Are you trying to update your router wirelessly?  If so, it sounds like you are connecting wirelessly to your neighbor's router.  You should not try to update your router wirelessly.  Always use a wired connection to the router when you update the router.
To update your router, connect your computer, by ethernet cable, to one of the four LAN ports on the router.  Turn off the wireless adapter in your computer.  Login to your router at 192.168.1.1  .   Your "User Name" should be left blank.  Your "Password" is "admin"  (with no quotes), unless you changed it.
Here are my other tips for securing your wireless network:
To set up wireless security, you must use a computer that is wired to the router.
Where to find the router settings: The router's login password is usually on one of the "Administration" pages. The other settings are all found in the "Wireless"  or "Security" sections of the router's setup pages, located at 192.168.1.1
First, give your router a unique SSID. Don't use "linksys".
Make sure "SSID Broadcast" is set to "enabled".
Next, leave the router at its default settings (except for the unique SSID), and then use your pc to connect wirelessly to the router. Test your wireless Internet connection and make sure it is working correctly. You must have a properly working wireless connection before setting up wireless security.
To implement wireless security, you need to do one step at a time, then verify that you can still connect your wireless computer to the router.
Next, encrypt your wireless system using the highest level of encryption that all of your wireless devices will support. Common encryption methods are:
WEP - poor (see note below)
WPA (sometimes called PSK, or WPA with TKIP) - good
WPA2 (sometimes called PSK2, or WPA with AES) - best
WPA and WPA2 sometimes come in versions of "personal" and "enterprise". Most home users should use "personal". Also, if you have a choice between AES and TKIP, and your wireless equipment is capable of both, choose AES. With any encryption method, you will need to supply a key (sometimes called a "password" ).
The wireless devices (computers, printers, etc.) that you have will need to be set up with the SSID, encryption method, and key that matches what you entered in the router.
Retest your system and verify that your wireless Internet connection is still working correctly.
And don't forget to give your router a new login password.
Picking Passwords (keys): You should never use a dictionary word as a password. If you use a dictionary word as a password, even WPA2 can be cracked in a few minutes. When you pick your login password and encryption key (or password or passphrase) you should use a random combination of capital letters, small letters, and numbers, but no spaces. A login password, should be 12 characters or more. WPA and WPA2 passwords should be at least 24 characters. Note: Your key, password, or passphrase must not have any spaces in it.
Most home users should have their routers set so that "remote management" of the router is disabled. If you must have this option enabled, then your login password must be increased to a minumum of 24 random characters.
One additional issue is that Windows XP requires a patch to run WPA2.  The patch is located in SP3.
Note:
WEP is no longer recommended. The FBI has demonstrated that WEP can be cracked in just a few minutes using software tools that are readily available over the Internet. Even a long random character password will not protect you with WEP. You should be using WPA or preferably WPA2 encryption.

  • Can't get Airport Express back onto my wireless network???

Just returned from a trip where I had successfully used my AE in temp accommodation. Now I can't get the thing to rejoin my home network. I've reset it time after time, I go through Airport Setup Asst and get to the bit where it says it's updating the AE, congratulates me on setting it up - but the thing never rejoins and all I get is the amber blinking light. Once this happens it disappears off the network until I again, reset to factory settings.
I have tried entering WEP equiv passwords as well as the ASCII but am not sure which one to use now - totally confused. I have another AE on the network which is working fine. I must be missing something unless the thing has gone u.s?
Any ideas would be gratefully received.

    Hi Dan
I have posted a new topic on this because I feel strongly about it.
Here's a copy and paste of what I said:
"I have spent literally the equivalent of 3 full days, configuring, reconfiguring, re-installing, setting up, un-setting up, scouring the internet, phoning people, taking trips to the Apple Store to find a solution. All a total waste of time. Why? Because until there is an update to cure the problem, the Airport Extreme BS will not function properly when used in an environment other than a basic setup.
My network at home consists of 3 XP PC's, two Airport Expresses, and 5 Macs of various models. Until I removed an Express to use it on a trip, all of it worked well. When I came to return said Express into 'the fold' - that's when the trouble started. Mainly that, unless I had security switched to NONE, I couldn't connect the Expresses to the Base station, and my HP PSC2510 wireless printer would not connect either.
If you are anything like me, you will have been through every single combination of setups, restarts, reinstalls you name it. I got conflicting info about the level of security from the Admin utility - sometimes it would report WPA, others it would say WEP.
Cut a long story short, I finally returned the BASE Staion to the Apple Store and got a replacement. I had narrowed it down to that component only. Everything else on the network "seemed" to be fine.
I wondered whether it was a solitary, faulty AEBS, and by replacing that, it would eliminate the problem. In theory.
Brought home new AEBS but this unit also suffered collossally unreliable/unsuccessful connections from Printer, Expresses and one XP laptop.
I have been to the Moon and back with Hewlett Packard trying to work out what could have happened - overnight - to this normally fail-safe wireless printer. No clues, all seemed to be set up correctly. But it WOULD NOT JOIN THE NETWORK!!!.
So, as any mad (as in angry) scientist would do, I set up a "Control" experiment. Keeping everything as it was, all I changed was the AEBS. I swopped the AEBS for my older white AEBS (flying saucer). Guess what?
Within seconds, all connected. Including printer, Expresses, and XP PCs.
All working perfectly. Wrote down all the settings to check exactly the same as on the new (n) AEBS - identical. Swopped back - same problems. No way would it work.
I am no Network expert but have a feeling that it has a problem managing/distributing/assigning IP addresses. Dunno, just a hunch because the printer would connect fine when connected to AEBS by ethernet cable.
So I am now going to return the new AEBS to Apple and get a refund. I don't have time for this and I suggest not many people do.
So if you have a problem like I did, it might be an idea to try another router or eliminate it somehow and check your settings.
    I hope this helps.
    EDIT:
Looking again through a lot of posts on here - I would estimate that they are pretty much linked to the same problem - a few are reporting problems after connecting to different ISP then not being able to get it working again, some saying they can't get a single solitary PB to connect but al the others do. It all rings bells here! I am sure it's an IP problem (but what do I know) I would love someone to see into this. I doubt whether Apple will come up with something before Christmas - let's hope they prove me wrong eh?
Anyone know of a good, reliable wireless router that also allows external HD sharing?
    Cheers!

  • I just changed the channel on my Airport Extreme and now can't get the Airport Express to recognize the network.  What do?

I changed the channel on Airport Extreme to get away from interference.  Now I can't get my airport express to recognize the network.  What do I do?

I would suggest that you perform a "hard" reset on the AirPort Express Base Station (AX), and then, using the AirPort Utility, reconfigure it "join" or "extend" the AirPort Extreme as appropriate for your networking requirements.

  • Can't get past configuration utility to find MAC address

How do I locate my iPod Touch's MAC address prior to completing the configuration utility so that I can add the address to a router's MAC filtering list?  It doesn't appear that I can do anything with the iPod unless I first  go through the config process...but if I don't have the MAC address, I can't connect to my WiFi.

Think about it:  To set up a new iPod you use the USB/Docking cable to connect the device to a computer that is running iTunes so you can use iTunes to set the device up.  During the setup process you are using the computer's network connection to transfer data to and from Apple.
After the device is set up you can retireve the MAC address.
FYI:  My home network is set up with MAC filtering....
OK, fine.  And what are the chances his new iPod is not running iOS5? (HINT:  He didn't add an iOS tag to his post...)  And if I read his post correctly this is a NEW iPod because he has to run through the configuration utility.
I'd say that based on a recent thread about a replacement iPod not running iOS5, I'd say the odds are pretty darned good that the OP's iPod is not running iOS5.  With that being said, he cannot setup his iPod over a wireless connection which negates the necessity to retrieve said MAC address.  He must connect his iPod to a computer.

    What version is it ?
Check the firmware on the router and compare it with the list here.
For instructions to upgrade the firmware, click here.
After upgrading the firmware, you need to reset the router.
Press the reset button on the router for 30 seconds.
The Power light will start flashing.
Turn the Router and the Modem OFF.
Turn the modem ON first, wait for 10 seconds, turn the router ON, wait for 10 seconds, you should be ONLINE !!!
If not you'll need to clone the MAC address on the router.
    Hope that helps.

  • Can't get Extreme to broadcast 802.11ac, various network issues.

I have a current gen Extreme being extended by the previous generation Extreme. I have both set to have separate names for the 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks, since I like to manually connect my closer devices to the 5GHz and get much faster speeds.
However, when I run whatever WiFi analyzer software I can find on my PC, there are a few issues.
The first of which is that the 5GHz network say that it's only a, not ac. The 2.4GHz network says b, g, n.
Or I should say networkS, because for some reason when scanned I get results for three separate networks.
    2.4GHz on Channel 11 (b, g, n)
    2.4GHz on Channel 11 (b, g, n)
    5GHz on Channel 157 (a)
I just set them all to share the same name, just to test it out, and it still shows up as 3 networks and the 5GHz band still isn't 802.11ac, only 802.11a.
The wireless card I'm scanning with is definitely an 802.11ac card, and it's picking up another network nearby which it shows as "n, ac"
Can anyone help me out here? I feel like I've got a big mess on my hands. I would imagine that the extender complicates things a bit, but I live in a really big house and it's absolutely necessary to extend the range.
Obviously the fact that I'm only getting 802.11a on my 5GHz network is also really, really troubling, especially since I'm picking up a nearby connection with both 802.11n and ac, without 802.11a even listed as an option.

I'm in the northeastern US, so it's certainly not illegal.
The channel is set to automatic. I haven't checked it again recently since I grabbed inSSIDer instead of whatever tool I was using, but right now regardless of whether or not I set up my 5GHz to have a separate name, it's only showing one single a/g/n network (which I'm positive is a 2.4GHz network). I temporarily disabled the extender, it's 4:18am so I'm not gonna be able to do much else until I wake up later on.
As for the firmware, I'm running the latest. Airport Utility is also the latest on iOS. I don't use the Windows version, I think it's several years old and doesn't work very well.
The location is not a problem at all. I'm in the same room as the router, roughly 5-6 feet away under normal circumstances. I'm picking up the AC signal from somewhere else that isn't even near the device, so I don't think it's an issue of range.
I wish I could check from my iPhone 6 Plus whether or not I'm connecting to AC. When I run a speedtest, I'm getting close to 200mbps which is a good 50-60mbps faster than I was getting on my iPhone 5 before I upgraded.
I'm going to bed for the night, but I really hope I can get this resolved tomorrow. I imagine I'm going to have to restore the Extreme and the extender to factory settings and start all over again. I just hope that it'll make a difference. No sense in having an AC router if I can't get the speed/range.

In a roaming network, your "main" router is the device that would require port mapping/forwarding to be configured in order to access the IP camera from the Internet. This router is also the one that would be provide the private IP address for the camera which you will want to be a static one.
So as you described your network, the IP cameras should be getting an IP address or you assigned it a static one and this is the address that you would enter in the Private IP address (or equivalent depending on the router used) field when setting up port mapping.
If you are not able to access this camera from the local network, then this should be troubleshot first.

  • HT204014 How can I get spotlight search to work over a network running OS X Server?

I have installed OS X Server on an iMac to share its files over a network.
I can access the files fine, but if I try and search the shared folders from another Mac on the network it yields no results.
How can I get search to work as well as it does on the files on local disks.

Spotlight searching of shared volumes works for me using OS X 10.10.3 Server and OS X 10.10.3 client, as follows:
If I use Spotlight to search for some content "Aaron Aardvark" the file that contains this text does not seem to show up in the immediate results, but if I select "Show All in Finder" and switch from "This Mac" to "Shared" the file "untitled text.txt" that contains it is listed.
In the past Spotlight was responsible for bringing servers to their knees, so I suspect that the above two-step process is a way of limiting server searches to cases where it is actually required.
Server 4.1 (OS X 10.10.3) seems to add the extended attributes needed to allow Spotlight to index sharepoints:
         test_server3:~ admin$ ls -el /Volumes/Server\ 3\ Users/
         total 0
         drwxr-xr-x+ 4 admin  staff  136 30 Apr 17:02 Server 3 Users
          0: user:_spotlight inherited allow list,search,file_inherit,directory_inherit
         test_server3:~ admin$
but in the past, e.g. Snow Leopard server, you could choose whether or not these attributes were set or not. IIRC  Snow Leopard clients would always include server volumes in Spotlight searches, causing significant slow-downs on the client, so a lot of sysadmins, myself included, chose not to enable it.

  • Can't get FireWire External Drives to Show on Network

Ok I'm stumped and I'm feeling really foolish. I'm sure I'm missing something basic here, but I can't get it. Maybe one of you can see the issue.
    So. The setup:
    The computer "out back:"
    G5 w/10.3.9
Exabyte 1U Packet Loader via Firewire 800.
In the Firewire chain after the packet loader: two LaCie d2 Firewire hard drives, both connected via FW 800.
    The "other" computers:
An array of G4s with either 10.3.9 or 10.4.9. All connected via ethernet.
Here's the issue: when I had the two firewire drives connected to another (G3 Blue and White on 10.3.9) machine, I could go to "network" connect via the admin name/password, and the two external firewire drives would be options for me to connect to. Now, I can connect fine to the "out back" computer, connect with admin username and password, and see the computer in all it's glory just fine. BUT no drives. Not even an option. No access at all.
I can see the two drives on the desktop of the "outback" computer just fine. Retrospect sees them just fine, because I use that to backup one drive to the other. But no network access.
    What I've done:
Checked ownership on the two drives. Set to "read and write" for everyone.
Repaired permissions, redid the combo update. repaired permissions again.
Turned sharing off and back on again.
Thoughts? Questions? What am I missin' here? What else do you need to know?
    Thanks!

SOLUTION: I had "Windows Sharing" turned ON in the Sharing Prefences Panel. Once I turned that off, and just had "Personal File Sharing" turned on, it worked just fine.

  • I changed the password on my WiFi network and can't get my Airport Express to join the network

AT$tT recently replaced my DSL modem with a modem/router. I was able to reset my Airport Express gen1 to join the network. Then I changed my network password  and cannot get it to reconfigure to join the network with a new password. Suggestions?

Next time you want to change the network password.......change it on the Express first....and then on your main router. Then, as soon as you restart the main router, the Express already has the settings that it needs to join the network and it will join with no problems.
Now, you must reset the Express back to factory default settings and then set it up again. To do that......
Power off the Express for a minute
Hold in the reset button first, and keep holding it in for an additional 10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the Express back in to power
Release the reset button after the 10 second hold, and allow a full minute for the Express to restart to a slow, blinking amber light status
The Express has now been reset and you can reconfigure it to join your "new" network now.
