their attic & they work all the way to the basement, so that is not a problem. This began about 6 weeks ago. We have Apple & Windows XP laptops & have the same problem on ALL units. It works fantastic until it goes out. PLEASE HELP ! ? ! ? !

If you have any wired computers, open the setup page, 192.168.1.1, and go to wireless link
under wireless we have a link for advanced wireless settings.
    change Beacon interval to 75
and also checkif you are using the upgraded firmware.
and also check whe you lose internet connetion is the power light blinking?
if yes, we might have to reset the router.
    regards,
    appu.

  • WRT54G V5 Port Forwarding Configuration Loss

    Hi All...
Having a strange issue with my router item listed above. I go into the router and forward a list of about 12 ports for online gaming (in order to improve my NAT to "open"). Everything works fine for about ten minutes and then my NAT goes from Open to Moderate, which presents a whole slew of issues (bans you from certain servers, inhibits the use of voice with certain users on xbox 360 etc etc). A moderate NAT is bad for 360.
So... I go into my router to check that the settings are there and they indeed are and using a diagnostic tool shows the ports are no longer open. So... apparently the linksys box has altered the configuration somehow that is not present in the GUI. If I save the settings again it does not reopen the ports so I am forced to restore the configuration file I created just after making the port forwards for the first time.
So... The box reboots and the ports open back up... until about ten minutes pass and the ports close down once again. So in a nutshell, the configuration of my router is changing on its own and I don't know how to stop it. (Its alive!!!! hahha).
Does anyone out there have any experience with this or the technical knowledge to assist? Linksys tech support and xbox tech support has been..... well.... not so helpful.
Thank you for your time (sorry for the long post!)
    Brad G.

well.....change the MTU settings to 1365 and enable DMZ instead of port forwarding.....ensure that the x-box has a static ip add and dns address....
also, check the firmware on the router...if it is below v 1.01.1 , upgrade the firmware on the router...reset the router and reconfigure then

  • Problem with WRT54G and DSL NAT router

I have a WRT54G connected to a Westell DSL NAT router. I would like to be able to allow incoming connections to my FreeBSD server.
The Westell router allows me to set IP Passthrough (they call it "Single Static IP"). This gives the WRT54G the outside IP address given to the DSL router. I can then set up the WRT54G for DDNS and port forwarding to forward specific ports I want to my server.
This works, for about 2-3 days. Then, I start to randomly lose outside connectivity. Web pages start coming up with missing elements, or taking a long time to load. This will eventually lead to total loss of outgoing communication.
Normally, I would blame this on the Westell NAT router, but as I'm losing connectivity to the internet, I'm also losing connectivity to the WRT54G. It will try to load configuration pages but will be slow with missing elements, etc.
All communications between computers on my inside network continue to function properly, it's just connectivity to the WRT54G and the internet that seem to start to fail.
Does anyone have any idea what is going on? I just upgraded the firmware on the WRT54G from 1.01.1 to 1.02.0, but I don't imagine this will help.
    Thanks,
    David Chamberlain

Try setting the MTU to manual and change the value to 1450

  • A sudden loss of connectivity...

Since February of 2008 I have had my network configured to allow me to send large files from work to home via DAV, DAVS, SFTP, FTPS and FTP (I enjoy tinkering with my set up). About a month ago everything came to an abrupt end and I have not been able to get it up and unning again, so here I am, hoping there will be some insight from you. My set up is as follows:
I use a DynDns URL (epconnect.dyndns.org) which correctly resolves to 98.224.193.135 to keep connected. If you want to try to check the connecions I have a test folder set up for FTP for user: test / Password: 20test09 and a folder set up or DAV using directory: DAVTest / user: test / Password: 20test09. I will watch for activity on these folders and keep them open for a month or so.
COMPUTERS I USED AS SERVERS IN TESTS:
    Macintosh 01 - OS X 10.5.6 / Static IP 192.168.1.136 / PPC
    Macintosh 02 - OS X 10.5.6 / Static IP 192.168.1.137 / Intel
    ROUTERS I USED IN TESTS:
    Linksys WRT54G 01 V. 6 - Firmware V. 1.02.6
    Linksys WRT54G 02 V. 6 - Firmware V. 1.02.5
General network settings - Subnet 255.255.255.0 / Router address 192.168.1.1 / Apache 2.2.9 / httpd.conf file altered to allow WebDav / Web sharing enabled / File Sharing (FTP) enabled
All of the following tests were run both with and without the Macintosh firewall enabled, the results were the same in each case.
    Tested http://localhost on Macintosh (01 and 02) in browser * - CONNECTED
Tested IP http://192.168.1.(136 and 137) in browser * - CONNECTED
Tested IP http://98.224.193.135 in browser * - FAILED
Tested IP http://epconnect.dyndns.org in browser * - FAILED
Tested IP ftp://192.168.1.(136 and 137) in browser * - CONNECTED
Tested IP ftp://98.224.193.135 in browser * - FAILED
Tested IP ftp://epconnect.dyndns.org in browser * - FAILED
Tested FTP for 192.168.1.(136 and 137) in CyberDuck ** - CONNECTED
Tested FTP for 98.224.193.135 in CyberDuck ** - FAILED
Tested FTP for epconnect.dyndns.org in CyberDuck ** - FAILED
Tested DAV for 192.168.1.(136 and 137) in CyberDuck ** - CONNECTED
Tested DAV for 98.224.193.135 in CyberDuck ** - FAILED
Tested DAV for epconnect.dyndns.org in CyberDuck ** - FAILED
At one point, just to test my router port forwarding, I enabled DMZ and forwarded ALL ports to 192.168.1.136 and 192.168.1.137 respectively but there was no difference in the results from the individual port forwards.
The Ping tests run on 192.168.1.136, 192.168.1.137, 98.224.193.135, and epconnect.dyndns.org all connected with no packet loss BUT in one case I forgot and had the ports forwarded to the Mac that I had TURNED OFF but still received a PASS! ***? I am guessing that Ping is worthless as a test to see if the site is responding because of this.
I ran a port scan from the DynDns.com Open Port Tool and all of the ports returned as OPEN using both epconnect.dyndns.org and 98.224.193.135. However I used the Macintosh utility Network Tool and ran a port scan from 21 to 443 (the only ones I need) for both epconnect.dyndns.org and 98.224.193.135 and both of the tests timed out returning NO OPEN PORTS.
I reset the Comcast Cable Modem (Arris TM502G/CT) with the CAT5 cable, the power cord, and the coaxial cable disconnected by pressing and holding the reset button on the modem for 20 seconds, waiting for all of the lights to come back on, then reattaching the router (NO CHANGE).
In desperation I reinstalled OS X on Macintosh 01 from scratch and reconfigured all of my settings but I STILL cannot get epconnect.dyndns.org to connect to FTP, SFTP, FTPS, DAV, or DAVS. Not even my test homepage will come up in the browser.
The following is an excerpt from Comcast:
I understand you have questions about which ports are blocked on the
Comcast network. I have included the current list of blocked ports for
    you below:
    67
    68
    135
    137
    138
    139
    445
    512
    520
    1080
I am unsure what I could be missing. I spoke to Comcast a few minutes ago and they state again that they are not blocking th ports and there have been no changes in my service that could account or this. I also sent an email to DynDns.com and nothing is wrong on their end. I can't recall anything I changed on my Macs except for any recent upgrades from apple and I reset the routers back to factory spec and reentered all of the port routing by hand.
    * Tested in browsers IE 7 and Safari 4 with a Dell PC and Firefox 3 and Safari 4 on a Macintosh.
** Tested FTP and DAV connectivity with EngInSite DataFreeway 2 on the PC and Cyberduck 3 on the Macintosh.
    * I didn't bother testing FTPS or DAVS since the self signed certificate I use is for epconnect.dyndns.org and wont work on the local network.

    Bump.
    Any ideas?
This is a particular problem with users based in distant territories, e.g. South Africa. Our FMS is based in the UK.
I would imagine the number of hops in the connection is a big factor in this. Are there recommended FMS settings for this kind of scenario?

  • WRT54G V8 - no connection - All Lights on SOLID all of a sudden

My WRT54G has worked fine for the last few months but all of a sudden our laptop lost its internet connection. When I went to look at the router it had 5 solid lights, 1,2,3,4 and internet. It doesn't matter what cables are plugged in, those light will always be on. even if it is just the power it is only those lights, and the power light seems to be on but it is dim, definitely not even 1/2 as bright as the others. The lights are on solid, not blinking, and are on from the second I put the power cable in. This happened all of a sudden, I was not doing anything out of the ordinary. I can't find any solution for it. I have reset it (pushing the reset button for 30 seconds) and it is the same situation. When I type in 192.168.1.1 in my browser - "Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at 192.168.1.1." ; so my computer cannot even communicate with the router. I am at a loss on what to do. I have a wired router that I am using now that is working just fine. Does anyone have any ideas what happened here? Thanks!

When all the light are on, there's something wrong with the router. Reset it for 30 seconds. If there's no change, unplug/replug the power cord and reset it again. If you have the same results and your router is less than a year old, call them for a replacement.
The box said windows xp or better... So I installed Linux!

  • WRT54GS v6 dropping packets on outgoing non-http ports

Hi, I'm having a strange issue with my WRT54GS. When I try connecting to outgoing ports other than 80 (for example ftp, VNC, proxy...), I get erratic behavior from the router. Sometimes the connection works sometimes it doesn't.
Here are some more specific examples:
    1. When using a proxy (port 50000+) and loading a webpage, some items appear, some don't. I have to reload the page several times for the whole thing to appear.
    2. When connecting to an ftp server (with Filezilla client) I get "connection aborted" messages and have to retry 4 or 5 times for it to work.
    3. Regular http browsing works fine.
    4. Sometimes everything works as it should for a small stretch (30-60 seconds) then the problem re-appears.
Here are some of the things I've tried and their outcomes:
    1. Upgraded router to the latest firmware (1.52.5): same behavior.
    2. Did a hard reset, waited 2 minutes, rebooted, re-uped the firmware, rebooted, reconfigured the router: Worked fine for 2 minutes, then same problem.
    3. Tried playing around with various settings (Upnp, MTU): same behavior.
    4. Reboot the router: Works fine for 30-60 seconds then same behavior.
    4. Connected my laptop directly to the internet (no router): everything works perfectly, no error whatsoever.
I am quite baffled at what is happening, I have no idea what to do next. I've thought about upgrading to custom firmware as a last resort (micro dd-wrt) but I'd really prefer keeping the current settings and have things work.
    Thanks!

A few more things I want to add:
    - The behavior is the same for all netwoked computers, wireless or wired.
    - I can ping an external host (ex. google.com) for a long period with 0% loss
    - I have quite a few ports being forwarded to various computers across the network
    - This thing is driving me nuts!!

  • WRT54G - wireless just stopped working on all devices

    Hi All,
I've had my WRT54G for a couple of years and have my Desktop hard wired (to the router) and 2 laptops and an ipod connecting wirelessly succefully for the past 2 years.Woke up this morning and nothing will connect wirelessly, finding the router is intermitent and when it does it cannot establish a connection with it. I can connect the devices via the network cable directly to the router and all works fine, it's just wireless that has suddenly stopped working.
I have tried 'turning it off and on again" turning WEP off, changing WEP password etc. but nothing seems to work. Im at a loss as to why my entire wireless network/connection has just stopped working?
    Any ideas?

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I'm having a similar problem. This past month or so, the router just kicks my wireless computers off the network. Then I can't find the network at all. My work around has been to go into the wireless setting (via my hard-wired computer) and change the wireless channel from 9 to 11 or vice versa. This keeps the network connected for a day or two and then kicks us off again until I change the channel.
I've looked into the solution previously posted of upgrading the Firmware but I'm having a difficult time doing so. I'm on a Mac and the firmware downloads seem to be for PC. The other problem I'm having is that my model is WRT54GS (no version number). Should I assume this is version 1.0? I think so. Anyway, like I said, when I download the firmware for that unit, it shows up as a bin file (WRT54GSv3_4.71.4.001_fw,3.bin). I then expand it and it becomes a cpgz file (WRT54GSv3_4.71.4.001_fw,3.bin.cpgz). And back and forth, over and over again.
How can I upgrade my firmware on my Mac?
    PS> Current Firmware Version: v2.07.1

  • Receive ping throw WRT54G setup but cannot display web-pages.

    Hi
I have a WRT54G router, connected to the same DSL modem for 4 years and everything was fine till last week. Since last week, i cannot display any web pages, despite the fact that i am connected to my ISP (it was checked with there support team).
I have 3 different laptops and 1 desktop with different browsers and different  OS (XP, VISTA)  on them and same antivirus (AVAST!).
I receive pings from all the laptops and desktop to the router (ping 192.168.1.1), which mean that they connect probably to the router
I was able to receive ping from different websites throw the router setup (192.168.1.1) under "Administrator" tab and then under "diagnostic" tab, But I cannot display any web pages.
Does any one might know what may be the problem?
    Thank you.

Thank you for the quick respond.
I connect the computer directly to the modem and it work just fine.
When I ping throw command prompt in the computer (connected to the router) I receive the next massage  "bla bla bla o recevie bla bla 5 packet loss or something".
I was able to receive ping from different websites throw the router setup (192.168.1.1) under "Administration" tab and then under "diagnostic" tab.
The problem was solved yesterday by updating the firmware and reseting the router with the reset button.
     Very wired.
Anyone have any idea what may was the problem?
