WRT54G - Cannot get DHCP to resolve

Hello, I have a WRT54G v 5.0 that I had got 2 years ago. It has worked wonderfully in what it had to do, but now it's cutting out on me for no apparent reason. I have a relatively simple setup Optimum Online -> WRT54G -> 2 computers [wired] and a wireless access point [for a laptop] so traffic really isn't an issue. In the 'Status' section of my router's webpage, I try to DHCP release/renew to no avail, I get returned a 0.0.0.0 address. However, when I directly plug my computer into the cable modem, I am given a signal and I can post this thread. I have upgraded the firmware, reset the router manually, unplugged it for about 15 minutes (think it clears the cache?) then replugged it in and also have reset to factory defaults to no avail. So, to sum things up, I do get an internet signal, but for some reason the router doesn't want to distribute the signal. I fear that it's being a hog and using the internet for its own benefits (sarcasm! )

No. You are the hog. Your computer which works directly on the cable modem hogs the connection. Try the other computer directly on the modem and most likely it won't work either.
You cable ISP locks the connection to the MAC address of the computer.
Depending on the ISP and the cable modem there are different ways to clear it:
* call the ISP while not connected or ask them how to do it.
* reset the modem.
* unplug the modem from power. (of course restarting it with the router connected)
* turn off the modem for the night.
If nothing works, you can also try the MAC address clone function in the router. Wire the modem to the internet port of the router. Wire the computer which is able to connect to the internet through the modem to a numbered LAN port. Now open http://192.168.1.1/ The MAC address clone should be a subtab on the main Setup tab. Clone the MAC address of the computer. It should be easy simply by pressing the button to clone "this" computers mac address. Don't forget to click on save settings afterwards. Then check the status page. The status page now should show you the MAC address of the computer. It should also connect now.

  • WRT54G cannot save DHCP settings

    Hi,
My WRT54G will not save changes to the number of DHCP users. I have a static IP address from my ISP and have all of the info entered correctly and can connect wirelessly to the internet from my laptop but not from my wired desktop. I'm guessing it has something to do with the DHCP settings.
On the router setup page it has the starting IP address as 192.168.1.1 (which is the IP address of the router and shouldn't be the pool's starting address) and the max number of users as 2. If I change the starting IP address to 192.168.1.2 it automatically sets the max number of users to 1. If I try to enter in any other values than those above for the starting IP address, it does not save the changes even though I get that page that says 'settings have been changed successfully' and the 'continue' button.
I am running Vista on the laptop, XP Home on the desktop and have an SDSL modem from my ISP. I just switched from a Belkin router to the Linksys & both pc's could connect before with the Belkin except it kept dropping the wireless connection on the laptop -- hence the reason for the switch to the Linksys.
I hope this makes sense to someone out there who can offer some assistance. I certainly do appreciate any help offered.

You need to reset the router to factory defaults, then setup your router again from scratch.   If you saved a router configuration file, DO NOT use it.
To reset your router to factory defaults, use the following procedure:
    1) Power down all computers, the router, and the modem, and unplug them from the wall.
    2) Disconnect all wires from the router.
    3) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    4) Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds, then release it, then let the router reset and reboot (2-3 minutes).
    5) Power down the router.
    6) Connect one computer by wire to port 1 on the router (NOT to the internet port).
    7) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    8) Power up the computer (if the computer has a wireless card, make sure it is off).
    9) Try to ping the router. To do this, click the "Start" button > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt. A black DOS box will appear. Enter the following: "ping 192.168.1.1" (no quotes), and hit the Enter key. You will see 3 or 4 lines that start either with "Reply from ... " or "Request timed out." If you see "Reply from ...", your computer has found your router.
    10) Open your browser and point it to 192.168.1.1. This will take you to your router's login page. Leave the user name blank, and in the password field, enter "admin" (with no quotes). This will take you to your router setup page. Note the version number of your firmware (usually listed near upper right corner of screen). Exit your browser.
If you get this far without problems, try the setup disk (or setup the router manually, if you prefer), and see if you can get your router setup and working.
If you cannot get "Reply from ..." in step 9 above, your router is dead.
If you get a reply in step 9, but cannot complete step 10, then either your router is dead or the firmware is corrupt. In this case, use the Linksys tftp.exe program to try to reload your router with the latest firmware. After reloading the firmware, repeat the above procedure starting with step 1.
If you need additional help, please state your ISP, the make and model of your modem, your router's firmware version, and the results of steps 9 and 10. Also, if you get any error messages, copy them exactly and report back.
Please let me know how things turn out for you.

  • Clients connected to AP541N cannot get DHCP address

New install with 3 AP541N's in a cluster. Two AP's are connected by an ESW-520-8P PoE switch and one on its own power adapter and a 3COM switch.  I have set up a single SSID with WPA-AES encryption. I am connecting with HP 2740P tablets with Intel wireless cards. Clients can see and connect to the AP's but only some can get IP addesses from our Small Business Server 2003 DHCP server.
It's intermittent, some will get an IP and work for a while, while other can't. Then the ones that are working will drop and then none of the devices can get an IP. Then suddenly a few will start to work again. I have solid connectivity everywhere in the building but can't get an IP. Also, strangely, even when assigning a static IP I can not pass traffic, although it says I am connected with "5 bars" of signal strength.
Clients show up under Cluster>Sessions, but sometimes with really high counts of "Signal" and "Error Rate". However, even the clients with a "good" connection cannot get an IP.
Here is what I have tried:
Upgrade firmware on all 3 AP's to 1.9.1 (latest)
Wiped and reloaded the devices several times
Tried no encryption, WEP, WPA, doesn't make a difference
Tried everything described in this thread: https://supportforums.cisco.com/message/3078962#3078962 including the registry entry on the DHCP server
I have a spare AP that I put into production with the same load, but it didn't seem to make a difference.
    Broadcast/Multicast limiting set to off
Upgraded to latest drivers on tablets; Boosted power on adapter to highest strength; Turned off power saving
I have exhausted all efforts in searching and trying based on my own experience, so any help the community can provide would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Derek

  • 1242AG Wireless Access Point - Cannot Get DHCP IP for BVI1 interface - Multiple SSIDs...

    Hello,
I am attempting to set up three Cisco 1242AG Wireless Access Points with multiple SSID's. I used the web interface and directions online to set up the two networks I want and at least one of the networks work wirelessly.
    However, I have two problems:
The first, which is the most important, is that the "management" interface, BVI1, doesn't get an ip address from our DHCP server. I set the VLAN 60 (which you'll see in the documenation below) to be the native VLAN on the device as well as on the switch that the device is connected to as well as other settings in the configeration file below. Because of this, I can only manage the device via the console port which would be a huge pain once all of the devices are mounted.
The second problem is that I am not sure how to get both wireless networks broadcasting their SSID's. I have to manually type in the SSID for the second wireless network I have which I would prefer I don't have to. Anyway I can enable broadcasting on all of the SSID's?
    Thank you for your time.
    Regards,
    Christopher Koeber

I am using a third party DHCP server which is our Windows Domain Controller. I have the ip helper-address set for the native vlan of the Access Point through a layer 3 distribution switch (a Catalyst 4506) that the current switch connects to.
I didn't see any event on the logs for the AP.
Let me know if I need to do something else.
    Thanks.

  • Hyper-V in Windows 8.. VM cannot get DHCP IP address

I had Both Virtual Box and Hyper-V on the same machine, I decided trying to shut down Hyper-V all the time was too much trouble so I removed VirtualBox.
Since then no machine can get a local IP address from the router.
I have even setup the virtual connections again:
I have various CentOS installs which I installed with generation 1.
I even tried changing the LAN Adapter to a "Legacy" one, but it still fails.
Any advice as to what is going on with this?
    Thanks

    Hi trentcreek,
    >>I switched to STATIC IP using the Google DNS of 8.8.8.8.
    >>I can see the virtual Ethernet, which I am having the guest OS use, status as connected, and has internet access.
    >>It still refuses to connect
After configured static IP for that VM then it can access virutal Ethernet and internet .
I want to know what's the meaning of "It still refuses to connect" .
First please ensure that VM connected to correct "external virtual switch".
Also I noticed that you have enabled "Allow management operating system to share .." and the external virtual switch is bounding to Wireless NIC .
I suggest you to create an external virtual bounding to wire NIC then test again .
Here is an article regarding the common issue of bounding external switch to WIFI :

Anyone have an issue like this before?

    thanks Robert,
The customer has both voice and data scopes defined on a single dhcp server (C2811 Router). I've managed to get the static ip configured on the ON100 agent. This was accomplished by moving the ON100 lan connection to an uplink port on the switch. Odly enough, I was able to see the ip address assignment in the dhcp pool, but the configuration on the ON100 still had the static configuration from the previous network it was moved from. I used the new dhcp assignment to log into the device and make the change. I am now having the following two problems:
1.) After moving the ON100 back to a switchport (so the pc and monitor would be in the same network surface), the ON100 is still pulling a second ip address from the voice scope, (even though the static ip is still assigned to the mac address). When I clear the entry in in dhcp cache, it reappears, leaving me with a voice and date ip for the same mac.
2.) When attempting to activate the ON100, I get the following error, could this be related to moving the unit from the lab to the customer site?

The iPad's Mail app has no provisions for creating groups. However, you canuse a third party app that many users recommend.

Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
Or this - Delete the account in Mail and then set it up again. Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Accounts   Tap on the Account, then on the red button that says Remove Account.

I guess he/she open Notes in Gmail settings. This archives (one way sync) notes in gmail account under notes label that is invisible if you are using the standard gmail setup on your iPhone. You can see it on desktop browser, Safari or gmail app in iDevice. Am I wrong?
    Sorry for bad English.

  • HELP: MacBook cannot get IP from DHCP wired/wireless

    Hi, everyone.
I recently bought a TP-LINK TL-WR340G route and added it into my home network.
My iBook and PCs are albe to connect to network and internet, but my MacBook even cannot get a IP from the DHCP. I tried both wired & wireless connection.
I've tried to give my MacBook a static IP address, after that it can ping to the gateway and other devices on the network, and the DNS is working fine. But the MacBook just cannot connect to internet.
My MacBook can connect to internet at my office and my relative's house.
Please help to fix the problem. Thanks a lot.

    What is the device type?
I have seen this with 4 android 5 devices.  I think its something to due with misconfig on android and mfp settings.  Although I'm not sure why I have hundreds of other android 5 devices working ok.  I see this same when I debug one of the devices that is stuck in DHCP_REQ

  • Wrt54g - no wired connection - cannot find ethernet port upon setup, cannot get wired connection

I've had my wrt54g router for a little over 1 year.  I had to get support to set up the router initially b/c it could not find the ethernet port when I tried to set it up initially.  I am past that date and recently had to move the router and the PC.  When I tried to redo the setup same issue - i upgraded the firmware and same issue.  If i uplug the router and plug the cable directly from the cable modem into my pc, everything works well, but when i try to set up a wireless connection, the wired connection goes down, but the wireless connection works and i cannot get the wired connection back up.  i am a novice with the device, so any detailed help in trouble shooting the problem and getting me back up on both a wired and wireless basis would be appreciated.

As you upgraded the router's firmware,I would suggest you to reset the router for 30 seconds and configure the router from the scratch.Make sure that the Modem is connected to the router on the internet port and the computer to the router on the ethernet port.
Also check the ip address you are getting on the computer hardwired to the router...Click Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >> Command Prompt...A black box will appear(Command Prompt)...In the Command Prompt window type ipconfig and press 'Enter'...Look for Ethernet Adapter Local Area Connection IP Address , Subnet Mask and Default Gateway...
IP Address should be 192.168.1.x, Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.0, Default Gateway : 192.168.1.1 (assuming your router is 192.168.1.1)...If you get the above mentioned IP Address, Subnet and Gateway Address then you should ping the Gateway, type ping 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...If it gives you request timed out then disable any firewalls, security softwares on the computer...
If you get 4 replies then, try to open the setup page..
