WRT54G: can't access a particular range of internet IP addresses

We have a WRT54G (hardware v6) which we have used for a couple years in conjunction with a cable modem to make a home wifi network. In the past few days, we've been unable to access any sites in the IP range 130.160.x.x (that is, those at The University of Alabama). A particular example is ua.edu (130.160.4.131). The rest of the internet works fine.
This is on Ubuntu 12.04, Windows 7, or Android ICS; with Chrome, Firefox, IE9, or SSH. If I connect the modem to an Ubuntu laptop directly by USB, I can get to ua.edu just fine.
I tried resetting the router to factory defaults, upgrading the firmware, connecting via ethernet rather than wifi, and using the Google DNS servers 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 in the router, but the problem persists. Naturally, UA's helpdesk, Comcast, and Linksys were all either useless, helpless, or uncooporative.
Traceroute looks like this:
tsbertalan@hustlenbustle:~$ traceroute ua.edu
traceroute to ua.edu (130.160.4.131), 30 hops max, 60 byte packets

Any ideas?
Solved!
Go to Solution.

Interesting, but that seemed to be unconclusive for them. Anyway, the fact that, for that asker, only one computer behind the router was having problems (whereas for me all computers behind the router are having problems) suggests that the problem is different.
FWIW:
tsbertalan@hustlenbustle:~$ telnet cs.ua.edu 80
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection timed out
C/V:
tsbertalan@hustlenbustle:~$ ping ua.edu
PING ua.edu (130.160.4.131) 56(84) bytes of data.
(after 5 minutes, this is still all it says)
However, from a different server (in California):
tsbertalan@boogeyman ~ $ ping ua.edu
PING ua.edu (130.160.4.131) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 130.160.4.131: icmp_req=1 ttl=238 time=112 ms
(etc.)
And also:
tsbertalan@boogeyman ~ $ ssh bama.ua.edu

  • Can't access one particular secure page

I can access any secure page I try to except the log in page to our web hosting company. I click the link from their home page and just get a new, blank window in Safari. It doesn't work in FireFox or Opera either.
Anybody got any ideas how to solve this?
    Running 10.5.2 on MacBook.
    Thanks.

Hello stpaul_tim. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
To rule out the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) as the cause, if you connect your computer directly to your folks's cable modem, can you access this site now?
If so, then the AEBS's DNS settings may be incorrect. By default both of the ISP's DNS servers should be listed on the AirPort Utility's Internet > Internet Connection tab. Check to see if these are the correct ones provided by their ISP. These should also be the same ones your computer would have received when it was directly connected to the modem.
If they are not the correct ones, enter the proper ones, and then, after resetting the AEBS try connecting to that particular website.
If you are still unsuccessful, try using one of the free DNS services, like OpenDNS. Use their DNS server IP addresses instead of the ones provided by the ISP.

  • Can't Access One Particular Site

OK, I'll admit up front that this question might not really be an airport question (but, then again it might be).
I'm trying to access the website http://www.puzzlepirates.com/ from my folks home, on a wireless network using an airport extreme router. I can't access the site. I can access every other site that I try. I've tried on three different computers (same network), so I don't believe that the problem is related to the computer.
I've contacted two friends who are able to access the site just fine from their computers/internet connections.
I've called my parents ISP (multiple times), one of the people I spoke to, told me that they could access the site, two other told me that they couldn't. One customer service person I spoke to, said it can't be the ISP that is the problem, because they are using a different ISP and they can't access it. All of them pretty much said that it has nothing to do with them.
Is there any chance that the problem is in my parents airport router?
If not, any ideas where to turn in resolving this problem?
    Thanks,
    Tim Erickson

We are new users trying to access games. We are getting an error about an invalid address or no address or something similar. Can someone tell us how to get into the games.

You can't access what games?  Where can you not access these games. Where are you seeing this error message?  What exactly does it say?

  • Can't Access iPhoto Library From Mail, Internet

When i go to upload a picture on a website like Facebook I'm unable to access my iphoto library. The menus for the finder in safari will slither down and I'll navigate to my photos but when i get to the iphoto icon it looks faded and will not respond to being clicked on. Is there anyway to bypass this problem. THANKS!

There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
For 10.5 users: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use THIS
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto. With 10.5 you can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • How can we access the logged in SSO user email address in websheet app

Is there any way where we can find the email address of the logged in SSO user, do we have any variables which we can use and if so how can we use in our websheet application?
could any please guide me on this
    thanks
    srinivas p.

You can't access it directly. But your applet can make net connections to the server, and the server can provide that kind of functionality. Generally this is easiest by making HTTP connections and having the server provide the functionality via the web server. (So in your case, JSPs or servlets on the server would list/deliver/create/modify/delete files, and the applets would invoke those JSPs and servlets.

  • I can't access my account as the e mail address I used no longer exists!

I am unable to access my account as the e mail address I used no longer exists, so I set up a new account hoping I link to my old account!! Plus my original laptop was stolen!

You can't link/merge accounts, all content will remain tied to the account that downloaded it.
Why can't you access the account ? If you've forgotten its password then you can reset it via http://iforgot.apple.com e.g. by answering the account's security questions.
If you can't get it reset via that page, and you don't have a rescue email address on the account for the reset email to go to,  then try contacting Support in your country, they should be able to reset it for you.

  • Can not access .mac mail thru shared internet connection

    I own a powerbook G4.
I recently purchased a mac mini for home. It is connected to a cable modem via ethernet.
I am connecting the powerbook to the internet using internet sharing via airport thru the mini - no problems.
I am, however, unable to connect to my .mac mail from the powerbook.
    The following message is displayed:
-There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Check the settings for account ".Mac Account" or try again.
The server error encountered was: The connection to the server "mail.mac.com" on port 993 timed out.
I am able to check mail from the mini.
    What am I doing wrong?
It was working earlier, and it DOES work if I reverse the config and connect my powerbook to the cable modem ... weird.
    Any help would be appreciated.

The server error encountered was: The connection to
    the
server "mail.mac.com" on port 993 timed out.
Port 993 indicates Use SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is
selected for the .Mac SMTP server which I didn't
believe is supported with a .Mac account and when
selected, I'm not sure why it is working when
connected direct to the Cable modem and not
    otherwise.
Go to Mail > Preferences > Accounts and under the
Advanced tab for your .Mac account preferences,
deselect Use SSL and the incoming mail server port
will change from 993 to 143 which is the standard
incoming mail server port for a .Mac or IMAP type
    account.
    Still does not work.
    Port 143 times out.
Both computers accessing the same .mac account - is this a problem?
All other aspects of the wireless network function. Just no email (in or out) on the powerbook connected via airport.
Reset both machines several times as well.
    Thanks in advance ...

  • Can't access 1 website

I can't access a particular website with my Linksys WRT54g router in line, but can do so if I hook my mac directly to the ISP's modem.  I have checked the firmware of the router and it is up to date.  This is happening with only one website. It happens on multiple browsers. Using an imac with OSX 10.8. Any suggestions?  Thanks

As per the scenario you explained that you have an issue with Accessing one Website and the firmware is updated...  But after upgrading the Router did you reset the Router... So in that case follow the following step for resetting the Router:
    30/30/30 Hard Reset
The following procedure will clear out the NVRAM and set Router back to default values:
With the unit powered on, press and hold the reset button on back of unit for 30 seconds
Without releasing the reset button, unplug the unit and hold reset for another 30 seconds
Plug the unit back in STILL holding the reset button a final 30 seconds....
Then reconfigure the Router once again as per the ISP ( Internet Service Provider ) setup... Then open the setup page, change the MTU to 1400 from Auto...
If there is any anti-virus or firewall disable them all as well...
Certainly these settings will help you....

  • Can't access the web-site in my home folder from the internet.  Need help.

I am trying to publish a website from the Sites folder in my home directory. The website is made and I can access it from from every computer within my ethernet. But despite a couple attempts I made I can not get the website published on the internet.
I have an Airport Express station. Two Macs and one PC are using the ethernet. As far as I can tell the Airport Express station is directly connected to the internet. I live in a brand new apartment which has Lan outlets in every room next to the electricity outlets. I have a single designated internet IP address.
To open my computer to the internet I set the "Default Host Option" in the Airport Administrator Utility and selected the default three digits for the "Default Host option" IP address. Then I updated the Airport Express station, manually set the IP address in the Network preferences on my Mac to the "Default Host option" IP address and activated Personal Web Sharing in the Sharing preferences. By doing so I lost my internet connection. It turned out I still had the same IP address that I had before I selected Default Host Option.
As I understand with the Default Host Option I designate one IP address within the ethernet to receive all traffic from outside. But how do you now tell the Airport Express station which computer on the ethernet will be the host for the incoming traffic carrying the Default Host Option IP address? Apparently just setting the IP address manually in the clients computer Network preferences to the "Default Host Option" IP address doesn't tell the Airport Express station to change the IP address it has assigned to this client to the Default Host Option IP address.
In another attempt to make my website accessible on the internet I removed the Default Host Option and instead opened Public Port 80 and Private Port 80 for the IP address of the client computer in the Port Mapping tap of the Airport Administrator Utility. But again, no access to my website from the internet.
To access the website from within the ethernet I use the following web-link, which works fine:
    http://192.xxx.x.x/~user/index.html
The internet of course doesn't see the 193 IP address. It only sees the Public IP address. Therefore I used the Public address instead of the Private IP address to connect to my website from the internet:
    http://222.xxx.xxx.xxx/~user/index.html
But as I said, I still can't access the website from the internet.
I have the feeling that I conceptually don't understand something correctly. I would appreciate if somebody could help me with this problem.

If you would rather not mess with the registry you can often work round with a shift key start.
Hold down the shift key and start iTunes, keep holding down the shift key until you are asked to choose or create a library. If you already have one, navigate to your iTunes folder and choose iTunes Library.itl. Otherwise create a new library in My music.

  • How can I connect to a NAS via internet

I've been searching the forum for an answer and have found close but not quite. I'm running a Macbook on Snow leopard as is a friend that I am now working with. She (or rather, her husband) also has a NAS connected via a wireless router on a home network. We would like to load the files that we are both working from on the NAS so we are working from one set of master files. We both move around alot (btween Fance & Italy). Now, I can access the NAS easily from her computer on their network - the Mac picked it up automatically but now that I'm home, I can't seem to find it on my computer. I've tried putting the IP address of the NAS into Safari - error message, server not responding. I've also tried to connect to server via afp - same thing
My question is: how can we access the NAS via the internet? Does her husband have to specifically creat an account on the thing for me? I'm at a loss here as I have no experience of NAS devices.
    Thanks in advance

The problem here is that you do not have direct access to items on their LAN. What you need to do is set up port forwarding on their router so that requests on whatever port the NAS uses are forwarded to the NAS from the router. The other way (probably more secure) to do it would be to set up virtual private networking (VPN) so that you can connect to their entire LAN as if you were part of it while actually on the Internet. The router would have to support this of course.
    Best of luck.
